00:00is right here in cleveland ohio i'm jeff phelps my buddy's andy baskin we go to the wise heart
00:05right we make it right call kyle right hotline this guy covers both sports nationally he's all
00:11over things he's on the nfl network baseball today every morning john boy media he's our
00:17pal chris rose hello chris good morning gentlemen how are you good morning we are well i i get
00:23irritated when he doesn't say battle bots but that's just me i'm sorry when he does battle
00:28that's that's still out too american gladiator oh american gladiator a good one too yeah i mean
00:33you know you can read the whole resume but we'd be here a while that's true it's extensive and it's
00:38good very good this is going on yeah uh we have a two-in-one football team i i i
00:45described it this
00:46way to andy earlier we were chatting about i said two and one that's really that's that's great
00:50that's neat it's cool glad they're off to a great start three and one wait a minute if you're three
00:56and one we might really have something going here chris i can't wait for thursday because i think
01:02they're going to beat the steelers yeah i think they've got a shot definitely um you know the
01:10the biggest question is because i thought the defense played great the other day against
01:15i know most most fans hadn't watched carolina the first two weeks maybe you saw some highlights but i
01:19can tell you they were just they were as good and as efficient as any offense in the league the
01:24first
01:24two weeks and the browns did a number on them so i was really really impressed with that the
01:30question is you know we you can't have four or five straight drives where you do nothing on offense
01:38and that's going to be the thing i'm watching most closely can this team put together
01:43a consistent drive every quarter that's that's what has to happen i think a lot of that is
01:49you know like i don't know if you've noticed casey concepcion's numbers but they're unlike anything
01:54i've almost ever seen we were talking about him earlier yeah yeah it's just like um i think he is
02:01such a weapon such a weapon but it feels like the beginning of the eric metcalf era for those of
02:08us
02:08that are old enough to remember that when he got drafted in 89 like he felt like this incredible
02:13incredible sports car that we just couldn't figure out how to get it out of the driveway
02:19you know we'd always throw things laterally instead of north and south and tell him go create
02:26instead of getting him the ball on the run there were a few times where we could and it was
02:32such a
02:32difference maker and i really feel like that is going to be the key to unlocking this offense and
02:37making it better and more free-flowing is getting him the ball when he is on the run and letting
02:43him do
02:43his thing instead of catching five yards out and getting tackled chris i was looking through this
02:49morning like i think it was the athletic that had the browns power ranked at 18 and i was like
02:54yeah
02:54that's right i feel like that's right 18 is pretty good and then i was like man i i didn't
03:00think they'd
03:00be this good i'm at that point so i'm still trying to figure it out i still think it's early
03:04in the
03:04season but i mean just give me your general overall optimism on what we're watching right now because
03:09i gotta be honest i'm way more optimistic than i ever thought i would be at this point
03:14i think the optimism comes from us being able to see the the players that we do have like the
03:20real
03:21bright spots you know we've been goo goo gaga over denzel boston pretty much since he set foot on the
03:28practice field right yeah we know that harold fanon had a great year last year and was incredible last
03:34week i just talked about concepcion i think quinchon's a really dependable back he's not
03:40he'll never be the upper echelon but i think that he's a really solid player and then defensively you
03:48know i mean mason graham has we all know about the start that he has had with four sacks through
03:54three weeks and just being a real disruptor uh go watch another baldy breakdown on him it was great
04:00this week um obviously we love swessinger i think our you know the two linebackers there in the
04:05middle of are really dependable tandem we're a mess obviously when campbell's not there in the
04:13secondary you know makai blackland played oh probably about as well as he can but there's just not a lot
04:19of depth there and and i do actually like our our safeties at this point so i think that we've
04:24got
04:25a lot and jared verse i thought was a a bully last week if you watched him he was just
04:30throwing guys
04:31back into bryce young um so there's a lot of good from that standpoint do i think we can compete
04:37for
04:38the division no i think it's going to be a two-team race i think it's going to be baltimore
04:42and
04:42cincinnati but that doesn't mean we can't get a lot of joy out of seeing something kind of develop in
04:49front of our eyes and chris with that in mind you know you see teams sometimes you know develop the
04:57team and drop in a quarterback that's a that's a strategy that's a an attempt of something that
05:03might be going on here if deshaun continues to play competent quarterback what would you think the
05:11chances of him being back here next year maybe on a one-year deal would be i don't think good
05:16but
05:16that's me i mean i i will applaud him for what he's done in the fourth quarter his numbers in
05:22the
05:22fourth quarter are exceptional this year and you know there was that stat yesterday that was tweeted
05:29out by our buddy andrew siciliano who said that he's the first quarterback to lead fourth quarter
05:37comebacks in consecutive games since sipe in 1980 during his mvp season and you know i'm not going to
05:46take that away from him no question but i i don't unless there's significant improvement it just
05:54doesn't feel like that's the future i just don't see it i would agree maybe yeah and by the way
06:01i don't
06:02think there's anything wrong with that as a browns fan saying you're trying to enjoy this season for as
06:08much goodness as it can supply to us because let's be honest after we lost week one everybody was
06:15laughing right they were like oh can't wait till we see shador and and we were talking about it too
06:22we were wondering is it after week two is it after week four after the thursday night game when is
06:27it
06:27going to be those are all talking points and those have been pushed to the back burner for now
06:31and for that i give him credit um looking at the offensive line i just find it super interesting
06:37that like pass blocking has been amazing like number two in the nfl and the run blocking isn't
06:43there i'm just your thoughts on the offensive line and it's just a weird disparity i mean it's it's major
06:52yeah it is and i also think that um
06:58you're getting less and less really good work in training camp you just are i mean the number of
07:04padded practices is a is a joke in terms of being able to put together consistency on either side of
07:11the line of scrimmage right you just guys don't hit they just do not hit and so how can you
07:17figure
07:18out what you're doing as an offensive line particularly we're not talking about adding one or two new pieces
07:23just rookies we're talking about flipping an entire line that haven't had a chance to play
07:29together so it's going to take them some time um i thought they did a really really good job last
07:35week you know giving judkins some creases i'd like to see raheem sanders get in there a little bit
07:41more um that's some pop doesn't it chris i like i mean i don't think he i don't think you
07:46can give
07:46him just one carry i think that's silly and uh you know maybe that changes things up a little bit
07:52i i don't know you know different running styles seeing things a little differently yeah look the
07:58ground game has got to get better i think this is going to be a real test for us on
08:01a short week
08:02uh against an opponent we have not played under you know under mike mccarthy yet if elton jenkins
08:10can't go luke whipler's at center and that's out of necessity uh i've i appreciate the continuity
08:16on the offensive line does there come a point where they think wait a minute let's let's take
08:22a look at dewand in some way shape or form do you do you juggle anybody around i wonder how
08:28long they
08:28stick with this if they're not completely pleased with the results yeah i mean look uh titus howard
08:37anybody that is a houston texans fan people will tell you that he was kicked inside the guard and
08:43and played well there because he just wasn't great at right tackle and he was he was getting
08:48beat quite a bit um and then the number of false starts i mean munk had said it like yes
08:54this is a
08:54veteran this is a guy who's been in the league for since 2019 i it's he knows he knows what
09:01cadence and
09:01snap counts are all about and so that that is on him to get better at that um now the
09:07question is can
09:08he play better at right tackle because if not then that's going to be a problem and you know i
09:13think
09:14that munkin is the sort of guy that will play the best players and i know that they extended titus
09:20howard but i think my guess is without them saying it that that they've had discussions with him or will
09:27that hey you got to get going because we do have a guy that has started in this league behind
09:32you
09:32and if you're not going to be the answer then we'll get in somebody in there that will be
09:37uh chris let's turn the table let's talk a little bit of baseball first of all who would you like
09:40to
09:40see the guardians play would you rather see them see play the white socks or the astros yeah it's
09:47i it's a silly discussion to have to be honest with you okay then i'll ask you another question
09:52i'm just kidding no no but it's it's like which matchup's better than
10:00neither i mean it doesn't matter okay it doesn't matter no that's fair it doesn't matter because
10:07you can make the point here that for the most part now look i don't know if y'all watched
10:11the
10:11white socks game but what grant taylor did yesterday was pretty incredible throwing 54 pitches
10:16i mean he hadn't thrown that many since he was a minor league starter um that was super impressive
10:22what he did i think you can't do that consistently right like he obviously won't pitch today if they
10:29need him and even tomorrow i think will be something that they'll really have to watch like you can't
10:35just blow a guy out in three games um like i like houston's back end of the bullpen better i
10:41like a
10:42bray you and hater better than taylor and take your choice but what chicago is is going to do
10:49that can you know certainly cause a problem for the guardians is is what you saw yesterday starting
10:55hagan smith and if they win um this series i think hagan smith will be your game one starter on
11:03saturday
11:03unless anthony k does not pitch at all then he might be the starter because we have not hit him
11:08well
11:09um the thing with houston is they've got the best player best hitter in the american league right
11:15in yordan alvarez he has not hit well against the white socks he had some crappy at bats yesterday
11:21but he's a guy that can change a series so my point is is that they kind of both pose
11:26some problems
11:27they both have shortcomings um i think the white socks win the series but i think the astros win
11:34today and they'll be through 16 pitchers at the end of the day today so it'll be great to see
11:38them
11:38throw 32 guys over three games that's crazy i don't think that's going to happen today you've got
11:42two you've got two guys that are kind of bona fide starters in hunter brown and sean burke who's
11:48the best starting pitcher on the white socks he's good like it would surprise me if he doesn't get
11:53through five innings you're not going to see 14 pitchers like we did yesterday i don't think
11:58would it surprise you if tanner bybee doesn't start game three
12:04no i think they'll go espino and cantillo which is what they should do the question is is
12:10what role does tanner bybee play in a series where you can pitch if it goes five games messick and
12:18williams for the five because of the off days that's the question what role can he play because
12:25you're not going to need bybee foster griffin and slade zaccone on the roster in my opinion
12:33okay great to have you with us buddy thank you you got it guys take care chris rose john boy
12:39media
