00:00I grabbed a stack of these placemats from the store the other day, and we're going to attempt
00:04to spruce up this boring light fixture with something that looks a little bit more special.
00:09Let's do it. I should be able to unscrew this part. Oh, it's very dusty up here.
00:19There we go. After plugging in my glue gun and waiting for it to heat up, I gave the glass
00:24fixture a really good cleaning because, well, when was the last time you cleaned the inside
00:30of your light fixtures? Then I grabbed my first placemat and got to work. I held that first
00:36placemat over the globe and ran a line of hot glue along one side of the placemat, staying on the
00:41upper half of it and working toward the center opening. Then I added the next placemat, overlapping
00:47it by about a third, and glued that one in place. Then from there, it was basically just repeat,
00:53repeat, repeat, repeat all the way around gluing placemats on top of each other. You also want
00:59to make sure that you leave the center opening in your glass fixture open and don't cover up that
01:04hole with your placemats. Also, really important here to notice that I am not gluing the placemats
01:11onto the glass. I'm only gluing them to each other. This means the existing glass fixture is really just
01:18acting as a base to hold everything in place and give the shade its shape. Isn't that a cool
01:23way to update a light on a major, major budget? I love that these placemats add a lot of texture
01:29and give this a really organic, dimensional, almost designer looking feel without actually
01:35replacing or altering the original light at all. This DIY starts at Walmart and the bathroom? I took
01:42an empty toilet paper roll and hot glued it to a wood round made for crafts. Then I took it
01:47out to my
01:48garage and gave it a paint job in all black. I set that aside and pulled out my Walmart placemat.
01:53Then I cut off about the bottom third of it. Using another wood round, I added hot glue along the
02:00edge
02:00and carefully lined up the placemat and the wood. Once the two ends met, I glued them together as well.
02:06I used a little more hot glue to bring both parts of this project together. And then I was left
02:12with
02:12the coolest ultra-modern table lamp that I can use to light up any space in my home.
02:18I have a light in my work area and unfortunately the shade fell and broke. Looking through my supplies,
02:24I found this burlap covered metal ring that fits perfectly around the light fixture. To give the
02:30light fixture some depth, I've pulled out 12 beads from my pile, two in each size that I had.
02:36I want to create strands of beads that I can hang off the metal ring. So I'm going to thread
02:41the 12
02:41beads from largest to smallest onto a thin piece of this jute twine. With all of the beads strung,
02:48it's time to add them to the metal ring. To hold each strand of beads in place, I'm wrapping the
02:54end
02:54of the twine around the ring and then I'm just going to use a little dab of hot glue to
02:58keep it in
02:59place. I've already gone ahead and put several plugs and hooks into the ceiling around the light
03:04fixture. So now all I have to do is slip the ring up over the light and then secure it
03:10onto the hooks.
03:11I'm absolutely loving how unique this boho chic light looks now. It's the perfect solution for
03:17this particular light. I picked up some placemats at Walmart and this pendant light conversion kit
03:22to update this portion of my kitchen that just needed a little something unique. Opening the kit,
03:28I pulled out the hanging portion because I'll need to trace this onto my placemats. I slipped a piece
03:33of paper under the placemat to protect my table and using a sharpie, I traced the socket all the way
03:37around. Using scissors, I cut this out and I repeated it on the second placemat. I removed this screw
03:44portion from the fixture, slipped both of the placemats on, and then replaced it to hold everything in
03:49place. Now to the kitchen. Anytime you're replacing a light bulb, it's important to flip the switches off
03:55and flip the breaker. You don't want to mess around with electricity. I removed the old bulb and replaced
04:00it with the end of the cable in my adapter kit. Then I followed the instructions for how to set
04:05the
04:05length and how to screw everything together. After adding a light bulb and shaping my placemats, I was
04:10ready to flip the power back on. And wow, now I have a totally unique modern light fixture over my
04:17kitchen
04:17sink. It really gave the space the personality that it was missing. Head to your local thrift store to pick
04:23up a woven wicker or rattan basket. Start this project with a paintbrush and some white paint to dry brush
04:30all over
04:31the basket surface to give it an aged look.
04:37Take a longer piece of jute rope and separate the weave on the bottom or cut through it to feed
04:44the rope through.
04:45Tie a knot on the inner part of the basket on the other side. Get battery operated puck lights with
04:54a remote off
04:54of Amazon. Two strips of Gorilla Tape and place them on the back of the puck light. Then place the
05:02puck light
05:02on the inner part of the bottom of the basket. Then hang this in your favorite outdoor seating area.
05:09There you have it. A cheap way to create your own easy DIY boho outdoor pendant light for your home
05:15for less than $10. I bought a set of bamboo plates and little lights on Amazon and I'm going to
05:23make
05:23something really cool for my bedroom. I purchased these bamboo plates that have a fluted almost flower
05:28look to them. They're nice and sturdy and they come in these pretty pastel colors. I also purchased these LED
05:35bulb lights. These are controlled by a remote and they change colors.
05:42So I want to change up the color a little bit. I'm using two different types of spray paint.
05:47The first is a copper colored metallic paint and then I'm going to go over the top with a little
05:53bit of gold
05:53just to add a speckle. This is going to match the decor in my room but these plates absorb spray
05:58paint really well
05:59so you could leave them in that pastel color or paint them whatever color you want.
06:04Let's take a look at these lights and how they work. They are just a nice bulb on the top
06:08but they have a flat bottom
06:09and this piece that opens. When you first take it out of the package you want to unscrew this piece
06:14and turn the light on. There's a little button on the inside there. Once you've turned it on
06:19you can screw that piece back into the light fixture. Now it can be controlled with this remote.
06:26You have a full range of color kind of flashing strobe lights and you can control the brightness as well.
06:32Now we're going to attach the light to the plate. To do this I'm going to use some double sided
06:37adhesive mounting strips.
06:40These are going to go along the outside of the light making sure that I can still access that cap
06:46where the light is
06:47in case I need to get in there. Then I'm just going to stick the light bulb to the center
06:52of the plate.
06:55To hang this on the wall I'm going to use one of my favorite products. These are picture hanging strips
07:00from Command.
07:01They are really strong Velcro and they work really well for lightweight items like this.
07:07So I'm just going to apply one big one to the back and hang it up on my wall.
07:28Now from here this is going to give me some nice ambient light on my bedside.
07:32Again I can use that white light or I can make it flash and do something fun with the colors.
07:38That's it. This was a really easy project to make these gorgeous light fixtures that are really lightweight,
07:44easy to use and add a ton of style to my bedroom.
07:49I also made a set for my daughter's room and kept the pink plates and she loves having the flashing
07:54colors in her room.
07:56Pick up a lamp kit and light bulb from Lowe's along with a tissue box from your closest bathroom.
08:02Starting with a single, unassuming tissue, take a pen or pencil, set it in the center of the tissue,
08:07and begin to wrap the tissue around the pen.
08:10It'll take a second to get the hang of it, but once you do you'll end up with a beautiful
08:14rose like this.
08:16A few dots of hot glue along the edges will help hold it together.
08:21You can skip this step if you want to leave the rose white, but I took some blush and applied
08:25it to the center of the rose.
08:26Then, I repeated that until I had dozens of these beautiful blush roses made of tissues.
08:32Screw a light bulb into our lamp kit from earlier.
08:35Then, using a basic plastic soup bowl, set the light inside and hot glue a second bowl on top of
08:42it.
08:42Make sure to use an LED bulb so it doesn't get hot.
08:45Now, take your roses, add some hot glue to the back, and begin attaching them around the sides and top
08:51of the bowls.
08:52Do this on both sides until both bowls are completely covered.
08:56Flip your switch, and you've got a beautiful rose pendant light that you can hang anywhere.
09:01I couldn't believe that I made this out of tissues and plastic plates.
