00:00A simple mistake let the most notorious serial killer in American history escape justice.
00:05Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're looking at 20 frustrating mysteries that will likely remain
00:10unsolved. The big question was, had the Amber Room gone up with the castle?
00:15And if so, who had been responsible?
00:19The Mad Gasser of Mattoon. In the late summer of 1944, the small town of Mattoon, Illinois,
00:25descended into a state of panic. Over a span of just two weeks,
00:28more than two dozen residents reported being attacked in their homes by a mysterious prowler
00:32who sprayed a paralyzing gas through their open windows. Victims experienced nausea, coughing,
00:37and temporary paralysis of the legs, though all made quick recoveries without lasting damage.
00:42Despite official police investigations and even an armed posse, no physical evidence of a crazy man
00:47spraying gas into houses was ever confirmed. Many experts believe that the incident was a textbook
00:52case of mass hysteria combined with factory fumes, and that there never was a Mad Gasser,
00:57but we'll never really know for sure. The Lost City of Atlantis.
01:01Atlantis has generated feverish speculation as to whether this fabled island ever existed,
01:08and it spawned scores of crackpot theories about where it might be found.
01:13First described by Plato around 2,400 years ago, Atlantis was said to be a wealthy and
01:19technologically advanced island empire that was swallowed by the ocean. While mainstream scholars
01:24have long maintained that the city is mere allegory, the search for the sunken civilization continues,
01:29with some believing that Plato was inspired by a real event and turned it into a metaphor.
01:33Recent expeditions off the coast of Spain have even uncovered massive concentric circular walls
01:38and linear structures submerged on the ocean floor. Independent researchers claim that these
01:42findings perfectly match Plato's description of Atlantis. So is Atlantis real? Was it a story
01:48inspired by real elements? Is it just straight made up? To this day, no one really knows.
01:53Brand new scientific evidence shows us that disaster was at least twice as large as previously thought.
02:02So could that tragedy be the basis for Plato's Atlantis myth?
02:08Havana syndrome. Suddenly they hear this sound and it fills the air and sounds kind of like cicadas,
02:16only it's a more piercing metallic sound. Starting in 2016, personnel stationed in Havana began reporting
02:23sudden and intense neurological symptoms like migraines, dizziness, and even severe cognitive
02:28difficulties. These so-called anomalous health incidents soon appeared across the globe,
02:33leading to widespread speculation of targeted attacks using secret energy weapons.
02:36However, an updated 2025 assessment from the U.S. intelligence community concluded that it is
02:42quote, very unlikely that a foreign actor is responsible. Furthermore, recent studies led by
02:47the NIH found no consistent brain injuries among the affected individuals. As it stands, we have no idea
02:54why these people became sick, and many are convinced that they are unrelated illnesses.
02:58It's really horrible. These symptoms have just appeared, and there appears to be no treatment.
03:03You have to wonder what could cause this in so many different people.
03:08This is a completely unique find. We have over 900 scrolls, but only one is made of this precious
03:17material. There's only one copper scroll. Discovered in 1952, the copper scroll is unlike any of the other
03:23Dead Sea Scrolls. It's made of alloyed copper instead of parchment, and instead of literary or religious
03:29texts, it lists 64 specific hiding places throughout Judean wilderness containing massive amounts of gold and
03:35silver. Despite the instructions being maddeningly specific, none of the treasures have ever been
03:40found. Some scholars argue the treasure was indeed real, but has long been plundered. Others think the
03:45whole thing is merely a hoax or piece of folklore. With the landscape irrevocably changed over the last two
03:50millennia, the location of the staggering fortune is a riddle we'll likely never solve.
03:54He believes that if the Jewish rebels had the opportunity to have Roman bronze, they would use that material in
04:02other ways.
04:03They would have melted it down for another purpose. He argues that because these objects are deliberately hidden away,
04:09that they are in fact the temple treasure that's identified in the copper scroll.
04:16No one ever really anticipates that some stranger is going to come up and shoot you. You're just helpless. You're
04:23like an animal. You're like an animal getting gunned down. It's terrible.
04:28Operating in the San Francisco Bay Area during the late 1960s, the Zodiac Killer is probably the most famous unidentified
04:34serial killer in American history.
04:36He murdered at least five people, though he claimed to have killed 37. And he notoriously taunted both police and
04:43newspapers with letters and cryptograms.
04:45Modern advancements like DNA testing and genetic genealogy have solved many cold cases throughout history, but they have never been
04:52able to crack the Zodiac.
04:53While Arthur Lee Allen remains the public's favorite suspect, most experts disagree and the forensic evidence consistently cleared him.
05:00Unfortunately, the killer is very likely dead by now, having gotten away with one of the most brazen crime sprees
05:06in American history.
05:07I'd love it if someday we found out who this guy was and had some idea of what motivated him
05:13and why he did it.
05:14I really don't think we'll ever know.
05:17The Isabella Stewart Gardner museum heist.
05:19The pieces that were stolen were priceless masterpieces. One was a Rembrandt seascape known as the storm over the Sea
05:25of Galilee.
05:26It's the only seascape Rembrandt ever did. Another piece was called The Concert. It was by Vermeer.
05:32It's the only Vermeer that's missing in the world. Those two pieces alone were valued at the time of over
05:38200 million dollars.
05:39In the early hours of March 18, 1990, two men disguised as Boston police officers talked their way into the
05:45Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum,
05:47tied up the guards and spent 81 minutes looting the galleries. They made off with 13 masterpieces valued today at
05:54over half a billion dollars.
05:55Despite an exhaustive FBI investigation and a massive 10 million dollar reward, not a single piece of the stolen art
06:02has ever been recovered.
06:04The FBI has a high level of confidence that the heist was executed by a mafia crew out of Dorchester,
06:09but the key suspects were never charged and all have since passed away.
06:13The museum still hangs the empty frames in the exact spots where the paintings once stood, hoping one day that
06:18they will return to their rightful spots.
06:20Unfortunately, they probably never will, as it is abundantly clear that no one is talking.
06:25The theft is the largest unsolved art theft in history, as well as the largest theft of property in America.
06:33Flight 19.
06:34The final words of the men on Flight 19 have been studied and poured over.
06:41Every sentence and word analyzed in depth by the Navy's after action report.
06:47And then, of course, reanalyzed by armchair historians and hacky, cursed TV shows.
06:52The Bermuda Triangle is associated with many bizarre disappearances, including the famous loss of Flight 19.
06:59On December 5th, 1945, five torpedo bombers departed Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale for a routine training mission, but soon
07:06became hopelessly disoriented.
07:07In his increasingly desperate radio transmissions, squad leader Charles Taylor reported that his compasses were malfunctioning and that he couldn't
07:14determine their position.
07:15All five aircraft vanished, and despite extensive searches, no wreckage or bodies were ever recovered.
07:22The ocean is vast and the plains tiny, so we'll likely never find them and discover what exactly happened to
07:28Flight 19.
07:28The radar track showed aircraft going south, over land.
07:34There's a good chance that it could be somewhere in this mid-peninsula east coast of Florida region.
07:39The Black Dahlia.
07:40Betty Bersinger is pushing her three-year-old daughter down the sidewalk in L.A.'s Leimert Park, when the mother
07:47spots what she believes is a mannequin lying on the grass.
07:51The gruesome murder and dismemberment of 22-year-old Elizabeth Short shocked the world in 1947.
07:57Her body was discovered in a vacant lot, bisected and completely drained of blood.
08:01Dubbed the Black Dahlia, Short's murder continues to generate a flurry of public interest, with amateur sleuths and independent investigators
08:08constantly proposing new suspects.
08:10Some have even attempted to use artificial intelligence and cryptology to tie her murder to other infamous criminals, though law
08:17enforcement dismisses such claims as baseless.
08:19With the original investigators long gone and physical evidence degraded, it is almost certain that the Dahlia's killer will never
08:26be identified.
08:27Analyzing her wounds, the coroner believes the cuts to the victim's body are so precise, so surgical, they were likely
08:34performed by a doctor.
08:36The disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa.
08:38We'll bring you back after you get your car.
08:46Yeah.
08:49Okay.
08:52As the powerful president of the Teamsters Union, Jimmy Hoffa was known for his deep ties to organized crime.
08:58On July 30th, 1975, Hoffa vanished from the parking lot of the Maccas Red Fox restaurant in Bloomfield Township, Michigan,
09:05having been there for a scheduled meeting with two mafia leaders.
09:08His disappearance sparked one of the largest FBI investigations in history, generating countless theories about where his body might be
09:15hidden.
09:15Many historians and crime experts believe that Hoffa was murdered by the mob and ultimately incinerated.
09:21With no body, no witnesses, and the suspects long dead, it is extremely likely that Hoffa's disappearance will never be
09:28solved.
09:38It was no more complicated than that.
09:41D.B. Cooper.
09:42He leapt out of a commercial jet with a parachute, $200,000, and was never seen again.
09:50On November 24th, 1971, a man traveling under the alias Dan Cooper boarded a flight in Oregon and handed a
09:58flight attendant a note claiming that he had a bomb in his briefcase.
10:01After successfully extorting $200,000 in ransom money, Cooper strapped the money to his body and parachuted out of the
10:07aircraft into the dark and freezing night.
10:09He was never seen again.
10:11Despite an exhaustive manhunt and a decades-long FBI investigation, Cooper was never found, and his true identity remains a
10:18mystery.
10:19Funnily enough, a small bundle of the ransom cash was recovered in 1980, but it did nothing to solve the
10:25mystery of what happened to its unrightful owner.
10:27If he died, it's unlikely that Cooper's body will ever be recovered given the breadth of the local forests.
10:32Well, really what it's going to take to solve the D.B. Cooper case is D.B. Cooper's body.
10:37It's kind of like Bigfoot, you know, you can come up with lots of evidence, but until you have a
10:41dead body, you really haven't solved the case.
10:44Stonehenge.
10:44This strange monument has been standing in Wiltshire, England for as long as anybody can remember.
10:49Constructed at some point during the third millennia B.C., up to 5,000 years ago.
10:53But despite its fame and popularity as a tourist attraction, nobody knows how Stonehenge was built or what it was
10:59built for.
10:59It may have been constructed by rolling the enormous stones over logs, or even pulling them on a sled.
11:04And it could have been used for ancient religious ceremonies, perhaps the winter solstice.
11:08Then a ring of 56 pits that surround the stones lie the cremated remains of dozens of people.
11:15But with no written records to peruse, we might well never find out exactly why Stonehenge was built.
11:20The Mary Celeste.
11:22The most famous ghost ship in history, the Mary Celeste was found adrift and abandoned in December 1872.
11:27The Mary Celeste, an American registered brigantine, was found 400 miles east of the Azores.
11:34She was in good condition with her cargo intact.
11:36The only things missing were the crew and one lifeboat.
11:39But ten persons, the captain, his family, and crew, had vanished without trace.
11:45It's clear enough that the crew abandoned ship, but with no sign of attack or danger,
11:49the reason the crew sailed away in the lifeboat remains unknown.
11:52Did they believe the ship was sinking due to false instruments, or did something more sinister happen?
11:56The crew themselves was never seen or heard from again, and their story remains untold.
12:01The men found working charts, but not the ship's papers, nor her navigational instruments or maps.
12:08Otherwise, personal effects did not seem to be disturbed.
12:12The Voynich Manuscript.
12:13Since its existence became common knowledge, the 600-year-old Voynich Manuscript has confounded everybody who's ever laid eyes on
12:20it.
12:20It's the world's most mysterious book, written by an unknown author.
12:24The manuscript is a codex full of inscrutable diagrams of plants that don't seem to exist,
12:30written in a language we've yet to decipher.
12:32Even codebreakers from both world wars weren't able to make sense of it,
12:36nor have our best computer algorithms.
12:38The images spark the imagination, but no one's sure what they mean.
12:42Some top researchers have suggested that not only is the text written in a cipher in an archaic language,
12:47all the words may also be anagrams.
12:50Is the Voynich Manuscript a comprehensive guide to alien flora or dark magic?
12:54Or is it the world's most elaborate practical joke?
12:57We may never know.
12:58For the time being, the Voynich Manuscript remains what it has been for the last 600 years.
13:03It's a hall of mirrors reflecting each researcher's own imagination.
13:07Hinterkaifeck.
13:08In the spring of 1922, the Gruber family at Hinterkaifeck Farm was murdered in a brutal attack
13:14that's become one of Germany's most infamous cold cases.
13:17The five Grubers and their maid were killed after unusual occurrences in and around their home,
13:21such as tracks in the snow, a broken lock, and footsteps in the attic.
13:25Rumors later spread that the farm was haunted,
13:28and that strange sounds had caused the previous maid to quit six months before the attack.
13:33Police found evidence that the killer had stayed at the farmstead for several days after the crime.
13:37Could they have been secretly in residence even before the murders?
13:40While there have been many suspects, the culprit has never been found.
13:44What happened to Bobby Dunbar?
13:46During a hot summer in 1912, the Dunbar family headed out to the bayou in Louisiana,
13:51but the day ended in tragedy.
13:53Their young son Bobby disappeared.
13:55Search parties found no trace of him, even after cutting open alligators in case he'd been eaten.
14:00The following April, police claimed they'd found Bobby in the care of an itinerant handyman,
14:04William Cantwell Walters.
14:06However, Walters claimed the boy's name was Bruce Anderson,
14:09and a woman named Julia Anderson came forward as his mother.
14:12Nonetheless, the courts gave the Dunbars custody,
14:15and threw Walters in jail for kidnapping.
14:17In 2004, DNA analysis proved the boy was not Bobby.
14:21This means that what happened to the real Bobby remains a mystery.
14:25The Dancing Plague of 1518.
14:28We've heard of contagious laughter, but contagious dancing?
14:31In July 1518, a woman began dancing in the streets of Strasbourg-Alsace, now part of France.
14:37Must have been a catchy beat because up to 400 people are said to have joined in.
14:41Not just for a few minutes, hours, or days, but for weeks, right up until September.
14:46Supposedly, several participants literally danced themselves to death.
14:50Historians dispute the details, including the alleged fatalities,
14:54but generally agree that an outbreak of dancing mania did occur.
14:57What caused it?
14:58One theory blames psychotropic compounds and fungi.
15:01Another argues that the townspeople suffered from stress-induced psychosis.
15:05But we'll never actually know for sure.
15:07Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.
15:09The fact that the signal disappeared, that was the unusual element.
15:13The fact that that transponder, which was chirping back every time it was hit by the radar beam
15:19from air traffic control, went silent.
15:22On March 8th, 2014, a routine overnight flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing
15:26became the greatest aviation mystery of the modern era.
15:30Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, carrying 239 passengers and crew,
15:34inexplicably deviated from its planned route,
15:37ceased all communications, and vanished from civilian radar.
15:40Numerous pieces of debris have washed up on the shores of the western Indian Ocean over the years,
15:45confirming that the plane crashed.
15:46However, the main fuselage and the crucial black boxes have never been located.
15:51Despite extensive sweeps and renewed deep-sea search efforts,
15:54the rugged ocean floor has refused to give up its secrets.
15:57Without that black box, we will likely never know what caused Flight 370 to deviate from its course.
16:03The aircraft wasn't found. Occupants weren't found.
16:06But yet, 17 months later, they find these pieces of debris thousands of miles away.
16:13And that's what makes this mystery, I think, probably the biggest mystery of all the aviation mysteries.
16:18The Amber Room.
16:19They weren't just grabbing territory.
16:21They were also stealing priceless works of art.
16:27One of them was the Amber Room.
16:30An extraordinary series of 18th century amber screens, worth millions of pounds.
16:37Often dubbed the eighth wonder of the world,
16:39the Amber Room was an opulent chamber located in the Catherine Palace near St. Petersburg.
16:44It was famously constructed from several tons of dazzling amber panels, gold leaf, and mirrors,
16:49making it a truly extravagant work of art.
16:52It drew the attention of invading Nazi forces during World War II,
16:55and they completely dismantled the room and shipped it off to Germany.
16:58However, where it ended up remains a total mystery.
17:02For over 80 years, treasure hunters and historians have chased down countless leads, but to no avail.
17:07The room is likely sitting in a long-forgotten vault somewhere,
17:10or worse, it was destroyed during Allied bombing raids.
17:14Regardless, we probably won't be seeing it again.
17:17He noted on his report, and in his private diary,
17:20that the torching was the responsibility of the Red Army,
17:23who saw the castle as the epitome of Nazism, of everything that they despised,
17:31without thinking of what might be stored in the cellars.
17:36One item of which was the most precious treasure of all.
17:41The Amber Room.
17:42Who was Jack the Ripper?
17:44In the fall of 1888, London's slums were haunted by the most famous serial killer in the world.
17:50Between August 31st and November 9th, five female sex workers were murdered.
17:54Jack the Ripper's reign of terror had begun.
17:57The police received letters from the purported killer, taunting them.
18:01One declared that he was from hell, and included half a human kidney.
18:05Sadly, investigative techniques at the time weren't good enough to catch him.
18:09There were many suspects, including criminals, doctors, and even a member of the royal family.
18:14In fact, over 300 people were investigated.
18:17But, even if one of these suspects was the Ripper, everybody involved has been dead for decades,
18:22meaning it's unlikely we'll ever know his identity.
18:25Even with a corpse, an approximate time of death, and knowledge of the weapon, the police had little to work
18:31with.
18:32The Ark of the Covenant.
18:33This legendary wooden chest is said to contain the tablets the original Ten Commandments are written on,
18:38making it one of the most important religious artifacts in the world.
18:42The only problem is, it's been missing since the 6th century BC, when Jerusalem was destroyed by the Babylonians.
18:48They put the Ark in a place called the Temple of Solomon, in Jerusalem, where it stayed for many years.
18:53Since then, many people have claimed to have found the Ark,
18:56with a group of Christians in Ethiopia even saying they have it today.
18:59But, it's also been said to have found its way to France, Rome, the UK, Egypt, and even the United
19:05States.
19:06When we've already been searching for it for 2,500 years,
19:10it seems doubtful it survived, and that we'll ever find it.
