00:00Doug Karsh, Scott Anderson, and Aidan Hutchinson joins us at this time for our weekly conversation.
00:06Hutch, how you doing?
00:08What's up, guys? How we doing?
00:10Doing great.
00:11Yeah.
00:12And a lot of talk last week out of Dan Campbell and Calvin Shepard about guys being in the right
00:17position to make plays.
00:19I don't know how much film you've had a chance to watch, but do you feel like the mission accomplished,
00:24guys were in the right position to make plays yesterday?
00:27Yeah, man. Guys were in position, and they were making the plays, too.
00:30So, man, I thought the D-line was played at a high level yesterday.
00:35And even the back end, man, I'm really, really happy for the improvements that were made.
00:39Ron Fitz looked better, for sure.
00:41I think we played the run pretty darn well.
00:45And, yeah, obviously there's always things to clean up, but it's very encouraging, for sure.
00:512.25 to go, you guys have a seven-point lead, and it's up to the defense to get a
00:57stop.
00:57How big was it for this group to get that stop?
01:02It's so huge, man.
01:04And, you know, you get in the scenarios where they're moving the ball, and they moved it about, what, probably
01:11like 20 or 30 yards, that drive.
01:13And to kind of just dig our cleats in a little bit and get that, and Chuck getting that strip
01:19sack at the end, like, man, that was freaking awesome.
01:23You've had four games, I think, against Geno Smith.
01:25In all four games, he's been the same guy.
01:27300 yards passing, at least a couple of touchdowns.
01:31What is it that makes him so difficult to play against?
01:36Yeah, I don't know.
01:37You know, Geno, he's a talented player, man.
01:40And there's a reason he's been in this league for so long.
01:44And, yeah, man, he threw some great balls yesterday.
01:49And late, he got those couple of those PIs, and that kind of hurt us.
01:53But, I mean, look, even watching those coverage, I thought DJ was in position, man.
01:59And it's really hard to beat a good throw and a good route, even when the DB's in great position.
02:05Sometimes that wide receiver can still just make a play.
02:08Take us through your quarterback sack.
02:09I guess technically shared with Skylar Gill-Howard, but the rookie making an impact.
02:13But take us through the sack from your perspective.
02:17It was good.
02:18I felt like even when I was at halftime, I was, like, sitting there.
02:21I was, like, A.G., he ain't going to let me take over the game.
02:26He saw me.
02:28I've been with him for too long for him to do that.
02:30So I was, like, I'm going to have to earn one today.
02:32And it was deep in the drive that I got it.
02:35But kind of was hitting the edge, and Geno stepped up and kind of retraced with a little spin move.
02:41And me and Sky shared it.
02:44But, yeah, I knew A.G. about midway through that game.
02:48I was, like, he ain't going to let me beat them, did it?
02:53I saw DJ Wanam interviewed with, I think, Woody Woodruff from Fox 2 last week.
02:57And they were talking about the upcoming game.
02:59And DJ was pretty confident that he was going to have a pretty good game and get to the quarterback
03:04a few times.
03:05He did.
03:06He gets on the board with a couple of quarterback sacks.
03:09How has he been in practice?
03:10And did you see this coming as well?
03:16I would say, yeah.
03:17I mean, not, like, practice.
03:19I saw anything different.
03:20But I would say, you know, DJ's a talented player.
03:23And it's just, I knew it was just a matter of time for that lid to come off.
03:27And I've been there, too.
03:28I've been in that position where, I think in my second year, I didn't have a sack until the third
03:33game.
03:33It was, like, the third or fourth quarter where I got two of them late against Atlanta.
03:38And sometimes it's just like that, man.
03:39You've got to take a little bit for that lid to come off.
03:43But once it's off, man, they start flowing.
03:45And I thought he played such a good game, man.
03:46And it was so good to see him winning one-on-ones yesterday and really taking advantage of that other
03:54side of me.
03:55Which, if we're going to have success on defense, he's got to keep doing that.
03:59Aline's got to keep doing our thing.
04:01And if we all are clicking, we're a tough D-line to beat.
04:06We got a call from a listener earlier in the show about the Hail Mary defense.
04:09And you line up on the sidelines 20 yards downfield.
04:14Take us through the philosophy behind that play.
04:17And did you, I apologize.
04:19Did you make it back to the end zone for the actual hair when the ball came down?
04:23Yeah.
04:24So, at first one, there was, like, seven seconds.
04:26So, we ran out that play where the D-ends are kind of out in the sideline.
04:30And then I think on the next play when they were going, because it was only three seconds left on
04:37the next play.
04:38I don't think it was, I don't know if, with that play, I don't know.
04:43So, like, that was more we convert if it's Hail Mary.
04:47And I saw it was Hail Mary, so I'm kind of running down.
04:49And I made it to the end zone, and, dude, I was a yard from, I was running down, and
04:54I saw the big mosh pit.
04:56And I'm like, let me just stand in front of this thing, see if I can get a free one.
04:59And it ended up getting tipped, like, to the left of me.
05:02And me, Roger, I forgot who else was there.
05:05It just kind of slipped between everybody's grasp.
05:08But, yeah, it was, that was different for sure.
05:12Were you one of those kids that when you're growing up and you're playing, I don't know if you ever
05:14played 500,
05:15you know, the baseball game where you got a bunch of guys, you throw the ball up in the air,
05:18call it value.
05:19Because you were, I imagine you're always taller than everybody else in the neighborhood.
05:22Did you just clean up in that game?
05:25Oh, my God, are you kidding me?
05:27Yeah, that was, that was, that was where I got the hands, for sure.
05:33All right, so we mentioned some of the good stuff that happens.
05:35What happened yesterday?
05:37What about some stuff you guys need to clean up moving forward?
05:42Um, I think, off the top of my head, um, man, I thought we played a really good first half.
05:52You know, a couple, a couple explosives, but not, not too bad.
05:56Second half, it's, uh, I don't know.
06:00Off the top of my head, I don't have a ton.
06:01Um, cause I, I really do feel like we were playing good.
06:04They, they got bailed out by those PIs and we had them in third and 12 or fourth and 12
06:08on the, when we were up 14 and they got the PI on the goal line.
06:13And it's like, dude, at the one yard line, what are you going to do?
06:16Um, I'm sure.
06:17Yeah, there's, I mean, there's a lot of minuscule things that you can clean up on a micro level,
06:20but I mean, from a big picture point of view, I'm, I'm happy with how we played.
06:24And, you know, um, once we, I think we're going to meetings in like an hour and a half
06:29that I'll be going to, um, I'm sure I'll, I'd have more answers for you then, but from
06:35a, from a macro level, I think I'm, I'm, I'm happy for sure with, uh, man, the physicality
06:40and how we were playing, how we were rushing up front.
06:42It was, it was good to see.
06:43Last year, you guys had Al-QD Muhammad on the defensive line as well.
06:47He had double digit sack totals.
06:49How are things different up front this year?
06:51And are they, are they better?
06:52Are they improved?
06:53Or is it more versatile?
06:54How do you look at the defensive line as a whole this year?
06:58Um, hmm.
07:02I mean, I would argue that we're better.
07:05I mean, me and Quan, I mean, me and Quan obviously had great chemistry and we, uh, produced a good
07:11amount of sacks last season, but I think me being a year older, Alim being a year older,
07:16we're both one, uh, two years removed from our injuries now.
07:20Um, and it's like, I think me and him have grown and evolved to be better players this
07:27year.
07:27And then you bring in a guy like DJ Wanham who has proved to be a great compliment on
07:33either side.
07:33And so, um, yeah, I mean, I, I can't really, I can't compare too much, but I mean, from
07:38a personal level, I feel like I'm a better player.
07:40I know Alim is just from getting older and getting, um, getting wiser in the game.
07:46So yeah, it's, it's fun to see.
07:48And we always got to keep on growing and evolving and keep on rushing together.
07:51And if we do that, we'll have, uh, we'll have a lot of success.
07:54All right.
07:54I know you addressed this midweek, but it was funny and I'm not sure how much of our audience,
07:58uh, heard it.
08:00Um, but you brought up how, uh, or somebody asked you about the TV broadcast saying you
08:05always look absolutely exhausted.
08:08What is it about the way that you play that you, and the truth is you kind of do that
08:13you
08:13always look absolutely out of gas before every snap?
08:18Um, yeah, I mean, look, I, uh, I crash out out there and, um, I definitely don't have the
08:24best body language, but what I pride myself on is when I turn that tape on, you don't
08:30see that, you know, it's, it's all it's, I leave it all out there for pre-snap and, um,
08:36and, uh, yeah, I think I mentioned in the media that I do it as a mind game for the
08:39offensive
08:40linemen.
08:40So they think they're getting a rep off on that play, but.
08:43Um, in actuality, I'm, I'm rushing probably harder than I did play before, but yeah,
08:49it's, um, it kind of comes with the territory, I think of just playing.
08:53And I think I, I let all the linemen and snaps last year, um, once I got that in the
08:58regular
08:58season.
08:59And so, yeah, it's, um, I'm out there all the time and I know I, I give us a great
09:04chance
09:05to win and, um, man, I put in the work in the off season to, to condition my body, but
09:11yeah, if you see me breathing hard out there, just know, I'm not actually that tired.
09:15It's, it's, it's a, it's a mind game.
09:17Uh, all right.
09:18So Carolina coming up Sunday night, Bryce Young leads the NFL in passing.
09:23What challenges, I don't know how deep you've gotten into them, but, uh, what challenges
09:27will they present your defense?
09:31You know what?
09:32I have not seen too much Carolina.
09:34Um, I'm kind of taking this one day at a time and we just got off that, that game yesterday
09:41and just kind of, I'm in the mode of analyzing.
09:44So I'm not quite, I haven't seen a ton of them, but man, you know, Bryce played against
09:48him before and he's obviously a very dynamic player.
09:51So we're going to have to, uh, you know, and just add it to the, another, to the list of
09:56mobile quarterbacks as well.
09:58So yeah, definitely we'll have, we'll have our hands full and he's a, he's a talented
10:01player.
10:02And so, um, we're going to have to be ready for that one.
10:05Aside for accounting for the running abilities of, of smaller quarterbacks.
10:09So do you change your mindset at all as a pass rusher when you, when you have a smaller
10:13quarterback, do you try to get your arms up earlier to get in the passing lanes?
10:18Is it a different approach at all?
10:21Yeah, honestly, shorter quarterbacks, it's almost harder for me sometimes because obviously
10:26you get the Josh Allen's who guys, he's a big target, you know, it's a lot of surface
10:31area to hit if you're trying to get them.
10:33But like a guy, like the guys like Caleb Williams, the Bryce Young, the, I guess maybe
10:38Caleb's not that short, but I don't know what their height is, but I feel like, um, and
10:43even JJ last year, it's just, those guys can almost duck under you because they're already
10:47short and I'm coming in hot, trying to bring them down.
10:50Um, and, uh, so you got to really, it's a lot of emphasis on the week and kind of lowering
10:55your, your striking surface, especially me being six, six, I got to get low to, to wrap
11:00those guys up.
11:01So that's, that's always the emphasis.
11:03Have you ever been asked by the WWE or AEW wrestling to get involved in any of the wrestling
11:09events when they come to town?
11:10And is, is there a clause in your contract that prevents you from doing so?
11:16Um, you know, I never been asked, but I wouldn't be opposed, but I don't know how Brad would
11:20like me backflipping off a ladder into a, into a table.
11:24Uh, I don't know if that would, uh, if, um, if he would approve of that, but, um, I'm keeping
11:30all my options open for sure.
11:32All right, Hutch, every week we ask the listeners to send over a question and when we get a good
11:36one, we pass it along.
11:37Kang, our producer, you've got one.
11:39All right, Hutch.
11:40This one's from Jim in Canton.
11:41He says, uh, he's seen your commercials with a state farm, Jake from state farm.
11:46And he wants to know how did those commercials come about?
11:49Like when you're shooting them and also does that confident confidence of doing the ballet
11:53moves, give you the, uh, the agility now to be a defensive back.
11:58Dude, that ballet commercial was my favorite.
12:01It was like, I thought they really killed that concept, um, with that one, but man, how
12:07did it come about?
12:08Really, they just kind of reached out to my marketing agent and that when that one came
12:11through, that was a, uh, that was a no brainer, man.
12:14That was, um, that was one of the ones that you talk about just iconic football commercials.
12:19That's head and shoulders state farm.
12:21Um, I've been very lucky and blessed to be a part of some, um, iconic brands and that
12:28state farm one.
12:29And even meeting Jake from state farm, he was, uh, one of the most down to earth guys I've
12:33ever met, you know, and, uh, we've been able to kind of keep a relationship going after
12:38doing a couple of years of commercials with state farm.
12:40So, uh, really great people all around.
12:43Jake from state farm is as cool as he is in the commercial and, um, yeah, ballet, ballet
12:49rocks.
12:50Is his name really Jake?
12:54You know what?
12:54Legally, I don't know.
12:55I don't know if I'm allowed to.
12:59So I'm going to keep that as Jake from state farm.
13:03Are you jealous of your teammates hair?
13:08Which one?
13:09Uh, with the one of the head and shoulders.
13:10Is it Tate Rattling?
13:11No, it's, uh, or is it Blake Miller?
13:13Blake Miller.
13:13I'm sorry.
13:14Um, you know, me and Blake, Blake's kind of got the wavy fall down.
13:18I kind of got the curls.
13:20So I think it's hard to judge and compare when we're just two different, two different hair
13:25bodies.
13:26I would say, I'd appreciate it as always.
13:28Thanks for joining us.
13:29We'll do it again next week.
13:30Good luck at Caroline.
13:32All right, guys.
13:33We'll see you later.
13:34There he is.
13:34Hutch joining us every Monday here on Carson Anderson on 97.1.
