00:07Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the musical roles that test young performers with
00:13a mix of vocal power, emotional depth, athleticism, and charisma.
00:27Number 20, Gustav, Love Never Dies. Now this is an absolute vocal beast disguised as an innocent kid. If you
00:35think Andrew Lloyd Webber's scores are a walk in the park, think again.
00:51This character requires a pristine, angelic treble voice that can effortlessly float over a massive swelling orchestra without missing a
00:59beat.
00:59But pure pitch isn't even half the battle. These young performers shoulder an intense emotional arc, acting as the dramatic
01:06linchpin of a surprisingly dark plot.
01:09Things you know you can't confess, things you thirst for nonetheless.
01:19They share the stage with industry heavyweights while holding their own through complex psychological twists, all while keeping that gorgeous
01:26tone crystal clear.
01:27It's an impressive display of vocal control and stage presence that leaves audiences spellbound.
01:32Ms. Sherry, I can't swim! I was my mother.
01:39Number 19, Winnie Foster, Tuck Everlasting.
01:43Playing Winnie is basically theatrical endurance at its most demanding, because this kid is basically never offstage.
01:51Today is the day, I've been waiting forever. Today is the day, the fair comes to me.
01:59She anchors the entire narrative from start to finish, driving the plot forward through a folk-infused, soaring score that
02:07demands serious vocal agility.
02:09But what really makes this role a killer is the emotional heavy lifting.
02:13Turns down a scene, that good girl running faster, drinks go wild after class.
02:22Winnie isn't just singing cute kid tunes, she is wrestling with weighty themes of mortality, growing up, and making choices
02:29that will change her life forever.
02:31It takes a wildly grounded young actor to make that existential journey feel completely authentic eight times a week, while
02:37keeping their voice fresh and healthy.
02:39That is a huge ask for any performer.
02:42Should I, will I drink, or is it everlasting?
02:52Number 18, Jane and Michael, Mary Poppins.
02:56Sure, audiences remember the magical umbrella and the spoonful of sugar, but these two kids are pretty much on stage
03:02the whole time.
03:03The role is so humongous and crazy. We're in, like, the whole show, really. Like, we really have no downtime
03:10except for intermission.
03:12The challenge here isn't just about tight, synchronized harmonies, but the sheer physical coordination required.
03:18R-H-E-I-L
03:27Jane and Michael have to switch on a dime from bratty, unruly handfuls into sweet, wide-eyed believers, all while
03:35executing crisp choreography, keeping up with lightning-fast scene changes, and dealing with high-flying stage magic.
03:41They also need impeccable comedic timing, and boundless energy, even when they're exhausted.
03:47Throw in the pressure of performing alongside Mary Poppins herself, and being a bank sibling is definitely no jolly holiday
03:54in the park.
03:56Anything can have fun

04:26In every way
04:28I guarantee
04:29Practically perfect
04:31We hope you'll stay
04:33We'll follow me
04:34Number 17.
04:37Les Jacobs
04:37Newsies
04:38Les is one of those roles that seems like comic relief, until you realize how much is riding on it.
04:44How old are you, kid?
04:45I'm 10.
04:47Almost.
04:48Well, if anybody asks, you're 7.
04:50Younger sells more papes
04:52He has to keep up with a cast of high-energy performers, while still feeling younger, smaller, and totally fearless.
04:59That's not easy.
05:00The actor needs impeccable timing, a strong sense of rhythm, and the confidence to make every line hit, without getting
05:07swallowed by the bigger ensemble around him.
05:10Give it here!
05:14Buy a paper, my poor orphan boy?
05:19Oh, you dear thing, of course I'll take a newspaper.
05:22Les also has to feel natural in a show packed with athletic choreography and rapid-fire dialogue, so he needs
05:29both agility and charm.
05:31If he's too broad, he becomes a cartoon, too subtle, and the role disappears.
05:36The best Les is funny, fast, and completely alive.
05:39So just watch what happens, we're back, and I've got a date!
05:56Let's look at the stellar young ensemble from the pop-rock musical 13.
06:10Jason Robert Brown wrote this score, and if you know his work, you know he doesn't code-switch for younger
06:16performers.
06:17This music is fiercely unforgiving, packed with syncopated rhythms, massive belt notes, and tricky harmonies that would trip up plenty
06:25of adult pros.
06:26A little more homework, we all have!
06:31A little more homework to do!
06:37Toss in a group of kids whose vocal cords might literally be changing mid-run, and you have vocal gymnastics
06:43on hard mode.
06:44Add relentless, high-energy choreography, and the hyper-specific, cringeworthy angst of middle school politics,
06:51and you get roles that demand absolute fearlessness and powerhouse talent.
06:55These kids do not get an easy ride.
06:57I see a brand new you
07:00I see a brand new you
07:09Playing younger versions of legends is difficult because the actor has to suggest greatness before the audience has even seen
07:17it bloom.
07:25In a show like Motown, these young roles need charisma, vocal strength, and individuality strong enough to hint at the
07:32icons they'll become.
07:34But they can't turn into impersonations. That's the balancing act.
07:37Oh baby, give me one more tip
07:42Won't you please let me
07:45Let me know how to
07:46The performers need to sound like kids, not many tribute acts, while still capturing the spirit of historical figures audiences
07:53already know well.
07:55That takes confidence, musicality, and smart characterization.
07:59The roles also carry extra pressure because they're tied to real-life names with huge cultural significance.
08:05If it's right, though, it's electric.
08:07No. 14. Tina Denmark
08:20Ruthless
08:21Tina Denmark is essentially a pint-sized sociopath with a Broadway belt.
08:33Playing Tina is like asking a kid to channel the bad seed, while belting out a 110-volt Broadway showstopper.
08:40This role demands delicious villainy, requiring a young performer to play a malicious monster hell-bent on showbiz stardom.
08:47I like that it's really challenging because it's not like any other character we've all played.
08:52The comedic timing has to be precise enough for the dark satire to really sing, while the vocal delivery needs
08:58to be aggressive, bold, and entirely unhinged.
09:02You have to pivot on a dime from angelic, wide-eyed innocence to cutthroat ambition without missing a comedic beat.
09:09It makes Tina a dream role for a total triple threat powerhouse with a wonderfully wicked streak.
09:14I'll do anything to play this poem
09:20No. 13. Tobias Rag
09:24Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street
09:27Tobias is one of musical theater's most psychologically complex characters, requiring a young actor to trace a heartbreaking path from
09:35sweet, simple-minded devotion to utter tragic madness.
09:46Sondheim's score is notoriously mathematical, filled with tricky intervals, dissonant harmonies, and overlapping vocal lines that demand absolute pitch precision.
09:56On top of that musical minefield, Tobias has to deliver a harrowing, emotionally raw performance as he slowly realizes the
10:03horrific reality unfolding in the pie shop downstairs.
10:06You who eat pies, Mrs. Lovett's meat pies, conjure up the treat pies used to be.
10:14There's a delicate mix of fragile, youthful innocence and rising panic, with expressive character singing and haunting leitmotifs like Not
10:22While I'm Around.
10:23It's a devastating dramatic journey, and a seriously demanding role for any performer.
10:29Nothing can harm you Not While I'm Around
10:38No. 12. Mary Lennox, the Secret Garden
10:41Mary is a deeply layered protagonist who starts the show as a bitter, sour, and intensely grieving child, slowly blossoming
10:49alongside the moor around her.
10:51I need a place where I can go Where I can whisper what I know Where I can whisper who
11:02I like
11:03Lucy Simon's gorgeous, sweeping score is practically operatic, demanding sophisticated breath control, soaring high notes, and intense emotional vulnerability.
11:12It is a complex, soprano-leaning score that requires dramatic, operatic storytelling, masked behind a child's perspective.
11:20Will it grow? It will. Then have no doubt about it, we'll have the grandest garden ever seen.
11:30Mary is on stage for nearly the entire duration of an emotionally heavy, complex plot, carrying massive narrative weight and
11:38transforming from an isolated outsider into a beacon of hope.
11:42It is a stunning, exhausting role that requires a young artist with wisdom far beyond their years.
11:48No. 11. Jason, falsettos
11:58Playing Jason is the ultimate test of a young actor's mettle because William Finn's score is a rapid-fire labyrinth
12:05of syncopated rhythms, tricky comic patter, and soaring emotional melodies.
12:09And I'm left with them, I'll be inviting, selecting girls for one's bar mitzvah, God. That's the miracle of Judaism.
12:20But the real challenge lies in the sheer emotional maturity required.
12:24Jason is caught in the crossfire of a deeply messy, unconventional family navigating divorce, shifting loyalties, and the looming shadow
12:32of the early AIDS crisis.
12:34I think chess is the most beautiful thing, not love.
12:47He must master Finn's distinct, rhythmically challenging score, all while anchoring the emotional heart of a deeply dysfunctional, loving family
12:55with incredible comedic timing and devastating dramatic weight.
12:59He has to balance cynical wit with heartbreaking vulnerability, carrying the show's emotional core through a bar mitzvah and beyond.
13:33Fiddler on the roof
13:34She might be the oldest entry on our list, but she's the middle of Tevye's five children.
13:39When Hava hasn't got her head in a book, she's dreaming of the man Yenta might bring her.
13:46Matchmaker, matchmaker, I'll bring the veil. You bring the groom, slender and pale.
13:54When we first meet her, she's shy and bookish, but as she establishes her place in the world, she grows
13:59into a defiant young woman who turns her back on tradition for love.
14:02The world is changing, Papa!
14:05No, Hava. No. Some things do not change for us.
14:12It's an emotionally challenging role for any young actress, especially when she has to make a difficult choice between her
14:18past and her future.
14:20Matchmaker, matchmaker, you know that I'm still very young. Please, take your time.
14:27Number 9. Young Simba and Nala, The Lion King.
14:31Simba and Nala are certainly lively cubs, and the actors who fill their paws need to have boundless energy to
14:37keep up.
14:37A particularly memorable moment, and a fan favorite, is the spectacular staging of I Just Can't Wait To Be King.
14:44Not only do the young stars take lead vocals, but they also have to climb on and off of props,
14:50as well as keep up with the choreography.
14:52Oh, I just can't wait to be king!
15:03Young Simba is exceptionally energetic and may even throw a few tricks and flips into the mix, and we're breathless
15:09just watching them.
15:10Free to do it on my way!
15:14Number 8. Small Allison, Fun Home.
15:24This show is based on the graphic novel by Allison Bechdel and serves as her memoirs, focusing on her journey
15:30of discovering her sexuality.
15:33Ten-year-old Allison is constantly trying to defy expectations inflicted upon her by her father, who is not out,
15:39and with whom she has a turbulent relationship.
15:41We were exactly alike.
15:44Put it back in. Keeps the hair out of your eyes.
15:48So what a crew cut.
15:49And we were nothing alike.
15:52Small Allison has a lot of serious issues to deal with throughout the show, and needs a strong voice to
15:57express them.
15:58This musical was called Daring for the way it tackles sexuality, yet Small Allison joins her older counterparts in trailblazing
16:05the way for lesbian protagonists on stage.
16:07You're swagger and you're bearing and just right clothes.
16:13You're wearing your short hair and your dungarees and your lace-up boots.
16:20Number 7. The kids from School of Rock. School of Rock.
16:24If you haven't seen the film starring Jack Black and a host of incredibly talented kids, where have you been?
16:29Do you remember this thing I taught you a minute ago?
16:35Yes! Yes! Boom! Alright! Let's go!
16:40A fake teacher commandeers a class of high achievers to create a band to get back at the group that
16:45kicked him out.
16:46This show has some pretty big belters, such as If Only You Would Listen.
16:50Joy and anger and pride. If only you would listen.
16:57And incredibly energetic choreography like in Stick It to the Man.
17:00Live your life to someone else's plan! Stick it to the man!
17:05If you're feeling angry, then put some of that into your music sack!
17:09These kids are a quadruple threat, as well as the usual musical theatre hat trick.
17:13They also play their own instruments live every single night.
17:18Number 6. Artful Dodger. Oliver.
17:20A Cockney accent isn't always easy to pull off. Just ask Dick Van Dyke.
17:26Isn't the flesh and at your service?
17:28So, if you're planning on filling Dodger's shoes, maybe look elsewhere for that authentic East London inspiration.
17:34I'd do anything for you, dear. Anything for you mean everything to me.
17:45As the ringleader of Fagin's band of orphans, he has the task of keeping an eye on everyone,
17:50and is often the middleman between the adults and kids.
17:53Also, who doesn't love a bit of Consider Yourself?
17:56Consider Yourself, Atom!
18:00Consider Yourself, one of the families.
18:03We've taken to you so strong!
18:06It's a hugely iconic song in the musical theatre world led by Dodger.
18:10And if that's not enough, it comes with a high energy chunk of choreography too.
18:16Number 5. Baby June. Gypsy.
18:18Hello everybody! My name is June. What's yours?
18:29Let me entertain you!
18:31June? She might not get much stage time, but she certainly leaves a huge impact.
18:36We see June during a time where she enjoyed performing, with her chorus of newspaper boys in tow.
18:49She's a Shirley Temple style character and looks and acts like a pageant kid with more energy than you can
18:54possibly imagine.
18:56She shows off her performance abilities and changes up her dance style, all while keeping a huge smile on her
19:01face.
19:02She's so over the top in her performance, that it would be impossible to not spot her from miles away.
19:08So let me entertain you! And we'll have a real good time to serve!
19:15Number 4. Annie. Annie.
19:27This is maybe the most iconic role for a theatre kid.
19:30But considering the show revolves around her, it's one of the most demanding too.
19:35Annie is a red-headed orphan whose life turns around when she's chosen to stay with billionaire Daddy Warbucks as
19:40part of a PR stunt.
19:42Annie is a scene-stealer, whether she's belting out tomorrow or dancing her socks off to It's the Hard Knock
19:48Life.
19:49Full of summer life, not tomorrow life.
19:53It's that loss we never see.
19:55She's cheeky, lively, tough, and usually teaches the adults a thing or two from her optimistic, innocent view of the
20:02world.
20:03So maybe now this peers, the last one of it's blind.
20:13Number 3. Gavroche. Les Miserables.
20:16No one seems to believe more in the revolution than Gavroche.
20:20And despite being a kid, he's there on the front lines throughout the show.
20:23He's tasked with the responsibility of giving the audience the lowdown on the key characters in the show when we
20:29first meet him during Look Down.
20:30How do you do? My name's Gavroche. These are my people. Here's my patch.
20:36Not much to look at. Nothing posh. Nothing that you call up to scratch.
20:41That's not forgetting his highly underrated solo Little People, which gets a reprise twice throughout his performance.
20:47And little people know when little people fight. We may look easy thinking, but we've got some fight.
20:55And we defy anyone to watch his final scene without shedding a tear as Gavroche becomes one of the first
21:00casualties of the revolution.
21:02When the pop goes.
21:08Number 2. Matilda Wormwood. Matilda the Musical.
21:12Cause even if you're little you can do a lot of you.
21:16Mustn't add a little thing like little stalk you.
21:19Even if you're little you can do a lot Matilda sings. And she would know.
21:23It's a huge role both literally and also in the responsibility of bringing such a loved character to life.
21:29Just because I find myself in this story. Doesn't mean that everything is written for me.
21:37Not only does Matilda have some pretty big tunes to belt out.
21:40But the show's choreography is so precise and unique that it's become iconic over the years.
21:45It comes as no surprise that there are usually 4 Matildas in rotation as it's a very demanding role.
21:51But each Matilda always adds her own special charm to the character.
21:54And it is quiet. And I am warm.
22:05Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
22:09Young Patrick. Mame. A balance of posh eccentricity, orphan vulnerability and rapid emotional shifts.
22:16Simply travel a new highway. Dance to a new rhythm. Whistle a new love song. Toast with a new vintage.
22:26Open a new window.
22:28Mike TV. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Demands chaotic bratty energy paired with dynamic dance skills.
22:35Bad. Bad. Futuristic rodeo. See Captain Knuckle Duster. Hang him on high. Take your hard drive. Boot him up. For
22:42a cyber shoot him up. This is the life now done.
22:45Young Simon. Kinky boots. Requires fearless drag confidence in the making and vocal agility.
22:52Just like I'm dancing across the high wire. Or bravely soaring off into the blue.
23:02Lil Inez. Hairspray. She radiates an effortless magnetism that commands the entire room the moment she walks on stage.
23:09I've got a covering up on my pride. So give me five on the electric side.
23:16I've got a new way of moving and I've got my own voice. So I can myself push out with
23:22you.
23:22Ralphie Parker. A Christmas Story the musical. The driving force who constantly narrates, dances high energy tap, acts comedically and
23:31has strong vocals.
23:32Would you really need to be a cowboy? Fearless. Keeping bandits trembling on the run.
23:44Are you a musician, singer, producer or band? Sound Mojo is committing $50,000 to turn our demos into real

24:11Number 1. Billy Elliot. Billy Elliot the Musical.
24:22If you've seen this show, then it will come as no surprise that Billy Elliot takes our top spot.
24:28Billy realizes he loves ballet, but that comes with its own trouble as it's not something a northern lad is
24:34expected to do.
24:35He's an incredible dancer, super flexible and athletic, which is best exemplified through the stunningly choreographed number electricity.
24:49Billy's best friend Michael is also keeping a secret, but together they learn about the value of being able to
24:55express yourself through a rather demanding routine.
24:58That's an absolute joy to watch.
25:00If you wanna be a dancing dance. If you wanna be a might of mine. If you want to dress
25:09like somebody else. Fine. Fine. Let's get these sussies dancing.
25:15Which child actor role never fails to blow you away? Let us know in the comments.
