BetMGM’s Pat Boyle joined the show to talk about who he would take in a Red Sox /Yankees Wild Card series, and ran down his takes on the slate of NFL games this weekend.

00:23I'd say the Yankees are actually coming together at the right time.

00:28Need a little captain going up against the skipper right before the playoffs start.

00:35Trust me, we got the Red Sox right where we want them.
00:38Okay, so that part I understand.
00:41Like, all right, there's a little bit of drama, the Aaron Judge thing,
00:44and I know Aaron Boone's saying something different.
00:46But does Aaron Boone think we're morons when he says that,
00:50you know, I don't know really if, I haven't decided yet if Schlittler's going to start game one.
00:54Like, who, who, you should, as an instantly fireable offense in a three-game series,
01:00if you're the manager and you don't start Schlittler, isn't it?
01:07Well, yeah, I mean, I would take a guess and say Cam Schlittler is going to be starting game one
01:14next week.
01:14Now, again, I've done about ten post-game shows for the Yankees over the last two years,
01:18so that's probably one area where I won't be as hot-button opinionated as normal,
01:23but I would venture to say Cam Schlittler is going to start game one.
01:31I think the way Boone goes about it, man, he throws out a ton of what-ifs or a ton
01:36of scenarios out loud,
01:37and he kind of, like, he kind of thinks out loud at times.
01:40I would venture to guess Cam Schlittler is going to start game one,
01:43and as it pertains to Judge, I mean, I honestly have no clue.
01:46We, like, prediction Tuesday night, is he in the lineup or not?
01:49I would also guess yes, but I'm not confident.
01:53So, you know, who knows, man, over the next couple of days?
01:56I know he got that injection on his calf, and I know he's been working his ass off to get
02:00ready.
02:00You know, we only have to wait a couple more days to find out.
02:03Who would you take in that series?
02:04Because, I mean, right now, it's a, first of all, on paper, this series is awesome.
02:08I mean, it truly is going to be a, I mean, the ratings for this, not only because it's Red
02:13Sox-Yankees,
02:14but if Peyton Tolley especially pitches game one, I mean, I don't know if you're aware how loved that guy
02:19is here,
02:20but, like, what's your take on how do you think this goes?
02:25Yeah, I think all three games are going to be low scoring.
02:28You know, with the way that the Red Sox have manufactured runs this year,
02:31and the way that the Yankees are very still relying on the home run,
02:35I think it is going to be, and the way that these two rotations have pitched all year,
02:40I think it is going to be very low scoring.
02:43One or two runs kind of dictates it.
02:44Now, again, the Yankees and the Sox both hit lefties well this year.
02:47I know you know the Sox are top 10 OPS against lefties,
02:51so when you face Max Fried, even though he dominated that one game last year,
02:55you've got to be feeling good about that.
02:56But whether it's Tolley and it's Suarez, who I'm assuming is probably going to start game three,
03:01if there is one, like, you know, the Yankees, they've hit lefties well this year,
03:05but, again, two pitching staffs that have pitched very well,
03:08it's going to come down to the little things, you know, defense, good base running, manufacturing runs.
03:14That's something that the Red Sox have done very well this year.
03:16That's something the Yankees over the last couple years have not done well.
03:20But, you know, again, I think I have to trust in the Cy Young Award winner,
03:24and I've got to trust in Fried being very consistent all year.
03:27If it gets to a game three, is it going to be Cole or Rodon?
03:30Maybe it's both.
03:31I don't know.
03:32I mean, at that point, it's all chips on the table.
03:35But I would slightly lean Yankees.
03:37No bias there, just because I think they do have the better pitching staff.
03:41Well, Pat, sorry the Giants and Jets season is over.
03:43It was good while it lasted.
03:44We had a good little run there for a couple weeks.
03:45But, however, New England's got its own problems.
03:50Where do you think Drake May is right now?
03:52We just had a debate about whether Trevor Lawrence is a good comp for Drake
03:56or if that's insulting to Drake.
03:57Where would you have him right now in the hierarchy?
04:00No, it's a good comp.
04:01It's a good comp.
04:02I mean, right at, like, just off the top of my head,
04:03if I had to rank both of those guys, one through 32,
04:06in the starting quarterbacks in the NFL, I'd have them very close to one another.
04:09Like, I'd probably have Drake May at 11.
04:11I'd probably have Trevor Lawrence at 12.
04:13Two guys that I haven't been particularly high on in the past.
04:17Drake obviously proved a lot of that last year.
04:19But then again, when he's played great defenses, including the playoffs,
04:22you know, we've seen what's happened.
04:24Trevor Lawrence is a very streaky quarterback.
04:27And so, honestly, we look at this game on Sunday.
04:30I'd give the edge in terms of who, like, tail the tape.
04:32I'd give the edge to Drake May.
04:34I'd give the edge to Mike Vrabel.
04:35I'd give the edge to the Patriots.
04:37I'd give the edge to the Patriots to win that game on the road on Sunday
04:39because I just think coming back from Denver, I'm not really sold on Jacksonville.
04:45I don't think their defense is as good as last year.
04:47I think the Patriots' defense is better than last year's.
04:50I like New England.
04:52I'm sorry.
04:52Go ahead, Ted.

04:54So, do you think it's going to be the return of Drake May?
04:58Like, are we going to be – because I thought that –
05:00I looked at that second half of the Jaguars game and I just saw Bo Nix carve them up
05:06and I just kind of figured that this has a perfect opportunity to be a Drake May bounce-back game.
05:11Do you kind of sense that?
05:13I do.
05:14I do.
05:14Now, that being said, the Jaguars defense coordinator, Anthony Campanile,
05:18like, he's going to throw a bunch of different stuff at Drake May
05:21and kind of, I think, how the Seahawks got him, that's what they're going to try to replicate.
05:28But, yeah, I just think that, again, the Jaguars' pass rush isn't as dangerous, in my opinion,
05:33as it has been in years past.
05:34Now, again, they could turn that on this week and it might be a completely different story
05:38if they're able to get home on their blitzes.
05:40But I do think that Drake May is due – is in store for a bounce-back game.
05:45I know A.J. Brown is still out.
05:47But, again, I think Hunter Henry could have a big game
05:49and I think Matt Collins could have a big game because I look at the Jags' corners,
05:52you know, again, it's Travis Hunter and it's Monteric Brown.
05:55So, those – I think those are two guys you can beat with size on the outside.
05:58If they can get Mack into some one-on-one situations, I like his chances.
06:02All right, Pat, I'm curious about this game from a betting perspective.
06:06You've got the Chargers coming from the West Coast to the East Coast
06:09for a 1 o'clock start on Sunday, which historically I feel like is not a good spot
06:14for the West Coast team, but I feel like maybe the data is changing a little bit.
06:18But the Bills are favored by 7, and you've got an 0-2 Chargers team
06:23that I'm conflicted on because I thought the offensive coordinator
06:26was going to help that team.
06:27But then you bring in the succubus perspective with Madison Beer
06:30and Justin Herbert.
06:32And does the betting community ever factor in WAGs
06:34like when it comes to performance from quarterbacks?
06:38Because I just think Herbert's got his head in the clouds.
06:40And I just feel like 7 points, I mean, I feel like that's the easiest bet
06:43on the board is the Bills minus 7 over the Chargers.
06:46Oh, well, unfortunately, I hate how much I like the Chargers on Sunday.
06:51I think I – and I – yeah, again, they – I mean, they couldn't have –
06:56they couldn't stink more than a pile of dog crap in the last two weeks.
06:59Yeah.
06:59And you look at Buffalo, they shred Detroit.
07:02They shred that Houston defense.
07:05Josh Allen looks like the MVP right now.
07:07Like you said, if you watch the first two games, how could you not bet Buffalo?
07:11How could you not like Buffalo?
07:12I just think desperation is a hell of a drug,
07:15and the Chargers are going to be a desperate-ass team.
07:17Now, is that going to fix all their offensive line problems?
07:19I don't know.
07:20I don't know.
07:22They're going to have to get something going.
07:23And they lost their two tight ends, Kolar and Njoku, last week.
07:27So, honestly, McDaniel, you might see like old-school Mike McDaniel,
07:30whereas everybody's going with the heavier jumbo personnel the last two years,
07:34the 13 personnel.
07:35He might just go old-school where he was spreading everybody out in Miami
07:38and just try to hit you on a ton of crossing routes
07:41and force that Buffalo secondary, which does lack in size, to really defend.
07:45So, I hate how much I like the Chargers.
07:48And here is that one stat you were looking for,
07:50at least as it pertains to Jim Harbaugh, you know,
07:53with his time with the 49ers and now with the Chargers.
07:55When his teams go to the East Coast, he's 16-5 straight up,
07:59and he's 15-6 against the spread.
08:01So, I like the Chargers, even though I hate that I like them.
08:04But, Pat, real quick, I just want to follow up.
08:05The desperation is a big part of trying to evaluate these games, isn't it?
08:11Who needs it more?
08:12Which team needs it more kind of thing?
08:14Yeah.
08:15Well, I mean, again, you can make the argument that, well,
08:17why would Buffalo play any less hard than they normally would?
08:20Just because they're 2-0.
08:21Like, they're at home.
08:22They've got a rabid fan base.
08:23But I just think if you start 0-2, that makes the Chargers coaching staff,
08:29like, I don't know, like, I mean, you know,
08:31you guys can kind of speak to that a little bit, your experience.
08:33Like, if you're a head coach, you normally spend, I don't know, what,
08:3680 hours, 60 hours a week in the office and going over film.
08:40Like, is this a week where Jim Harbaugh is just not sleeping
08:42because he's literally up all night figuring out a way to correct their issues?
08:47Like, I think that plays a part in it.
08:48And I just think that, you know, again, in a grown-ass man's sport
08:52where you're violently hitting other people, like the Chargers,
08:55like, they're not going to play soft this week.
08:56They're not going to play without pride.
08:58And so I think sometimes we can overweigh that stuff,
09:01but they know that if they lose this game,
09:03the chances of them making the playoffs with the schedule they've got ahead
09:05is minuscule.
09:06So that's why I think you're going to get their best effort.
09:09Pat, there's a chance that they might, I mean,
09:12look at the next games the Chargers have.
09:14The Bills, obviously, this weekend.
09:14It's brutal.
09:15Then Seahawks, Broncos, Chiefs, Rams, Texans, Ravens.
09:21That's their next six, seven games.
09:23Insane.
09:26Yeah.
09:27And I'll let that sink in.
09:28I had them not making the playoffs to start the year.
09:30That being said, I didn't think they were going to lose to the Cardinals
09:33and the Raiders both at home.
09:35So I don't see a lot of those wins coming for them.
09:38But, you know, again, maybe they don't win this game on Sunday.
09:41It wouldn't shock me if they do,
09:43but I do like them to keep this within a touchdown.
09:46All right.
09:46Well, listen, our first guest we had today, Tommy Curran,
09:48depressed me when he compared Drake May's career trajectory to that of Trevor Lawrence
09:52and then said Trevor Lawrence would get to the Super Bowl before Drake did again.
09:56But I like our second guest, Pat, you,
09:58because you agree with me that this is a Drake May bounce-back weekend
10:02and he will become Drake May once again
10:04and all will be calmed down here in Patriots land.
10:08That's nice that someone agrees with me.
10:10Yeah, well, again, if the offensive line can block,
10:13if Will Campbell is getting beat off the edge by Josh Hines-Allen,
10:16then it could be a completely other day.
10:18But I don't know.
10:18Maybe I'm irrationally confident that the Patriots blocking will hold up.
