Jeremy White and Joe DiBiase continue breaking down the Bills tough 29-26 loss to the New England Patriots that drops them to 3-1 on the season. They spend a segment discussing the MAJOR issues in the Bills defensive secondary, starting with second-year corner Maxwell Hairston who had a BRUTAL day in coverage and gave up crucial plays in the game. They take a few calls and land on a discussion on LB Terrel Bernard who has struggled mightily the last couple seasons.

00:00We're young on defense especially and we need to be able to work through some things and we need to
00:04be able to, you know, not have successful plays and be able to play the next play and, you know,
00:09I trust our defensive coaches in terms of understanding what the rotation is and getting a feel and a flow
00:13of the game, right? I don't want to be a micromanager and anytime a guy makes a play, it's like,
00:17hey, take him out or, you know, how it's kind of going.
00:20Slice of audio from the locker room brought to you by Picasso's. We are Buffalo Pizza. That's Bill's head coach.
00:26Joe Brady asked about Maxwell Hairston. He's asked later if there's any thought to go to Kanai Walker or somebody
00:32in there for him. That's where he says, like, there's a reason that Maxwell Hairston is out there. A first
00:37round pick and how's it going so far? Some good, some bad.
00:43I really felt like before yesterday, there wasn't much bad. Like, was there a really, he allowed a long, was
00:52it a touchdown against Waddle last year in Miami? Yep. There was a play there. I don't know if that
00:57was a game. That was a play. Was there a bad game before yesterday? Even if there wasn't, it was
01:05one of the worst games watching for a Bill's corner that I can remember.
01:10Like, Justin Rogers against Stephen Hill and the Jets like 15 years ago. Wow. It's like on, it's on a
01:16list of... Not many people are ready with that one. No, but that was, go back and watch some highlights
01:21from that game. It's like the worst game you've ever seen.
01:24It was pretty tough. What doesn't even show up in the stats sheet, what's the situation where he holds in
01:30the end zone? Don't the Bills have them there? They get a sack on May and maybe it's third down
01:35and he takes a holding in the end zone and now it's first and goal at the one and like,
01:39you know they're getting in from there.
01:40Yeah. So, yeah, it was, it was tough. Sean Syed had the stat on them from Sumer Sports that the
01:47Bills so far have the fourth best pressure rate in the NFL this year, but they rank 28th in EPA
01:53per dropback.
01:54And even yesterday, it felt like May had time yesterday, but they got to him a couple times. Pressure rate,
02:00he was the eighth most pressured quarterback in football yesterday and he was pressured 18 times. That was seventh.
02:06So, they got near him, but you can't be 28th in EPA per dropback when you are getting a pass
02:14rush. And that, to me, is, that's a secondary stat. That is, you can't cover anybody right now. No matter
02:20who's out there.
02:218-0-3-0-5-50. The Bills had won 22 consecutive games when leading at halftime. That's the first
02:27loss in 23 games.
02:29Do you know what that game was? The last time they lost?
02:31Uh, no. I could find it. Because that's, that's probably three years ago. It's got to be three years ago,
02:37at least.
02:38Might it be Minnesota? Oh, it could be it. Maybe? I don't know. That's possible.
02:42Is this 22 games ago? I don't know if that includes the playoffs as well.
02:46Anyway, talking about lots of it with you, if you want to talk about the offense, the defense, the coaches,
02:53you know, and also how concerned you should be about this.
02:57What does it really say? The Rams lost their opener 24-7 and remain a Super Bowl favorite.
03:04The Bills, they're still going to be one of the Super Bowl favorites.
03:07Every other, a lot of these teams have lost a game. The Chiefs did not lose to the Raiders, but
03:11if you did watch that game, you saw what happens every time the Chiefs play the Raiders.
03:15It's the Raiders making unbelievably brain-melting mistakes.
03:20They're getting the ball with a chance to go down and get the win, and they fumble the kickoff.
03:26Yeah.
03:27Which is incredible.
03:30I got a hot take on that play later.
03:33Also, they decided to go for...
03:35What are they doing in the last play of the game?
03:37What are they doing kicking a field goal to take a two-point lead on Patrick Mahomes, who was literally
03:40never lost in Vegas.
03:42I was losing my mind.
03:43Fourth and one.
03:44Nance and Watt in agreement, like, oh, that's the decision I would make.
03:46That's the right call.
03:47That's the right call.
03:48Not even a question.
03:49That's the right call.
03:50Like, yeah, let's kick field goals against the Chiefs, because inevitably that always goes well for the other team.
03:54They lost Taequann Thornton to an ankle injury.
03:57He made a big play and then stood up happy and realized his ankle was on the wrong way.
04:01That was tough.
04:02And then Kenneth Walker ran all over the Vegas' faces.
04:06Rashi Rice got hurt, too.
04:07Yeah, we're in trouble.
04:08Maybe.
04:09Or they're fine.
04:10Zach on the west side.
04:11Zach, good morning.
04:13Hey, good morning, guys.
04:16I'd like to start out with a positive.
04:18But Agent Zero, Keon, really showed some true professionalism, some maturity today, which is a little ironic, because it seems
04:28like not naming names, man.
04:29It seems like some of these guys might be out a little too late.
04:34I know it for a fact, but take it for what it is.
04:38Some people got their hands on their hips when they're supposed to be the leaders of the team.
04:46I don't know, man.
04:46But I'm a DJ, and they talk about us out of rhythm.
04:51And I know I'm out of rhythm for sure when I don't take care of myself and don't show up
04:57to work the next day ready to go.
05:00So that's that.
05:01Yeah, I did not notice this at all.
05:04Players being, like, tired like that.
05:09I don't know.
05:11They're out too late, and they're out of shape.
05:12Like, I don't think that's why they lost the game yesterday.
05:13I think you're talking about one specific player who's hands on the hips and supposed to be a leader, but
05:17I don't know who that is.
05:18So you said you didn't want to name names, so we'll just guess.
05:22Hands on hips could be 50 people.
05:23I don't even know who I would guess at that.
05:26But I don't know.
05:27If you're just guessing players that did not have a great day, Deion Dawkins on the list.
05:32That's true.
05:33Dawkins had a rough game.
05:34But that's not the guy for that because he just spent the whole offseason taking care of his body and
05:38getting in shape.
05:39So that wouldn't be the guy.
05:41Yeah, I don't know.
05:42Let's talk about Hairston.
05:43I just – I don't know.
05:47Rob in Connecticut.
05:48Hey, Rob.
05:50Jeremy, Joe, what's going on, man?
05:52Man, I tell you, I come to bed and I want you to tell me to relax.
05:56But I'm absolutely disgusted.
05:59It just seemed like there was no balance with us yesterday either or, you know, offensively, defensively.
06:07The play calling was absolutely disgusting.
06:12You know, I forgot about Drake May's legs.
06:14You know, I was talking about how his shoulder was busted up.
06:17Of course, he killed his shoulder.
06:18The shoulder looked great yesterday.
06:20Never thought about his shoulder one time yesterday.
06:22Yeah, he did it all.
06:24Exactly.
06:24It's like everybody all week long, you know, Drake May's busted up, this, that, the whole land yard.
06:29I've learned that – I went in with expectations.
06:33And that's where, you know, it leads to disappointment.
06:35And that's why I'm so disgusted with what happened.
06:39Now I'm already thinking about next week and the week after.
06:43It's like, are we going to even be able to get past the Rams and the Raiders?
06:47Even though the Raiders lost yesterday, it's still going to be scary.
06:51Are we going to go 3-3 going into the bye?
06:54It's like, you know, it's frustrating to be a Bills fan.
06:59I listen to you guys every day.
07:01And sometimes you kind of, you know, put things into perspective and say, relax.
07:06And just back to the drawing board, you know, it's like – and we – the D-backs, you know,
07:13it's like, you know, what's his name from the Steelers?
07:16I was thinking about him.
07:18Joey Porter?
07:19Yeah.
07:20It's like, why couldn't we get – we got to bring somebody in, you know.
07:23And, hey, I don't know.
07:27I just –
07:27Well, you know –
07:28Tell me it's going to be okay, Jeremy.
07:29Please, tell me it's going to be okay.
07:31Well, you can't win the Super Bowl in October, right?
07:35And what team right now – the undefeated teams are the Chiefs, the Vikings, and the 49ers.
07:41The Vikings are not real.
07:43That's not happening.
07:44The Chiefs look better, and the 49ers look like a juggernaut right now.
07:49But they're still – I don't know.
07:51If they played a game tomorrow, would the Rams be favored if they're fully healthy?
07:54Maybe.
07:55You lose games.
07:56This is exactly what happened last year.
07:57Last year they started 4-0 and lost to the Patriots.
08:00Two years ago – or three years ago – they beat the Dolphins, who had just scored 70 points.
08:06They got off to this start.
08:07We kind of made this point after week two, which is we've definitely been in this exact spot.
08:13It's why Nick Wright is crowned the Bills September champions every year.
08:16They always come out of the gate really hot.
08:18And then they suffer a loss right around now, right?
08:21What's the deepest end of the season in the Sean McDermott era they got in undefeated?
08:26Is it 6-0?
08:28Well, I don't remember.
08:28We haven't had a 10-0 season where they started.
08:31This is very normal.
08:33It's very normal for what happens.
08:35So if you want me to try and talk you down, I wouldn't be freaking out too much.
08:39All we do between now and January is look for things that we think could be problems and what will
08:46take them down.
08:47I said – we had a show this week where I asked, what is their fatal flaw?
08:51And we haven't really seen it yet.
08:53What will it be?
08:54Well, all right.
08:54I think it's past defense.
08:55I think it's corner.
08:57I think we've identified it.
08:58There's a game against the Chargers.
09:00They looked okay.
09:01Other than that, it might be a fatal flaw.
09:03For as much heat as Hairston's getting today, are we sure it's any different if it's Christian Benford in there?
09:11Christian Benford has not had a good start to the season.
09:13All right.
09:14So you could say Hairston has looked good.
09:17That's because Benford has not been somebody they've been afraid to target.
09:19They go after Benford in the first two weeks, three weeks.
09:22Now Benford's out and they go right after Hairston.
09:24Could it just be that the man coverage corners that they have are still adjusting to the Jim Leonard scheme
09:30and other quarterbacks are not all that worried about it?
09:33Why would they be?
09:34What's Matthew Stafford going to do when he sees these guys in man coverage?
09:38Are you going to stay away from Benford to go at Hairston?
09:40Are you going to stay away from Hairston to go at IGB?
09:42I mean, probably just going to throw to the guys they think are open in those spots.
09:46Early in the game, the Patriots had whatever they want over the middle of the field.
09:49Yes.
09:49Hunter Henry, Eli Raritan, that opening drive was tight ends running wide open.
09:55Well, I think it's not just the corners.
09:57It's the linebackers too right now and their ability to cover is not there.
10:01No, it's not.
10:01Bernard and Williams.
10:03And Bernard, you know, he showed up here as a third-round pick that we thought at the time,
10:09if you go all the way back to when they drafted him, it was like, oh, interesting, an undersized linebacker.
10:12I wonder what you do there.
10:14And he showed up and he was a playmaker.
10:16He's been a playmaker at times.
10:18But we're on, well, probably injuries.
10:21Is it injuries that really have robbed him of what he really did well?
10:25Because now it's how many consecutive seasons of, you're going to roll him out there, it looks like you've got
10:29a problem.
10:30But I remember the analysis of him in his first year as a starter.
10:33This is his fourth year as a starter.
10:34His first year, I remember it being, he got a ton of splash plays, which was such a breath of
10:41fresh air at that time.
10:42Because we had Tremaine Edmonds.
10:43He was replacing Tremaine Edmonds, who was totally consistent, never gave you splash plays, ever.
10:48This guy, okay, well, he might be inconsistent, but look, he had six and a half sacks and three interceptions.
10:53And like, we're getting big wow plays.
10:55But I remember that always being there.
10:57Like, yeah, but all these other plays, he's making a lot of mistakes.
11:01Then the next year, he was just great.
11:03And then the last two years have been pretty tough.
11:06But there was the injury.
11:07So I wasn't ever really, I don't know if I've ever been sure how good he is.
11:10But I feel like four years as a starter, three of them now were like, you know,
11:15like, he's probably paid appropriately, which is like very low among starting linebackers in football.
11:22And yesterday, like, he wasn't really able to cover the running backs.
11:26He's just lost on the Stevenson two-point conversion.
11:29The two-point conversions mattered a lot.
11:30It's why they lost the game.
11:31If they get their two-point conversion, what do the Patriots do?
11:34They kick theirs.
11:35But you still have a chance to keep them to a point where, hey, field goal wins the football game.
11:41Maybe Josh Allen acts differently on that final drive if a field goal wins the football game
11:45rather than ties the football game.
11:47Maybe not.
11:47Maybe.
11:48But Bernard just loses Stevenson.
11:50Like, I know May's scrambling up, but there's a guy there that's about to make that tackle.
11:54Meanwhile, you're just leaving the running back wide open on the side.
11:57It's not going well for him.
11:59And I think he's probably sliding under the radar because the secondary has been so poor.
12:07803-0550.
12:09Lots to get to.
12:11The Bills lose.
12:12The Patriots.
12:13And we'll get your eye on the quarterback.
12:15Let's do that now because we were just talking about, Alan, and the two-point conversions.
12:19Eye on the quarterback brought to you by Great Lakes Building Systems.
12:21We keep an eye on your business so you don't have to.
12:23Great Lakes Building Systems.
12:24Our business is protecting your business.
12:27The last eight quarters throwing the ball, one touchdown.
12:31And that's to Keon Coleman.
12:34I tried to get a second one in there.
12:36Was it a fade?
12:37It was kind of a fade, right?
12:38Back shoulder, back shoulder.
12:40Then they tush-pushed on the next ball.
12:41Which I thought was pretty poor clock management myself.
12:45Right?
12:46Where was that?
12:47Was that the end of the first half?
12:48No.
12:49That's the second half.
12:50No, maybe you're right.
12:51Yes.
12:52End of the first half because you're giving the Patriots the ball with time left.
12:55And then, of course, that sequence of events went bonkers.
12:59Right.
13:00But throwing a fade route there stops the clock.
13:02I thought that was strange.
13:02Yeah, it was 106 left on second and one.
13:04They threw it to Coleman.
13:05Yeah, if you run and fail, you're taking it all the way down and you're going to eliminate
13:09their double dip potential.
13:12Anyway, like I said, that four minutes or that minute after that was nuts.
13:15There were, right.
13:17After the Coleman play and the touchdown, there were four more drives.
13:21Yes, it's insane.
13:22It's totally insane.
13:23That's insane.
