00:00The Hardee's $6 burger. Put one in your mouth before seeing Spider-Man.
00:04Welcome to Ms. Mojo. And today, we're counting down our picks for the most iconic fast food
00:10items with Y2K-era aura. 51 cubic inches of perfection. So big, we dare you to eat it alone.
00:19Number 20. Shake-Em-Up Fries, Burger King. Looking back now, it's clear the concept of
00:25this fast food product, along with the art and font on the package, was oozing with Y2K
00:31energy, as were the quirky and colorful throwback commercials that promoted it, including the
00:37one featuring The Simpsons. Now for a limited time at Burger King, you can get a wacky Simpsons
00:41talking watch for $2.39 with the purchase of any big kid's meal. Cool your jets, man. Burger King's
00:47Shake-Em Fries were fries in a bag served with a separate packet of cheese powder. The product
00:53had an interactive element, as the customer would pour the cheese powder into the bag
00:57and shake it to spread that cheesy flavor. Shake-Em-Up Fries came out in 2002, but were discontinued
01:04the following year. Still, that was all the time needed for them to become a memorable and
01:08now nostalgic fast food item.
01:11Just put your fries in the bag, add some salt and vinegar or cheese flavor, shake and eat.
01:16And once you've stopped shaking, it's time to start shivering.
01:21Number 19, McSalad Shakers, McDonald's.
01:25Sure, many fast food chains offer salads, but salads are not something we generally associate
01:31with fast food. You could buy a salad at McDonald's as far back as the 1980s. And in 2000, the
01:38chain
01:38introduced salads served in a tall, clear plastic cup with a snap-on lid. They were called McSalad
01:45Shakers.
01:46McDonald's new McSalad Shakers. Crisp salads you shake in a cup, so you get dressing from
01:50the first bite to the last. Who else could make salads fun?
01:54One of the good things about these products was how portable they were, making it easier
01:58for you to eat on the go. However, they were discontinued in 2003. McSalad Shakers may not
02:05have lasted very long, but their uniqueness and Y2K aesthetic made them a memorable piece of
02:10fast food history.
02:18Number 18, The Insider Pizza, Pizza Hut.
02:23Marketed as a pizza inside a pizza, the Insider Pizza was so Y2K. In fact, Pizza Hut introduced
02:30it in the year 2000. The Insider Pizza had extra cheese and extra dough, and it took the
02:36idea of a stuffed pizza to another level. There's layers to this.
02:40It's one thin crust piled with six cheeses, then sealed with another thin crust and even
02:45more cheese. Oh yeah! So how do we get it all in? Hey, we're Pizza Hut. We put cheese
02:50in places you've never dreamed of.
02:52Seriously though, if you're a cheese lover, this may have caught your interest, because
02:56it contained six types of cheese. The Insider Pizza didn't stick around all that long, but
03:02it sure was a bold and interesting concept that's now a nostalgic slice of Y2K fast food
03:08lore.
03:08Are you hungry for more pop culture content? Or would you like to take some trips down memory
03:13lane? Ms. Mojo's 24-7 livestream has you covered. All you have to do is scan the QR code on
03:19screen.
03:20Any questions?
03:21Coach, can I eat my blocker now?
03:24Number 17, Glacier Smoothie, Dairy Queen. It's perhaps a forgotten menu item at DQ, and certainly
03:31one that didn't make the biggest cultural impact amongst Dairy Queen treats. But still,
03:36there's no denying its Y2K retro vibes. We're talking about the Glacier Smoothie. That's
03:42smoothie with a Y at the end.
03:43When a customer sends in an email to Dairy Queen, it gets forwarded to the owners of the
03:47locations.
03:48The boss got a hold of it and pinned it to the board.
03:51The Glacier Smoothie launched in the late 1990s, and originally came in three flavor options.
03:57Berry Cherry, Berry Banana, and Mocha. The frozen drink item remained available into
04:02the 2000s. While it's no longer on the menu, Dairy Queen still offers similar options like
04:08the Misty Freeze. But even that is not quite the same.
04:12The Misty Freeze is an indulgent beverage fans won't want to miss.
04:23Dairy Queen debuted the Treats-A-Pizza in 1995. This dessert pie featured a fudge cookie base,
04:30vanilla soft serve, candy bar toppings, and a chocolate or caramel drizzle.
04:34But it's not a hot eat. It's a cool treat. A treat you eat like pizza. There's fudge,
04:40chocolate crunch, soft serve, and your choice of four different combinations of toppings.
04:44While DQ had plenty of other likable dessert options at the time of the Treats-A-Pizza's debut,
04:50none were designed to be served and eaten like a slice of pizza. That's what made this thing unique.
04:55The Treats-A-Pizza remained on the menu into the 2000s, before eventually being phased out of the US
05:01market. When it returned in 2017, fans got a chance to taste some sweet nostalgia.
05:17In 2025, Taco Bell's marketing campaign for the Y2K Decades menu captured the Y2K aesthetic beautifully.
05:24And one of the stars of the show was the Caramel Apple Empanada, an iconic throwback fast-food
05:29dessert. After debuting in the early 2000s, this menu item developed a substantial cult following.
05:35The Caramel Apple Empanada was just what you'd expect,
05:39a crispy pastry pocket filled with chunks of apples and caramel sauce.
05:43In 2019, its discontinuation evoked some serious disappointment.
05:48So you've been teasing me with the Caramel Apple Empanada and you don't even have it.
05:51Taco Bell owes me a box of Caramel Apple Empanadas.
05:55Several years later, fans welcomed the return of this classic yet unique fast-food dessert,
06:01as part of Taco Bell's Decades menu promotion.
06:04Man, this takes me back to the 2000s.
06:06Number 14, The Six Dollar Burger, Carl's Jr. and Hardee's.
06:11A $6 burger obviously sounds like a more noteworthy deal now than it did back in 2001. But surprise,
06:18the $6 burger at Carl's Jr. actually cost just $3.95 when it came out in 2001. Shortly after,
06:25it also landed on menus at Carl's Jr.'s sister chain, Hardee's.
06:29The 2002 Restaurant Business Magazine award for best new burger in its class.
06:35The $6 burger, only $3.95 at Hardee's.
06:39Its name represented the idea that it was more upscale burger compared to your typical fast-food burger.
06:44The $6 burger did not lack in size, either. It featured a half-pound beef patty with cheese,
06:51mayo, ketchup, mustard, red onions, pickles, tomatoes, and lettuce on a sesame seed bun.
06:57Loaded up indeed.
06:58Happy, happy, happy, happy, happy, happy, happy, happy, happy.
07:02Wouldn't it be nice if you could just get a great $6 restaurant burger without the restaurant?
07:09Introducing the $6 burger.
07:11Number 13. Pizza Hut.
07:14Can't decide between a pizza and a calzone? You don't have to.
07:18That was essentially what Pizza Hut was selling to us with the Pizzone, which launched in 2002.
07:24Thanks to the revolutionary new Pizzone from Pizza Hut, the conflict between the two sides is over.
07:29Finito. No más.
07:30Because the Pizzone is the pizza you eat like a sandwich.
07:32It's mozzarella cheese and tantalizing toppings.
07:35Sandwich. Calzone style.
07:36It was innovative in a sense, but still had a familiar flavor profile consisting of dough,
07:42cheese, and marinara sauce. The outside, though, provided a bit of flair with Parmesan toasted crust.
07:48The Pizzone remained a menu item at Pizza Hut throughout the 2000s.
07:52While it was eventually discontinued in the early 2010s,
07:55it made a limited time comeback for the 2019 edition of March Madness.
08:00Pick up a pepperoni stuffed Pizzone.
08:02That's right, people. It's back.
08:04Now part of the $5 lineup from Pizza Hut.
08:07Official pizza of March Madness.
08:09Number 12. Chicken Selects.
08:12McDonald's.
08:13Chicken Nuggets came out in the early 1980s,
08:16but it wasn't until 1998 that McDonald's first introduced chicken of the strip variety.
08:21Their name? Chicken Selects.
08:23It doesn't come with a toy.
08:25McDonald's new Chicken Selects.
08:26Seasoned white breast strips with a choice of three new dipping sauces.
08:29For adults who've still got some kid in them.
08:32These were, of course, larger and more premium pieces of chicken
08:35that were offered with a few different choices of dipping sauces.
08:39After originally being a limited time offering,
08:42by 2004, Chicken Selects were a permanent menu item at McDonald's locations across the United States.
08:48Just over 10 years later, however, they were discontinued nationwide.
08:53Chicken tender lovers were sad to see them go.
08:56And now, McDonald's Chicken Selects remain firmly tied to 2000's fast food nostalgia.
09:01Big, gold marches.
09:02Go in there.
09:03New Big Dippers.
09:04Yummy.
09:05I'm loving it.
09:06Who's Big Dippers are they?
09:10They're mine.
09:10Number 11.
09:11Twister, KFC.
09:14Obviously, KFC is known for its fried chicken.
09:16But this item offered something different.
09:18The Twister, introduced in the late 1990s, was a wrap filled with chicken, lettuce, tomato,
09:24bacon bits, shredded cheddar cheese, and ranch dressing.
09:27No wonder the only thing more popular is the guy who makes them.
09:32Now get a Bacon Ranch Twister with wedges in this month's $2.99 to go meal.
09:36At first, it featured roast chicken and a pita bread-like wrap.
09:40Before evolving into crispy chicken and a flour tortilla.
09:44The item had a strong run throughout the 2000s, but ultimately vanished from US menus in 2014.
09:50Calls for its return were eventually answered with a limited time release in 2026.
09:55But KFC did not bring back the original 1997 recipe.
09:59However, it did mirror the crispy chicken-based Twister that rose to prominence in the early 2000s.
10:05Wrapped in a warm flour tortilla.
10:08The Twister's something else.
10:10It's a whole new way to eat chicken.
10:12The taste will blow you away!
10:14Number 10.
10:15Ocean Water, Sonic.
10:18Sonic has been known to get impressively creative in the beverage game.
10:21And they certainly have no shortage of options either.
10:25The drink that gets you at Sonic.
10:28When it comes to Y2K era vibes in particular,
10:31Ocean Water is the drink that steals the show.
10:33While it has technically been around since the 80s,
10:36it was trademarked in 1996 and only picked up steam from there.
10:41It's very good. Ocean Water is the best because it's from natural ocean water.
10:50It's great.
10:52You know it's not really from the ocean.
10:55Obviously, Sonic's Ocean Water is not literally ocean water.
10:59It's a sweet and refreshing combination of Sprite and blue coconut flavor,
11:03which gives the drink its ocean blue color,
11:05as well as a kickback and relax beachy aura that few fast food items can match.
11:11And I tell people how to live.
11:13Go watch it and drink ocean water!
11:18Number 9.
11:18Chicken Strip Basket, Dairy Queen.
11:21While Dairy Queen is of course known for, well, delicious dairy products,
11:25the franchise also has gained a solid fan base for other menu items.
11:30Exhibit A, the Chicken Strip Basket, consisting of chicken strips,
11:35Texas toast, and whatever dipping sauce floats your boat.
11:38Do I want the Chicken Strip Basket?
11:39Four golden strips of all white breast meat, Texas toast, crispy fries, and country gravy.
11:45This meal came out in 1995, and with the start of a new millennium,
11:49it really began to carve its way toward becoming a classic.
11:52Dairy Queen has crispy all white meat chicken strips, golden fries,
11:56Texas toast, and country gravy for just $3.99?
11:58I gotta get down to DQ.
12:01Right after I go to the dentist.
12:03The 2001 launch of DQ Grill and Chill Restaurants only brightened the spotlight.
12:08And while DQ's Chicken Strip Basket has stuck around to this day,
12:13there's no denying its strong Y2K connection.
12:15All right, pipe down!
12:17Now, who's up for Dairy Queen?
12:19Dairy Queen!
12:21Number eight, Popcorn Chicken, KFC.
12:25The bite-sized pieces of chicken we call Popcorn Chicken haven't been around for as long as you might think.
12:31You kids want some chicken nuggets?
12:32A phony Santa giving away mystery meat nuggets?
12:35Not today.
12:36Now, taste the holiday cheer of all-white meat KFC popcorn chicken.
12:40KFC was the franchise that introduced Popcorn Chicken to mainstream food culture in the 90s.
12:45It launched in 1992, but not as a permanent menu item.
12:49The Colonel then brought it back in 1998 for a limited time, and then again in 2001.
12:55Gene originally pitched KFC a product he called Hot Thigh, made from the thigh bone meat.
13:02That idea eventually became finger-pickin' chicken.
13:05And from there, evolved into popcorn chicken.
13:09People didn't just find out they loved KFC's Popcorn Chicken around the Y2K era.
13:14They found out they loved Popcorn Chicken in general because of KFC.
13:18That sort of fast food pioneering has to be worth bonus points.
13:22And that's why KFC Popcorn Chicken lands a spot on our list.
13:26Dear Lord, as I think of you, dressed in white with your splendid beard,
13:30I am reminded of Colonel Sanders, who is now seated at your right hand,
13:34shoveling popcorn chicken into thy mouth.
13:37Lord, could you come up with a delicious new taste treat like he did?
13:40Number 7. Sourdough Jack. Jack in the Box.
13:44While it's become a mainstay token on the Jack in the Box menu,
13:47the Sourdough Jack is rooted in Y2K history.
13:59It's essentially a patty melt spin on a traditional burger, with the beef placed on toasted sourdough
14:05bread, along with Swiss-style cheese, bacon, tomato, mayo, and ketchup.
14:10The Sourdough Jack hit the menu in 1997.
14:13Listen, if you like sourdough, I know this place that makes an excellent cheeseburger,
14:17the Sourdough Jack. Two slices of grilled sourdough. Very unique.
14:21It was obviously the bread that made it innovative and
14:24different from your run-of-the-mill fast food burger.
14:26While Jack in the Box may not be a fully mainstream national fast food chain,
14:31the Sourdough Jack definitely made its mark,
14:33with its rise taking form right around the turn of the century.
14:36Okay, just a reminder from Jack, you may call these sourdough slices toasty but not crunchy,
14:42the patty is juicy, cheese is melted, and the bacon count is four pieces. Any questions?
14:47Number 6. Spicy Chicken Sandwich. Wendy's.
14:50Chicken sandwiches have become a force in American food culture.
14:54Wendy's had an important place in the early stages of the rise.
14:58Looking for something with some zip? Well, Wendy's spicy chicken sandwich,
15:01with its fiery blend of pepper and spices, satisfies that crave.
15:04Their spicy chicken sandwich was introduced nationwide in the mid-90s,
15:09before other chains started to catch on to the allure. It comes with lettuce,
15:13tomato, mayo, and of course a blend of peppers and spices to provide the heat.
15:18We combine tried and true ingredients like cool, crisp lettuce, fresh tomatoes, and mayo,
15:24with our specially breaded spicy chicken breast that only Wendy's can perfect.
15:28While this classic is still available in our chicken sandwich-loving society,
15:32other chain's spicy chicken sammies may get more buzz.
15:35But Wendy's version really was ahead of the trend,
15:38picking up tons of fans of the late 90s and early 2000s.
15:42Now try Wendy's spicy chicken. Wendy's spicy chicken sandwich is a whole breast fillet
15:46seasoned with Dave's own blend of pepper and spices. It's one very delicious, very spicy sandwich.
15:52Number 5. Culatta. Dunkin Donuts.
15:55The name of this frozen beverage encapsulates its refreshingness.
15:59The new Tropicana Orange Culatta from Dunkin Donuts, made with real Tropicana orange juice.
16:04Finally, there's another way to get all the refreshment of oranges.
16:08From the late 90s into the 2000s, the Culatta at Dunkin Donuts established itself as one of the
16:14most iconic frozen beverages out there. Coming in all sorts of flavors, including coffee,
16:20as well as a variety of fruity options, the chain gave its customers plenty of tasty ways to cool off.
16:26Introducing Dunkin Donuts Culatta Whirlands. A culatta like you've never seen before.
16:30Culattas are still available at Dunkin, but only in a select few flavors.
16:35Other flavors are purely delicious memories from the past,
16:38with their legacy firmly tied to Y2K nostalgia.
16:41Rich, frosty, delicious coffee culatta from Dunkin Donuts. Who wouldn't want one?
16:49Number 4. Stuffed Crust Pizza. Pizza Hut.
16:52For many people, when they think of Pizza Hut, they think of Stuffed Crust Pizza.
16:56The Stuffed Crust Pizza, only from Pizza Hut. With a piping hot layer of mouth-watering cheese,
17:01baked right into its soft golden crust. The Stuffed Crust $9.99 deal. Any way to slice it,
17:06it's terrific. Of course, it's still a menu staple to this day. But there's no questioning its firm ties
17:12to the Y2K era. After debuting in 1995, the Pizza Hut Stuffed Crust Pizza changed the game,
17:19with its pizza crust loaded with warm, melted mozzarella cheese.
17:23And we all have Patty Scheibmeyer, a former food scientist for Pizza Hut, to thank for that.
17:29Scheibmeyer told Food Beast that her bosses originally thought she was absolutely crazy when
17:35she first began talking about the new product. And it took three whole years for Stuffed Crust
17:40to come to fruition because of their skepticism. There were multiple now-nostalgic commercials
17:45around the turn of the century, bringing this menu item to light for countless people. And sure enough,
17:52it did not take long at all for the Stuffed Crust Pizza to become one of the chain's most popular
17:57items.
17:57Oh, can we get Stuffed Crust? Mmm, Stuffed Crust. I'll stuff you all in the crust.
18:04Number 3. Chalupa, Taco Bell. In 1999, Taco Bell expanded its menu with the Chalupa,
18:11featuring a deep-fried flatbread shell that offered a chewier, semi-crispy twist on the classic taco format.
18:18That's my Chalupa. That's my Chalupa. That's my Chalupa. That's my Chalupa.
18:28Bye, Chalupa! Since then, the chain has introduced a variety of Chalupa spin-offs,
18:33including one as soon as a year after the original came out.
18:36Sir, drop the Chalupa. Put it down and back away. Sir, don't be silly. Drop the Chalupa.
18:43I said, drop the Chalupa. Put it down, man! Yeah, drop the Chalupa.
18:48Another noteworthy Taco Bell item that came out close to the turn of the century was the gordita,
18:53Chalupa, which, like the Chalupa, has a soft flatbread shell, though not deep-fried.
18:58However, the Chalupa earns the spot on our list thanks to its more iconic status.
19:03So chewy and tasty.
19:05Hurt me.
19:06You'll wonder why we put anything in them at all.
19:09Por favor, drop the Chalupa.
19:12Get your hands on one now for just 99 cents.
19:15Number 2. Cine Minis, Burger King.
19:17These bite-sized cinnamon rolls, served with icing for dipping, were a welcome sight and taste for sweet teeth.
19:24And every time that we...
19:26Ooh!
19:31La la la la la, la la la la.
19:34Burger King's Cine Minis came out in 1998 and went on to gain quite the cult following.
19:40But in 2012, they were discontinued.
19:43Years later, people didn't forget them.
19:45They were clearly missed, possibly in part because they were just so different from other fast food items.
19:50And because they were obviously good.
19:53If you ask us, it just tastes better.
19:56Petitions racked up signatures in an effort to revive some Y2K fast food nostalgia.
20:01That's exactly what ended up happening in 2025, when BK brought back Cine Minis for a limited time.
20:08It's highly requested. Cine Minis were making a return for a limited time.
20:12The treats are bite-sized cinnamon rolls, served with icing for dipping.
20:16They were first introduced in 1998 and were last available in 2012.
20:22Anything cinnamon roll related, I'm in.
20:26Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
20:29Big King, King Supreme, Burger King.
20:33Double cheeseburger introduced in the late 1990s to rival McDonald's Big Mac.
20:38The new Big King from Burger King, flame broiled with 75% more beef.
20:42It's like a Big Mac, except it's bigger and tastes better.
20:44Big and Tasty, McDonald's.
20:46Rolled out nationally in the U.S. in 2001 as a competitor to Burger King's Whopper.
20:51Everybody wants you. Even Kobe Bryant. Introducing the next big thing from McDonald's.
21:01It's the Big and Tasty.
21:04If you love games, be sure to check out WatchMojo's new game, Terrible Influence.
21:09Just launched for purchase at TerribleInfluence.com.
21:12Terrible Influence is a satirical board game about the dark side of fame
21:15from the writer of the most popular girls in school and us, WatchMojo.
21:19Boom. I can make an apology video.
21:22Oh, you so would.
21:23Click on the link in the description to check out the game and be the first to play Terrible Influence.
21:29Number 1. McFlurry, McDonald's.
21:32No matter how long this delicious fast food dessert sticks around,
21:36its Y2K aura and legacy will continue to follow it.
21:40I'll have a, uh, a McFlurry, please.
21:44McDonald's iconic McFlurry was created by a Canadian McDonald's franchisee in 1995 and was
21:51rolled out in the United States two years later. In 1998, it became available nationwide in both
21:57countries. While both the Oreo and M&M McFlurries remained permanent menu items, we can't say the
22:03same for throwback classics like Heath, Nestle Crunch, and Butterfinger. Whichever way you cut it,
22:08those old cups and commercials from the early days are nothing short of nostalgic.
22:13The McFlurry is the epitome of the Y2K fast food dessert scene.
22:17Just imagine M&Ms, Butterfinger, or Oreo cookies. Feel the temperature drop and a cold front blow in
22:25with McDonald's McFlurry dessert.
22:27Is there a discontinued Y2K-era fast food item that you wish would return to the menu?
22:32Let us know in the comments!
