00:00As an architect, you had to be pumped to see just the way these kids kind of leaned into how
00:06Marion could play.
00:08Yeah, that was awesome.
00:09I actually think I saw that shot.
00:10It was sick.
00:12And I saw a couple other guys hit similar type shots because that was the day the pin was back
00:18right, wasn't it?
00:19It was definitely on the right side.
00:21It wasn't on the left because he was – I don't know how far back right it was, but it
00:25was definitely on the middle to the right side.
00:28Yep, yep.
00:29No, so that was the same day I was there, yeah, and I think I did see that shot.
00:32But really what was more important or more interesting to me, again, because I have that demented creativity sense of
00:39humor, is that watching the folks not think enough about where to hit the ball, right?
00:46And they would end up behind the pin or left.
00:50They just couldn't figure out what they needed to do as far as that.
00:54So it was kind of interesting.
00:55And so as we go back to Cobbs Creek and a couple holes that definitely stood out to me, Charlie
01:02talked about the fourth hole, the bottom of that hill.
01:05I think it was maybe the first aerial that we looked at in this entire sheet, Charlie.
01:09It's this one.
01:10These bunkers.
01:11When you guys saw the original aerials of this piece of the property and what this golf hole could be,
01:18can you describe, first off, how this hole is set to be played, how long it plays, but just the
01:24beauty in this hillside with all these green side and maybe even fairway bunkers that protect the front of this
01:31green?
01:32Yeah, so actually, those bunkers were not there in any version of any aerial that we looked at.
01:37So this is a Jim Wagner Gilhant special here.
01:42Yes, for the most part, yes.
01:44I love it.
01:44So what we needed to do is, and it kind of goes all along that whole entire ridge that you're
01:50looking at, right?
01:50That's kind of the top flat part of the ridge.
01:53And then it falls down where those bunkers stagger the way down the hillside.
01:56But then that goes across the entire property.
01:58And, you know, playing it when I was younger, the carry from what would be the 8th tee, which you
02:03see adjacent to those bunkers, right, over to 8th fairway was, it was pretty dramatic.
02:08And it was a long carry, and it was running it from left to right.
02:12So you slice the ball a little bit.
02:13Now you're down the hillside in front of 8th or 11th tee.
02:17It was kind of a mess.
02:19So what we end up having to do is depress both the beginning of 8th fairway and the beginning of
02:2411th fairway into the ground.
02:25And then as part of that, we were saying to ourselves, well, what do we need to do going across
02:30this ridge to make it interesting?
02:32What would have happened at Cobbs Creek if things, you know, transpired differently and Hugh Wilson and or his team,
02:40you know, William Flynn, Joe Valentine, et cetera, came in?
02:43What would they have done to Cobbs Creek, you know, on those holes?
02:49And thinking about it, what's the tie in between this hole, which is number 7 at Cobbs Creek and Marion?
02:55What's similar about any hole at Marion?
02:58And our take on it was you're 16 at Marion, right, which is the quarry hole.
03:03So, yeah, so the quarry bunkering, yeah.
03:06Now 16 is obviously different because you carry the quarry on your second shot.
03:10But here we use this particular area as what would be the quarry of Cobbs Creek, right?
03:16And then the difference is, as you kind of see up above to the right, and Ben Hillard, who works
03:20with, you know, Gill and I at Hans Golf Design, was part of setting everything up here.
03:25And you can see the approach.
03:26So it's this whole mix between, you know, a tour event, the better players, the everyday better player, and the
03:33average golfer who's going to come to Cobbs Creek.
03:35How do we make it challenging and fun and interesting for all different levels?
03:41And our goal here was, with that bunkering, was just that, is that the whole play is probably from the
03:47back to a tour, to you, we'll put on the other side.
