00:00:01After taking pole in four of the first five races, Michael Schumacher can claim only one
00:00:07in the past six, and none in the last four. Yet it hasn't seemed to matter. Regardless of where
00:00:14the world champion has started, he has had the field covered. Schumacher going by in the lead
00:00:20with another fast lap, a tenth quicker than his previous one. How the heck did they do that?
00:00:25But that field is getting closer, and the gap is closing. After a disappointing start
00:00:32to the season, McLaren seems to have turned things around. Come on, get after him, this
00:00:37is what we want. And you know that Mercedes-Benz would love nothing more than to sit on pole
00:00:42in its home race. A feat accomplished by rival BMW in Hockenheim a year ago, and one they
00:00:47are looking to duplicate. Who's will be the happy homecoming today? Qualifying for the
00:00:53German Grand Prix is just moments away.
00:01:20Near the banks of the mighty Rhine River, in the heartland of the German industrial south,
00:01:24not far from the French border, the Hockenheim Ring is the site of round 12 of the 2004
00:01:29Formula One season. But before you can race the German Grand Prix, you must qualify.
00:01:36Hello everyone, I'm Bob Varsha, along with David Hobbs and Steve Matchett. Welcome to the final
00:01:41round of qualifying for Sunday morning's German Grand Prix, which you'll see here live on Speed
00:01:47Channel. The Hockenheim Ring, once one of the most distinctive tracks in Grand Prix racing,
00:01:51now another victim of the trend toward safer but more sterile racing facilities. And as you see,
00:01:58a good crowd on hand to watch native son Michael Schumacher go to work. We've already had one round
00:02:04of single car, single lap qualifying. Let's check the highlights. As the winner two weeks ago in Britain
00:02:09for the 10th time in 11 races this year, Michael Schumacher was first on track with a good but not
00:02:15great lap. He wound up 11th at the end of the day, beaten by, among others, Kimi Raikkonen in the
00:02:20new
00:02:20McLaren. Provisionally first at that point, he wound up eight. Rubens Barrichello, the Ferrari
00:02:26teammate, took to the track. He would end up down there with Michael Schumacher in 11th, 12th spot.
00:02:34Then Jenson Button went out in the BAR Honda, which they had to revise dramatically after practice the
00:02:38other day. Changed the front end diff. Got a good time there. Going to end up in third spot.
00:02:43And then Montoya went out. It's not had a lackluster weekend, but not a great weekend.
00:02:46It was fastest at that time and would remain fastest to rest the day.
00:02:50And Fernando Alonso out in the Renault. The R24 chassis. P4 had finished that first qualifying
00:02:55session with a time of 13.582. After that, Olivier Panis in the TF104B, the revamped Toyota chassis.
00:03:03Good enough for P6. And to prove that his teammate's lap was not a fluke, new boy Antonio Pisonia into
00:03:12the
00:03:13second BMW Williams for the injured. Ralph Schumacher turned in a lap just 31,000th of a second off of
00:03:19his
00:03:20teammate's provisional pole. Good for second in the session. So a great run for the young Brazilian known as
00:03:27Jungle Boy, having grown up in the Amazon River Basin. Here's a look at the order. They will go out
00:03:32slowest to fastest in the only session that matters. One hot lap to determine your place
00:03:39on the grid. And how important is qualifying? Well, track position is always important in motorsports
00:03:44these days, but particularly so for the Grand Prix here at Hockenheim, where 12 of the last 16
00:03:50runnings of the German Grand Prix have been won from pole position.
00:03:56You see Pisonia and Montoya will be the last two on track. Good day for Michelin tires thus far.
00:04:03It has been warm and fairly muggy. Yesterday we saw the ambient temperatures climb from the low 80s to
00:04:10the low 90s during the course of Friday morning practice. I expect it will be equally warm here
00:04:17this afternoon. Well, as you can see, it's pretty muggy. That air looks very, very thick over the
00:04:21forest there. In fact, it looks like it might be raining in the distance. But that, of course,
00:04:25is the forest where the old track used to wind through over four miles long. Big crowd on hand.
00:04:31They're complaining they're not going to fill the new Grandstand, which holds 120,000 people.
00:04:35I wouldn't complain about that either. Now they're hoping to get to about last year's number of 100,000
00:04:41people or so. You saw the weather conditions. The ambient just about 80 degrees right now as we get
00:04:49set to go. While we have a moment, let's take a look at the Porsche track map, David.
00:04:53Well, the track was completely rebuilt in 2002 down at 2.8 miles. It's nearly a mile and a half
00:04:58short
00:04:59than it used to be. Still no elevation change. A little bit bumpy to the Nord curve, which is turn
00:05:03one.
00:05:04A very fast right-hander leading down to the Parabolica. You could do a bit of overtaking
00:05:08to two, all the way from two down to six. That long, long left-hander there. Six is a good
00:05:14opportunity for outbraking there, but very easy to outbrake yourself as well. Then really from six
00:05:19onward, there's not much opportunity for overtaking. A good driver's track. Good fun to drive, I imagine.
00:05:24And as you can see, it's pretty high speed, about 139 miles an hour today so far. But really not
00:05:30a lot
00:05:30of overtaking opportunities, which is why we've had so many of those races won here from the front
00:05:35row. So Baumgartner buckles into his minority to get ready to go. You may be wondering what
00:05:43happened to the old Hockenheim ring. Well, here it is. A long blast out into the forest where some
00:05:50of the darkest moments in the history of this track took place, including the death of the
00:05:54great Jim Clark in 1968 in a Formula Two race. Now, it's all grass.
00:06:04Speed Channel's coverage of the FIA Formula One World Championship is brought to you by BMW.
00:06:09BMW, the ultimate driving machine.
00:06:16Welcome back to qualifying for the German Formula One Grand Prix at Hockenheim. Here on Speed Channel,
00:06:21I'm Bob Varsha with Steve Matchett and David Hobbs. The first car on track for his one hot lap will
00:06:27be
00:06:27Hungarian Zoltbaum Gardner in the Minardi Cosworth.
00:06:33Big storm last night, Bob, thinking about the grip on the track. Late last night, after the practice
00:06:38sessions had finished, of course, about midnight, a colossal storm broke over the Hockenheim
00:06:42ring last night and washed a lot of that rubber down. We started to see the grip level pick up
00:06:48again,
00:06:49but that will affect the performance of the tyres. What the teams are most concerned about
00:06:53around here is rear tyre degradation. That's the thing they've got to concern themselves about,
00:06:57and the blistering on the tyre. Not the front, not graining across the tyre where you start to see
00:07:01little bits of rubber rolling across. It's the blistering on the rear, which will force a lot of
00:07:06the teams, I believe, to use the harder compound. But when the rain has washed all that rubber away,
00:07:10they could really do with running the soft compound to get the most performance out of the car.
00:07:15They won't be able to do that now. They will have set, the compounds had to be set at nine
00:07:19o'clock
00:07:19this morning to the FIA regular. And that sort of corner there shows why your degradation on the
00:07:23rear is so severe because you're using, you're on the power all the way through there.
00:07:27And then this last double apex corner leading on to the start finish straight's the same.
00:07:32Jimmy Bruni awaiting his turn. Massive new grandstand, or a cap to the existing grandstand at the back of
00:07:40your screen there, where the architectural stylings of Herman Tilke stamped all over it.
00:07:48Baumgartner is on the clock. He turned a one-minute 17.515 second lap in his first attempt.
00:07:55A cool four seconds off of provisional pole.
00:08:05Nice, wide racetrack. You can tell from those overhead shots, they have rebuilt this track
00:08:10into quite a complex. It includes a drag strip, a karting track, campgrounds, and a lot more.
00:08:18Some of those overhead shots, you'll see just how close we are to the main road and town.
00:08:23Look at that very tight apex there. Turn nine. Looking very skittish.
00:08:34Into the stadium. Massive stands, completely surrounded.
00:08:41Looking a little bit nervous, right there. See how the chassis starting to move around?
00:08:46I think that'll be virtue of this hard compound tire and the fact that, as I was saying,
00:08:51it's just got no rubber on the track at the moment. It's getting better,
00:08:54but they're all going to be struggling with it.
00:08:57Ooh, 18.3.
00:08:59Wow. More than half a second worse than his first attempt just a few minutes ago.
00:09:05Paul Stoddard, his team owner, looking on.
00:09:08And looking older.
00:09:09Because they could have put some more fuel in it for the qualifier.
00:09:12Ooh, right here.
00:09:13Bit sideways there. That'll see the old tires. Up too much of that.
00:09:17They're going into that double apex right-hander there.
00:09:19Again, that big slide in the first part of the corner didn't really help his exit speed much either.
00:09:26Here comes his teammate, Gian Maria Jimmy Bruni.
00:09:30He did a 17.283, about three-tenths quicker than his teammate,
00:09:36in the first set of runs.
00:09:37All that area behind him for runoff area.
00:09:39Last year, we had that start line basically shunt,
00:09:42and took out Kimi Räikkönen and ran the tire barrier.
00:09:44It was just a few feet off the track now.
00:09:47It seems to be about a quarter of a mile runoff of area.
00:09:49So it's giving these lads plenty of room to make a mistake.
00:09:52Turn one looms large in this race every year.
00:09:56This is the turn six.
00:09:57There you see how tight it is,
00:09:59but it does give an opportunity to get inside people on braking.
00:10:01But so easy to outbrake yourself to go sliding off to the outside
00:10:04after you completed the pass.
00:10:07That's a very cool cable cam they have mounted there.
00:10:18It's that run down to 12 and into the stadium.
00:10:21There's that new stand of yours on the left.
00:10:29It's a funny grip on that wheel with his two fingers,
00:10:32two knuckles above the corner of the wheel.
00:10:39That's the steering input going to this guy.
00:10:44To the line he comes, this will be slower as well.
00:10:47An 18.05.5.
00:10:49So both of the minority drivers significantly slower in their second run.
00:10:53That could be down to the fuel on board,
00:10:56because you must start the race with the fuel load you run in qualifying.
00:11:00We'll take a break.
00:11:03Whoa.
00:11:06Welcome back to qualifying for the Formula One German Grand Prix at Hockenheim.
00:11:10Here on Speed Channel, this is Nick Heidfeld in the bright yellow Jordan.
00:11:15Heidfeld, very much a man in the news this weekend.
00:11:18He was to have tested the BMW Williams at Jerez in Spain last week
00:11:23in anticipation of possibly competing for a seat with that team next year
00:11:28when Williams will lose both of its front-line drivers.
00:11:30But Eddie Jordan refused to allow Heidfeld to go over to Williams to test
00:11:36unless Williams would fund his replacement at Jordan.
00:11:41So as a result, Heidfeld remains a Jordan driver this weekend.
00:11:49Well, the Jordans yesterday, if you were with us for Friday practice,
00:11:52had extra aerodynamic features just above the side pod entrances to the radiator air inlets.
00:11:59Those are gone today.
00:12:03You know, we saw one of the Jordan chassis lose it yesterday.
00:12:06Bob, I wouldn't be surprised whether or not Charlie Whiting, the FIA race director,
00:12:10but still effectively the technical delegate as well for the FIA,
00:12:13has had a word with Jordan and told him to remove them on the grounds of safety.
00:12:18Remember, the teams are compelled to put cars on the track which are safe in construction.
00:12:23I think that'll be a loophole for the FIA to say,
00:12:26guys, you need to just go back to a test track and run them a little more
00:12:29and make sure they're going to stop on the car if you want to use them.
00:12:34So Nick Heidfeld moves to provisional pole.
00:12:38Nick Heidfeld at a difficult point in his career because he needs to move to another team,
00:12:44but he's not showing the performance superiority of his teammate,
00:12:47who we're looking at now, Giorgio Pantano, that he needs to show.
00:12:52And, you know, he's having a slightly lackluster year,
00:12:54but of course it's a very lackluster car that he's trying in.
00:12:57So it's one of those awful rock and hard place scenarios.
00:13:01Nigel Mansell drove a Jordan in the famous Formula One demonstration
00:13:05on Regent Street in London a little over two weeks ago.
00:13:08Reportedly, he got out of the car at the end of his brief run and said,
00:13:11well, you can have this thing.
00:13:15There's already a fair chance for him.
00:13:17Well, exactly.
00:13:18Giorgio Pantano was about four tenths quicker than Nick Heidfeld.
00:13:22And that gives you an idea of watching under braking.
00:13:24That gives you an idea of how difficult this car is to drive.
00:13:27It seems to have the most appalling behavior under braking.
00:13:30And turning in from the front end.
00:13:32It seems to come in the front end looking at it from the outside.
00:13:34But I assume that's what they were trying to do
00:13:37with those extra aerodynamic appendages,
00:13:39was try to give the car some semblance of balance.
00:13:42Yeah.
00:13:43I think you're right.
00:13:44It does look very unstable.
00:13:46But again, there it is.
00:13:48Just a little lining up to turn into the turn.
00:13:51I think they're just not spending the money in development.
00:13:53I really think this is it.
00:13:54This is Jordan just to keep going mode until we can sell the team off.
00:13:57You know, they're really running on empty reserves of cash.
00:14:01But this will go a bit wide there.
00:14:03But this sort of thing is not good for Nick Heidfeld, of course,
00:14:06for Pantano to qualify better than him,
00:14:08which it looks like he's going to do unless he loses a lot.
00:14:10Yep.
00:14:1116-1 for Pantano.
00:14:14He did a 16-1-6-6 in the first session.
00:14:17So he's come close to what he did then,
00:14:19which would seem to indicate the Minardi Czar were on heavier fuel.
00:14:24Look at that.
00:14:26You can notice that 4-6-6-6-4 on the engine cover.
00:14:29That's another message from Bahrain.
00:14:32A series of funded messages on the Jordan this year.
00:14:354-6-6-6-4 was Nelson Mandela's prisoner number
00:14:39during his years of incarceration in South Africa.
00:14:47Here is the new Toyota,
00:14:49the much-heralded and very much-anticipated TF-104B.
00:14:54There are only two in existence,
00:14:55so they better not bend one this weekend.
00:14:58This is Cristiano De Mata.
00:15:00Obviously not going off to a good start,
00:15:01being two tenths slower there than Giorgio Pantano
00:15:04in the Jordan,
00:15:07which is not exactly what a team with 1,000 people
00:15:11and probably the biggest budget in the Formula 1 we're looking for.
00:15:14Well, they've just gone through the speed track
00:15:16with that Toyota lump.
00:15:17We know it's got a lot of horsepower,
00:15:18194 miles an hour,
00:15:20but Jordan Ford, by comparison, 202.
00:15:22I wouldn't be surprised whether or not
00:15:24these guys are running fuel for a two-stop strategy on this.
00:15:28This is always the thing, isn't it?
00:15:29With this new qualifying regulation,
00:15:31it's very difficult to get a comparison between the two.
00:15:33The idea that the Jordan is outperforming the Toyota,
00:15:36even if it's in its maiden race,
00:15:38this revamped version with a new monocoque,
00:15:40I just can't see it.
00:15:42I think, by the way...
00:15:43It's misleading, isn't it?
00:15:44But he picked up a lot of time in that second sector,
00:15:46which has got a lot of corners,
00:15:47so maybe he's got a lot of downforce
00:15:49cramping the thing down as well,
00:15:50which is not a good sign.
00:15:51They shouldn't have to use that much downforce
00:15:53where they need mechanical grip.
00:15:54He did a 15-1-1-9 in his first effort,
00:15:58a 15-4 here.
00:15:59So Cristiano De Mata
00:16:01takes over a provisional pole for the moment.
00:16:04This is Mike Gascoigne, their technical director.
00:16:07I saw an interesting comment from him recently
00:16:09that part of the problem they face,
00:16:11because the team is based in Germany,
00:16:12which has very strict labor laws,
00:16:16it's very difficult to fire an employee in Germany.
00:16:20As a result, Toyota has a lot of what you might call
00:16:25extra weight on the old employment tree there.
00:16:29They have a lot of folks on payroll,
00:16:30aren't doing much,
00:16:31so up around 1,000 employees,
00:16:33not a lot of effective work getting done.
00:16:35Just because it's so hard to get rid of them.
00:16:37Of course, they have that ridiculously short work week, too.
00:16:40Yeah.
00:16:41All because that's where Toyota's original
00:16:43European motorsports effort in rallying
00:16:46was set up 20 years ago.
00:16:48Need is no longer there.
00:16:50Maybe a move to Britain would be good.
00:16:52We'll be back in just a moment.
00:16:57Welcome back.
00:16:58There's Rubens Botticello suiting up.
00:17:00In the Ferrari garage,
00:17:01there is Mark Webber in the Jaguar.
00:17:05Scheduled to be the next man on track.
00:17:07There's his teammate,
00:17:08young Austrian Christian Kling.
00:17:13These two very close based on their first qualifying lap times.
00:17:20The clean, slightly the quicker.
00:17:23Speed Channel is your home for, among other things, sports car racing, of course.
00:17:27Coming up tomorrow at 4 p.m. Eastern,
00:17:29we'll have live coverage from the American Le Mans Series race
00:17:31at Portland International Raceway in Oregon.
00:17:36Portland has produced some of the closest and most exciting races in ALMS history.
00:17:40Don't miss it tomorrow at 4 p.m. Eastern,
00:17:42only here on Speed.
00:17:44And another slightly unusual issue tomorrow at Portland
00:17:47is the fact that I see from the Weather Channel
00:17:49that they're having an absolute heat wave this weekend
00:17:52and they're looking at temperatures in the high 90s,
00:17:54which is not what you expected.
00:17:56The West Coast, yeah.
00:17:57First time I've ever raced there,
00:17:59as you turn, you go to the back end of the circuit,
00:18:01turn around, start coming back towards the pits in the main town there.
00:18:05Suddenly saw the mountain there, not Mount Rainier.
00:18:08What's the mountain?
00:18:09Mount Hood.
00:18:09Mount Hood, I mean, this thing just,
00:18:11just a bullet covered in snow.
00:18:14Gorgeous sight.
00:18:15It's an amazing sight.
00:18:17Christian Cleen seemed to be in pretty good spirits.
00:18:19There's Kimi Räikkönen.
00:18:24Absolutely relieved to have finished second in the British Grand Prix
00:18:27and in with a fighting chance against Michael Schumacher.
00:18:30No snickering, please.
00:18:32Had he not come out from a couple of his pit stops into traffic,
00:18:36we will have seen an even closer battle
00:18:39between Räikkönen and Schumacher at Silverstone.
00:18:42On board with Mark Webber and the Jaguars.
00:18:45He comes up to speed.
00:18:46With a Saks curve, tight left-hander.
00:18:50We've got a couple of 180-degree corners on this track.
00:18:52The Saks one almost goes through 180.
00:18:54This little left-hand sweep,
00:18:56down to that double apex right-hander.
00:18:58That's all David Stubbs, the team manager.
00:19:01The Jaguar is part of the Stuart Empire
00:19:04for Stuart F3000 racing for years.
00:19:06And then, of course,
00:19:08when Stuart Grand Prix formed,
00:19:10which is now the incarnation,
00:19:11Jaguar taking over Stuart Grand Prix,
00:19:13he remained on board.
00:19:14I think he's probably the only employee left
00:19:15from Stuart Grand Prix now.
00:19:17Oh, David Stubbs.
00:19:18One of those guys that's been around
00:19:20for a thousand years in the sport.
00:19:25Poor old Jag.
00:19:27They've only scored,
00:19:29looking at the Constructors' Championship,
00:19:30four points all year long.
00:19:32Can you believe that?
00:19:33A Ford-backed company.
00:19:35Compare that right at the top end,
00:19:38174 points for Ferrari
00:19:40with four for Jaguar Racer.
00:19:43It's been a tough year for them.
00:19:45They may lose this man, Weber.
00:19:49This is at Turn 9.
00:19:50You've got to get that curb right there.
00:19:53And you want to make a good exit here
00:19:55because it's quite a long run down to Turn 12.
00:19:57They may lose their sponsor, HSBC Bank.
00:20:02Ford is eyeing the program, we are told.
00:20:08It is not inexpensive.
00:20:22Weber, 14-8.
00:20:23So he actually improves over his first lap performance
00:20:26when he did a 15-09-3.
00:20:30Well, they have got an improved package this week too.
00:20:33Isn't that right, Steve?
00:20:34I suppose to have a little bit more power
00:20:35that engine and they've got an aero package.
00:20:40So they need to be improving.
00:20:41Yeah, all the teams around this part of the season
00:20:44are starting to produce...
00:20:45I mean, aero tweaks are coming on every week.
00:20:47They should be.
00:20:48I mean, down to B and C and D models.
00:20:49Yeah, I mean, any day that the wind tunnel
00:20:52is not producing some positive figures
00:20:54is a complete waste of money.
00:20:55There's no point in having it.
00:20:56So they're all making progress.
00:20:58Well, they need to as well.
00:21:00I mean, this...
00:21:00Whoa, whoa, look at the car there.
00:21:03This is Christian Clean,
00:21:04who raced here often in the minor formula.
00:21:08He says he was never off the podium.
00:21:11He knows this track well.
00:21:15Again, it's important for Christian Clean's career
00:21:17to be quicker than Mark Webber
00:21:19if he could possibly crank it out,
00:21:21which is what he was trying to do there in turn three.
00:21:23He's all got a bit away from him.
00:21:27Another change coming for Jaguar.
00:21:29Christian Clean could be their team leader next year.
00:21:32Well, they need to do something.
00:21:34I'll tell you, because again,
00:21:35looking at the Constructors' Championship,
00:21:36I see ahead of Jaguar is Jordan.
00:21:39And I mean, they're a customer of Ford
00:21:42and they're outperforming the works team.
00:21:44And look at the Jordan chassis, right?
00:21:47I mean...
00:21:48And well ahead of them is Zalba.
00:21:57I don't want it to sound like
00:21:58I'm getting really down on Jaguar.
00:22:00I know what your point is.
00:22:02You know, it's...
00:22:03Yes, it's expensive.
00:22:04Yes, it's difficult.
00:22:05But either get serious or get out.
00:22:08That's right.
00:22:08Absolutely.
00:22:11Ford announced
00:22:11record profits.
00:22:13$1.2 billion or so, I noticed, recently.
00:22:17Let's go racing.
00:22:20Welcome back to the Hockenheim Ring
00:22:22in southern Germany.
00:22:24Not far from the banks of the Rhine River.
00:22:26This is qualifying for Sunday's
00:22:28German Formula One Grand Prix.
00:22:30Round 12 of the 2004 season.
00:22:32Along with Steve Matchett and David Hobbs,
00:22:34I'm Bob Varsha.
00:22:35This is Takuma Sato who crashed his BAR Honda
00:22:39this morning in the first practice session.
00:22:41Missed the second session while the car was repaired.
00:22:44And here he is.
00:22:46And this team has an interesting technical device
00:22:48that they brought this weekend,
00:22:50but are not using a differential at the front end
00:22:53to prevent lockup.
00:22:54But at this point,
00:22:55I'll defer to Steve Matchett.
00:22:57Yes, it's a very trick device.
00:23:00Think back to the 1998 season
00:23:02when Nick Worth was working with Bannerton Formula.
00:23:04They developed this,
00:23:05what they called the front torque transfer system.
00:23:08It's basically two drive shafts
00:23:10connected to a little differential unit
00:23:12mounted inside the nose.
00:23:13because the idea was
00:23:14to prevent the wheel locking,
00:23:16the unladen wheel locking
00:23:18the inside wheel at Cornish.
00:23:19You could transfer the drive
00:23:21from the laden wheel
00:23:22to the unladen wheel
00:23:23to keep the thing in motion.
00:23:26Well, they had it.
00:23:28BAR had developed their own system
00:23:29of them,
00:23:30put it onto the car yesterday.
00:23:32But Charlie Whiting again stepped in and said,
00:23:34despite the fact that BAR
00:23:35thought they had clearance to run the system,
00:23:38Charlie Whiting and the FIF said,
00:23:40ah, no.
00:23:41Whoa!
00:23:41Pretty wide down that XLR's corner.
00:23:44We're not giving you permission to run that.
00:23:46Get it off the car.
00:23:47And it is off the car.
00:23:48Mind you, look at that for the moment.
00:23:50Now, Sato is significantly slower
00:23:51than his teammate Button this weekend.
00:23:53Right there is the Bannerton we're talking about.
00:23:55That is the 98 Bannerton
00:23:57that was fitted with that front torque transfer system.
00:23:59It went out of favor because it was too heavy.
00:24:02It really didn't work
00:24:03because the weight penalty of carrying the unit,
00:24:05like 8 to 10 kilograms up the front of the car,
00:24:08really negated any effect,
00:24:09any beneficial effect of running the system.
00:24:11But now, as we keep saying,
00:24:12the teams want to push the weight
00:24:13and the ballast further forward,
00:24:14it's coming back into vote.
00:24:16About a two-tenth improvement for Takuma Sato
00:24:19from his first round time.
00:24:20He is provisional pole,
00:24:22and the German air horns go off
00:24:25because here comes a Ferrari,
00:24:27sort of the adopted home team of all Germany,
00:24:30thanks to Michael Schumacher.
00:24:32Here's Barrichello.
00:24:34He says he turned down a big bucks offer
00:24:36from Williams to take one of their seats next year
00:24:39in order to stay with Ferrari.
00:24:42Once again this weekend,
00:24:43he got a vote of confidence from his teammate,
00:24:45the six-time world champion,
00:24:46who said,
00:24:46why make a change
00:24:47if you don't think you're going to get something better?
00:24:51Schumacher then took the time to say,
00:24:53besides which,
00:24:54I don't think the likes of Alonso or Raikkonen
00:24:56are ready for the way we do things at Ferrari yet.
00:25:00Touche.
00:25:01202 miles an hour for the 053 engine Ferrari.
00:25:05That match is drawn.
00:25:06So again,
00:25:07these guys have got a lot of fuel on board.
00:25:09Looking at how they qualified
00:25:10in that provisional qualifying session way down.
00:25:12We know the car works well.
00:25:13Well,
00:25:14I'm going to say practically everywhere.
00:25:15I actually say everywhere
00:25:17we've been so far this season.
00:25:19So this must be,
00:25:20again,
00:25:22way down a fuel.
00:25:29Marichello 14-2.
00:25:30Barely quicker than Sato and the Honda.
00:25:33Boy,
00:25:33oh boy,
00:25:34this is going to be a strange old grid,
00:25:36isn't it?
00:25:36Because these Ferraris
00:25:37could find themselves mired
00:25:38right in the middle of the pack
00:25:39and although we've seen those tactics
00:25:41and Michael Schumacher's brilliance
00:25:43bring him to the fore,
00:25:44if you're too far down,
00:25:46it's going to be a hell of a struggle.
00:25:47There's the lockup we're talking about,
00:25:48which is what the front torque transfer system
00:25:50is trying to cure.
00:25:52What happens when you turn into a corner
00:25:54like you turn right
00:25:55and the weight transfers
00:25:56to the opposite side,
00:25:57the opposite outside wheel,
00:25:59in this case,
00:25:59the left wheel.
00:26:01No energy,
00:26:02no mass on the unladen wheel
00:26:03and it just locks.
00:26:04You want to stop that.
00:26:05You want to avoid it if you can.
00:26:07Ferrari haven't had a great career here.
00:26:09Michael Schumacher's on the pole in 02.
00:26:11That's the only Ferrari pole here for,
00:26:14well,
00:26:14since he started driving,
00:26:15probably at least.
00:26:16And Michael Schumacher won this race
00:26:17in 95 in a Benetton
00:26:18and he won it in 02 in a Ferrari
00:26:20and that's it for him here.
00:26:22Compared to Magni Corp and Canada
00:26:25where he's won it seven times,
00:26:27he's only managed to win his home race twice.
00:26:29That's Rubens Baracalo.
00:26:30Had a great win here
00:26:31in combined wet-dry conditions.
00:26:34That was a win.
00:26:36That was a great race.
00:26:37And that was on the old track
00:26:38where you could overtake,
00:26:39yeah,
00:26:39there's long blasting straights,
00:26:41then down to those tight chicanes
00:26:42and he picked them off
00:26:43one by one
00:26:44going to those chicanes.
00:26:45It was fantastic.
00:26:46That, guys,
00:26:47was 206 miles an hour
00:26:49for Michael Schumacher
00:26:50in the F2004.
00:26:51That's the fastest speed trap
00:26:52all weekend.
00:26:54206 miles.
00:26:55Maybe the Ferrari split
00:26:56their strategies again.
00:26:57Michael could be very quick.
00:26:58Look at that number.
00:27:00Maybe Michael's going for pole.
00:27:01You don't want to be
00:27:02at mid-pack
00:27:02in that rushdown
00:27:03to turn one
00:27:04on the opening lap.
00:27:05Boy, I'll say you that.
00:27:20Ah!
00:27:2113-3.
00:27:23Now you're talking,
00:27:24turkey.
00:27:24That is the same speed
00:27:25that Montoya did this morning.
00:27:27Right.
00:27:29That's a full second quicker
00:27:30or near enough.
00:27:31It makes no difference.
00:27:34It looks like Ferrari
00:27:35have split their strategies again.
00:27:37And with all due respect
00:27:38to Rubens Botticello,
00:27:39I suppose that big cheer
00:27:40as he was coming around
00:27:41to complete his lap
00:27:42was not because it was Rubens
00:27:44but because Michael
00:27:45was going out
00:27:46in the back door
00:27:46of the pits.
00:27:47That's right.
00:27:47Well, they've had
00:27:48fantastic reliability
00:27:49for Ferrari,
00:27:50but actually their last
00:27:51in-race reliability problem
00:27:53for Michael Schumacher
00:27:54was here in 2001.
00:27:55If you remember,
00:27:55they had fuel pickup problems.
00:27:57That was the last time
00:27:59Michael Schumacher
00:28:00had mechanical problems
00:28:02in a race
00:28:042001.
00:28:05We're, of course,
00:28:06you know,
00:28:06way, way beyond that now.
00:28:08That's the sort of thing
00:28:09that scores the point,
00:28:10consistency.
00:28:11Of course,
00:28:12you've got the great
00:28:12driving talent
00:28:13and the car is very quick
00:28:14but you've got to have
00:28:15the consistency in the car
00:28:16to finish the races
00:28:17to score those points.
00:28:19And, of course,
00:28:20you had a flat tire last year.
00:28:21You remember,
00:28:21you cut the tire down
00:28:22and ended up,
00:28:22where did he end up
00:28:23last year,
00:28:23seventh?
00:28:28Look at those hands.
00:28:29So quiet.
00:28:30Notice the scalloping
00:28:31along the bottom
00:28:32of those barge boards.
00:28:33Ross Braun gets a giggle
00:28:35out of the whole thing.
00:28:36One-upped them all again,
00:28:37eh, Ross?
00:28:39But the front wing
00:28:41on the Ferrari
00:28:41this weekend,
00:28:42it looks like something
00:28:43from Rube Goldberg
00:28:44in all of the nips
00:28:46and tucks.
00:28:47It's just fabulous.
00:28:48And we'll get a look
00:28:49a little later on.
00:29:03Welcome back
00:29:04to the Hockenheim Ring
00:29:05as the technical crew
00:29:06goes out to push
00:29:09the Ubermeister
00:29:10Michael Schumacher
00:29:11into the garage
00:29:12for weighing
00:29:13the other tech inspections.
00:29:15Continuing with our policy
00:29:16of bringing you
00:29:17every lap
00:29:18of qualifying
00:29:19for each Grand Prix.
00:29:22Right now on track
00:29:23warming up
00:29:23is Giancarlo Fisichella
00:29:25in the Sauber,
00:29:26but of course
00:29:26this is Schumacher country.
00:29:31I can imagine
00:29:32the hushed tones
00:29:32in the German announced booth
00:29:33as Michael's Ferrari
00:29:35is being pushed
00:29:35into the pit.
00:29:3818th green,
00:29:39Augusta National,
00:29:40out of nowhere.
00:29:42Cinderella story.
00:29:44He got all of that one.
00:29:46Well, the crowd
00:29:47certainly liked it.
00:29:48There's no doubt about that.
00:29:49You saw a lot of
00:29:50there's Felipe Massa
00:29:51looking at the data
00:29:53in front of him
00:29:53with the five.
00:29:55We'll be watching
00:29:56this lap closely
00:29:57because this is his teammate.
00:29:58Although
00:30:00the Sauber career
00:30:01of Giancarlo Fisichella
00:30:02may not be moving on
00:30:04much further.
00:30:05We understand
00:30:05Fisichella may be in line
00:30:07to replace
00:30:07Siarno Trulli at Renault
00:30:09next year.
00:30:10Trulli possibly
00:30:11going to Toyota
00:30:12to partner
00:30:12Ralph Schumacher
00:30:13and yada yada yada.
00:30:15Welcome to the silly season.
00:30:19What a corner this is.
00:30:20That's a very fast corner.
00:30:22Like Cops at Silverstone.
00:30:23And they've modified
00:30:24the curb on the inside.
00:30:27They've got some funny
00:30:28little stubs
00:30:29on the top of the curb
00:30:30and have whipped the wing
00:30:31off two or three cars
00:30:32this weekend.
00:30:33So you've obviously
00:30:33got to be a bit careful
00:30:34going through there now.
00:30:4016.5 that first sector.
00:30:42Good enough
00:30:42to put him third.
00:30:44Top speed number.
00:30:52And yes,
00:30:52I am reaching
00:30:53for my calculator.
00:30:54200 miles an hour.
00:30:55Roughly 201.
00:30:58Bit of a different
00:30:59engine though
00:30:59to that Ferrari V10.
00:31:10Wow, look at that drop-off
00:31:11in that second sector.
00:31:22He's going to try
00:31:23and nudge De Marta
00:31:24out of that
00:31:25sixth spot on the grid,
00:31:27sixth spot that is so far.
00:31:33Which he does.
00:31:3415.3 for Fisichella.
00:31:37Well, they like that.
00:31:38Very happy and deep
00:31:39with that, aren't they?
00:31:40I wonder if he's got
00:31:41enough fuel on board
00:31:42to do his...
00:31:43Well, you know,
00:31:44if he has,
00:31:45that's a good time.
00:31:45Well, slower
00:31:46what he was this morning.
00:31:48Yeah, I'll bet you
00:31:48they're doing that
00:31:49two-stop strategy again.
00:31:52Thinking about that engine,
00:31:53I was reading your new book,
00:31:54Steve,
00:31:54The Chariot Makers,
00:31:55and you talked about
00:31:56how the Benetton
00:31:56or Ford engineers
00:31:57discovered
00:31:58that water injection
00:32:00in the engine
00:32:00not only cooled
00:32:01but gave more power.
00:32:03That's an old
00:32:03fighter airplane trick.
00:32:05Does that sort of thing
00:32:06still go on?
00:32:06No, they banned water injection.
00:32:08Okay.
00:32:09Yeah, it was a very
00:32:10interesting time.
00:32:11It was in the time
00:32:11of the turbos
00:32:12when the engines
00:32:12were running so hard
00:32:13and they were trying to
00:32:15cool the temperatures
00:32:16inside because of the
00:32:17colossal horsepower figures
00:32:19they were getting.
00:32:21and it still seems
00:32:22to this day
00:32:23to be a little bit
00:32:23of a blackout
00:32:24when I talk to
00:32:24different engineers
00:32:25about it.
00:32:26They say they're not
00:32:26entirely sure why
00:32:28but water injection
00:32:29was producing
00:32:29more horsepower.
00:32:30It used to be
00:32:31all the raids
00:32:32water injection.
00:32:33There's that turn six
00:32:34where you're out
00:32:35breaking yourself
00:32:35so easily.
00:32:36But Coulthard spun
00:32:37twice yesterday.
00:32:39And of course
00:32:40that's why the cars
00:32:41at Le Mans
00:32:41you know
00:32:42do you have one
00:32:42of those cool
00:32:43summer nights
00:32:44and a bit of
00:32:45mist comes up
00:32:46you go rollicking
00:32:47down the old
00:32:48straight there
00:32:48about four or five
00:32:49mile an hour
00:32:50quicker than you do
00:32:50in the day.
00:32:51Yeah.
00:32:51Bad news you can't
00:32:52see.
00:32:52The good news is
00:32:53you're going faster.
00:32:54Yeah, right.
00:32:54Exactly.
00:32:55Go on Dave
00:32:56give me some welly.
00:32:57Well, I agree
00:32:58with your analysis Steve.
00:33:00I think it's
00:33:00the extra oxygen
00:33:01provided by the
00:33:02water molecules.
00:33:03I mean that's kind
00:33:04of where I'm going
00:33:05with it Bob
00:33:05I'd say but
00:33:07you have to have
00:33:08a stab at these
00:33:09things occasionally
00:33:09don't you
00:33:10try and make a guess
00:33:10of why it works.
00:33:11I think the cool line
00:33:12I'll swear to it.
00:33:13And the cooling
00:33:14and the combustion
00:33:14chain is a little
00:33:15bit of it.
00:33:15Yeah.
00:33:18Asa to the line
00:33:1915-6
00:33:19so apparently
00:33:20the Sauber
00:33:21teammates are on
00:33:22a similar pit
00:33:23strategy
00:33:24with regard to
00:33:25fuel on board.
00:33:26There's one
00:33:26Pablo Montoya
00:33:27getting his ears
00:33:28ready for his
00:33:29one lap
00:33:30to find his
00:33:30place on the
00:33:31grid.
00:33:31We'll be right
00:33:32back.
00:33:36Welcome back
00:33:36to the Hockenheim
00:33:37Ring final
00:33:38qualifying for the
00:33:39Formula One Grand
00:33:40Prix of Germany
00:33:40here on Speed
00:33:41Channel.
00:33:42This is Kimi
00:33:42Raikkonen
00:33:43runner-up at the
00:33:44British Grand
00:33:45Prix two weeks
00:33:45ago at Silverstone
00:33:46and he completely
00:33:48revamped McLaren
00:33:51MP4-19b and he's
00:33:53off to a good
00:33:53start.
00:33:54Runner-up from
00:33:55pole.
00:33:56I mean he set a
00:33:57tremendous time
00:33:58and of course the
00:33:58first appearance of
00:33:59the car was a week
00:34:01before that in
00:34:01France and David
00:34:02Coulthard qualified
00:34:03at third.
00:34:05David Coulthard in
00:34:06the pre-qualifying
00:34:07this morning ran
00:34:08quicker than
00:34:09Reifling so that's
00:34:09going to be interesting
00:34:10to see if he can do
00:34:11that because David
00:34:11Coulthard is another
00:34:12guy to that point
00:34:13of his career
00:34:14where he's going
00:34:14to make some good
00:34:15showings.
00:34:17Keep that income
00:34:18high.
00:34:22Now's his second
00:34:23sector right
00:34:23and the quickest
00:34:24in the first.
00:34:25Yeah 16-1
00:34:26three seconds.
00:34:27That's the fastest
00:34:28of the day.
00:34:29Yeah by two tenths
00:34:30over anybody else.
00:34:31Well he lost
00:34:32some time though.
00:34:33This of course
00:34:34is a critical
00:34:34sector's last
00:34:35sector a lot
00:34:36of corners all
00:34:37jammed into this
00:34:38last short-dish
00:34:39sector.
00:34:40Could split the
00:34:41Ferraris.
00:34:44Crashed out of
00:34:45the race a year
00:34:45ago at turn
00:34:46one to the
00:34:47line.
00:34:50Second.
00:34:50Does split the
00:34:51Ferraris.
00:34:5213-6 for
00:34:53Raikkonen.
00:34:54That's a couple
00:34:54of tenths quicker
00:34:55than he went
00:34:55this morning.
00:34:56Of course the
00:34:57crowd here
00:34:57terribly torn.
00:34:58You've got
00:34:58Mercedes engines
00:34:59in the McLaren.
00:35:00You've got
00:35:00BMW engines
00:35:03in the Williams
00:35:04for Montoya
00:35:05there and of
00:35:06course you've got
00:35:06the German
00:35:06driver Michael
00:35:07Schumacher.
00:35:08So a lot of
00:35:09fans on hand
00:35:10for a lot of
00:35:11different reasons.
00:35:12Mercedes make
00:35:13this a big
00:35:14event every
00:35:14year.
00:35:15They have a
00:35:16now look how
00:35:17much wider he
00:35:17went there
00:35:18though than
00:35:18Michael Schumacher
00:35:19to get that
00:35:19time.
00:35:20Michael Schumacher
00:35:20barely got off
00:35:22the blacktop
00:35:23let alone
00:35:24onto the
00:35:24green top.
00:35:24and there is
00:35:25Norbert Howe
00:35:26getting Mercedes
00:35:27right there.
00:35:30Yeah big
00:35:30sponsorship
00:35:31showing and
00:35:32everything from
00:35:32Mercedes here.
00:35:33A lot of
00:35:34press parties
00:35:36put on for
00:35:36them.
00:35:36They take
00:35:36around the
00:35:37factory.
00:35:37They take
00:35:38on the
00:35:38circling
00:35:38different
00:35:38Mercedes cars.
00:35:40They want
00:35:41to do well.
00:35:42They want to
00:35:42do well at
00:35:42every race.
00:35:43Of course
00:35:43they do.
00:35:43But this is
00:35:44not very far
00:35:44from the
00:35:45factory at
00:35:45Stuttgart.
00:35:45No absolutely.
00:35:46Well the
00:35:46Arno Trulli
00:35:47quicker again
00:35:48so maybe
00:35:49he's going
00:35:49to come
00:35:50off that
00:35:50huge shunt
00:35:52two weeks
00:35:52ago at
00:35:53Britain when
00:35:54he came
00:35:54under the
00:35:54bridge turn.
00:35:56They believe
00:35:56a suspension
00:35:57failure caused
00:35:59Trulli to
00:35:59spear into
00:36:00the tyre wall.
00:36:03Bob you were
00:36:03asking me about
00:36:04the chassis
00:36:04yesterday.
00:36:05What became
00:36:05of that chassis
00:36:06and was it
00:36:07fit to race?
00:36:08Yeah I was
00:36:08talking to
00:36:08Alan Comane
00:36:09Trulli's
00:36:09engineer last
00:36:10night.
00:36:11That chassis
00:36:11was past
00:36:12fit.
00:36:13They did a
00:36:13little bit of
00:36:13cosmetic work to
00:36:14it but it is
00:36:15now the
00:36:15spare car
00:36:16sitting in
00:36:16the pits
00:36:17ready to
00:36:18go if
00:36:18need be.
00:36:20And thus
00:36:20denying
00:36:20some rich
00:36:21collector
00:36:21a new
00:36:22coffee table.
00:36:26A little bit
00:36:27off in that
00:36:27second sector
00:36:28quite a bit
00:36:29off in that.
00:36:31Really has a
00:36:32shot at
00:36:33Barrichello
00:36:33P3.
00:36:38And on to
00:36:39the front
00:36:40line.
00:36:43Yep.
00:36:43Third bumping
00:36:44Barrichello.
00:36:48There's
00:36:49Flavio
00:36:49Briatore.
00:36:50There are
00:36:50the Trulli
00:36:51fans in the
00:36:51crowd.
00:36:51Let's take
00:36:52you back
00:36:52two weeks
00:36:52ago.
00:36:53Late
00:36:53stages of
00:36:54the British
00:36:54Grand
00:36:54Prix.
00:36:55Watch
00:36:55this.
00:37:00Boy, look
00:37:01how that
00:37:01rolled by a
00:37:02rolled hoop
00:37:03and everything
00:37:03stood up
00:37:03under that
00:37:04enormous
00:37:04impact.
00:37:05It digs into
00:37:05the gravel
00:37:06here.
00:37:06little bit.
00:37:09I'm not
00:37:10entirely sure I
00:37:10approved of
00:37:11the Marshall
00:37:12getting truly
00:37:13out of the
00:37:13car that
00:37:14quick and
00:37:14running off
00:37:15with him
00:37:15on the
00:37:16barriers.
00:37:17I mean, I
00:37:17could see the
00:37:17safety point
00:37:18of that, of
00:37:18getting him
00:37:18away in case
00:37:19another car was
00:37:19coming around,
00:37:20but it was a big
00:37:20accident.
00:37:22But to say
00:37:23that the
00:37:23chassis was
00:37:24just past
00:37:25fit to race
00:37:26after that
00:37:26shunt is
00:37:27great testament
00:37:28to the way
00:37:29these cars
00:37:29have improved
00:37:30really since
00:37:31the death of
00:37:32Enten Center
00:37:33in 1994.
00:37:33That was the
00:37:34big turning
00:37:34forth in
00:37:35safety in
00:37:35modern Formula
00:37:36One, I
00:37:36believe.
00:37:36Let's tip
00:37:37our hats to
00:37:37the FIA
00:37:38regulators who
00:37:39insist that
00:37:39the cars be
00:37:40that strong.
00:37:42Well, that's
00:37:4216.3.
00:37:44It's good
00:37:45enough.
00:37:45Schumacher
00:37:46did a 16.3.
00:37:48Barrichello
00:37:48did a 16.3.
00:37:50Reigen
00:37:50did a 16.1
00:37:51in that first
00:37:52sector, so
00:37:53Olivier Pannis
00:37:54well on the
00:37:54pace in that
00:37:55first sector.
00:37:56He just
00:37:57cracked out
00:37:57197 miles
00:37:58an hour
00:37:59through the
00:37:59speed trap
00:37:59for Pannis'
00:38:00teammate
00:38:02194 for
00:38:03the matter.
00:38:04Just
00:38:04three miles
00:38:05an hour
00:38:06quicker.
00:38:06Losing a bit
00:38:07of time there.
00:38:09Olivier Pannis
00:38:09good run
00:38:10in the first
00:38:11session
00:38:1113.640
00:38:1437 years
00:38:15old now
00:38:15Olivier
00:38:17poor old
00:38:18boy
00:38:18at it.
00:38:20This
00:38:21old section
00:38:21of the
00:38:21track
00:38:22the stadium
00:38:22section
00:38:22the asphalt
00:38:23is completely
00:38:24different to
00:38:25how they've
00:38:25configured the
00:38:26rest of the
00:38:26track.
00:38:27It's got a
00:38:27different coefficient
00:38:28of grip on
00:38:28it.
00:38:29We'd really
00:38:30want to use
00:38:31softer tires
00:38:32but you can't
00:38:33do it because
00:38:33that old infield
00:38:34section rips the
00:38:35tires to pieces
00:38:36so it kind of
00:38:36forces the
00:38:37teams to use
00:38:38the harder
00:38:38compound and
00:38:39they compromised
00:38:40on the rest
00:38:40of the track.
00:38:4114.3
00:38:42slots Olivier
00:38:43Pannis
00:38:45into the
00:38:45sixth spot
00:38:46just behind
00:38:47Takuma
00:38:47Sato and
00:38:48ahead of
00:38:48Mark
00:38:48Weber.
00:38:49And of
00:38:49course another
00:38:49huge rivalry
00:38:50that's starting
00:38:51in Formula
00:38:52One and is
00:38:52going to
00:38:53continue for
00:38:53the foreseeable
00:38:54future of
00:38:54course is
00:38:55the Asian
00:38:56giants Honda
00:38:56and Toyota
00:38:58really Toyota
00:38:59is the only
00:38:59company that
00:39:00Honda worry
00:39:00about and I
00:39:01don't think
00:39:02that Toyota
00:39:02worry too
00:39:02much about
00:39:03Honda because
00:39:03they are
00:39:03significantly
00:39:04bigger but
00:39:05they are
00:39:05huge rivals.
00:39:06is Kimi
00:39:07Räikkönen
00:39:07with a
00:39:08shrug
00:39:10holding on
00:39:10to P2
00:39:11on the
00:39:11provisional
00:39:12grid as
00:39:12Juan Pablo
00:39:13Montoya
00:39:13begins his
00:39:14preparations.
00:39:17He's got a
00:39:18lot to think
00:39:18about.
00:39:19A lot of
00:39:20different
00:39:20strategies going
00:39:21on out there.
00:39:21It's like a
00:39:22lot of the
00:39:22heavy hitters
00:39:23are running
00:39:24heavy with
00:39:24fuel.
00:39:25Montoya has
00:39:26to be wondering
00:39:26what are they
00:39:27thinking.
00:39:28But Toyota
00:39:28with a new
00:39:29car here,
00:39:30new engine,
00:39:30new car or
00:39:31significantly
00:39:32revised car,
00:39:33not making
00:39:34the impression
00:39:34here that
00:39:35McLaren made
00:39:36three weeks
00:39:38ago in the
00:39:38French Grand
00:39:39Prix where
00:39:39the car was
00:39:40obviously
00:39:40instantly hugely
00:39:42more successful
00:39:43than the one
00:39:44before.
00:39:44This Toyota
00:39:45not showing
00:39:46the same
00:39:47sort of step
00:39:48forward.
00:39:51It's a super
00:39:52slow-mo look
00:39:53at Olivier
00:39:53Pennis at
00:39:54work.
00:39:55Nice to see
00:39:56a driver out
00:39:56there who was
00:39:57born before I
00:39:58graduated from
00:39:59college.
00:40:00We'll be back
00:40:01in a moment.
00:40:06Welcome
00:40:06back.
00:40:07David Coulthard
00:40:07rolls out in
00:40:08the McLaren
00:40:09Mercedes.
00:40:11As he begins
00:40:12to warm up,
00:40:12we want to
00:40:12remind you to
00:40:13join us tomorrow
00:40:14for live coverage
00:40:15of the German
00:40:15Grand Prix
00:40:16beginning at
00:40:167.30 a.m.
00:40:17Eastern with
00:40:18the Acura
00:40:18Pre-Race Show
00:40:19featuring Peter
00:40:20Windsor on
00:40:21site at the
00:40:21Hockenheim Ring.
00:40:22This week,
00:40:23Peter will get
00:40:23some reaction
00:40:24to the latest
00:40:24proposed rule
00:40:25changes in
00:40:26Formula One and
00:40:26show us the
00:40:27new super
00:40:27helmets the
00:40:28drivers are
00:40:29required to
00:40:29wear.
00:40:29That's tomorrow
00:40:30morning,
00:40:317.30 Eastern,
00:40:32live, only on
00:40:32speed.
00:40:33However,
00:40:34the event is
00:40:34subject to
00:40:35blackout.
00:40:37Ron Dennis on
00:40:38the left,
00:40:39Norbert Haug
00:40:39there.
00:40:41Getting a lot
00:40:42of attention
00:40:42from the
00:40:43German TV
00:40:43crew.
00:40:45Here is David
00:40:46Coulthard in
00:40:47that tight
00:40:47hairpin when
00:40:48he had so
00:40:48many problems
00:40:49yesterday.
00:40:50Let's take a
00:40:50look at what
00:40:51David Coulthard
00:40:52went through.
00:40:53The problem
00:40:54was his
00:40:55braking,
00:40:55Steve.
00:40:56He kept
00:40:57adjusting the
00:40:57brake bars
00:40:58front to
00:40:58rear,
00:40:59which is
00:41:00something you
00:41:00expect the
00:41:01drivers to do.
00:41:01You want the
00:41:02drivers to do
00:41:02that in
00:41:02Friday practice
00:41:03so they
00:41:03can try and
00:41:04push the
00:41:04braking zone
00:41:05as far into
00:41:06the apex of
00:41:07the corner
00:41:07as they can.
00:41:08But he
00:41:09really did
00:41:09have trouble
00:41:10finding out
00:41:11exactly how
00:41:11much he
00:41:12could push
00:41:12that braking
00:41:13zone.
00:41:13It was
00:41:13amazing.
00:41:14He had
00:41:14so many
00:41:15problems
00:41:15yesterday.
00:41:16And today
00:41:16he was
00:41:16actually
00:41:17quicker than
00:41:17Kimi Raikkonen
00:41:18in pre-qualifying.
00:41:19And let's
00:41:19see if he can
00:41:20do it again
00:41:20now.
00:41:22He carried
00:41:23out a rear
00:41:25spring change
00:41:25on Coulthard's
00:41:27MP4-19
00:41:28beat.
00:41:29It seems to
00:41:29have given
00:41:30them a little
00:41:30bit better
00:41:30traction.
00:41:33After
00:41:33Silverstone
00:41:34where he
00:41:34was significantly
00:41:35slower than
00:41:35his teammate
00:41:36Kimi Raikkonen
00:41:36and David
00:41:37Coulthard said
00:41:38almost wistfully,
00:41:39I hope there was
00:41:41something wrong
00:41:41with my car.
00:41:42As you pointed out
00:41:43earlier, David,
00:41:44he really is racing
00:41:45for his career
00:41:46right now.
00:41:48and he has
00:41:49just hated
00:41:50to single
00:41:50that qualifying
00:41:51right from
00:41:51its inception
00:41:52last year.
00:41:54But look at
00:41:55that.
00:41:56That is good
00:41:57to get in
00:41:57bowl.
00:42:02I'm a little
00:42:02wistful about
00:42:03this place.
00:42:04This is the
00:42:04only current
00:42:04Formula One
00:42:05track that
00:42:05I've actually
00:42:06driven in
00:42:06a race car.
00:42:07And it
00:42:08looks a lot
00:42:09wider on
00:42:09these television
00:42:10pictures than
00:42:11it does when
00:42:11you're looking
00:42:11out the
00:42:11windscreen.
00:42:14He looked
00:42:15a bit better
00:42:15through turn
00:42:15six then
00:42:16than he did
00:42:17with some
00:42:17of those
00:42:17shots from
00:42:18yesterday.
00:42:20It's a key
00:42:20corner, that
00:42:21nine.
00:42:21It's a medium
00:42:22speed, but
00:42:22boy, if you
00:42:23could just
00:42:23maintain just
00:42:24a few RPM
00:42:24quicker through
00:42:25there, it's
00:42:26going to help
00:42:27enormously.
00:42:27Obviously, you
00:42:27got to exit
00:42:28that turn
00:42:28there.
00:42:29Look at
00:42:29that.
00:42:29This is
00:42:30looking good
00:42:30enough for
00:42:31pole position
00:42:32so far, but
00:42:33some very
00:42:33fast runners
00:42:34to come.
00:42:35Alonso,
00:42:35Button,
00:42:36Pisonia,
00:42:36and Montoya.
00:42:37Well, let's
00:42:37start at the
00:42:38beginning.
00:42:38He is
00:42:39significantly
00:42:39quicker than
00:42:40his teammate
00:42:41right now.
00:42:41Absolutely.
00:42:45But the
00:42:45third sector
00:42:46this morning
00:42:46was not
00:42:47his best
00:42:47sector.
00:42:48Let's see
00:42:48what happens
00:42:48today.
00:42:49They've used
00:42:50a lot less
00:42:50road there
00:42:51than Kimi
00:42:51Raikkonen.
00:42:52Wow, lost
00:42:53it all again.
00:42:54Yep, and
00:42:55he comes in
00:42:55behind Raikkonen
00:42:56in third.
00:42:58But in
00:42:59front of
00:42:59Jano, truly,
00:43:01pushing Rubens
00:43:02Barrichello
00:43:02into fifth
00:43:03spot.
00:43:04Yeah, Ferrari
00:43:05back on the
00:43:06third row.
00:43:07Third row, yeah.
00:43:09Now, there
00:43:10are a lot
00:43:10of steps
00:43:11still to
00:43:11come before
00:43:12McLaren wins
00:43:13again, and
00:43:13when they do,
00:43:14however, watch
00:43:16for all the
00:43:16media to cover
00:43:18one British
00:43:19journalist, whose
00:43:20name is Bob
00:43:21McKenzie, who
00:43:22has sworn
00:43:23publicly that he
00:43:24would run
00:43:24naked around
00:43:25the Silverstone
00:43:26Circuit if, in
00:43:27fact, McLaren
00:43:28wins this year.
00:43:29Ron Dennis
00:43:30says, I would be
00:43:30delighted to hold
00:43:31him to that, and
00:43:32we intend to
00:43:33hold him to
00:43:34that, but we
00:43:35understand from
00:43:36our Alan Henry
00:43:36that there may be
00:43:37moves afoot to get
00:43:38McKenzie off the
00:43:39hook.
00:43:40Yeah, I got to
00:43:41believe that
00:43:42McLaren are going
00:43:42to win a race
00:43:43this year, they're
00:43:43going so well.
00:43:44Of course, are
00:43:46these people going
00:43:46to, Alonso, of
00:43:47course, winner of
00:43:48the Hungarian
00:43:48Grand Prix from
00:43:49Pol last year, coming
00:43:50up here in three
00:43:52weeks' time.
00:43:53Well, they've got
00:43:54some more.
00:43:55That's a good time
00:43:55too, that's good
00:43:56enough for the
00:43:56front row.
00:43:57more engine revisions
00:43:58have gone on to
00:43:59the lump for this
00:43:59race.
00:44:00A little bit of
00:44:01aerodynamic work as
00:44:02well, but they are
00:44:03coming on every race.
00:44:04This team is making
00:44:05progress.
00:44:06Now, they always
00:44:07seem to have very
00:44:07good mechanical grip,
00:44:08but they too have
00:44:09been a bit slow in
00:44:10that third sector,
00:44:11which is where you'd
00:44:11expect them to pick up
00:44:12time.
00:44:13He'll be 23 years
00:44:15old next Thursday.
00:44:16Of course, last year
00:44:17in Hungary, he became
00:44:18the youngest ever
00:44:19Formula One winner.
00:44:20So young, in fact,
00:44:21that he would still
00:44:25be the third youngest
00:44:26winner in Formula One
00:44:27history if he would
00:44:28have won this race
00:44:29on Sunday.
00:44:30Look at that.
00:44:30Very good time in
00:44:31that second sector.
00:44:36This is a sector he
00:44:37should pick up time
00:44:38in, unless they've
00:44:39trimmed it out too
00:44:41much to try and get
00:44:42some top speed,
00:44:43because they are a
00:44:43little bit down on
00:44:44power.
00:44:44This could be front
00:44:45row stuff for the
00:44:46young Spaniard.
00:44:48No!
00:44:49Wow, you see, again,
00:44:50they lose it all in
00:44:51that last sector where
00:44:52you'd expect to pick
00:44:53time up, but they
00:44:54must have got the
00:44:54thing way trimmed out
00:44:55to keep it up to
00:44:56snuff in the far
00:44:57sectors.
00:44:58A rueful smile from
00:45:00Flavio Briatore.
00:45:01You saw it did
00:45:01nothing to dim the
00:45:03enthusiasm of the
00:45:04Alonso fans in the
00:45:05grandstand.
00:45:06He takes his place
00:45:07outside row two for
00:45:09the moment.
00:45:09We'll be back.
00:45:14Three drivers remain
00:45:16with a shot at pole
00:45:17position for Sunday
00:45:18morning's Formula One
00:45:19German Grand Prix to be
00:45:20seen live here on
00:45:21Speed Channel.
00:45:22This is Jenson Button
00:45:24to be followed by
00:45:25young Antonio Pisonia and
00:45:27Juan Pablo Montoya in
00:45:29the two BMW Williams.
00:45:30But this is the BAR
00:45:31Honda, and Button
00:45:33desperately needs a leg
00:45:34up.
00:45:35After a long string of
00:45:36podiums, the first of his
00:45:37career to start the
00:45:38season, he's been a bit
00:45:40off the boil recently,
00:45:41even though he did
00:45:41finish fourth in his
00:45:43home Grand Prix in
00:45:43Britain two weeks ago.
00:45:45But they were
00:45:45absolutely convinced
00:45:46they were going to be
00:45:46on the podium.
00:45:47And of course, the
00:45:48really terrible thing is
00:45:50after that staggeringly
00:45:51quick first sector, if
00:45:53he's on the pole, he's
00:45:54going to start in tenth
00:45:55spot because he changed
00:45:56his engine on Friday.
00:45:58Part of that desperate
00:45:59rule which nobody likes
00:46:01much.
00:46:02Especially not him,
00:46:03especially not now.
00:46:04Especially not him,
00:46:05not now.
00:46:05Well, that's still,
00:46:07yeah, that's pretty good,
00:46:08that second sector.
00:46:10Once again, the team
00:46:12has had to disengage
00:46:14their very trick front
00:46:16ditch differential to
00:46:18help to prevent lockup
00:46:19under braking of those
00:46:20front Michelins.
00:46:22In the line comes the
00:46:24true Brit.
00:46:26Wow, second, the 13-6.
00:46:31Just a tenth slower than
00:46:32he ran in the opening
00:46:34round of single car.
00:46:35Kimi Raikkonen looking on
00:46:36in the McLaren pits.
00:46:37Juan Pablo Montoya,
00:46:39Montoya.
00:46:39So he's pushed Kimi Raikkonen
00:46:40from that second spot and
00:46:42of course the two really
00:46:43fast guys this morning
00:46:44are coming up now.
00:46:45Montoya, Pisonia first
00:46:47and then Montoya.
00:46:48Well, they've been a busy
00:46:49crew at BAR Honda this
00:46:50weekend.
00:46:51In addition to haranguing
00:46:53the FIA officials about
00:46:54disengaging that front
00:46:55diff, they also lost the
00:46:58engine in Button's car.
00:46:59Anthony Davidson, the
00:47:00third driver on Friday,
00:47:01broke the gearbox and this
00:47:02morning Takuma Sato
00:47:04crashed.
00:47:05That was Ralph Schumacher.
00:47:06You just saw the back of his
00:47:07head.
00:47:07He is here this weekend
00:47:08broken back and all to
00:47:10watch his team in action.
00:47:12And here is his replacement
00:47:13this weekend, replacing
00:47:15Spaniard Marc Genet who
00:47:16drove the last two races for
00:47:17BMW Williams.
00:47:18this is young Brazilian
00:47:20Antonio Pisonia.
00:47:25Not as quick in that first
00:47:26sector as Michael Schumacher
00:47:27nor Jenson Button.
00:47:30Jenson Button of course
00:47:32going to have to start 12th
00:47:33but Pisonia putting on a
00:47:34great show, significantly
00:47:36better than Marc Genet who
00:47:38was a stand in at the last
00:47:39two races.
00:47:40Pisonia really cranking out a
00:47:42staggering lap in pre-
00:47:43qualifying just a few minutes
00:47:45ago.
00:47:46Second only to his teammate
00:47:47Montoya, 201.7 miles an hour
00:47:51of Pisonia in the BMW engine
00:47:55coming up on his 24th birthday.
00:47:57Pisonia dismissed in disgrace
00:48:00from Jaguar last year.
00:48:02This weekend he said he did not
00:48:03get equal treatment with
00:48:04Marc Weber.
00:48:06Jag disputes that but Pisonia
00:48:08has been very quick in the
00:48:09Williams this weekend.
00:48:10He must have a lot of fuel on
00:48:12board or something because
00:48:13he's, this could put him
00:48:14right way down in the middle
00:48:15of the pack.
00:48:17This could put him down with
00:48:18Jenson Button who of course
00:48:19is going to be down there
00:48:20because he's going to lose 10
00:48:21spots.
00:48:21There he is, 10th.
00:48:22Not what he's hoping for I'm
00:48:24sure.
00:48:24But as luck would have it,
00:48:26who did he bump?
00:48:27Marc Weber.
00:48:29In the Jag.
00:48:30His old teammate,
00:48:31Raoul Schumacher looking on
00:48:32there.
00:48:34Very conflicting reports about
00:48:35when he's, a lot of people
00:48:36saying he's going to be in
00:48:37Hungary in two weeks time,
00:48:38three weeks time.
00:48:39But a lot of people saying
00:48:40it's going to be more like
00:48:41Monza in September.
00:48:42Well I'm also hearing that
00:48:43the Williams team has an
00:48:44insurance contract that
00:48:45pays Ralph's salary if he
00:48:47misses four races.
00:48:48Hungary would be race number
00:48:49four.
00:48:50But then you hear that they
00:48:52desperately want him back to
00:48:53try and get themselves up in
00:48:54the, in the, uh,
00:48:55Constructors' Championship.
00:48:56Well if Pisonia can do that
00:48:57for him, I mean Pisonia is
00:48:59quick and could get points
00:49:00this weekend.
00:49:01But right now the point is
00:49:02pole and here's the last man
00:49:04with a shot at it.
00:49:05Quickest in the first session.
00:49:08One Pablo Montoya on pole here
00:49:10last year and of course won by
00:49:12nearly a lap.
00:49:14Quicker in the first sector.
00:49:19That long, long left-hand
00:49:21Parabolica down to turn six.
00:49:23So much depends on this turn.
00:49:24You know, braking just right.
00:49:26You want to brake as late as
00:49:27you can.
00:49:27You leave it just a hair too
00:49:28late.
00:49:29You're skidding off over that
00:49:30Bridgestone stick on the
00:49:31extra of the corner.
00:49:33202.7 miles an hour.
00:49:35So still significantly slower
00:49:37than Michael Schumacher
00:49:38through the speed trap.
00:49:41Nobody throws a car around
00:49:43like this guy does.
00:49:44No, taking a lot of road at
00:49:45nine there.
00:49:45A lot of that curb.
00:49:46So that looked, uh,
00:49:47very smooth too.
00:49:48Yes.
00:49:49Ah!
00:49:51Watch the green.
00:49:52A little bit twitchy out of
00:49:54that corner.
00:49:54Yeah, that's the way he likes
00:49:56it though.
00:49:56He's not like Michael.
00:49:57He's not all precision and
00:49:59extra margin of error at every
00:50:01corner.
00:50:02This guy is a true Latin.
00:50:04In the mold of Ayrton Senna.
00:50:07This looks like we're going to
00:50:08have that desperate front row
00:50:09of Montoya and Schumacher.
00:50:11There it is.
00:50:12And we will.
00:50:13It is not good for pole,
00:50:15but it is P2.
00:50:17And the German Schumacher fans
00:50:20have their man on pole.
00:50:22There's Mario Illion,
00:50:23who builds the Mercedes-Benz V10s.
00:50:27So Michael Schumacher will
00:50:30start alongside one Pablo Montoya
00:50:34on row one.
00:50:35It'll be Button and Raikkonen
00:50:36on row two.
00:50:37Coulthard and Alonso on row three.
00:50:39And that's a key.
00:50:40A key number for Michael Schumacher.
00:50:42That will be his 61st pole.
00:50:45Only four shy now.
00:50:46There at the center.
00:50:47And his first pole since the
00:50:49European Grand Prix.
00:50:50Also on German soil, of course.
00:50:56Well, a lot of very happy people here.
00:50:58The Mercedes people must be happier
00:51:00with the way their car's going.
00:51:01Obviously, the BMW people
00:51:03are pretty happy with the front row.
00:51:04And of course, the rest of the crowd
00:51:05extremely happy that Michael Schumacher
00:51:07is on the pole.
00:51:08Well, here is a number.
00:51:10This front row start for Michael Schumacher
00:51:12will be his 100th.
00:51:16100 starts, either P1 or P2,
00:51:19in his career.
00:51:21Oh, boy, oh, boy.
00:51:22I can remember when getting to 100 starts
00:51:25in your career was a big deal.
00:51:27Michael started from the front row
00:51:29that many times.
00:51:29206 starts, so half of his starts
00:51:32have been from the front row.
00:51:33That is an astounding statistic.
00:51:36Well, it's going to make for
00:51:37a very interesting opening to the race,
00:51:40isn't it, tomorrow?
00:51:41Michael Schumacher and Montoya.
00:51:42Certainly no love lost between those two
00:51:45very skilled racing drivers,
00:51:47both with different techniques
00:51:49and skills to offer.
00:51:50And both, basically, with nothing to lose.
00:51:53Michael, the runaway leader
00:51:54for the championship.
00:51:55Montoya, no hope for the championship.
00:51:58And if Ferrari can sweep 1-2 this weekend,
00:52:02as Michael accepts congratulations
00:52:03around the garage,
00:52:06Ferrari, with a 1-2 finish this weekend,
00:52:08will clinch the Constructors' title
00:52:11for 2004.
00:52:13I tell you what, that Turn 1
00:52:15is going to be one corner tomorrow.
00:52:18I mean, Schumacher-Montoya
00:52:20alongside each other,
00:52:21that fast corner, that girl
00:52:22crossing herself there.
00:52:23Looking for help wherever you can find it.
00:52:28Still a great performance for Montoya,
00:52:32who said this weekend that
00:52:33he suspects the team is no longer
00:52:36giving him access to the latest technology,
00:52:38at least in terms of what they're thinking
00:52:39for next year's car.
00:52:41He has but one more test
00:52:43for the BMW Williams team
00:52:45coming up at Monza.
00:52:48But look at the road he has to use
00:52:50to get that time
00:52:51where Michael Schumacher
00:52:52barely got it off the blacktop
00:52:53onto the hatching,
00:52:54let alone beyond that
00:52:55onto the green top.
00:52:57Second call in his home Grand Prix
00:52:59for Michael Schumacher.
00:53:00He'll be going over to wave
00:53:01to the grandstands, I'm sure.
00:53:03There he is.
00:53:08Oh, for a guy that's suffering with flu,
00:53:10that's not a bad performance.
00:53:12Absolutely.
00:53:13Michael under the weather,
00:53:14he got out of the car
00:53:15after yesterday morning's practice
00:53:16and was hacking away like a smoker.
00:53:18Yeah, he's obviously not
00:53:20at the best of his peak condition
00:53:22at the moment.
00:53:22He's obviously got a nasty cold
00:53:24or flu and...
00:53:25But I mean, boy, oh boy,
00:53:27what an incredible career he's had.
00:53:28Starting to look...
00:53:29As he looked over the crowd there,
00:53:31just a slight...
00:53:32You can see the wear and tears
00:53:33taking place.
00:53:34When you see those decade shows
00:53:35we're in the middle of doing now,
00:53:36how young he looked in 94.
00:53:38Do you notice that tattoo
00:53:39on the inside of his right wrist?
00:53:41I wouldn't know
00:53:42what the Hindu god of luck,
00:53:43Ganesha, looks like,
00:53:44but supposedly he has that tattoo
00:53:47on his body somewhere.
00:53:49And of course, he carries the amulet,
00:53:51the lucky charm given to him
00:53:52by his wife, Corinna,
00:53:53as John taught.
00:53:55And Michael's manager,
00:53:57Willie Weber,
00:53:58himself a multi-millionaire
00:54:00off the earnings he makes
00:54:01from Michael and brother Ralph.
00:54:03Michael is quite the superstitious fellow.
00:54:06But hey, whatever works.
00:54:08Front row start number 100
00:54:10and total 61
00:54:12for Michael Schumacher.
00:54:25Welcome back to the Hockenheim Ring.
00:54:27Moments ago,
00:54:28this was Michael Schumacher
00:54:29saluting his fans.
00:54:31Notably, more buff Michael Schumacher
00:54:33who appears to have changed
00:54:34his legendary fitness training regimen
00:54:36to add a little muscle.
00:54:39crowd settling in for the Formula 3000 race
00:54:41where runaway championship leader
00:54:43Vian Antonio Luzzi
00:54:44will start from pole.
00:54:45But right now,
00:54:46let's go to Peter Windsor
00:54:47in the interview room.
00:54:50Congratulations to the fastest three
00:54:52qualifiers for the Mobile One
00:54:53Grand Prix of Germany
00:54:54to Jenson Button third
00:54:56for Lucky Strike BAR Honda
00:54:58to Juan Pablo Montoya
00:54:59second quickest
00:55:00for BMW Williams
00:55:01and to Michael Schumacher
00:55:03on the pole
00:55:03for Scuderia Ferrari Marlborough.
00:55:06Michael, more history today.
00:55:07You've become the first driver ever
00:55:08in 100 races
00:55:09to start from the front row of the grid
00:55:11and of course,
00:55:11it is your first pole
00:55:13since Nürburgring
00:55:14in front of your home crowd.
00:55:16Yeah, it's interesting.
00:55:19Seems to be the German Grand Prix
00:55:20in a way.
00:55:21But anyway,
00:55:22it's a nice one.
00:55:23It's the right time
00:55:24to do it
00:55:25in front of the home crowd,
00:55:27no doubt.
00:55:28And I think with
00:55:30the way things go for us
00:55:31this weekend,
00:55:32that's very promising for us.
00:55:34What were your thoughts
00:55:35after pre-qualifying?
00:55:37You were midfield there
00:55:38and you gained
00:55:390.7 of a second
00:55:41actually on that qualifying lap.
00:55:42Yeah, honestly,
00:55:43as usual,
00:55:45I'm the first one out
00:55:46which I shouldn't complain about
00:55:48because there's a good reason for.
00:55:50But being the circuit sweeper
00:55:52and then not knowing
00:55:53exactly what is the grip
00:55:54so you can't always put it
00:55:56onto the edge
00:55:58until you find out
00:55:59for the first couple of corners
00:56:00where you are.
00:56:02It didn't really then work out
00:56:04but it was still reasonable
00:56:06and being in the midfield
00:56:08as starting the second session
00:56:09wasn't too much of a problem for me
00:56:12because the circuit
00:56:12seemed to have settled in
00:56:14after a while
00:56:14and then didn't pick up anymore.
00:56:17How was the lap?
00:56:18You looked very, very good
00:56:19on sectors two and three.
00:56:20Yeah, sector two and three
00:56:23I just got perfectly together.
00:56:25Sector one
00:56:27probably not 100%
00:56:28but I think all of us
00:56:29afterwards can say
00:56:30we lost here and there
00:56:32a little bit of time.
00:56:34Congratulations.
00:56:35Juan Pablo,
00:56:36resurgence for BMW Williams
00:56:38and on the front row
00:56:38for the first time since Spain.
00:56:40Yeah, I think it's nice
00:56:42to be back in the front.
00:56:43You know, the car
00:56:44you know, I think Williams
00:56:45and BMW
00:56:46have done a really good job
00:56:47over the last few races
00:56:49and I think since Magna Core
00:56:50it's just a couple new things
00:56:52and you know,
00:56:53it's good to see the team
00:56:54back in good shape.
00:56:57It's a shame
00:56:58we couldn't go in a little bit
00:56:58you know,
00:56:59couldn't go in any faster
00:57:00and I think we got
00:57:01a very good race car.
00:57:02We have to wait
00:57:02and see how
00:57:03you know,
00:57:04how it pans out tomorrow.
00:57:06You're very, very close
00:57:07for the pole there.
00:57:07Were you thinking
00:57:08in terms of the pole?
00:57:10Yeah, a little bit.
00:57:12I went into the grass
00:57:13in turn seven,
00:57:15bar turn seven
00:57:15going just the corner
00:57:16before the stadium
00:57:17the right hander
00:57:18put the car on the grass
00:57:19had a big snap there
00:57:20just got a bit of speed
00:57:21down that straight
00:57:22and I thought
00:57:22I just finished it up.
00:57:25Congratulations to you too.
00:57:27Jensen,
00:57:28a bit of a bittersweet day
00:57:29obviously quick
00:57:29but the problem yesterday
00:57:31with the car
00:57:31means you're going to have
00:57:32to start 10 positions
00:57:33further back.
00:57:34It is, you know
00:57:35it's difficult
00:57:36because we've been
00:57:37very strong here
00:57:39in long runs.
00:57:40It's more our one lap
00:57:43pace that we've had
00:57:44to work on.
00:57:44So it's disappointing
00:57:46that we're going back
00:57:47to 13th on the grid.
00:57:49You know,
00:57:50these things happen.
00:57:50I've been very lucky
00:57:52in the races
00:57:53not to have any failures
00:57:54so, you know,
00:57:56we make mistakes
00:57:57and the team
00:57:57makes mistakes sometimes.
00:57:59As it happens,
00:58:00actually 13th
00:58:00is your highest ever
00:58:01qualifying position
00:58:02for the German Grand Prix
00:58:03and you've scored points
00:58:04in three out of four
00:58:04of those races.
00:58:05True,
00:58:06I've had a pretty good run
00:58:07here in the past
00:58:09in cars that really
00:58:10haven't been good enough
00:58:12to be in,
00:58:13you know,
00:58:13in the top five
00:58:13or six places.
00:58:14So it's,
00:58:15there's a good chance
00:58:16we can get points here
00:58:17and that is our aim
00:58:18to get both cars
00:58:19into points
00:58:19and hopefully not just
00:58:21one or two points.
00:58:22You know,
00:58:22we've got a very good
00:58:23race pace.
00:58:24I'm looking forward
00:58:24to the race,
00:58:25it'll be very exciting.
00:58:27Michael,
00:58:27how do you see the race
00:58:28going?
00:58:29It looks to be
00:58:29very, very close now.
00:58:31Well,
00:58:31first of all,
00:58:32I guess it's going
00:58:32to be nice
00:58:33and warm tomorrow.
00:58:34They predicted
00:58:35quite high temperatures
00:58:36and nice and sunny.
00:58:38So it's going
00:58:39to be good
00:58:39for the spectators
00:58:40to have a nice
00:58:43afternoon
00:58:43and hopefully
00:58:44we can put the show
00:58:45up for them
00:58:46to enjoy it.
00:58:48Michael Schumacher
00:58:49definitely sounds
00:58:50like he's feeling
00:58:51the effects
00:58:51of that flu bug.
00:58:53But taking pole
00:58:54remedies a lot
00:58:56of problems.
00:58:56We'll be back
00:58:57for the Hockenheim Ring.
00:59:03Be sure to join us
00:59:04tomorrow for live
00:59:05Speed Channel coverage
00:59:06of round 12
00:59:07of the 2004
00:59:08Formula One season,
00:59:09the German Grand Prix
00:59:10from Hockenheim.
00:59:11It all begins
00:59:12at 7.30 a.m.
00:59:13Eastern Time
00:59:14with the Acura
00:59:15Free Race Show
00:59:15featuring Peter
00:59:16Windsor in the paddock
00:59:17at Hockenheim.
00:59:18They'll be talking
00:59:19about the proposed
00:59:20new rules
00:59:20to change the formula
00:59:21of Formula One
00:59:22and the new super helmets
00:59:24the drivers
00:59:24are required to wear.
00:59:26There's not been
00:59:26a lot of talk
00:59:26about that,
00:59:27so check it out
00:59:28beginning at 7.30
00:59:29tomorrow.
00:59:30Now let's look back
00:59:30to last year's
00:59:31German Grand Prix.
00:59:34Juan Pablo Montoya
00:59:35started the race
00:59:35on pole in the Williams,
00:59:37but watch the left
00:59:38side of your screen.
00:59:38Teammate Ralph Schumacher
00:59:40makes it interesting.
00:59:41He goes left to right
00:59:42for turn one,
00:59:42touches wheels
00:59:43with Rubens Bartichello.
00:59:44Kimi Raikkonen
00:59:45gets hung out
00:59:45on the outside.
00:59:46There's contact
00:59:47and Raikkonen
00:59:48hits the tires hard.
00:59:49Watch the replay.
00:59:50Ralph Schumacher
00:59:51moving from left to right.
00:59:52Pitches Barrichello
00:59:53and a classic pitch there
00:59:54for old Raikkonen
00:59:55just about going
00:59:55on the grass anyway.
00:59:56Takes a couple of wheels
00:59:57off already
00:59:58and this removes
00:59:59the rest of them.
01:00:00Nearly turned him
01:00:01over there.
01:00:02So a pretty desperate
01:00:03first lap crash.
01:00:04I don't think
01:00:04we'd have that this year.
01:00:05They moved those tires
01:00:06way back.
01:00:06So Raikkonen was out.
01:00:08Ralph Schumacher
01:00:10was out.
01:00:10Basically it was his fault
01:00:11unfortunately.
01:00:13Barrichello also out
01:00:14and he was really
01:00:15at no fault
01:00:15and the safety car
01:00:16was out.
01:00:17They decided
01:00:17no red flag.
01:00:19Yes however
01:00:20once the race was back
01:00:22underway
01:00:22and the green race
01:00:23and great race in action
01:00:24Michael Schumacher
01:00:25running in third
01:00:26makes the move
01:00:27on Jarno Trulli.
01:00:29Schumacher running
01:00:29very wide.
01:00:30He doesn't lift
01:00:31and gets the move
01:00:32on Jarno Trulli's Renault
01:00:34much to the delight
01:00:35of Scuderia Ferrari's
01:00:37mechanics right there.
01:00:40Well done that man.
01:00:41A little bit later
01:00:42on lap 60
01:00:42Davey Coutard
01:00:43tries to say
01:00:44move on Trulli.
01:00:45Goes wide
01:00:45but this time
01:00:47Trulli hangs on.
01:00:49Saves the position
01:00:50it wouldn't last long.
01:00:52Two more corners.
01:00:54Trulli makes a mistake
01:00:55and DC takes third spot.
01:00:57And it looked like
01:00:57Trulli would have to
01:00:58settle for fourth
01:00:59until lap 63.
01:01:00Michael Schumacher
01:01:01flattened the left rear tire.
01:01:03That puncture
01:01:03and subsequent pit stop
01:01:04would drop Michael
01:01:05all the way down to seven.
01:01:07Up front it was
01:01:07the dominant run
01:01:08for Juan Pablo Montoya
01:01:10who led flag to flag
01:01:11for his third career victory.
01:01:13Meanwhile the exhausted
01:01:15Jarno Trulli
01:01:15suffering from the flu
01:01:16all weekend
01:01:17got his second career podium
01:01:18and Michael Schumacher's
01:01:20troubled day
01:01:21cut his championship lead
01:01:22to just six points
01:01:23as Montoya
01:01:25completed a run
01:01:26of 50 points
01:01:27in his last six starts.
01:01:30I'm sure tomorrow
01:01:31will be every bit
01:01:32as dramatic
01:01:33from the Hockenheim Ring
01:01:34so be sure you're with us
01:01:35beginning at 7.30 Eastern.
01:01:41Welcome back to the Hockenheim Ring
01:01:43qualifying is now complete
01:01:45for the German Grand Prix
01:01:46coming up Sunday
01:01:47here on Speed Channel
01:01:48Michael Schumacher
01:01:49has his 61st career pole
01:01:51his 100th career
01:01:53front row start
01:01:54David Hobbs
01:01:55and Steve Matchett
01:01:56this is how he did it.
01:01:58Well here we see him
01:01:58a nice close up
01:02:00of his napper
01:02:01as he comes down
01:02:01and there's one of those
01:02:02new helmets
01:02:02you were talking about
01:02:03just about to go
01:02:05across the stripe
01:02:07to commence his fast lap
01:02:08this is that turn one
01:02:09where hopefully
01:02:10we don't see too much
01:02:11action tomorrow
01:02:12as you can see
01:02:12a very fast turn
01:02:14down to turn three
01:02:15in the old days
01:02:15he's got to use to go
01:02:17careering straight up
01:02:18into the woods there
01:02:19look at a brake bias adjustment
01:02:20between turns one and two
01:02:21push the brake bias forward
01:02:23a little bit
01:02:25for the car
01:02:25look at the driver's hands again
01:02:27that's the sign right there
01:02:29brake bias adjustment
01:02:29again
01:02:30this is Michael Schumacher
01:02:31and Ferrari
01:02:32all the way around
01:02:33every corner
01:02:34has to be taken
01:02:35under its own merit
01:02:35and this is turn six
01:02:37the tightest corner here
01:02:38out braking opportunities
01:02:39206 miles an hour
01:02:40into there
01:02:40showing a beautiful
01:02:41balance of downforce
01:02:43and power
01:02:44from that Ferrari engine
01:02:45look at this
01:02:46real quick fast
01:02:47right hand sweep
01:02:47for turn nine here
01:02:48you've got to get
01:02:49this kerb just right
01:02:50slash across the kerb
01:02:51try and maintain speed
01:02:52especially out of this
01:02:53turn here
01:02:54turn 11
01:02:55good long run
01:02:56down to turn 12
01:02:57as they go into the stadium
01:02:58which is where
01:02:59most of the corners
01:03:00all come
01:03:01kind of pile up
01:03:02on each other
01:03:02now this is
01:03:03looking good
01:03:03look at the lack
01:03:04of steering input
01:03:05too
01:03:05now traction power
01:03:07traction power
01:03:08all the way around
01:03:08this old stadium section
01:03:10and this is where
01:03:11it works so well
01:03:11as well
01:03:12you know
01:03:12it's basically everywhere
01:03:13the chassis
01:03:14and the track
01:03:14and the driver
01:03:15in perfect harmony
01:03:15and within a tad
01:03:17as he crossed the line
01:03:18within a tad
01:03:19of 140 mile an hour
