Tender slow cooker gammon, buttery potatoes and steamed cabbage come together in this simple, comforting family dinner. The ham cooks gently with carrots, bay leaves and a little water, then rests in foil so it slices beautifully before serving.

The potatoes are boiled until tender and finished with melted butter and fresh parsley, while the cabbage is simmered, drained and tossed with butter and white pepper for a classic, peppery side. It’s an easy ham and cabbage recipe that feels traditional, hearty and full of flavour, with the option to mash the potatoes if you prefer.

If you’re looking for a slow cooker ham recipe, gammon dinner, cabbage and potatoes meal, or an easy British and Irish-style tea, this cosy home-cooked dish is a great fit. It’s also a practical family meal idea with leftovers that work well for sandwiches and rolls.

00:03well hello there folks and a very warm welcome as usual back to what's for tea and it's lovely
00:09to see you all again and i hope that i find you very well and tonight for tea i made
00:14this very
00:14simple and i mean very simple and i did debate whether i was going to film this or not just
00:19because it is so easy but it's delicious so i decided just to film it anyway so this is gammon
00:25or ham and i'll just show you what i've used and i've also used some potatoes and cabbage as well
00:32but this is what you're going to need for the ham or what i used for the ham so i've
00:37got some water
00:37there i've also got a smoked gammon or ham joint i've got a few carrots and then just a few
00:43bay leaves
00:44as well so this was my gammon here this one was from morrison's it's just their standard smoked
00:50gammon joint and if there's any binding you know film or string or anything around your gammon just
00:56make sure you snip this off just take this off completely and then into the bottom of the slow
01:02cooker i've got a few carrots just to make sure that the gammon isn't sitting directly in the bottom
01:07of your crock pot or slow cooker so pop your ham or your gammon on top of your carrots and
01:14then
01:15around the edge you want to pop your water don't pour this directly over the gammon because we just
01:20want to steam it really we just want to create steam in there so you don't need much water a
01:25few
01:26optional bay leaves pop your lid on and give this about five or six hours on low this will depend
01:32on
01:32the size of your joint of meat mine took around about five hours and this was me when it was
01:39ready
01:40now i'm going to set this to the side for about half an hour i'm just going to lightly wrap
01:44this in foil to relax and it will firm up a wee bit and make it much easier to cut
01:50as well so into
01:51foil for about half an hour while you get your cabbage and your tatties done so i'm going to make
01:56steamed cabbage and boiled potatoes to go along with this so i'm just going to take the outer leaves
02:02off of the cabbage because they tend to be a bit gnarly then i'm going to split my cabbage down
02:07the
02:07middle and then just slice this or shred this make sure you remove the heart or the core because that
02:13tends to be very hard and now i'm going to do the tatties i like to use maris pipers just
02:19because
02:19they're nice and dry and flowery so i'm using about six medium potatoes you just want to peel them
02:25and rinse them and then either half or quarter them depending on the size of your potatoes get these
02:32into a little cold water and bring this up to the boil and then i like to add some boiling
02:38water once
02:39they're boiling because if you try and boil a whole pan of cold water it takes forever and a day
02:45so
02:45i've just started doing it this way now add a dash of salt when they're simmering and let those simmer
02:51away for about 15 to 20 minutes until they're tender and another pan you want to do exactly the same
02:57with your cabbage just a little cold water to get it going get that up to the boil and then
03:04once it's
03:04boiling i like to top it up with some more boiling water and then just add another dash of salt
03:11if
03:11you like and then just the same as the tatties let this simmer away until it's tender so i'm going
03:17to melt down some butter then i'm going to add some fresh parsley which we're just going to drizzle on
03:22the potatoes when they're cooked so just add your parsley to the melted butter i just melt this
03:27in the microwave so check your potatoes and if they are nice and tender you can just drain
03:32your water away and they'll should be nice and dry and i'm just going to drizzle over my melted butter
03:38and parsley just do this nice and slowly to make sure they're all evenly coated just like this and
03:45then i'm going to pop my pan lid on and let them sit for a minute or so just to
03:49let all that butter
03:50soak in whilst you're waiting you can go and check your cabbage and this should be nice and tender by
03:55now
03:56give it a bit longer if you like really soft cabbage drain the water out and i like to go
04:01through
04:01mine with a knife just to chop it up a wee bit finer but you can you know leave it
04:05a hole if you like or
04:07chop it up as finely as you like and then the last thing i'm going to do is add a
04:11knob of butter and i
04:12also like to add some white pepper as well has to be white pepper though not black pepper i don't
04:18know
04:18why white pepper just works really well in this so stir through your butter until it's all melted
04:25throughout your cabbage and then add the pepper and give this a good stir through as well add as
04:31much pepper as you like you might not want a whole teaspoon i like mine really peppery so i've added
04:37a
04:37whole teaspoon you can either slice your ham straight down like this or turn the ham on its side like
04:43this if you find it easier to cut this one cut really easy so i just stood this up on
04:49its end and as you
04:50see you've got some lovely thick slices there so just keep going until you have as many slices
04:56as you need and if you don't have a slow cooker you can still make this on the stovetop just
05:02with a
05:02couple of changes so for this size of joint which is about 750 grams or a pound and a half
05:09it will take
05:09you about an hour and 15 minutes to an hour and 30 minutes to boil plus the half hour to
05:15rest so
05:15just boil this cover it in water completely and just let it simmer away for about an hour and 15
05:21minutes to an hour and 30 minutes leave the binding on you know don't take it off do leave it
05:26on because
05:27there's going to be more movement in the pan so you do want to keep any binding on that's on
05:32your
05:32meat but other than that you can do this on the stovetop as well so do let me know if
05:38you're planning
05:38on giving this one a go it's really really delicious and any leftovers that you will inevitably have
05:44will be great for sandwiches or rolls or anything you know throughout the week so thank you so much
