A devastating explosion near Athens’ iconic Acropolis has left six people dead, including four American tourists who were staying in the historic Plaka district.
The victims included two American men and two women believed to be two couples who were visiting Greece. They were reportedly expected to catch a flight from Athens airport on Friday but never arrived.
Emergency crews recovered all six bodies from the wreckage after the powerful blast destroyed the two-story residential building. Nearby homes, businesses and vehicles were also damaged, while debris and broken glass were scattered across the surrounding streets.
Authorities believe a major gas leak may have caused the explosion, although the exact circumstances remain under investigation. Rescue teams used firefighters, search dogs, cameras and sensors while carefully clearing the rubble.
Two people were also injured in a neighboring building. Damage reached a nearby church, where services were moved outdoors. The tragedy has shocked both local residents and visitors in Athens.
