00:00It started going faster and faster, and it's getting harder to hold on, and I said, well, shit, that ain't
00:06good.
00:07Welcome to WatchMojo, and today, we're breaking down everything we know about our upcoming dual protagonists from Grand Theft Auto
00:146.
00:15Rockstar's newest icons aren't just partners in crime.
00:19They come with established histories, complicated ambitions, and a relationship that players will have considerably more influence over than we're
00:26used to seeing in GTA.
00:27Keep in mind, we're only going with established lore rather than speculation or whatever the leaks proclaim.
00:34Does this mean we're in his crew?
00:36Yeah.
00:37Jason Duvall.
00:38I got in some trouble in the army. Didn't leave on the best of terms. They don't give loans or
00:44anything to people like me.
00:46Jason Duvall doesn't seem interested in becoming the next kingpin of Vice City.
00:51If anything, Rockstar describes him as a man who desperately wants an easy life, which is unfortunate considering he's starring
00:58in a Grand Theft Auto game.
01:00Crime has surrounded Jason for most of his life.
01:03He grew up around what Rockstar calls grifters and crooks, and his teenage years were troubled enough that joining the
01:08army became his attempt at escaping that environment.
01:15Exactly what Jason did during his military service remains unknown, but it establishes something important about him.
01:22At some point, he genuinely tried to change direction.
01:26Unfortunately, it didn't stick.
01:31After leaving the army, Jason ended up in the Leonida Keys, where he fell back on what he already understood,
01:38working with local drug runners.
01:39Rather than entering the story as some inexperienced criminal learning the ropes, Jason already appears comfortable operating on the fringes
01:47of the law.
01:48He knows smugglers, understands the environment, and presumably has enough criminal competence to be useful without necessarily wanting to spend
01:55the rest of his life doing it.
01:57Rockstar even suggests that it might finally be time for him to try something new.
02:03Jason.
02:04You'll see ya.
02:05Yeah.
02:06Yeah.
02:07We gotta go.
02:07Unfortunately, his current living arrangements aren't exactly helping with the clean break.
02:13Jason resides rent-free in a property belonging to Brian Heater, an old-school smuggler who has spent decades moving
02:19drugs through the Keys.
02:21But, there's a catch, because of course there is.
02:24Just go get me my checks!
02:26See you, Brian.
02:28Love you, Jason.
02:29In exchange for the accommodation, Jason helps Brian perform local shakedowns and other dirty work.
02:34Brian is old enough and experienced enough to let younger men take the risks while he enjoys the benefits.
02:41Jason, therefore, begins GTA 6 already trapped in the sort of arrangement he supposedly wants to escape.
02:48You got a point?
02:48Yeah.
02:49Yeah.
02:51You gotta know when to get off, Jason.
02:54Jason also has an established friend in Cal Hampton, another Brian associate whose hobbies include drinking beer, monitoring Coast Guard
03:03communications, and believing almost everything on the internet.
03:07Bring the bells!
03:08Shots, baby!
03:09Cal is apparently quite content living at what Rockstar calls the low tide of America.
03:15Jason, however, wants more.
03:17Hey, if you got friends, can you hook me?
03:19Ah, please!
03:20And that's where Lucia enters the picture.
03:23I'm here for Lucia Camino's.
03:25She's supposed to be getting out.
03:27What's your name?
03:28Jason Duvall.
03:30I've seen you here before.
03:32You might have.
03:33Rockstar describes meeting her as potentially the best or worst thing that has ever happened to Jason.
03:39He clearly wants their relationship to work, but even the official character description admits that he doesn't know where things
03:45are heading.
03:46That makes Jason an interesting contrast to several previous GTA protagonists.
03:51Michael already had everything and hated it.
03:54I'm rich.
03:55I'm miserable.
03:56I'm pretty average for this town.
03:58Nico wanted to escape his past, but kept getting dragged back into violence.
04:02When the war came, I did bad things.
04:04And after the war, I thought nothing of doing bad things.
04:08I killed people, smuggled people, sold people.
04:12Jason appears closer to the latter archetype.
04:15Someone who understands criminal life has already tried escaping it once and now finds himself standing beside someone who could
04:21either be his saving grace or pull him so deep into the underbelly that a normal life would be forever
04:26out of reach.
04:28Knowing GTA, it's probably both.
04:30This is a free call from Lucia Caminos.
04:35Lucia Caminos.
04:36Lucia, you know why you're here.
04:39Bad luck, I guess.
04:40If Jason is someone who keeps drifting back into crime, Lucia sounds like someone who dives in headfirst regardless of
04:48the current.
04:51You and me, Luke.
04:52We got this.
04:53We got it.
04:54Rockstar's description of her begins almost from birth.
04:57Lucia's father taught her how to fight as soon as she could walk, suggesting she grew up in an environment
05:02where being capable of defending yourself wasn't optional.
05:05We still don't know much about her father, but that upbringing clearly stuck.
05:10Lucia is presented as confident, physically capable, and far more willing than Jason to actively shape her circumstances rather than
05:18simply react to them.
05:19That instinct to fight also appears to be what eventually sent her to prison.
05:23Hands above your head!
05:24Rockstar states that fighting for her family landed Lucia in the Leonida Penitentiary.
05:30Precisely, what happened has deliberately been kept secret, meaning we don't yet know who she defended, who she hurt, or
05:37exactly what crime put her behind bars.
05:40But importantly, Rockstar frames the incident around loyalty rather than simple greed.
05:45Hey.
05:46Hey.
05:47Getting back out wasn't necessarily part of some flawless criminal master plan either.
05:52According to Lucia's official biography, sheer luck got her out.
05:56Whatever circumstances resulted in her release, Lucia apparently understands that she received an opportunity she might not get twice.
06:04Her takeaway from prison is simple.
06:06From now on, only smart moves.
06:09The only thing that matters is who you know and what you got.
06:14If you're gonna do this, you're doing it right.
06:16Whether robbing businesses across Leonida qualifies as a smart move remains to be determined.
06:22What motivates Lucia seems strongly connected to her family history.
06:26Rockstar reveals that her mother had dreamed of living a better life since their days in Liberty City,
06:31giving Lucia one of the most intriguing connections to an established GTA location.
06:36That doesn't necessarily mean we're heading back there,
06:39but it confirms that Lucia's family lived in the series' version of New York before eventually ending up in Leonida.
06:45More importantly, Lucia appears to have inherited her mother's dream while rejecting the idea of simply waiting for it to
06:52happen.
06:52She wants the good life, money, security, and freedom,
06:56but Rockstar specifically contrasts Lucia with people content to fantasize about escaping poverty.
07:02She intends to change her circumstances herself.
07:05Fresh out of prison, she's described as being ready to shift the odds in her favor,
07:09and once Lucia commits to a plan, Rockstar says she's willing to pursue it no matter what it takes.
07:15Trust me, this place is just the start for us.
07:18That wording makes her sound potentially more ambitious than Jason.
07:22He wants life to become easier.
07:24Lucia seems determined to make life better.
07:27It's a subtle distinction, but it could become one of the most important pieces of their relationship.
07:32Jason has already tried running away from a criminal upbringing and ended up right back where he started.
07:38Lucia has just survived prison and appears convinced she can beat the system if she plays intelligently enough.
07:44Neither philosophy exactly screams, this will end peacefully.
07:49Seriously, what reason do we have to trust this guy?
07:51Alright, so how do you want to play it?
07:53Slow play. Just say, hi, nice to meet you, here's your car, where's our payment?
08:00Please let us know about any further criminal opportunities.
08:03And yet, Lucia clearly believes Jason could be part of the future she's chasing.
08:08Rockstar openly states that a life with Jason could be her way out.
08:13Whether out means escaping poverty, leaving crime behind, or simply building something stable together remains unclear.
08:19What we do know is that Lucia isn't simply being positioned as Jason's girlfriend.
08:25She has her own family history, her own criminal record, her own ambitions, and perhaps most importantly, her own idea
08:32of what their future should look like.
08:34Ready.
08:35Damn, worth the wait.
08:37Jason may want paradise, but Lucia appears ready to steal it.
08:42You want me to take the wheel?
08:43What?
08:44No.
08:45Look, you think everything always goes as planned, huh?
08:48No, mommy, no.
08:50There will always be some kind of bullshit.
08:52Our professional adapts.
08:53Are you a professional, Lucia?
08:55Huh?
08:55Of course.
08:56Jason and Lucia.
08:58The only way we're gonna get through this is by sticking together.
09:04Being a team.
09:06Of course, neither character really makes sense without the other.
09:10Jason and Lucia begin GTA 6 already deeply connected, but Rockstar has increasingly revealed that their relationship is more complicated
09:18than simply saying,
09:20here are this game's Bonnie and Clyde.
09:22The new beginnings.
09:23You look the new, isn't it?
09:26Lucia sees life with Jason as a possible escape route.
09:29Jason, meanwhile, sees meeting Lucia as something capable of changing his entire life for better or worse.
09:35Both want something beyond their current circumstances, but neither seems particularly well-equipped to reach it legally.
09:42Then comes the job that changes everything.
09:45I don't know what this is.
09:47Look, I was just sightseeing with my girl.
09:50Rockstar's official story synopsis reveals that an apparently easy score goes wrong,
09:55plunging Jason and Lucia into a criminal conspiracy that stretches across the entire state of Leonida.
10:01Suddenly, their relatively local criminal lives become part of something much larger,
10:06and Rockstar says they'll have to depend on one another more than ever if they hope to survive.
10:11Are we gonna be okay?
10:13We've stuck together through everything.
10:15Just gotta get through it.
10:16That dependency extends directly into gameplay.
10:20Both Jason and Lucia are playable protagonists,
10:23returning to the multiple character structure introduced in GTA 5,
10:27but with a considerably tighter emotional focus.
10:30Rather than following three men whose stories repeatedly intersect,
10:34GTA 6 centers its narrative around one pair whose lives are already intertwined.
10:40And perhaps the biggest difference is that the romantic part of that relationship isn't completely predetermined.
10:46Rockstar North's Rob Nelson has confirmed that Jason and Lucia must remain collaborators
10:51because the story continually puts them in situations requiring them to work together.
10:55So Val, I know it's a party, but we are working.
10:58Whether they remain deeply romantic, however, depends partly on the player.
11:03Spending time together and nurturing the relationship can strengthen it,
11:06while players uninterested in the romance can largely ignore that side of their dynamic
11:11without preventing the story from progressing.
11:14They'll remain partners in crime either way.
11:16That means the mundane moments could matter almost as much as the robberies.
11:21Extended gameplay has shown Jason and Lucia spending time together outside traditional missions,
11:26and GTA 6 contains an unusually broad assortment of recreational activities.
11:31Footage has demonstrated things like basketball, gym workouts, racing, kayaking, scuba diving,
11:36watercraft, and parachuting, alongside the usual nightlife and general Vice City chaos.
11:41Some activities can even be experienced as outings involving both protagonists.
11:47That emphasis feels deliberate.
11:49This could be the start of something good.
11:53Keep your phones on.
11:54Previous GTA protagonists had friends, girlfriends, and social activities,
11:59but those relationships generally existed around the edges of the main crime story.
12:04With Jason and Lucia, Rockstar appears to be attempting something much more integrated.
12:08Two people who rob together, run from police together, argue together, relax together,
12:13and potentially build or neglect their romantic relationship during ordinary free-roam gameplay.
12:19I don't mind.
12:20I mean, I...
12:20I think if you wanted to.
12:22Rob Nelson has also stated the pair will always have one another's backs when things turn violent.
12:27During demonstrated gameplay, the character not directly controlled by the player
12:31can actively participate alongside their partner,
12:34reinforcing the idea that Jason and Lucia aren't simply two avatars being swapped in and out of existence.
12:40And that may ultimately be what separates GTA 6 from its predecessors.
12:45The spectacular crimes are obviously still there.
12:49So are car chases, shootouts, robberies,
12:51and enough questionable decisions to keep Leonidas' police department extremely busy.
12:56But Rockstar seems equally interested in asking whether two criminals can actually maintain something
13:02resembling a functioning relationship while everything around them collapses.
13:06Jason wants an easy life.
13:08Lucia wants a better one.
13:10Unfortunately, they've apparently decided the fastest route to both involves armed robbery.
13:15Trust.
13:17Trust.
13:18And that's everything we currently know about Jason and Lucia in Grand Theft Auto 6.
13:23Which protagonist are you most interested in playing as?
