00:00What's for lunch? Countless school children gazing at the mystery meat on their trays.
00:05Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most nostalgic staples
00:10that filled our trays, fueled our afternoons, and cemented themselves into childhood history.
00:15They're kind of delicious.
00:17I like it too.
00:18I liked them. I'd buy them.
00:20They're really good.
00:21Number 10. Nacho Cheese and Dips.
00:23Whether served alongside a warm, oversized pretzel or dumped unceremoniously over a bed of round tortilla chips,
00:31school cafeteria cheese was pure magic.
00:34This wasn't artisanal cheddar.
00:36It was a glowing, molten reservoir of highly processed, mildly spiced orange liquid.
00:41And those who serve those meals, like Louisa Smithson, say for some kids, this may be all they eat.
00:47It possessed the miraculous ability to make literally anything edible,
00:51from soggy vegetables to questionable tortilla chips.
00:55What is that?
00:57That, my friend, is a magical combination of corn flour, dehydrated cheese solids,
01:02BHA, BHT, and good old MSG, aka the chips. Nacho cheese flavor.
01:08Students routinely traded away their entire dessert just to get a second plastic tub of this liquid gold.
01:14No matter how messy things got, dipping your way through lunch was an absolute highlight of the school week.
01:20Cheddar, cheddar whizzies!
01:26Number 9. Ice Cream Cups with Wooden Spoons.
01:30Nothing capped off a stressful math test quite like those tiny paper-wrapped ice cream cups.
01:35Operation Hoodsy Cups started in 2010, serving ice cream from the months of July to September.
01:42Half vanilla, half chocolate, these frozen treats were an absolute institution.
01:47However, the real hero, or villain, of the experience was the flat wooden paddle that served as a spoon.
01:53It imparted a distinct papery flavor to every bite, requiring a delicate balance of scraping speed
02:00before the whole thing melted into a lukewarm puddle.
02:03Still, whenever these made an appearance on the cafeteria line, you knew it was going to be a good day.
02:09When somebody's five years old, it's collectively all these strategies that make Boston a special place.
02:15Number 8. Jell-O.
02:17Wobbly, vibrant, and utterly indestructible, fruit-flavored gelatin was a tray staple for generations.
02:24Whether served in a clear plastic cup or cut into dense, portable squares,
02:28Jell-O provided instant entertainment alongside a burst of pure sugar.
02:32Of course, there is something to be said from being a little selfish.
02:36Want a little something sweet? I can go for something, Jell-O.
02:39It didn't matter if it was neon red cherry or bright green lime.
02:43Slurping down this translucent dessert was a rite of passage.
02:46Just mix it with water and let it sit.
02:54Can we have some French over?
02:56Yeah, can we?
02:57Some cafeterias even tried to sneak suspended bits of canned fruit inside.
03:01But students quickly learned to navigate around the healthy bits to get straight to the sweet stuff.
03:07At the nose, sir.
03:08G-E-L-L-O.
03:11Number 7. Mashed Potatoes with Gravy.
03:14Scooped with an ice cream scoop and smothered in a mysterious, highly salted brown liquid,
03:20school mashed potatoes were pure comfort food.
03:22Well, that should give you time to mow the lawn.
03:24How would you like some light, fluffy mashed potato?
03:27Yes, please.
03:28Sure, the texture leaned heavily toward the instant flake side of the spectrum, but nobody was complaining.
03:34That dark, glossy gravy acted as a culinary bridge, uniting the potatoes, turkey slices, and whatever random vegetables happened to
03:43be on your tray.
03:44Steaming hot and perpetually salty, a double scoop of these spuds was the ultimate defense against a freezing winter afternoon
03:51in the school gymnasium.
03:52Making the mashed potatoes and spooning the mashed potatoes into the cups.
03:57The kids had Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, salad.
04:03Number 6. A Sad Hamburger.
04:05We all remembered the classic cafeteria burger.
04:08A thin gray patty resting inside a foil wrapper that somehow trapped entirely too much steam.
04:15We recognize there have been a few instances where we didn't meet the expectations of all of our students and
04:20families and have carefully investigated each situation.
04:24There's nothing we take more seriously than the health and safety of our students.
04:29The bun was always perpetually soggy, and the meat itself was an exercise in culinary mystery.
04:35Yet, despite its total lack of seasoning and sad presentation, it remained a legendary staple.
04:42Sometimes there's a wait in the food lines, but that's where most student complaints stop.
04:46The cafeteria workers get high marks, so too does the food.
04:50Okay, tastes alright. It's real good.
04:54Armed with a few packets of ketchup, mustard, and perhaps a rogue slice of American cheese,
04:59students transformed this tragic sandwich into a beloved midday ritual.
05:04It wasn't gourmet, but it got the job done.
05:07I think the burgers are really good today, and I'm happy to enjoy a homegrown meal that the school provided
05:14for us.
05:15Number 5. Fruit on the Side.
05:17No lunch tray was complete without a token healthy offering.
05:21Usually taking the form of a single, slightly bruised red apple, a brown banana,
05:26or a tiny plastic cup of syrup-drenched fruit cocktail.
05:29And one must be at least half cup total of fruit or vegetable in order to be a complete, reimbursable
05:37meal.
05:38While most kids ignored them in favor of carbohydrates and sugar,
05:42these fruits were the unsung heroes of lunch trading.
05:45A sweet peach slice could be leveraged for a potato chip,
05:48while an unwanted pear quarter usually sat forgotten until the end of the day.
05:53One selection must be at least half cup fruit component, optional vegetable substitute allowed.
06:00Love them or leave them, they provided that obligatory splash of color.
06:04Food service providers could dial back servings of fruit at breakfast,
06:08cut back on grains to make room for meats and meat alternatives,
06:11and relax current vegetable requirements.
06:14Number 4. French toast sticks.
06:16Who says breakfast can't be served at noon?
06:20Golden brown, dusted with cinnamon sugar, and built specifically for dipping,
06:24French toast sticks made lunch feel like a weekend treat.
06:28Water mixes in to make a 400-gallon batch.
06:32The bread slices slide into the batter.
06:35Go through about 400 gallons an hour.
06:37The accompanying tiny plastic tub of pancake syrup was always sticky, but nobody cared.
06:42These crisp on the outside, chewy on the inside sticks were so popular that kids actively tracked their arrival on
06:49the monthly printed menu calendar.
06:51The items initially cut include chicken dumplings, French toast sticks, and burritos.
06:56Eating dessert for your main course was the ultimate cafeteria victory,
07:00making these sugary batons an undisputed fan favorite.
07:04Workers pile them up on trays that travel through a wrapper and into cartons.
07:10All you have to do is pop them in the microwave.
07:14Number 3. Chocolate milk.
07:16If regular white milk was the responsible choice, chocolate milk was the king of the beverage cooler.
07:22Give me a milk.
07:24Chocolate.
07:26Chocolate.
07:29Packaged in those iconic paper cartons that were notoriously difficult to open without ripping,
07:35this icy cocoa-flavored treat was liquid currency.
07:38Millions of students perfected the art of slamming the carton down to expand the opening just right.
07:44Skim and 1% unflavored milk while also offering low-fat chocolate milk as an option.
07:51But by 2025, they're thinking of removing chocolate milk from middle school, elementary school lunches and breakfast entirely.
07:57It masked the metallic taste of cafeteria food, provided a quick rush of sugar,
08:02and served as the primary bargaining chip in high-stakes table trades.
08:07Lunch simply wasn't complete without one.
08:09Nearly all the school districts in the Denver metro still serve chocolate milk.
08:14It's a non-fat, lower-sugar version, about 6 to 8 more grams of sugar than the regular milk.
08:19Number 2. Chicken Nuggets
08:21Crispy, golden, and universally beloved, chicken nuggets were the undisputed crown jewels of the school menu.
08:28Cassie, what are you having for lunch today?
08:30Uh, I'm having chicken nuggets.
08:32Whether shaped like classic ovals, stars, or abstract blobs,
08:37these breaded bites brought a sense of pure joy to the cafeteria line.
08:41Paired with sweet and sour or barbecue sauce,
08:44they were so popular that the cafeteria line routinely stretched out the door on Nugget Day.
08:49I haven't had a chicken nugget in years.
08:52You had to eat them fast, though, leave them sitting too long, and they'd lose their crunch.
08:57But even cold, they were vastly superior to almost everything else.
09:02And all we do is whack them in a pan.
09:05Lovely.
09:05Now, who would still eat this?
09:09Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
09:14Sloppy Joe.
09:16Guaranteed at least one stain on your favorite shirt.
09:19Maybe we shouldn't have brought these sloppy joes.
09:22Oh, that is done.
09:23Macaroni and Cheese.
09:25Heavenly Mana takes a neon orange hue.
09:29Gooey, creamy, delicious Kraft macaroni and cheese.
09:32Garden salad with ranch dressing.
09:34Mostly lettuce, but saved by a mountain of the good stuff.
09:38Can you describe its taste?
09:43One new flavor that will blow your mind!
09:46Cup of Juice.
09:47Frozen foil topped juice triangles.
09:50You gotta squeeze it.
09:52New Minute Maid Fruit Juicy.
09:54The frozen juice treat you gotta squeeze to eat.
09:57Pudding Cups.
09:58Licking the foil lid clean was a requirement.
10:00Del Monte pudding cups.
10:02Innate, delicious, hard-to-reach flavors.
10:05Hey, look, I got one!
10:09Before we continue, check out this single from Current, EDM Transformed.
10:14Check out the full track and album below.
10:21Number one, rectangular pizza.
10:25Spongy crust, thick layer of sweet tomato sauce, diced pepperoni, and a sheet of rubbery cheese.
10:31The thick, rectangular slab of school pizza reigns supreme as the ultimate cafeteria icon.
10:37I like it still.
10:38It's still good.
10:39You're not so sure about it.
10:40Mm-hmm.
10:42You need a little ranch and some corn.
10:44Mm-hmm.
10:44I mean, it's still pizza.
10:45Yeah, there you go.
10:46Cooked on massive baking sheets to feed hundreds of kids at once, its unique geometry made it instantly recognizable.
10:54It defied all rules of traditional Italian cuisine, yet possessed an irresistible charm that defines childhood for millions.
11:01Taste testing is part of the recipe.
11:04It's excellent.
11:05I'm done.
11:05Now, the verdict is in the hands of the students.
11:09Making them part of the process empowers them to make better food choices.
11:14Nothing brought the entire student body together quite like Friday pizza day, earning this legendary square top honors on our
11:21list.
11:22When the cheese is melted and the crust is super crispy, we cut it into squares, just like they did
11:27back then.
11:28So it fits the cafeteria trade.
11:30Did we miss any legendary cafeteria items?
11:32Let us know in the comments below.
11:35Thank you very much.
11:35I'm going to show you how I'm figuring it out.
