00:00San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria is coming in for criticism after the city overbilled residents
00:04for trash collection, charging people, in some cases, $1,000 more than they regularly pay for
00:11the service. What's even worse, the bill appeared on people's property taxes rather than on their
00:16usual sanitation bills. And it's part of a broader picture of fiscal mismanagement in San Diego over
00:23the last several years, especially since Democrats took control of the mayor's office. San Diego is
00:28one of the only major cities in America that regularly has had Republican mayors, most recently
00:34Kevin Faulconer. Faulconer took over after Democrat Mayor Bob Filner was kicked out of office after just
00:40a few months in a truly bizarre sexual harassment scandal. Faulconer was an anti-Trump Republican,
00:45and that seemed to balance the politics of the city rather nicely. But the Democrats came in and
00:51in a watershed moment really seemed to take over in San Diego. But along with that came
00:58a familiar problem from other big cities, which is overspending. The new Democratic administration of
01:04Todd Gloria added a whole extra layer of middle managers who simply drained the city's financial
01:11resources. And as a result, the city faced a huge budget crunch earlier this year that even saw them
01:16charging for parking in Balboa Park. That triggered public opposition, as well as these trash fees,
01:24which are now the latest example of financial mismanagement in the city. And while Todd Gloria
01:30has been a standard bearer for Democrats in San Diego, he is quickly becoming the poster child
01:36for financial mismanagement in a city that turns blue.
