00:00As the last day of general debate unfolds at the 81st session of the United Nations
00:05General Assembly, we go now with our colleague in the city at this hour, Jorge Gestosa.
00:12He has all the latest updates in today's debates.
00:15Go ahead, Gestosa.
00:17Well, it was closing this last session here at the United Nations in New York City.
00:24Twenty people were participating, twenty countries were represented, and there was a common denominator.
00:32All of them were asking for a larger participation in the decision process for this Global South.
00:40Among the countries that were participating, there were some of our region.
00:45We're talking about Latin America and the Caribbean.
00:48We're talking El Salvador, talking about Costa Rica.
00:53We're talking Antigua and Bermuda, and also Grenade.
00:56All of them bringing over the request for paying special attention of the crisis regarding climate change,
01:06because they're very vulnerable of precisely the effects of climate change.
01:11In the case of El Salvador, they were putting special emphasis in their security system.
01:18They believe that they are setting an example, and they would like to export that system to
01:25the rest of other countries, especially in Latin America.
01:29And also we're mentioning what for them is an issue very important, that is migration.
01:34In the case of Costa Rica, they were talking about, for example, the respect of human rights,
01:42and what it has to do with the participation in the international community,
01:48international community represented here, for example, because they believe that they have to
01:54reinforce the role of the United Nations in terms of trying to bring dialogue in terms of
02:03unilateralism, in terms of political conflicts solved by military means.
02:08In the rest of the world, 50% of the participants of today were from Africa,
02:14and all of them, they have a very clear and very loud voice asking for more sovereignty.
02:22They definitely believe that there's a long way to go in that sense,
02:26and also the buildings that they are building in terms of requesting military out of their countries,
02:35and financing for their situation, and for combating climate change.
02:40So basically, there was an interesting session, and there was a closing of this 81st Annual Security Council,
02:50and Assembly General at the United Nations here in New York City.
