00:00The easy way to enjoy lobster is back at McDonald's, the delicious McLobster sandwich made from 100% lobster meat.
00:06Welcome to Ms. Mojo.
00:08And today, we're looking at fast food items from the 90s that were later discontinued, remaining widely unavailable to the masses.
00:15Fun for you chicken fans too, cause my new popcorn chicken's out at KFC.
00:21Number 20. Italian Sausage Sandwich, Burger King.
00:25In the late 70s, Burger King started experimenting with a variety of specialty sandwiches, helping to attract older consumers.
00:32This trend continued into the early 90s, with the Italian Sausage Sandwich being a standout.
00:37Get three great-tasting international chicken sandwiches with your favorite toppings, French, American, and Italian style.
00:44Hitting the menu in 1992, this grilled sandwich came in three variations.
00:49You could get it with just onions and peppers.
00:51Although, if you're a true Italian, you'd have the sausage served Parmigiana style with a mix of marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese.
00:58Burger King?
00:59Yeah, it's a flame-broiled Italian sausage sandwich with mozzarella cheese and marinara sauce, or with peppers and onions.
01:06You don't say.
01:07Of course, you could ask for all the toppings, which we think was the way to go.
01:11It might not have been authentic Italian cuisine, but for those craving a fast food fix and a taste of Italy,
01:17BK knew how to make the sausage.
01:19This is for you. You try it.
01:21This is the Italian experience.
01:23I'm not saying this sandwich is great, but I saw Mona Lisa smiling.
01:27It's like a slice of Italy.
01:28It's your way right away.
01:30Number 19, the McJordan special, McDonald's.
01:34Michael Jordan appeared in some of the most memorable McDonald's commercials, playing Larry Bird for his Big Mac.
01:40It only makes sense that Mickey D's would name a value meal after the NBA All-Star.
01:43Along with a beverage and fries, the main course was a quarter-pound patty with cheese, mustard, and onions.
01:49Although the barbecue sauce and bacon were what truly made it.
01:53It's some awfully good eatin'.
01:55That's why it's been repeatin'.
01:57The McJordan special is back in town.
02:02The burger didn't just bear Jordan's name.
02:04He played a hand in cooking up the concept, suggesting a burger that reminded him of the ones his family made growing up.
02:10The McJordan special is back in town.
02:13For a limited time, get this button free with a McJordan special combo at McDonald's today.
02:19It was primarily sold in Chicago, but would branch out to other locations before being retired.
02:24Echoing the commercials, its removal from the menu had us singing the blues.
02:28Like I said, mmm.
02:30A quarter pound of beef with cheese, smoked bacon, and tangy barbecue sauce.
02:34The McJordan special.
02:35Talk about a crowd pleaser.
02:36Number 18, The Dominator.
02:39Domino's.
02:40Pizza chains were kind of obsessed with making their pies bigger in the 90s.
02:44A pizza measuring contest, if you will.
02:46Domino's overcompensated a tad with The Dominator, which aimed to out-pizza the Hut at an astonishing 30 inches.
02:54The new pepperoni Dominator is the biggest of them all.
02:57The price is spectacular, so come and pick up the Dominator at a Domino's near you.
03:02Although longer than the pies that Pizza Hut and Little Caesars had, The Dominator's defining feature was also the issue.
03:08The average delivery person couldn't fit the pizza into their car, so The Dominator was a pickup exclusive.
03:14Customers who didn't drive an SUV quickly realized that they didn't think this through.
03:19Call Domino's now and get your extra-large Dominator pizza.
03:23Get the door.
03:24It's Domino's.
03:25While The Dominator didn't dominate, 30 slices of $9 to $11 was a deal that not even the Noid could ruin.
03:31Deliver pan pizza.
03:33Great.
03:35I love the crust.
03:36Oh, and the toppings and all that cheese.
03:38And I didn't have to pick it up.
03:40The Dominator name has since been reused, but the pizzas shrank significantly.
03:44Number 17, The Colossus Burger.
03:47Jack in the Box.
03:48Making bigger burgers was another trend that went into overdrive during this era.
03:52Jack in the Box could satisfy a giant's appetite with The Colossus Burger, which included three
03:57varieties of sliced cheese and two quarter pounder patties.
04:00Not enough meat for you?
04:01Don't worry.
04:02The Colossus Burger came with not one, not two, but eight strips of bacon.
04:07You must have it.
04:09It's The Colossus from Jack in the Box.
04:12You also might be familiar with Jack's Bacon Ultimate Cheeseburger, which essentially followed
04:17the same recipe.
04:18Big, juicy, junior, ultimate cheeseburger from Jack in the Box.
04:21Just 99 cents.
04:23While that burger still exists, it's been scaled down.
04:26The two patties and cheese remain, but it only comes with a measly three slices of bacon now.
04:31We used to be a proper country.
04:33Oh well.
04:33We suppose our arteries will thank us for eating healthier.
04:36It's The Colossus from Jack in the Box.
04:38Two quarter pound patties, three kinds of cheese, eight pieces of bacon.
04:42The Colossus from Jack in the Box.
04:44Number 16, Monterey Ranch Chicken Sandwich.
04:47Wendy's.
04:48Fast food is known for giving us gimmicky items, especially during this decade.
04:53Sometimes though, fast food finds a winning combination in sheer simplicity.
04:57A chicken breast with melted Monterey Jack cheese might not sound like anything astonishing.
05:02If you tried Wendy's Monterey Ranch Chicken Sandwich though, you'd know it was something
05:06special.
05:07This crispy, creamy sandwich surfaced a couple of times throughout the 90s, although it was
05:11always a limited time offer.
05:13It's the sandwich everybody loves.
05:15Dave, you think we have enough?
05:18You're right.
05:19Order more.
05:20Wendy's Monterey Ranch Chicken Sandwich.
05:22Come and get it.
05:24After a dry spell in the 2000s, the Monterey Ranch Chicken Sandwich made a mini comeback at
05:28the top of the following decade.
05:30Alas, it wasn't meant to last.
05:32You can still get a chicken sandwich with ranch dressing and bacon, but you'll have to
05:36bring your own Monterey Jack.
05:37What's the next question?
05:38Do you like it?
05:39I sampled it.
05:40I loved it.
05:40I'm an American.
05:41It's back.
05:42Wendy's Monterey Ranch Chicken Sandwich.
05:44Dave, don't lift you down.
05:46Number 15.
05:47BK Dinner Baskets.
05:49Burger King.
05:50We're regulars at the drive-thru window, but when was the last time you ate a meal inside
05:54a fast food location?
05:56For some, it was back in the 90s when they introduced BK Dinner Baskets.
06:00Dinner Baskets?
06:00It's about that time.
06:02Chicken.
06:03Steak.
06:04Whopper.
06:05Shrimp.
06:05In an attempt to give Burger King the ambiance of a more traditional sit-down restaurant,
06:10the chain began serving meals in basket form.
06:13Patrons could fill their basket with either chicken, shrimp, steak, a Whopper, or even
06:17the sorely-missed meatloaf sandwich.
06:20Side options included fries, baked potato, salad, or coleslaw.
06:24These are actual people eating actual dinner baskets at Burger King.
06:28They gave us our drinks and we sat down and minutes later they had everything on the table.
06:31Of course, the dinner baskets are mainly remembered for two things.
06:35One, the complimentary popcorn that came to the table.
06:38And two, those commercials featuring Elaine's mimbo boyfriend.
06:42We're glad Tony rebounded from that rock climbing accident.
06:44Tell us what's the chicken.
06:46Teddy's doing shrimp.
06:47Abe hasn't made up his mind yet.
06:48But you better hurry up because table service is only four to eight.
06:52They're having it their way.
06:53Number 14.
06:55McStuffins.
06:56McDonald's.
06:57We sadly can't include the McPizza here since it was introduced in the 80s.
07:01McDonald's Pizza.
07:02La la la la la.
07:03McDonald's Pizza.
07:04A pizza won't be later.
07:06However, McDonald's created a similar item in 1993.
07:10McDonald's' response to the rise of Hot Pockets, McStuffins consisted of French bread with a selection of fillings.
07:16The pepperoni pizza best complemented the baguette.
07:18Although you could also order it with barbecue chicken, Philly beef and cheese, or teriyaki chicken.
07:24Despite being hyped as the greatest thing since sliced bread, the McStuffins barely lasted a year.
07:29Introducing the greatest thing since sliced bread.
07:32McStuffins?
07:33It's hard for a McDonald's product to catch on if it doesn't have a meat patty.
07:37If McDonald's wants to bring a little more variety to their menu, though, maybe they should give McStuffins another shot.
07:43They could even get Jim Gaffigan to do a commercial.
07:45Is your Hot Pocket cold in the middle?
07:48It's frozen.
07:49But it can be served boiling lava hot.
07:54Will it burn my mouth?
07:55It'll destroy your mouth.
07:57Number 13.
07:58Popcorn Chicken.
07:59KFC.
08:00Eugene Gagliardi, the food technologist behind Steak'em frozen meat, is also known for creating popcorn chicken.
08:07The colonel could never resist an item like that.
08:10Gagliardi reportedly sold his recipe to KFC for $33 million in 1992.
08:15Made of boneless white meat, KFC's popcorn chicken went off in our mouths like flavorful firecrackers.
08:21KFC popcorn chicken.
08:23All white meat chicken.
08:24Crunchy on the outside, juicy on the inside.
08:26The popcorn chicken popped up in the menu sporadically throughout the 90s and early 2000s.
08:31Since then, KFC has phased out their popcorn chicken in favor of chicken nuggets.
08:35Nuggets.
08:36Hip it.
08:37Crunch it.
08:38Meat nuggets go too hard.
08:39You need some nuggets.
08:40We know what you're thinking.
08:42Aren't they basically the same thing?
08:43A true finger licker knows better.
08:45Not only do they taste different, but it's much harder, and less satisfying, cramming a handful of bulky nuggets into your mouth.
08:52Crunchy.
08:53Juicy.
08:53KFC popcorn chicken is back.
08:55Try an individual size for only $199 or a family size for only $699.
08:58Number 12.
08:59The Triple Deckeroni.
09:01Pizza Hut.
09:02Stuffed crust is one thing, but what if Pizza Hut stuffed their pizza with more pizza?
09:06That's the best way to describe the chain's triple-decker pizza, aka the Triple Deckeroni.
09:11According to the ads, this hulking pie was comprised of 90 pepperoni pieces, 6 cheeses, and 2 crusts.
09:19How was this accomplished?
09:20Essentially, they took one pepperoni pizza and put another on top.
09:24New Pizza Hut Triple Deckeroni pizza.
09:2690 pepperoni pieces, 6 cheeses, 2 crusts, 1 hellacious taste.
09:30The Triple Deckeroni was short-lived.
09:32The same could probably be said for anyone who tried to eat a whole one in a single sitting.
09:36Nevertheless, if the idea sounds enticing to you, it doesn't seem that hard to replicate.
09:41Just take two slices of thin crust pepperoni pizza and stack them.
09:45Shouldn't it be called a double-deckeroni, though?
09:47It's two decks.
09:48Blend hidden deep inside two thin crusts.
09:52Wow, what a pizza.
09:53Only $9.99.
09:55Number 11.
09:56Mc Lobster.
09:57McDonald's.
09:57For a limited time, the Mc Lobster sandwich is ashore at McDonald's.
10:01Filled with Atlantic Canadian lobster meat and crispy lettuce on a fresh bun.
10:05Lobster at McDonald's?
10:07No, you didn't dream it.
10:08For people with expensive tastes but limited funds,
10:11the Mc Lobster only cost $3.99 when it rolled around in the early 90s.
10:16McDonald's acquired real lobster from American and Canadian waters,
10:19although they maintained a low price by using cheaper meats from the claw, knuckle, and leg.
10:24That's what insiders call CKL meat.
10:26It was otherwise a straightforward lobster roll,
10:29but this remains one of the most unique menu items in McDonald's history.
10:33Served on a toast to one?
10:37We'll take two.
10:38It's occasionally resurfaced throughout the past 30 years.
10:42Since lobster is a seasonal cuisine,
10:44it was always unlikely that the Mc Lobster would be a permanent fixture.
10:48Still, we wish McDonald's could at least give it the McRib treatment.
10:51Initially back, McDonald's announcing that that cult favorite item will be offered nationwide.
10:56Number 10.
11:00Cine Minis, Burger King.
11:02Morning.
11:03Here's a better idea.
11:04A fresh-baked biscuit sandwich or heart of the bun Cine Minis, now just $0.99 each.
11:08In 1967, Burger King fell under the ownership of Pillsbury,
11:12which in turn was acquired by Grand Metropolitan in 1989.
11:16Despite the corporate connections, it wasn't until 1998 that BK and Pillsbury collaborated on Cine Minis.
11:23Despite being miniature, these bite-sized breakfast items encompassed the best part of a cinnamon roll,
11:28the heart.
11:29Dunking these bad boys into an icing container was a satisfying,
11:33not to mention delicious, way to start your morning.
11:35With tasty icing you put on your way.
11:38Right now, just $0.99.
11:40It's what happens when Burger King and Pillsbury get together for breakfast.
11:45You can imagine our disappointment that fateful day in 2012 when we pulled up to the BK drive-thru
11:50and learned that these drops from heaven were no longer available.
11:53While the Cine Minis briefly returned in 2018 and were recently made available in limited capacity,
11:59they need to become menu mainstays again.
12:02When you have it your way,
12:03It just tastes better.
12:04Number 9.
12:05The Double Decker Taco, Taco Bell.
12:08Producing the nacho cheese double-decker taco at Taco Bell.
12:11That's big!
12:12On the heels of Mo' Better Blues, Jungle Fever, and Malcolm X,
12:16Spike Lee gave us arguably his finest work from the 90s,
12:19this commercial for the double-decker taco.
12:21It might sound like we're joking, and to an extent we are.
12:24When you wrap a soft flour tortilla in a crunchy taco shell with refried beans in the middle, though,
12:30the results deserve a director of Spike's stature.
12:32Speaking of stature, Lee brought along Shaquille O'Neal and Hakeem Olajuwon
12:36to emphasize just how towering this fusion of flavors and sounds was.
12:40You guys are new in this.
12:41Buy your own!
12:42Buy your own!
12:43Following its introduction in 1995,
12:45the double-decker taco became a permanent staple.
12:48And by permanent, we mean it vanished from the menu in 2019,
12:51only seeing a couple of limited runs since.
12:54So, guys, do you approve?
13:01I'll take that as a yes.
13:03Number 8.
13:044-inch round sandwiches, Subway.
13:06Subway is synonymous with the footlong,
13:09although not everyone has the appetite to conquer 12 inches in one sitting.
13:13Even the 6 inch is more than some can handle.
13:15For those looking for a slightly smaller option,
13:18Subway served 4-inch sandwiches in the 90s.
13:20They're in for a shock when they see our new 79-cent round sandwiches.
13:24It wasn't just the size that made these sandwiches stand out.
13:27It was the shape.
13:28They were round, which might sound standard for any other eatery.
13:32At Subway, though, this was like walking into a parallel universe.
13:36If one didn't quite fill you up,
13:37the 79-cent price tag made seconds and thirds irresistible.
13:4179 cents?
13:43Not since you were a little kid has your lunch money jingled.
13:46They were also ideal for younger patrons,
13:48briefly replacing the 6-inch on the kids' pack menu.
13:51Their lifespan wasn't nearly long enough,
13:53but a comeback would bring things full circle.
13:56I eat three every day to help keep me strong.
13:59Number 7.
14:00Colonel's Rotisserie Gold, KFC.
14:02I thought it was just excellent.
14:04Incredibly tasty, incredibly juicy.
14:06The Colonel's Rotisserie Gold Chicken at KFC.
14:09KFC was already the first name in Kentucky Fried Chicken.
14:12We mean, it's literally in the name?
14:14I love KFC.
14:15Having enjoyed such success with crispy poultry,
14:18it made sense for the Colonel to experiment with rotisserie.
14:21Colonel's Rotisserie Gold was every bit as appetizing as it sounds,
14:25blending special spices and herbs before being slow-roasted to perfection,
14:29as the ads read.
14:30Introducing marinated, slow-roasted Colonel's Rotisserie Gold.
14:34KFC invested $100 million into marketing the product.
14:38It seemed to pay off,
14:39as sales reportedly exceeded $100 million by October 1993.
14:43However, rotisserie gold items were reportedly, quote,
14:47a nightmare to execute,
14:48and sales apparently weren't high enough to justify the headache.
14:52It wouldn't be the last time KFC tested out grilled and roasted chicken,
14:56but we all know the gold standard.
14:58This finger's looking good.
14:59Number six, Big Big Bucket of Spaghetti,
15:02Little Caesars.
15:03Two words define Little Caesars.
15:06Pizza, pizza.
15:06Pizza, pizza.
15:07Okay, that was technically one word repeated twice,
15:10but for a brief window in the early 90s,
15:12this chain also tried to make spaghetti spaghetti happen.
15:15While there was a side option,
15:17the best way to consume spaghetti is in bucket form.
15:20The Big Big Bucket of Spaghetti could feed your family for just under $10.
15:24The best part is that after slurping up every last ounce of pasta
15:28and licking the marinara sauce dry,
15:30customers still had a giant bucket they could use for storage.
15:33Two big pan pieces with more cheese,
15:35more pepperoni,
15:3624 slices,
15:37or get a family-sized bucket of spaghetti with meat sauce.
15:40Now that's what we call more bang for your buck and your bucket.
15:44We guess those buckets are collector's items now,
15:46as they're all that remains of this menu item.
15:48Little Caesars introduces spaghetti spaghetti,
15:51two free side orders of spaghetti and two pizzas with any topping,
15:54all for $8.98.
15:55Number 5.
15:57The McHot Dog, McDonald's.
15:59Hot dogs are hot again,
16:00and they're new at McDonald's.
16:03Hot dogs!
16:04Richard and Maurice McDonald's started with a hot dog stand
16:07before shifting their focus to burgers.
16:09Ray Kroc eventually took control of the McDonald's empire,
16:12although few were more apprehensive about hot dogs than him.
16:15Kroc was iffy about the ingredients in hot dogs,
16:18believing such a product wasn't up to McDonald's standards.
16:21I like the sound of it.
16:23It sounded wholesome,
16:25and it sounded genuine,
16:27you know?
16:28I don't like these,
16:29hmm,
16:31gimmick-type names.
16:33About a decade after Kroc's death,
16:35McDonald's went against the founder's judgment,
16:37launching the McHot Dog in 1995.
16:40Seemingly proving Kroc right,
16:42the McHot Dog didn't last long,
16:44but the item gained something of a cult following,
16:46so much so that it can still supposedly be found
16:49at select central Pennsylvania locations
16:51and on Japan's breakfast menu.
16:53McDonald's might be a burger joint first and foremost,
16:56but we say throw this dog a bone.
16:58Hot dogs are hot again,
17:00and they're new at McDonald's.
17:01Hot dog!
17:02Number 4.
17:03The BK Broiler,
17:05Burger King.
17:06Although chicken burgers aren't anything new,
17:08they've reached new levels of popularity as of late,
17:11spearheaded by customers seeking healthier options.
17:13Burger King of all places was ahead of the curve,
17:16launching their first chicken burger in 1990.
17:19Burger King introduces a tasty new chicken sandwich
17:21that breaks the rules,
17:22cause it's flame-broiled all-white meat chicken,
17:25with lettuce, tomato, and ranch sauce
17:27on an oat bran bun.
17:28The BK Broiler stood out at a time
17:30when most chicken fast food products were fried.
17:32This broiled chicken sandwich presented a leaner alternative,
17:36and a mouth-watering one at that.
17:38Despite initially selling well,
17:39the BK Broiler was phased out in favor of the Chicken Whopper in 2002.
17:44So good, it had to be called a Whopper.
17:46You gotta have the new Chicken Whopper.
17:49Burger King went on to produce other grilled chicken products,
17:52but if they're gonna give Chick-fil-A a run for their money,
17:54it might be time to finally bring the BK Broiler back.
17:58Introducing the BK Broiler.
18:00For a chicken sandwich with that flame-broiled taste,
18:03sometimes you've gotta break the rules.
18:05Number 3.
18:07Fresh Stuffed Pitas,
18:08Wendy's Wendy's Fresh Stuffed Pitas
18:10in four mouth-watering varieties.
18:13May I pick your order, please?
18:14I think I'll have a pita.
18:16Wendy's Fresh Stuffed Pitas.
18:17Feel good?
18:18Look good.
18:19While we're on the subject of alternatives to red meat,
18:21Wendy's added Fresh Stuffed Pitas to their menu in 1997.
18:25Options included Chicken Caesar,
18:27Classic Greek,
18:28Garden Veggie,
18:29and Ranch Chicken.
18:30The pitas were promoted as salads in a sandwich
18:32for, as founder Dave Thomas put it,
18:35those, quote,
18:36whose mobile lifestyles require more portable, convenient foods.
18:39We're introducing Fresh Stuffed Pitas at Wendy's.
18:42Yeah?
18:42Now Wendy's has pitas in four delicious varieties,
18:45like Garden Ranch Chicken,
18:47overflowing with crisp vegetables,
18:48and big chunks of tender chicken.
18:50Really fill them up.
18:50The Fresh Stuffed Pitas were suddenly,
18:52and sadly,
18:53removed from Wendy's menu at the turn of the century.
18:56Despite only being available for three years,
18:59fans could still taste those fresh ingredients in their mouths.
19:02To this date,
19:03there's a vocal online community
19:04pleading with Wendy's to give their pitas a second chance.
19:07Why not try something different
19:08by revisiting something old,
19:10yet fresh?
19:11Your pitas are dreamy, Dave.
19:13I thought you'd like them.
19:14Number 2.
19:15Arch Deluxe, McDonald's.
19:17The new Arch Deluxe with bacon.
19:19October's taste of the month at McDonald's.
19:21Wanting to bring in an older demographic during the mid-90s,
19:24McDonald's embarked on what was said to be
19:26the fast food industry's
19:27most expensive advertising campaign ever.
19:30The product behind this costly endeavor?
19:32The Arch Deluxe.
19:33Quote,
19:34The burger with a grown-up taste.
19:36The stone-ground mustard sauce.
19:38Mmm.
19:38The soft, comforting potato roll.
19:40I'm in the zone.
19:41All layered together in one symphony of taste.
19:44The taste wasn't the issue,
19:46as this mixture of beef, bacon, cheese, veggies, and sauce
19:49appealed to those with a more sophisticated palate,
19:52by McDonald's standards.
19:53The problem was that ad campaign,
19:56which was reported to be between $150 million and $300 million.
20:00Even with a then-unknown Jessica Biel popping up in one of the commercials,
20:04the Arch Deluxe didn't catch on as McDonald's had hoped.
20:07Arch Deluxe?
20:08Mmm.

20:14If you're going to spend that kind of money,
20:15maybe it's better to target adults and kids.

20:34Give Pizza Hut credit.
20:45They've never been afraid to experiment.
20:47Sometimes this leads to long-lasting staples like their stuffed crust.
20:51Other innovations now exclusively live in our memories.
20:54The Bigfoot pizza certainly left a lasting impression with its taste,
20:57size, and that commercial featuring Haley Joel Osment.
21:00Huge, huge, large, astronomically big.
21:03Big would be an understatement.
21:05Pizza Hut's answer to Little Caesars,
21:07this 21-slice rectangular pie could feed a party at 12 inches by 24 inches.
21:12The Hut went all in on Bigfoot,
21:14not only spending millions on marketing,
21:16but also offering customers free blockbuster video rentals and HBO trials.
21:22Bigfoot!
21:23Two square feet of pizza and a tasty new crust, all for $10.99.
21:26Like the Arch Deluxe, Pizza Hut bit off more than they could chew.
21:30The Bigfoot pizza thus fell into the stuff of legend.
21:33Although we can only hope it resurfaces someday.
21:37Bigfoot!
21:38Pizza Hut!
