00:25Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim told the Dewan Rakyat
00:28that Malaysia would raise repatriation during the visit
00:31but would insist on guarantees against abuse, pressure or human rights violations.
00:37Anwar added that 10,000 Myanmar detainees had been repatriated since January
00:42by air and sea, including Rohingya as well as Arakan, Khurin and Shaan.
00:48The visit follows an agreement for Myanmar to take back 5,000 of its nationals in stages,
00:53after Anwar invited Min Ang Laing to expedite negotiations.
00:58The first phase saw 1,476 Myanmar nationals sent home on September 29th,
01:05leaving another 3,524 awaiting repatriation.
01:09Malaysia is awaiting confirmation from Myanmar on the second phase,
01:13with Anwar stressing that repatriation can only proceed if Myanmar agrees and signs an agreement.
01:19The Prime Minister also agreed that refugee documentation should be handled by Malaysian authorities
01:25rather than foreign officials.
01:27Malaysia is developing its own refugee registration system and biometric database
01:32to manage refugees and asylum seekers independently from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
