00:00It's Carson Anderson here on 97.1.
00:04We will get to phone calls coming up,
00:06but it's time to talk with Aidan Hutchinson,
00:08who joins us at this time,
00:10brought to you by C-Mac Transportation.
00:12And Hutch, thanks for being with us.
00:14I know it's a busy week, a short week.
00:16As you look back at the film of the game on Sunday,
00:19what is your overall takeaway on the performance?
00:24Yeah, I haven't watched it too closely,
00:27but man, we found a way to win,
00:29which in the NFL is the name of the game, man.
00:32It was dominant at first,
00:34and then third quarter kind of,
00:36we started the third quarter with a turnover,
00:38and then it just kind of,
00:41we're going tempo and completing some chunks here and there.
00:46Yeah, man, but look, we found a way to win,
00:48which is, look, the NFL, it's a tough league to win in,
00:51so we're happy about that.
00:53And we're, shoot, it's a quick turnaround to Buffalo,
00:56so all eyes are on that now.
00:58Yeah, well, what's the one thing you want to clean up first
01:01in getting ready to get back to practice here?
01:09Um, you know, we don't even have practice this week,
01:11so there's not going to be a ton that we can really work on,
01:15but I think, I'm not really sure if I'm,
01:19I don't know what was going on.
01:21We still haven't really met.
01:22Um, uh, we had, meetings are kind of later today.
01:26They gave us the morning off, so it's, uh, I'm not, I'm not sure.
01:30I kind of, you kind of got to watch the tape and really see it.
01:32It's hard to, uh, to really know what kind of was unfolding
01:36in that third quarter to kind of, um,
01:39have the outcome that, that we had.
01:42So one of the things, I was looking at the snap counts,
01:44and one thing I found really interesting is how much
01:46Skylar Gill-Howard played.
01:4847 snaps, uh, second amongst defensive tackles.
01:52Were you, watching him develop playing next to you,
01:55how important is he potentially going to be for this team?
01:59He's going to be huge, man.
02:00I mean, he was showing out in preseason.
02:02He earned his spot on this team,
02:03and clearly he's put himself in a position
02:06where he needs to be on the field, you know,
02:08and he can, uh, he can really add a lot of value
02:11to our defense.
02:11So, um, man, I'm, I'm really happy for him
02:14and I'm, and I'm proud of him
02:15and he's only going to get better and better.
02:18And, uh, yeah, he's, um, he's, he's, uh,
02:22he's a great player.
02:23He's going to continue to evolve and to, uh, and to grow.
02:25And so it's, I'm excited to see that, that development.
02:28What was it like for you watching a rookie
02:30like Derek Moore, who also played at Michigan,
02:32get his first taste of the NFL?
02:34Could you sense his nerves?
02:36Did you have conversations with him?
02:38What was it all like?
02:40Uh, I, you know, I haven't talked to Demo too much.
02:43I think he was getting in there a little bit
02:45and, uh, kind of getting his, his feet, his feet wet.
02:48And, um, yeah, I haven't talked to him too much
02:50about the game, but, um, I know getting that first one
02:53under your belt as a rookie is always tough.
02:56You know, I remember my first play as a rookie
02:58and we were playing against the Eagles
03:00first snap of the game.
03:01I think I screwed up.
03:02I screwed up the play.
03:04So, uh, I, uh, being in that first game as a rookie
03:07and, and, um, it's, it's always tough,
03:09but it's, um, rookie years all about
03:11you're in a race to improve every single game.
03:15We spoke with Jared Goff earlier today
03:17and we asked if he had any questions for you
03:19and he did.
03:21He wanted us to ask you, how much time did you spend
03:25setting up that spin move?
03:27Because that was sweet.
03:28So, how much time do you spend setting up a spin move?
03:34Dude, you know, it's just, every game is different.
03:38And this game, I just didn't really have a ton of opportunities
03:41in the first half to do it until I kind of got into the last play
03:46and, and the look kind of presented itself.
03:48And, um, yeah, it kind of, it hit.
03:51So it was, uh, those ones feel the best
03:53where you're kind of just playing that chess game
03:55and, and it works out and you get the sack
03:58and always getting that first sack too of the season.
04:01It's like, you got to get the lid off the hoop
04:03and then you can kind of start rolling.
04:05So it's, um, I'm, I'm, I'm really, uh, I was pumped.
04:08I was pumped about that one.
04:09The other thing is it takes them out of field goal range.
04:11When you're playing in the game, are you aware,
04:13Hey, a big play here, we can like knock them
04:15out of field goal range.
04:16Are you aware of that in the time
04:18or are you just playing the game
04:19and whatever happens, happens?
04:21Yeah.
04:22Dude, you know, when you get out there
04:23and you're on play six of the drive,
04:25you're not, yeah, I don't think I'm,
04:27I'm purely playing off of instinct at that point.
04:30And, um, I maybe have a one thought in my brain
04:33of what I might be doing on that snap.
04:35But besides that, you just gotta, you just, uh,
04:39man, you playing off the field.
04:40And that's where I feel, that's where I feel
04:41like I thrive is just, uh, getting in game
04:44and getting those deeper drives
04:46and just, uh, relying on, on me being a football player
04:49and having, having that feel.
04:51You're a guy that you find yourself,
04:53it doesn't matter.
04:54Do you prefer a side to rush the quarterback from?
04:57Um, yeah, you know, uh, really my whole college
05:03NFL career up until this point
05:05has been me rushing on the left.
05:07I kind of made it a focus this year
05:08to rush more on the right.
05:10And with Panay bumping over to, uh,
05:12the left tackle, all right.
05:14It's, he, uh, definitely, um,
05:16we got better together this camp
05:18and I got a lot better on the right.
05:20So, uh, I definitely have made myself
05:22more dynamic as a rusher
05:23and being able to move around.
05:25And I can rush inside too,
05:27but I didn't do that too much this game,
05:28but I was definitely bumping around left and right.
05:31I think having that versatility
05:32has been huge in the game for, uh, for this year.
05:35You ever get tired of double teams?
05:40Yeah. Yeah.
05:41You know, it actually, it wasn't too bad yesterday.
05:43Some games you feel like it's hard
05:45to get a one-on-one
05:46and some games they kind of let you rush,
05:48you know, um, relatively speaking.
05:50So, uh, I thought in the first half
05:53they were kind of chipping,
05:54but in the second half,
05:55I think they were kind of in go mode
05:56with like their tempo
05:57and them trying to, you know,
05:59get back in the game.
06:00So definitely had some more one-on-ones
06:02that I'm used to.
06:03So it was, uh, it was great,
06:05but yeah, it's really,
06:06it just depends on the game, man.
06:07Some games you get a lot of ops,
06:09some games you might only get a couple
06:11and you got to make the most of it.
06:13All right, let's go to overtime.
06:14And actually let's go to the last play of the game.
06:16They line up, you guys call timeout.
06:18Out of the timeout,
06:20it looked like the defense was perfect.
06:22When you went over to the sideline
06:24during the timeout,
06:25was there any discussion,
06:27anything that Kelvin Shepard said
06:29or anybody said that,
06:30that helped you guys execute second time around?
06:33What was said in that timeout, if anything?
06:37It was a 30 second timeout.
06:39Um, so we didn't even really go back
06:42to the sideline.
06:43I don't think I might be tripping right now,
06:45but I don't, I'm pretty sure
06:46we kind of just stayed on the field.
06:49Um, and yeah, you know, it, it was,
06:52when you get in those moments
06:53and those deep drives of you're just playing ball,
06:56they score, you got, you're just getting,
06:57it's like, it's just on the field,
06:59it's bang, bang.
07:00Like you're just going to the next play.
07:02And so that's kind of, that's what,
07:03that's what we did.
07:04And, you know, I think, uh, they kind of,
07:06it was more of just a quick, like,
07:09uh, like fade route in the end zone
07:11where it's like, DB's just got to win.
07:13And, um, that's, and that's what he did.
07:15Rock won and he, uh, he ended the game for us.
07:18And so that was, that's a credit to him, man.
07:20He's had such a great camp
07:21and seeing him thrive in the biggest moment
07:24to win the games.
07:25It's like, that's to me,
07:26that's what football is all about, man.
07:27Like you can, um, the game can go a certain way,
07:32but it's all matters about how you finish
07:34and how you complete the game.
07:36And usually those are the ones who,
07:38you know, who can excel
07:39in those situational calls
07:41that will win the game in the NFL.
07:43One of the things I love about watching the NFL
07:45is when the game's over with
07:47and you guys meet at midfield
07:49and you're shaking hands
07:50or having conversations with the other team,
07:52there's that mutual respect that goes on.
07:54And I imagine a lot of players come up to you
07:56with, with all types of respect
07:57because of the player you are.
07:59Do you seek out players to talk to
08:01specifically after the game?
08:03And have you ever been surprised
08:05by a post-game comment
08:07that somebody said to you?
08:09That's a great question.
08:11Uh, I was due.
08:13You know, usually I, uh,
08:16it's pretty brief.
08:18Um, even yesterday, I think
08:20just obviously all the competitive juices
08:23are flowing by both teams.
08:25They kind of come back in the game.
08:26They have a chance to win.
08:27We win.
08:28I'm trying to, you know,
08:29Rock is hooting and hollering
08:31after, after the, the, uh, the last stop.
08:34And so I was more in trying to, you know,
08:37keep him at bay
08:38and make sure he doesn't do something
08:40that would get him in trouble
08:41for the next game.
08:43So this was definitely a weird one
08:45in the fact that it was kind of
08:46a walk-off win.
08:47Um, but yeah, man,
08:49I think it's always, uh,
08:50I respect every player in this league
08:51and it's, um, it's,
08:54it's amazing in the NFL.
08:55I mean, every week it's, uh,
08:57it's a different test
08:58and it's, uh, it's just all about
09:01how you can, how you can manage it
09:02and how, how you can be as consistent
09:04as, as you can be throughout 17 games.
09:07Which brings us to this week's test.
09:08Buffalo, short week.
09:10They have a short week too, though.
09:11But what about, uh, try to slow down Allen?
09:14How tough is that?
09:15And, and, and what are some of the keys
09:17to you guys having success against him?
09:21Yeah, I didn't get to play against him in 24
09:23because I was hurt when we lost that game.
09:25And then we'd, last time I played against him
09:27was 22 and we played him.
09:28I think it was Thanksgiving, maybe.
09:31Um, when we kind of, uh,
09:33he lost right at the end of the game.
09:34But, so yeah, I gotta, uh,
09:37it's big.
09:37It's going to be a big game for us.
09:39You know, this is, um,
09:40we'd never beaten the Bills since I've been here.
09:42So, um, this is,
09:44this one's been circled on our calendar
09:45and we gotta, uh,
09:46we gotta execute and do our thing.
09:48And I think we showed a lot of good stuff
09:50on defense, um, this, this past game.
09:53Just, I think, a couple things to clean up.
09:55But man, I think for the most part,
09:56we were, we were, for three quarters, man,
09:58we were playing some high-level football,
10:00creating turnovers,
10:01get pressure on the quarterback,
10:03stop on the run.
10:04Um, it was definitely not going our way
10:07towards the end,
10:08but I think we can build off
10:11those first three quarters,
10:12which is, which I think
10:13if we just focus on ourselves
10:15and do that,
10:15we can, we can find some success
10:17in this game.
10:18You guys faced plenty of, uh,
10:20mobile quarterbacks, uh,
10:21last year, Lamar Jackson,
10:23Caleb Williams.
10:24You handled both of those guys
10:25actually pretty well.
10:27Is Josh Allen a different level
10:29or is he that same type of quarterback?
10:31And do you have your own personal
10:32little hit list about quarterbacks
10:34that you face?
10:37Yeah, I mean, uh,
10:38he's definitely in that top tier
10:40and, you know, he's fast,
10:42but he's also a big body,
10:44tough to take down.
10:45So, um, you definitely got to bring it
10:47if you're going to,
10:47if you're going to get into the floor.
10:49But, uh, yeah, I think
10:50he's definitely in that top tier
10:52of, of, of scrambling quarterbacks.
10:54And I mean, he's put it on tape
10:55for years now.
10:56So, um, yeah, it's, it's honestly
10:59every week though, it's like,
11:01it's just, this is kind of the standard
11:03it's gotten to be in the NFL.
11:05And even in our division with,
11:07um, Caleb Williams, uh, Kyler,
11:11uh, man, Jordan Lowe, I mean,
11:13every quarterback we play,
11:14obviously there may be some
11:15better scramblers and other,
11:16but, and even shook who we just played.
11:18I mean, he, he's fast as hell
11:20and he could get out of the pocket,
11:22but yeah, Josh definitely presents
11:24a little bit different.
11:25Just being so big and athletic,
11:27you know, definitely got to
11:28get into the ground.
11:29Hutch, we're going to enjoy this.
11:30And I love fans are as well.
11:31And each week we ask the fans
11:32to send some questions over
11:34for you and we sift through them
11:36to see if there's a worthy one.
11:37And Kang, our producer has one
11:39from a fan for you today.
11:40All right, Aiden, this one's from
11:41Gabe in Rochester Hills.
11:43He wants to know who would be
11:45the best teammate to play beer pong
11:47with and who would be the worst
11:48teammate to play beer pong with
11:49as your partner.
11:51Oh man, let me think.
11:53Okay.
11:54The best teammate to, okay.
11:56Off the rip, if I'm thinking about it,
11:58might the best teammate would probably
12:00be Tate Ratlidge to play with.
12:03And then the worst teammate,
12:05I would probably say,
12:10let me think about this.
12:12It's a tough one.
12:13I'm going to, I'm going to say,
12:20you can circle back.
12:21I probably say, no, I got it.
12:23I'm going to say, I'm going to say
12:26Rocky Sin.
12:26I think he, he, he doesn't even drink.
12:29So I don't think he would even be,
12:31he would even be participating
12:33how, how I want him to be.
12:34So that's a great, great answer.
12:38So usually you're going to speak
12:39to us before golf.
12:41So we're every week also going to ask you
12:43if you have any questions for Jared.
12:44So maybe next week we can get a,
12:46a Hutch question for Jared.
12:47If you have any,
12:49then we'll have some fun with it.
12:51Of course.
12:52Yes.
12:53All right.
12:53Hey, good luck this week.
12:54And we will talk again next week.
12:56And oh, real quick,
12:57Michigan bounced back.
12:58You said they would.
12:59Your thoughts on the Wolverines.
13:01Hey, last week they were 1-0.
13:04This week they're 2-0.
13:05So, um, man, that one, that one,
13:09that one was, uh, was personal for the boys.
13:13And I, uh, I took a lot of joy in that win.
13:17I mean, I got a lot of crap
13:18after that Western Michigan game
13:20from everybody.
13:21Yeah.
13:21And when, right when they beat Oklahoma,
13:23I walked right into that facility.
13:25I was just, there's nothing,
13:27there's nothing better
13:28than having some college pride
13:29for your team.
13:30And they're showing out.
13:32So, yeah, man, it was great.
13:332-0.
13:34So maybe we'll get back
13:35in the top 25 this week.
13:37You know, we got absolutely snubbed
13:38after the first week being 1-0.
13:40But here we are.
13:41We should be back.
13:43They are 19.
13:4419 is where they settled in.
13:46So thanks for your time, Hutch.
13:48We'll talk next week.
13:50All right, guys.
13:51We'll see you later.
13:52There he is.
13:52Aiden Hutchinson brought to you
13:53by C-Mac Transportation.
13:56We'll get to the people next.
13:582-4-8-5-3-9-97-97.
