Transcript
00:00Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most iconic times when supervillains revealed their identities.
00:06We'll be exploring films and comics. Beware of potential spoilers.
00:10The Thunderbolts, are they the exciting new heroes the world needs?
00:16Number 10. Henry Ducard's True Identity
00:18Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins introduced audiences to Henry Ducard, a wise and charismatic mentor who trains a young Bruce Wayne
00:25in the ways of the League of Shadows.
00:27To manipulate the fears and others, you must first master your own. Are you ready to begin?
00:38I can barely stand.
00:40Death does not wait for you to be ready!
00:42He's compelling, intense, and crucially, feels like exactly the kind of teaching figure a superhero origin story needs.
00:48And Ducard is even more relevant, because he's an actual comic character.
00:52Then, the rug gets pulled.
00:54You're not Ra's al Ghul.
00:57I watched him die.
00:59But, is Ra's al Ghul immortal?
01:04Are his methods supernatural?
01:07Ducard is Ra's al Ghul, the true mastermind all along, and the man Bruce believed to be Ra's was merely
01:13a decoy.
01:14Liam Neeson's suave performance suddenly takes on a menacing new dimension.
01:18Everything we'd accepted about his guidance becomes sinister manipulation, giving it a very different experience during a rewatch.
01:24Justice is balance.
01:26You burned my house and left me for dead.
01:31Consider us even.
01:33Number 9.
01:33Hush Revealed as Tommy Elliot.
01:35Jeff Loeb and Jim Lee's Hush storyline kept Raiders guessing relentlessly throughout its 12-issue run.
01:41The mysterious bandage villain orchestrating chaos across Gotham seemed like it could be almost anyone, which was precisely the point.
01:47God that will pay 10 times what you made today.
01:50Think of all the fertilizer you could buy.
01:54I've even brought you a gift.
01:55When Thomas Elliot, Bruce Wayne's childhood friend, who was assumed to have been killed, steps forward as the man beneath
02:01those hush wrappings, the betrayal lands with tremendous force.
02:05Especially when Thomas confesses that he'd always been this evil, as he attempted to murder his own parents when he
02:09was a child for their money.
02:11Unlike many villains driven by abstract ideology, Hush is fueled by deeply personal hatred, as his resentment is rooted in
02:17a twisted childhood that mirrors Bruce's own trauma in unsettling ways.
02:21Soon, Batman. Very soon.
02:25Number 8.
02:26Onslaught is Professor X and Magneto's creation.
02:29Few Marvel Comics events in the 1990s generated more genuine shock than the unmasking of Onslaught.
02:35This titanic, seemingly unstoppable psychic entity, had been lurking in the background for months before readers and the pages mutants
02:42finally learned the devastating truth.
02:43Onslaught was born from the darkest corners of Charles Xavier's subconscious, fused with Magneto's rage, after Xavier psychically lobotomized him.
02:52The idea that the X-Men's beloved founder harbored something this catastrophically dangerous was a gut punch to longtime fans,
02:59and to Jean too, when Onslaught showed her Xavier's love for her.
03:02It forced her reckoning with Xavier's moral complexity, exposing the suppressed fury and hypocrisy lurking beneath his peaceful exterior.
03:09Number 7.
03:10Miranda Tate is Talia Al Ghul.
03:12Throughout 2012's The Dark Knight Rises, Marion Cotillard's Miranda Tate appears to be exactly what Batman needs her to be.
03:19A sophisticated, trustworthy ally who brings both warmth and financial credibility to Bruce Wayne's world.
03:24Ideal.
03:25Bruce, if you want to save the world, you have to start trusting it.
03:30I'm trusting you.
03:31Doesn't count, you have no choice.
03:33She seems almost deliberately unremarkable among the film's more theatrical characters.
03:37That's exactly the trap.
03:38When she plunges a blade into Batman's side, and reveals herself as Talia Al Ghul, Ra's Al Ghul's daughter, everything
03:44snaps into focus with Caped Crusader and the viewers.
03:48I climbed out of the pit.
03:56I found my father.
04:00And brought him back to exact terrible vengeance.
04:03Her intimacy with Bruce wasn't affection.
04:05It was calculated vengeance.
04:07While some fans debate the execution, the thematic power is undeniable.
04:11Batman was deceived by the legacy of the very man who once shaped him.
04:14Don't kill him.
04:16I want him to feel the heat.
04:19Feel the fire of 12 million souls.
04:22You fail.
04:23Number 6.
04:24Hal Jordan is Parallax.
04:26For years, comic readers struggled to accept what happened to Hal Jordan during the story Emerald Twilight.
04:31One of DC's most iconic heroes seemingly went mad after Coast City's destruction by slaughtering his fellow Green Lanterns and
04:38embracing villainy as Parallax.
04:39It felt confusing.
04:40Well, as Geoff Johns revealed in Green Lantern Rebirth, there was more to the tale.
04:45Parallax was actually an ancient fear entity that had possessed Hal, using him as a vessel for cosmic destruction.
04:50Alongside redeeming a beloved character, the reveal also recontextualized years of controversial storytelling, transforming apparent character assassination into something far
04:59more sophisticated.
05:00While it also redeemed Hal, the twist of what Parallax was also expanded the Green Lantern mythos even more.
05:05If you want to be a Green Lantern, then we have the perfect place for you to increase your will.

05:19And really?
05:24Just that I'm a regular person.
05:26Like you.
05:28Number 5.
05:29The Thunderbolts Twist
05:30When Marvel Comics introduced the Thunderbolts in 1997, they presented them as a fresh, exciting team of new heroes stepping
05:36up while the Avengers were absent.
05:39Thunderbolts!
05:40Strike!
05:42Readers embraced them enthusiastically.
05:44Then, the final page of that very first issue detonated everything.
05:48These weren't heroes at all.
05:49They were the masters of evil in disguise, led by Baron Zemo, running an elaborate long con on the entire
05:55Marvel Universe.
05:56Can't wait to see the look on Captain America's face.
05:59When he realizes he shook hands with Baron Zemo.
06:03And he fought alongside the masters of evil.
06:06Writer Kurt Busiek had kept the secret so tightly that even most Marvel editors didn't know.
06:11What makes this extraordinary isn't just the shock.
06:14It's that Busiek immediately asked a deeper question in the aftermath.
06:17What happens when villains pretending to be heroes start actually wanting to become them?
06:21But you will see us again.
06:23As real heroes.
06:24And showing who we really are.
06:26That, I believe.
06:28Number 4.
06:29Ozymandias in The Watchmen
06:31Nothing quite prepares you for it.
06:33Even on a reread slash rewatch.
06:37Gentlemen, welcome.
06:40Adrian, we know everything.
06:43Then what's there to discuss, Dan?
06:45In the comics, Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons constructed Watchmen as a ruthless deconstruction of superhero mythology.
06:51And Adrian Veidt, the world's smartest man, and the retired hero, Ozymandias, stands at the center of its most devastating
06:58revelation.
06:59He orchestrated the murder of the comedian.
07:01He manipulated Dr. Manhattan.
07:03He killed millions to prevent billions from dying in nuclear war.
07:06What's this?
07:08Everyone's gonna know what you've done.
07:10Well then, by exposing me, you would sacrifice the peace that they died for today.
07:17Peace based on a lie.
07:18But peace, nonetheless, is right.
07:23And he did it all 11 minutes before the heroes arrived to stop him.
07:27The chilling genius of this reveal isn't that Byte isn't conventionally evil.
07:30Instead, he believes absolutely in what he's done.
07:33Moore forces readers to sit with an uncomfortable question.
07:35Was he wrong?
07:38You understand, don't you?
07:41Without condoning.
07:43Or condemning.
07:50I understand.
07:52Number 3.
07:53The Winter Soldier Revealed as Bucky Barnes.
07:56For decades, Bucky Barnes' death was treated as one of Marvel's sacred, untouchable tragedies.
08:01Bucky!
08:06Hang on!
08:09Grab my hand!
08:12Like Uncle Ben, Bucky's demise was left untouched.
08:16Then, Ed Brubaker obliterated that convention in the comics in spectacular fashion, which later flowed into the MCU.
08:23He introduced the Winter Soldier, a deadly Soviet-trained assassin with a cybernetic arm
08:27who'd been methodically dismantling intelligence networks.
08:33Bucky?
08:34Who the hell is Bucky?
08:36However, he was soon revealed to be Bucky,
08:38who'd been brainwashed, cryogenically preserved,
08:41and weaponized by the very enemies he once fought beside Captain America against.
08:45The horror of the reveal is multi-layered.
08:47Steve Rogers must confront not just the loss of his partner,
08:50but the corruption of his memory,
08:52and the devastation of trying to coax Bucky out of the Winter Soldier.
08:59Please don't make me do this.
09:01Number 2.
09:02Red Hood Revealed as Jason Todd.
09:04In 1988, the world of DC Comics changed forever
09:07with the brutal demise of Jason Todd, Batman's Robin, at the hands of the Joker.
09:11That looked like it really hurt.
09:14In the aftermath, Batman was haunted by this devastating tragedy.
09:18Yet, nearly two decades later, a violent, brutal new Red Hood,
09:21the former identity of the Joker, emerged in Gotham,
09:24who seemingly mocked Batman's code while proving disturbingly effective.
09:28Yes, you can't stop crime.
09:30That's what you never understood.
09:32I'm controlling it.
09:34You want to rule them by fear.
09:36But what do you do with the ones who aren't afraid?
09:38I'm doing what you won't.
09:39I'm taking them out.
09:41While Bruce suspected he was behind the mask,
09:43the confirmation that it was a resurrected Jason was a gut punch,
09:47especially when Jason had been radicalized
09:49and was furious not just at his killer,
09:51but at the man who never avenged him with lethal methods.
09:53Why on God's Earth, is he still alive?
10:00Before we continue, be sure to check out WatchMojo's 24-hour livestream.

10:07Always on, always live.
10:09Are you not entertained?
10:12Number one.
10:13Norman Osborn is the Green Goblin.
10:15Arguably, everything on this list owes something to this moment.
10:19How did you say that happened?
10:22And, bike messenger, knock me down.
10:26In 1966, within Amazing Spider-Man number 39,
10:30Stan Lee and artist John Romita Sr.
10:32did something that had simply never been done before in superhero comics.
10:36This legendary duo revealed that Spider-Man's most fearsome nemesis,
10:40the Green Goblin,
10:40was someone Peter Parker already knew rather well.
10:43Norman Osborn, the wealthy industrialist
10:45and father of Peter's best friend, Harry,
10:47had been hiding beneath that grotesque mask all along.
10:51Peter! Stop! Stop!
10:54It's me!
11:03Mr. Osborn.
11:05The personal dimension was seismic.
11:07This wasn't a random monster.
11:08It was someone embedded in Peter's civilian life.
11:11That collision of hero and villain across both identities
11:14became the blueprint for nearly every great supervillain reveal that followed.
11:18Give me your hand.
11:21Believe in me as I believed in you.
11:24What other iconic supervillain I'm asking did we miss from the list?
