00:04Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the sketches from Saturday Night Live that we
00:10still talk about years later.
00:19Number 20. The Delicious Dish
00:21Dry public radio shows are easy to mock, but SNL took the self-serious programming and made it laugh-out
00:28-loud funny with these sketches.
00:30While the super dry subject matter and frequent use of the phrase good times have certainly stuck with us, one
00:36edition of the sketch has entered the realm of legends.
00:39Well, over at Seasons Eatings, we have balls for every taste. Popcorn balls, cheese balls, rum balls, you name it.
00:46Wow. My mouth's watering just thinking about those things.
00:50The guest? Alec Baldwin, playing Chef Pete Shwetty there to share his specialty, his Shwetty balls.
00:57Well, there's no beating my balls.
01:00They're made from a secret, Shwetty family recipe.
01:04No one can resist my Shwetty balls.
01:07The sheer number of double entendres packed into a few minutes is genuinely impressive and still has us cracking up
01:13after decades.
01:15Good times.
01:16Nothing like a Shwetty ball.
01:18Shwetty balls. Good times.
01:20Good times.
01:21Number 19. Roseanne Rosannadana
01:24Frequent Weekend Update guests often become iconic, and one of the earliest was Gilda Radner's Roseanne Rosannadana.
01:31The correspondent with the massive hair would read out fan mail specifically from Mr. Richard Fader on some current news
01:38or topic, only to go off on a tangent involving celebrities and something disgusting.
01:44My feet swell, my gums are bleeding, my sinuses are clogged, I got heart burning, I'm Frankie and I have
01:49gas.
01:51What should I do?
01:54Mr. Fader, you sound like a real attractive guy.
01:59You belong in New Jersey.
02:01Her brash, oblivious attitude, impossible hair, and several memorable catchphrases helped ensure Roseanne Rosannadana's place in Saturday Night Live history.
02:11But hey, it just goes to show you, it's always something.
02:14If it's not one thing, it's another.
02:17A man writes in and asks questions about possibly the most incredible phenomena of any civilization,
02:23and you start talking about the inside of your mouth.
02:27Well, Jane, it just goes to show you, it's always something.
02:32If it's not one thing, it's another.
02:34Number 18, Lazy Sunday.
02:36There have been many SNL digital shorts, but few have had the kind of impact as Lazy Sunday.
02:42The Lonely Island song was an overnight sensation, and basically helped popularize YouTube as a platform.
02:49Andy Samberg and Chris Parnell rapping about getting cupcakes and seeing the chronic what-culls of Narnia on a Sunday
02:55afternoon
02:56remains incredibly catchy and full of fantastic lines.
03:08Mr. Pibb and Red Vines are indeed crazy delicious.
03:12Also, does anyone else find it crazy that this is now only the second most popular hip-hop song to
03:18mention Alexander Hamilton?
03:19Girl acting like she'd never seen a tin before!
03:22It's all about the Hamilton's, baby!
03:24Throw the snacks in a bag, and I'm ghost like Swayze, Swayze!
03:28Number 17, David S. Pumpkins.
03:30Hey, anybody else?
03:32David S. Pumpkins!
03:36Sometimes a sketch is so weird that it just works.
03:39A haunted elevator ride takes a turn for the bazaar when instead of the usual spooky scares,
03:44a couple encounters the strange David S. Pumpkins and his two skeleton backup dancers.
03:53I'm David Pumpkins!
03:55I know, but like, who are you?
03:58I'm David Pumpkins, man!
04:00Okay, yeah, yeah, and David Pumpkins is...
04:03His own thing!
04:04The trio's quirky dance, as well as their insistence that Pumpkins is his own thing and that the skeletons are
04:11part of it,
04:12are just fun to reference at any opportunity.
04:15Pumpkins has returned several times since the original sketch aired,
04:18and even gotten his own animated Halloween spinoffs.
04:21Any questions?
04:22Are you a ghost, or what are you?
04:25My own thing!
04:27And since you picked the magic, Pumpkin,
04:29I'm yours for Halloween!
04:32Number 16, Fernando.
04:35Barbara, you look marvelous.
04:38Absolutely marvelous, eh?
04:39Anyone could say you look good,
04:41but only a Saturday Night Live fan will say you look marvelous.
04:45It's not just about the words,
04:47it's also about that Latin lover accent that Billy Crystal used to bring his Fernando character
04:52and his popular catchphrase to life.
04:55My friends, I cannot tell you,
04:58you look marvelous.
04:59I'm looking at a reflection of myself, look.
05:02Given that these sketches date back to the early mid-1980s,
05:06the catchphrase might not resonate as much with the younger generation.
05:09It was so big back in the day, though, that Crystal had a hit single with it.
05:14You look marvelous.
05:18Absolutely marvelous.
05:20It's never hard to find an opportunity to use it either,
05:23and it makes people feel good, whether they get the reference or not.
05:27Number 15, Close Encounter.
05:29Kate McKinnon has many great characters on SNL,
05:32but perhaps her most memorable is Colleen Rafferty,
05:35a woman whose encounters with the extraordinary and paranormal are decidedly weird.
05:40And they were making a sound the whole time, like...
05:47One guy was trying to, like, punch it back together.
05:51Rafferty is usually interviewed along with two other people,
05:54but while their encounters with things like aliens, Santa Claus, and ghosts are positive,
05:59hers are not,
06:00and they frequently end up with her being pantsless.
06:03So the cops show up, and mind you, I am still pantsless,
06:07so now I'm spending Christmas morning in the back of a squad car
06:11with my grassy knoll and my gassy hole hanging out.
06:15Rafferty's blunt descriptors of her close encounters,
06:18as well as her rhyming descriptions of her privates,
06:21still have us in stitches,
06:22along with the other cast members and hosts.
06:25Looking at you, Ryan Gosling.
06:27And how did the aliens return you all to Earth?
06:30Oh, I was carried down gently.
06:36He's crying.
06:37Number 14, The Festrunk Brothers.
06:40Mention The Festrunk Brothers,
06:42and you'll probably be met with some blank stares.
06:45Tell them that you are a wild and crazy guy,
06:47and see those stares change to looks of happy recognition.
06:51We are two wild and crazy guys!
06:55While it works as a solo statement,
06:57we prefer to break this one out at parties with a friend.
07:01Now are the foxes!
07:04In a party situation,
07:06there's no shortage of moments
07:08where the two of you can't felt out,
07:10we are two wild and crazy guys,
07:12while of course doing the requisite body-shaking dance moves.
07:16Now you know,
07:17we are two wild and crazy guys!
07:21Number 13,
07:22Total Bastard Airlines.
07:24Think about how many times you say bye every day,
07:27every week.
07:28It's an opportunity ripe with potential.
07:31If only you had a quote slash catchphrase that fit.
07:34Well, we do.
07:44This sketch sees David Spade and Helen Hunt
07:46play flight attendants saying goodbye to the passengers
07:49as they debark the plane.
07:51They don't just say goodbye,
07:52they say bye-bye,
07:54with all the ungrateful and snarky attitude imaginable.
07:58You have been rude to me the entire flight.
08:00No, I wanted a blanket and you never brought it to me.
08:04I will, I will.
08:06It's such a simple premise,
08:07and yet it quickly made its way
08:09into our popular culture lexicon back in the 90s
08:12and remains there to this day.
08:14One, two, three, bye-bye.
08:17Bye-bye, thanks a lot.
08:20Number 12, Coffee Talk.
08:22Mike Myers created so many amazing characters
08:25on Saturday Night Live
08:26and provided a generation
08:27with more quotes and catchphrases
08:29than we knew what to do with.
08:30If we're getting dressed in front of someone,
08:33we can act shy like Simon
08:34and tell them to stop looking at our bum.
08:36I'm having my bath now.
08:38Don't look at my bum.
08:40Don't look at my bum.
08:41That's it.
08:42Bum looker, cheeky monkey.
08:45If we're getting overwhelmed,
08:46we channel Linda Richman
08:48and declare that we are, of course, verklempt.
08:50Now I'm getting emotional.
08:52I'm a little verklempt.
08:53Perhaps our favorite Coffee Talk quote
08:55has got to be
08:56talk amongst yourselves,
08:57I'll give you a topic.
08:59Those of you who can remember
09:00some of the specific conversation topics
09:02she provided have an advantage.
09:04Otherwise, it's time to test
09:06your on-the-spot improv skills.
09:09Now I'm getting a little verklempt.
09:15Talk amongst yourselves.
09:19I'll give you a topic.
09:21Number 11, The Hanukkah Song.
09:23Adam Sandler is arguably better known
09:25for his film career,
09:27but easily his biggest highlight
09:28on Saturday Night Live
09:29is with his little holiday ditty.
09:32In school, there were so many Christmas songs
09:34and all us Jewish kids had
09:36was the song
09:36Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel.
09:37And so I wrote a brand new Hanukkah song
09:41for you Jewish kids to sing
09:43and I hope you like it.
09:44Played during Weekend Update,
09:46Sandler shares his own Hanukkah song,
09:48along with some creative rhymes
09:49with the word Hanukkah,
09:51like yarmulke,
09:51veronica,
09:52and harmonica,
09:53the song mainly consists
09:55of a list of celebrities
09:56who are Jewish or part-Jewish,
09:58as well as a few that aren't.
10:00Paul Newman's half-Jewish
10:02and Goldie Hawn's half-too.
10:05Put them together,
10:06what a fine-looking Jew.
10:08It's a catchy song
10:10and one that proved popular enough
10:12to make it onto the Billboard charts.
10:13Even today,
10:15many SNL fans revisit it
10:17every holiday season,
10:18regardless of faith.
10:19Tell your friend Veronica,
10:21it's time to celebrate Hanukkah.
10:24I hope I get a harmonica
10:25on this lovely, lovely Hanukkah.
10:28So drink your gin and tonica,
10:30but don't smoke marijuanica.
10:32Number 10, Debbie Downer.
10:35We've all met that person
10:36who manages to bring down the mood,
10:38but Debbie Downer gave that person
10:40a name, a face,
10:41and a theme song.
10:42Rachel Dratch's iconic character
10:45never fails to rain on
10:46everyone else's parade
10:47by commenting on the prevalence
10:49of feline AIDS
10:50or other topics
10:51guaranteed to kill the vibe.
10:53Ever since they found
10:54mad cow disease in the U.S.,
10:56I'm not taking any chances.
10:58It can live in your body for years
11:00before it ravages your brain.
11:05Debbie's awkward personality
11:06and the numerous wah-wahs
11:08that accompany her Downer lines
11:10have both her fellow cast members
11:12and us struggling to contain our laughter.
11:14Debbie Downer's name alone
11:16has become slang for somebody
11:17who kills a conversation,
11:19and we still use the term
11:20all the time.
11:22Count me out, guys.
11:23Doctors said if I don't cut down
11:25on my consumption of fish,
11:26my mercury level will reach
11:27toxic proportions.
11:37There have been hundreds if not thousands
11:40of political sketches on SNL,
11:42but this cold open is one
11:44that we still come back to today.
11:46Please, ask this one about dinosaurs.
11:49In conclusion,
11:51I invite the media to grow a pair,
11:54and if you can't,
11:55I will lend you mine.
11:57The classic duo of Tina Fey
11:58and Amy Poehler
11:59play then-vice presidential candidate
12:01Sarah Palin
12:02and then-senator Hillary Clinton.
12:05The pair discuss the presence of sexism
12:07in the 2008 presidential election,
12:09with Clinton being furious throughout
12:11at the disparity
12:12in the way they've both been treated.
12:14Sexism can never be allowed
12:16to permeate an American election.
12:19So please,
12:20stop photoshopping my head
12:22on sexy bikini pictures.
12:24And stop saying I have cankles.
12:27Still, it's arguably Fey
12:29who steals the show here,
12:31since her folksy,
12:32air-headed portrayal of Palin
12:34is so spot-on
12:35that people still think
12:36that the real Palin
12:37actually said that she can see
12:39Russia from her house.
12:40I believe that diplomacy
12:43should be the cornerstone
12:44of any foreign policy.
12:47And I can see Russia
12:48from my house.
12:50Number 8.
12:51Matt Foley Motivational Speaker
12:53Chris Farley was a true force of nature
12:56during his time
12:57on Saturday Night Live.
12:58And maybe no character of his
13:00exemplifies said force
13:01better than motivational speaker
13:03Matt Foley.
13:04From his sarcastic
13:05Lottie Freakin' Da
13:06to his constant references
13:08to his living situation,
13:10Farley's Foley
13:11is forever ingrained
13:12in our minds.
13:13Kinda wanna be a writer?
13:23It comes out more often
13:25than you might think.
13:26Also, just try and tell people
13:28you live in a van
13:29down by the river
13:30without also hunching over,
13:31grabbing your belt,
13:32and twisting from side to side.
13:34Because we can't.
13:36First off,
13:37I am 35 years old,
13:40I am divorced,
13:42and I live
13:43in a van
13:44down by the river.
13:46We do skip the
13:47falling through the coffee table part, though.
13:49Here's you,
13:50here's Matt,
13:51there's you,
13:52there...
14:02Sometimes when we get nervous
14:04about ranking a list,
14:05we stick our hands
14:06under our armpits,
14:07and then we smell them.
14:09Sometimes when I get nervous,
14:10I stick my fingers
14:11under my arms,
14:12and then I smell them like that.
14:14If you're a fan
14:15of 90s Saturday Night Live,
14:17then you're laughing,
14:18or at least smiling right now.
14:20If you're not,
14:20you probably think
14:21we're kinda gross.
14:23Well, to the latter,
14:24we just have to say
14:25that we're definitely
14:26not gross.
14:27We're a superstar.
14:29Spelling P!
14:32Mary Catherine Gallagher
14:34was one of the first
14:35breakout SNL characters
14:36of the second half
14:37of the 1990s,
14:39and her catchphrase
14:40declaring herself
14:41a superstar
14:41was one of the reasons why
14:43Yes, thanks very much.
14:45Superstar!
14:45Talk to a true fan,
14:46and you'll get the quote
14:47along with the forward lunge
14:49and the arms raised as well.
14:50Number 6,
14:51Like a Boss
14:53Thanks to its repeated
14:54titular refrain,
14:55Like a Boss
14:56might just be
14:57the catchiest SNL song ever.
14:59Andy Samberg
15:00taking Seth Rogen
15:01through his typical day
15:02as da boss
15:03in this digital short
15:04starts off pretty ordinary,
15:06but gets gradually
15:07more tragic,
15:08sexual,
15:09and just plain bizarre.
15:11Cry deeply,
15:12demand a refund,
15:14eat a bagel,
15:15harassment lawsuit,
15:16no promotion,
15:18fit the vodka.
15:20Then again,
15:20maybe we just haven't
15:22had a position high enough
15:23on the corporate ladder
15:24to jump out a window,
15:25have sex with a fish,
15:27or turn into a jet
15:28on the daily.
15:29The phrase,
15:29like a boss,
15:30has become synonymous
15:31with doing something
15:32with gusto or pride.
15:34Like me finishing
15:35this voiceover,
15:36like a,
15:36well,
15:37you get it.
15:37Okay,
15:38well,
15:38this has been
15:39eye-opening for me.
15:40I'm the boss.
15:41Yeah,
15:41I know,
15:42I got that.
15:42You said that 400 times.
15:43I'm the boss.
15:44Yeah,
15:45yeah,
15:45I got it.
15:45I'm the boss.
15:46Okay,
15:46great,
15:47I heard you.
15:47Bye.
15:48Number five,
15:49the Californians.
15:51Devin?
15:54What are you doing here?
15:57What do you do
15:58when you walk into a room
15:59and see someone
16:00you weren't expecting?
16:01Do you simply say hi
16:02and ask them
16:03what they're doing here?
16:04That must be
16:05because you've never
16:06seen the Californians
16:07sketch on SNL.
16:08If you had,
16:09then there's no way
16:10you could find yourself
16:11in such a situation
16:12and not muster up
16:13your best over-the-top
16:14West Coast accent
16:15for an elongated
16:16what are you doing here?
16:20What are you doing here?
16:22If the person responds
16:23with the precise driving route
16:24they took to get here,
16:25you know they're a fan also.
16:28What are you doing here?
16:31I live here, Devin.
16:33I could ask you
16:34the same thing
16:35and I think I will.
16:36What are you doing here?
16:39Number four,
16:40Wayne's World.
16:41Going back to Mike Myers,
16:43no SNL sketch of his
16:44garnered more fanfare
16:45and produced more quotes
16:47than Wayne's World.
16:48When it comes to Wayne and Garth,
16:49the question isn't which quotes,
16:51but which one do we start with?
16:53The slightly un-PC swing
16:55in the iconic contradictory knot
16:57might not see the constant use
16:59they did decades ago.
17:00We still like to throw them
17:02in there sometime
17:02for a little retro cred.
17:05Swing!
17:06With friends,
17:08the party on Wayne,
17:09party on Garth
17:10call and response
17:10is still a classic.
17:12Party on Wayne.
17:13Party on Garth.
17:14And yes,
17:15we're the ones
17:16who will still drop down
17:17to our knees
17:17and declare that
17:18we're not worthy.
17:20And no,
17:20it isn't always done
17:21ironically either.
17:23We're not worthy!
17:24We're not worthy!
17:27We're not worthy!
17:29Number 3,
17:30Church Lady.
17:31So why wasn't
17:33the church lady's famous
17:34quote at number one
17:35on our list?
17:36Whose fault is that?
17:37Could it be...
17:38Satan?
17:39Who could it be?
17:41Who could it be?
17:41I just can't imagine who.
17:43Could it be...
17:46Satan?
17:47Nope.
17:48The Lord of the Underworld
17:49had nothing to do
17:50with this one's position
17:51on our list,
17:51but there's no doubting
17:53the special place
17:54this church chat quote
17:55holds in our SNL loving hearts.
17:58You know we love us
17:59some good sarcasm.
18:00And the church lady's
18:02well isn't that special
18:03is sarcastic gold
18:05when it comes to the references
18:06from the long-running show.
18:08Well isn't that special?
18:10If you can follow it up
18:12with Dana Carvey's
18:13church lady dance moves,
18:15that's just bonus points.
18:16This has been
18:17Church Chat
18:18with the church lady.
18:20Number 2,
18:21More Cowbell.
18:23There are SNL memes
18:24and then there's
18:25More Cowbell.
18:26This fictionalized
18:27recording session
18:28of Blue Oyster Cult's
18:29Don't Fear the Reaper
18:30blew up online
18:31and has remained
18:32in the public lexicon
18:33ever since.
18:34If ever a cowbell
18:35comes up in conversation,
