A commercial ship sank in the Black Sea after what Ukrainian officials described as a coordinated Russian attack involving aerial and maritime drones inside Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone.

The cargo ship Alfa Watan suffered severe damage and went under, while a second vessel, ABLE, was hit and caught fire. All 18 crew members aboard ABLE were rescued, though two suffered serious injuries.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, “Our intelligence and special services are now working to establish all available information about yet another attack in the Black Sea targeting civilian vessels.”

He added that Ukrainian authorities had determined it was “a combined Russian attack using maritime and aerial drones.”

Later, Zelenskyy issued a separate warning about a possible major attack, saying, “We’ve got updated intel on Russia’s preparations for a massive strike.” He urged people to take missile warnings seriously and said Ukrainian forces were prepared to respond.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev called the incident “absolutely unacceptable” and described an attack inside Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone as a serious violation of international law.

Radev also warned, “If this war is not ended in time, it will continue to expand its spatial scope and increase the risk of even a global conflict.”

The incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of commercial shipping and the widening risks surrounding the Black Sea.
