00:45We are glad you're here. Let's get right into it.
00:47Chinese President Xi Jinping is wrapping up his visit to Washington today
00:50after a day of high-stakes talks with President Trump.
00:53Trump rolled out the red carpet for Xi again last night, literally,
00:58hosting a state dinner to mark the Chinese leader's first visit to Washington in more than a decade.
01:03And for all the tensions between the U.S. and China,
01:07Xi spent much of the visit talking about where the two countries can work together.
01:11He said China's push for what he calls the Great Rejuvenation
01:15and Trump's promise to make America great again can go hand in hand.
01:19But Xi also warned against what's known as the Thucydides Trap,
01:23the idea that a rising power challenging an established one can ultimately lead to war.
01:29Xi's point, the U.S. and China don't have to end up there.
01:33He made a similar argument when the two leaders met in Beijing back in May.
01:37Meanwhile, Trump kept things friendly.
01:39As the leaders of our two nations, President Xi and I both understand that we represent different systems,
01:47but the ties between our people endure and we've never gotten along better.
01:53Since the first trade ships from New York left the harbor to arrive on the banks of the Pearl River,
02:01Americans and Chinese have always exchanged goods, knowledge, customs and ideas.
02:06This has been the foundation of commerce and mutual respect between our countries.
02:11And together we can continue to build a relationship that promotes prosperity and security for future generations.
02:20Behind all that diplomacy, though, there are still some big disagreements.
02:24The two leaders talked trade, artificial intelligence and Taiwan,
02:28all areas where the U.S. and China remain deeply at odds.
02:32Xi said the two sides reached, quote, common understanding on many issues.
02:37Today, Xi and his wife are scheduled to join the President and First Lady for a private tea,
02:41then tour the National Archives before heading home to China.
02:45The people building AI are warning it may be moving too fast.
02:49President Trump isn't buying it.
02:51Now they're about to get in a room together.
02:53Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson are set to meet with some of the biggest names in AI next week.
02:58The meeting is set for Tuesday at the White House, according to multiple reports.
03:02We don't know yet which tech CEOs will be there,
03:05but some of the industry's biggest names were already at the White House for last night's state dinner
03:10with President Xi, including OpenAI's Sam Altman and Meta's Mark Zuckerberg.
03:15And this comes at the pressure on Washington to put some guardrails around AI keeps growing.
03:20Some of the people building the most powerful AI models are now warning
03:24about catastrophic risks if development moves too fast.
03:28Johnson's solution?
03:29Get Trump and the AI CEOs to, quote,
03:32go in a big room, close the door, and sort this out.
03:35Trump, though, has repeatedly dismissed those warnings,
03:38calling fears about AI destroying humanity a hoax.
03:41His concern has been different.
03:43Slow down too much, and the U.S. risks losing the AI race to China.
03:48Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu used part of his UN speech Thursday
03:52to go after someone much closer to home, New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani.
03:57Netanyahu accused Mamdani of anti-Semitism and said Jewish New Yorkers have told him
04:02they no longer feel safe in the city.
04:04Shame on you.
04:06Shame on you for distorting the facts.
04:09Shame on you for inverting victim and aggressor.
04:12Shame on you for spitting in the face of truth.
04:17Mr. Mamdani, since you were elected mayor of this city,
04:22many Jews no longer feel safe in New York.
04:26They talk to me.
04:27They tell me.
04:29This isn't the city we remember.
04:31It changed so quickly.
04:33Mamdani wasn't there,
04:34and delegates from dozens of countries walked out before Netanyahu spoke.
04:38The mayor responded in a statement saying, quote,
04:41Yet no lie can change the fact that he remains the subject of an international criminal court arrest warrant
04:47alleging war crimes and crimes against humanity.
04:51Netanyahu denies those charges.
04:52Shortly before the speech, Mamdani posted this video, no words,
04:57just the mayor planting an olive tree at Gracie Mansion
04:59and sharing a meal with Palestinian families from Gaza.
05:03His caption,
05:04May peace be our future.
05:06These two have been going at each other for months.
05:09Mamdani has called Netanyahu a war criminal and urged the federal government to arrest him.
05:14In this video posted earlier this week,
05:16Netanyahu accused Mamdani of supporting Hamas
05:18and inciting riots against Jewish New Yorkers.
05:21Mamdani has condemned Hamas as a terrorist organization,
05:25and according to the New York Times,
05:26there have been no riots targeting Jewish New Yorkers since he took office.
05:30And Mamdani is now showing up in Israeli politics.
05:34Netanyahu is running for re-election next month.
05:37His Likud party has put Mamdani's face on campaign billboards in Israel,
05:41right there alongside the leaders of Iran, Turkey, and Hezbollah.
05:46Netanyahu also posted this AI-generated campaign video earlier this month,
05:50imagining Mamdani and other Netanyahu opponents celebrating his defeat.
05:55One of the people shot during the 2024 assassination attempt on President Trump has died.
06:01James Copenhaver was 76.
06:04House Republicans shared this photo of Copenhaver,
06:06who died Wednesday at a Pittsburgh hospital surrounded by his family.
06:11Copenhaver was sitting in the bleachers at Trump's rally in Butler, Pennsylvania,
06:15when a gunman opened fire.
06:16He was shot in the arm and abdomen and left with lingering injuries.
06:20Afterward, he walked with a cane.
06:23Trump was grazed in the ear.
06:25Two other people in the crowd were also shot.
06:27David Dutch survived.
06:29Corey Contemporatory was killed while shielding his family from the gunfire.
06:34Right now, we don't know whether Copenhaver's death was related to the wounds he suffered that day.
06:39The medical examiner says his cause and manner of death are still pending.
06:43Copenhaver and his wife sued the federal government in June,
06:47accusing the Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security of, quote,
06:51utterly failing to protect people at the rally.
06:54Trump remembered Copenhaver Thursday as a true American patriot,
06:58calling his death a tremendous loss.
07:01President Trump's massive arch near Arlington National Cemetery is one step closer to reality this morning.
07:07The Federal Preservation Agency is ending its review with local officials over the project's impact on nearby historic sites.
07:14And there's been plenty of pushback.
07:17The administration itself, through the National Park Service,
07:20says the 250-foot arch would have adverse effects on the area.
07:24Virginia officials say it would mar the landscape around Arlington National Cemetery.
07:29They wanted the administration to consider changes, including shrinking or moving it.
07:34And now the Federal Preservation Council, led by a Trump appointee, is pulling the plug on that process.
07:40In this letter, it says,
07:42We are hereby terminating consultation.
07:44That means the administration can move forward without reaching an agreement with Virginia and D.C. officials.
07:50The council will send its final comments to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum by October 7th.
07:56He'll then decide whether to move forward.
07:59And remember, Trump recently added a new purpose for this thing.
08:02He says the arch will also serve as a military complex.
