Lions defense is off to a historically bad start, can it be fixed?
Transcript
00:00Text calls 248-539-9797.
00:04Text says, I started my morning Googling,
00:06what is the Lions record when Goff throws 50 or more times?
00:09Give that a try.
00:10Not great.
00:11Well, yeah.
00:12What did I tell you when we walked in this morning?
00:14It's not a good recipe for winning games.
00:16He threw the ball 52 times.
00:18And again, not perfect.
00:21I'm not going to sit here and say that the offense was perfect.
00:23They have to be perfect to win games.
00:26Goff has been very good with where he goes with the football.
00:30Now, some of the passes early on I thought were wobbly.
00:34I know that there was some that he dirted that were just,
00:37hey, throw away, live to play another day.
00:39He doesn't care about his numbers.
00:41The number that I think is most important right now is
00:44he has yet to turn the ball over.
00:46And he has thrown the ball into some tight spaces.
00:49Yeah, he played well enough to win.
00:51J-Mo's got a haul in a pass early in the game.
00:53He would have been gone off to the races.
00:54Gibbs looked like he had the ball.
00:57That drop ends up taking them away from a red zone drive
01:02and they kick a field goal.
01:03Still waiting for first quarter touchdowns.
01:05They only have one on the season.
01:07And I say all that.
01:08They couldn't run the ball.
01:09I mean, come on.
01:10That's the Carolina run defense had been terrible.
01:11Everybody was gashing him.
01:12They couldn't run the ball.
01:13I say all that.
01:13And yet you're right.
01:14They have to be perfect with this defense.
01:18Woke up this morning.
01:19Glad we still have our second round pick in two years.
01:21What a joke.
01:24And our fifth round pick next year.
01:26Yeah.
01:27Defense is 32nd in the league out of 32 teams.
01:30It can't get worse.
01:31Just worser.
01:31Dump Shep now.
01:33All exclamation marks.
01:34Shep has no clue what he's doing.
01:36Let's go man on third down and send eight.
01:38Fire him today.
01:41How many times in NFL history has the defense been the worst in the entire league and the
01:44defensive coordinator not been fired?
01:47That's a great point.
01:49So is the final nail going to have to be Marvin Harrison getting 100 yards in a game?
01:52Oh, God.
01:52He scored a touchdown yesterday.
01:53We'll find out.
01:54We'll find out on Sunday.
01:58He got rid of he removed the play calling duties from Anthony Lynn and John Morton.
02:05Those are offensive guys where he could grab the reins.
02:08What?
02:08So he doesn't have anybody else to go to?
02:10No, I'm saying he'll have to hand it to somebody else.
02:11I don't think Dan will call the defense.
02:13I mean, just give me a reason why he's a good coordinator.
02:16I don't have one for you.
02:16I told you when he got hired, I didn't like it.
02:18I wanted him then to go out and get what you've been preaching lately.
02:22The vet coordinator, hand it all over to them and let them call it.
02:26We had that discussion at the end of last season and they stuck by Shep and they're still
02:30sticking by Shep, but I don't know how you can keep doing that when we watch these performances.
02:34And when you are an offensive minded coach, like you look at the teams that are really
02:40good.
02:41Kansas City with Spags as Spagnola is their defensive coordinator.
02:46Look at in the division with Ben.
02:49Yeah, Ben.
02:50He goes out and get Dennis Allen.
02:52And then you look at Kevin O'Connell goes out and gets Brian Flores, who at that time,
02:58that was a hot topic hire.
03:01Like that was going to be a contentious hire, but he has done everything to one, earn the
03:09opportunity to be a head coach again, if that's what he wants.
03:11But also that is one of the best defenses in the NFL.
03:19How about the Niners who hire proven Raheem Morris is their DC.
03:23He was the DC with Sean McVay when they won the Super Bowl.
03:26While it's not a hot time to be talking about the Eagles, they did win a Super Bowl hiring
03:29Vic Fangio to run their defense veteran proven commodity.
03:32You can go through it.
03:33There's a literal litany of examples of this.
03:36San Francisco where you go with Rob Salo twice.
03:38You're right.
03:39You know, and he may not be a good head coach, but he's a hell of a defensive coordinator.
03:44Text coming in says force turnovers.
03:46We don't have a DB within five yards of the ball.
03:48I don't know how we're going to force anything.
03:50Costa is one of the most highly annoying human beings in radio history.
03:55First, the double digit crap, and then he brings up SOL today.
04:00Jansen must get paid well to deal with this human.
04:03Okay, I got to own the disco stuff, but am I out of line to invoke SOL today?
04:07You guys know I don't hit that easy button.
04:09That's not three letters that I'm going to go to just because it's I think that might
04:17be a bit of an overreaction.
04:19However, you're seeing you're hearing it from Lions fans.
04:24I've been texted this morning already for some some individuals that were there at the
04:29game and the lines takeover was real and it's such a disrespect to know that your fan
04:35base is going to travel like that.
04:37They're going to spend money like that yet.
04:39You decide that you don't want to do anything defensively.
04:44That's the that's the performance you're going to put out there.
04:45But those guys who are steadfast, I mean, they are Honolulu blue through and through.
04:52They have brought up those three letters as well.
04:54Well, that's the thing you and I have done.
04:55This is our third football season together.
04:57I have never done a Monday SOL show.
05:00This is the first time I'm invoking it because I feel like it's that bad.
05:03It's a Patricia level defense.
05:05It's an oh and 16 level defense.
05:07It's undisciplined penalties.
05:08I mean, it's even the game script, right?
05:11Just a little tease to hook you in late only to let you down.
05:14So that's SOL.
05:17Let's go to Brandon.
05:18Brandon and Holly, you're on 97.1.
05:21Hey, good morning, guys.
05:23How you doing?
05:24Good morning.
05:26I just want to talk about, you know, Brad Holmes, kind of the draft picks have been used and
05:31everything.
05:32I mean, you know, phenomenal job getting, you know, the offense that we've needed.
05:36But it's just, you know, back to Costa with it, the same old lines.
05:41I mean, we're giving up, you know, wide receiver ones.
05:44We're giving up 150 yards a week to them.
05:46It's like, it's just ridiculous at this point, you know, not to look at the people that are
05:53in charge like Shepard and say, hey, like, you got what you got and, you know, you're
05:59not performing with it.
06:01Well, yeah.
06:02And I mean, if it's going to be like this, are you going to let the season sink or are
06:05you going to make a change?
06:06And Dan Campbell didn't seem interested in discussing that last night.
06:09Yeah.
06:10Costa.
06:11Costa.
06:12Got to update those promos.
06:14They did.
06:15I heard the one for this week.
06:17It says Costa.
06:17It says Costa.
06:18We're in Westland.
06:19Is that?
06:20I guess so.
06:21Okay.
06:21Anyway.
06:22Who cares?
06:23Who cares?
06:28Chuck in Detroit.
06:29Chuck, good morning.
06:29All you can do is have a couple laughs.
06:31Try to.
06:31Chuck, what's up?
06:33What's going on?
06:34I just got to say, you know, one thing.
06:36Shep has to go.
06:37I don't care what's going on, but he can't make it to Arizona.
06:40If he's making it to Arizona, everybody needs to go.
06:42Because I know he's going to blow it up and mess it up.
06:44This is going to get worse, and I don't like it.
06:46I mean, I cut it off at halftime last night, and I couldn't do anything.
06:51That's terrible.
06:52I mean, they throw in the $60, sending all the tickets.
06:55I don't even think, you know, that would even be worth it.
06:58Even more.
06:59At this point, I mean, I don't like it.
07:02This is a bad product altogether.
07:05That's all pretty.
07:06Yeah, and think about it.
07:07We had talked, like, get to the bye week, and maybe you get Cade Mays,
07:09Brian Branch, reinforcements.
07:11They need to add at the deadline.
07:12You know, they were in on Joey Porter Jr.
07:15You can't let it go off the rails this quickly.
07:17I mean...
07:18No, you're going to have to bank some.
07:19We talked about that.
07:19You're going to have to bank some wins at some point.
07:22And when you look at their schedule, I don't think anybody thinks that,
07:26hey, going to Arizona, none of these are give-me's anymore.
07:30And then you come back from the bye week, you've got Green Bay, Minnesota.
07:34Miami put up a fight yesterday.
07:36New England beat Buffalo.
07:38I mean, it's...
07:40And then you get to the end of the season, which is why you have to bank wins now,
07:45because three of your four at the end are on the road in division.
07:52Tom put this text in all bold.
07:55The Lions are the worst defense on third down, allowing over 50% conversion through four games.
08:03Guys, why are we blaming Shep?
08:05We should place the guy who...
08:06Blame the guy who hired him.
08:09There's plenty of blame to go around.
08:11Yeah.
08:11I mean, it's...
08:13When...
08:13After last season, we thought that there was a chance that he would make a change.
08:16And then he says, no, I'm...
08:17You know, I think he's a hell of a coach.
08:22How about this?
08:23Anything on this, John?
08:24The Panthers are knocking down four or five passes a game, and we didn't swat anything with a 5-5
08:29quarterback, as this text labels him.
08:31Well, and you listen to the end of the game, and there's MVP chants for Bryce Young.
08:37And he's not an MVP caliber quarterback, but then you think about the quarterbacks that you've struggled with, and it
08:43is Tyler Shuck.
08:45Obviously, everybody's going to struggle with Josh Allen, but it's Geno Smith, now Bryce Young.
08:50You know, it's bad when the TV broadcast is making Bryce Young to Drew Brees comparisons.
08:57Never a good sign when they come out of a commercial and go, let's show a side-by-side with
09:03a Hall of Fame quarterback.
09:05That's what's happening to you.
09:07It's going to be like that every week.
09:09It will be.
09:11Something's got to change.
09:122-4-8-5-3-9-97-97.
09:15Overreact Jim's next.
09:16We'll get into a little bit of what happened at Little Caesars Arena.
09:19It's 97-1.
