00:01Look, when the war began, what we saw, unfortunately, was that first week of the conflict.
00:07Oil companies in Australia, the major ones, put their prices up very quickly, much higher
00:12than we expected them to go.
00:13That then led to panic buying.
00:15That coupled with the news coming out of the Middle East, we saw people buying fuel at
00:19five times the rate they normally would, and industry was as guilty.
00:23So we knew that mining and farming were doing similar, transport companies were just buying
00:28up, especially diesel, and that unfortunately led to domestic supply shortages.
00:33People have stabilised their behaviour, we've gone back to buying fuel when we need it, which
00:37is good news.
00:38The government has been able to source supply from other parts of the world, so we're getting
00:43more from the United States, we're getting some from South America, more from Asia.
00:47So we do have enough fuel in the country, and it's a really important message because when
00:52the supply shock hit, it was just before the Easter holiday break, and so a lot of families
00:56chose not to go away.
00:57Thankfully this time, we can give people the assurance that they can go away, have a well-earned
01:03break, enjoy the October long weekend and the summer period, or the spring period, and
01:08they'll be able to fill up on their way home.
01:10There's not much we can do about what's going on in the Middle East, but there is stuff that
01:13families can do to make sure that they're not paying more than they should.
01:16That's the first thing we always tell people to do.
01:18Do your research before you fill up.
01:20The gap between the cheapest and the most expensive service station in Sydney this morning
01:24is about 25 cents a litre.
01:25It's normally double that, but since the war and the oil prices spike, we've seen that
01:29come in, but there are always bargains in every neighbourhood.
01:33Don't fill up at the first service station, you see, because there's often going to be
01:36one around the corner that's cheaper.
01:38You've got those prices available to you in real time through the Straight and Territory
01:42website, through the NRMA's app.
01:43So, do your research before you fill up.
01:46Don't carry unnecessary weight in the vehicle.
01:48Make sure the tyre pressures are accurate.
01:50If your car can take E10, you should think about using E10, because it's the cheapest
01:54fuel on the forecourt in Australia, and it's also the ethanol component of E10 is produced
01:59domestically in Australia.
02:01We don't import it.
02:02So, every litre of ethanol we use is one less litre of oil that we have to import from
02:07some of the most volatile parts of the world.
