00:00Grab two Michaels crates to get extra seating in just 30 minutes.
00:04First, grab a stair tread from any local home improvement store.
00:08Place it face down on your floor and choose four caster wheels to screw to each side.
00:13Once your wheels are secure, this is the base of your bench.
00:16Then apply wood glue to the bottom side of each of your crates.
00:20Be sure to glue the long side of the crate.
00:22Place your first crate, glue side down onto the stair tread.
00:26Repeat this step with the second crate on the opposite side.
00:29Then apply wood glue to the top side of each crate.
00:33Make sure to also put it along the slats as you did with the first crate.
00:37Place your second stair tread on top of the crates.
00:40This will be the top of your bench.
00:42Insert screws into all four corners of your bench.
00:45This will provide more stability.
00:47Finally, stain, paint, or leave your bench natural.
00:51I decided to stain my bench with a charcoal stain and rough it up a bit for a more rustic
00:56look.
00:56I love the way this bench turned out.
00:58This has to be one of my favorite crate projects.
01:01It's fully functional and I use it for storage, seating, and sometimes I even roll it out to use it
01:07as a coffee table.
01:08The next time you're at Michael's, grab yourself some wooden crates, hardware angled top plates, and furniture legs in any
01:15style or design that you like.
01:17The next time you're at Home Depot, grab yourself two of their wooden crates, and then pick up four of
01:24their hardware angled top plates, and as well four legs in any style or design that you like.
01:32So to begin, I'm going to take my crate and using some 100 grit sandpaper, I'm just going to give
01:37it a little light sanding just because some of these edges of these crates stick out.
01:42There's some chipping of the wood just to smooth it down a bit.
01:45Then I'm going to use Hollow Hill from Country Chic Paint and I'm going to paint on this gorgeous green
01:51on my crate making sure that I get the insides and the outsides of the crate.
01:57Once I've done that and let it dry, I'm going to take some plywood that I pre-cut to fit
02:02to the size of the bottom of the crate.
02:05And I'm just going to give it a stain color with this maple gel stain from DecoArt.
02:11And I'm going to do that on both pieces.
02:13Once I've done that and all my paint is dry, I'm going to go ahead with this pre-glued veneer
02:18edging and using a little mini iron,
02:20I'm going to iron this on around the edge of the plywood to cover the unfinished edge.
02:26This is super easy to do. You just go around with the iron and there's a glue already on the
02:31back side and this just bonds directly to the wood.
02:34I can do it around the corners as well.
02:37And then once it's done, I just cut off the excess.
02:41So I'm going to do this on both pieces of my plywood so that I have a nice finished edge.
02:47Once that is done, I'm going to come in and do the sides of the veneer edging just so it
02:54matches the top part of my plywood that I pre-stained.
02:57Next I'm going to use some Gorilla Wood Glue and I'm going to put this on the side of the
03:02crate.
03:02So I want to make sure that the crate opening is facing out and then I'm going to be putting
03:08my wood piece on it,
03:10making sure that the stained side is showing through the bottom.
03:12I'm going to clamp it and let this fully dry.
03:16Next I'm going to come in with my angle plate and I'm going to put those at all four corners
03:21of the plywood.
03:23Once I have this fully attached, I'm going to go ahead and screw on my legs that I bought.
03:30Once this is done, I'm going to take my second crate and I'm going to add some Gorilla Wood Glue
03:35to that as well.
03:37And then I'm going to place it on top making sure that the backs are on the same side.
03:42I'm going to clamp this as well and let the wood glue fully set for about 12 hours.
03:49Once the glue is set, I'm going to go ahead and take my second piece of plywood and I'm going
03:54to attach that to the top using some small finishing nails just to tap that into place.
04:00With that, this project is complete and what I have is a cute, adorable little shelf to display some decor,
04:08books, plants, whatever I like.
04:11It's sturdy and solid and this project turned out so well and it's super easy.
04:16There's not a lot of tools involved and you can pretty much do whatever you want with this, paint it
04:22your own colors to suit your home decor and your style.
04:26Let's head on down to Michael's and we're going to grab us a wood crate.
04:29We're also going to need some pallet wood, so let's get that out.
04:31First thing we're going to do is grab a scrap piece of plywood.
04:34We're going to cut this the same width and same length as four of the wood crates.
04:39Once we got it cut, we're going to go to the scrap pile and grab some scrap wood.
04:42We're going to make the legs make sure they're all even at six inches.
04:46Next step is to take the scrap wood that we have for the legs and we're going to pre-drill
04:50and put them on our piece of plywood.
04:52Next, we're going to use a lot of wood glue here.
04:54We're going to put it out all over the area that we need on the piece of plywood and we're
04:58going to put that crate down.
05:00But not just the glue, we're going to use some finished nails to hold it in place.
05:04Once we get that first one on in the middle, we're going to put the next one on to the
05:08side of it and work our way down with the wood crates until we have four of them.
05:11Once we do that, we're going to get some primer and we're going to put it all over the wood
05:16on the wood crates.
05:17We need this because primer helps the paint stick and adhere to the wood.
05:21Without it, you might get some flaking.
05:23I did notice though, I didn't like the bottom of how the wood crates looked.
05:27So I did do a little trim piece of one by two pine and I put it on there.
05:31Again, I did use some glue to make sure it stays in place.
05:35Next, it's time for paint.
05:36We want to make sure we get a good high quality paint and this can be the color of your
05:40choice.
05:40For me, I went with white.
05:43It's what goes with the decor in our house.
05:45And I'm going to put two coats of that paint on there and I got to make sure I do
05:48get that trim.
05:49The one thing I don't need to do is the top.
05:51Once I get all that done, I'm going to go ahead and cut that pallet wood up and start splitting
05:55it.
05:55I just need small pieces.
05:57So I'll cut one side and some of them will have nails in them.
06:01So we're going to go ahead and pop those out.
06:03Some of the nails just come right out real easy.
06:05Once you get that nail out, toss it away.
06:07Next, I'm going to measure the middle of the top of our pallets.
06:10Again, we have four of them.
06:11And then I'm going to use a speed square to get a 45 degree angle because that's what's going to
06:16start our pattern.
06:17Take your first piece of pallet wood and you're going to lay that down and I'm going to use some
06:20glue spread around.
06:22But it's not going to be just glue again.
06:24We're going to use some brad nails.
06:26Put those in there and that's going to hold it in place until the glue dries.
06:29Next, we're going to go with that second piece.
06:31Again, do you see the pattern starting to merge here?
06:33We're going to put that down, use a few brad nails to hold it in place.
06:36And then we're going to put the next one.
06:38See, this one's bigger.
06:39You can alternate as you go down.
06:41Now, what I wanted to do was make sure that it went down, chose the piece I want.
06:46You can see that it left some of the nail holes because it gives a wonderful look to this decor.
06:50Just keep working your way down.
06:52Glue and brad nails all the way to the end.
06:55Once I'm done with the top, it's time to straighten it up.
06:57I'm going to put a guide board on and I'm going to take my skill saw and I'm going to
07:01cut it all the way down the edge.
07:03Being very careful to go slow and make sure I get that nice straight piece.
07:09Now, it's time to go ahead and cover all the edges with some trim board.
07:13And once I get that trim board, it's time to precondition the wood.
07:17This is very simple to do.
07:18You just wipe on this precondition because it is made of pine.
07:21And when you stain it, it'll get blotchy.
07:23So, I'm going to put this preconditioner on.
07:25And when it's ready and it dries for 30 minutes to an hour, it's time to put some stain on.
07:30I went with some dark walnut on this one.
07:33Now, watch this.
07:34Because I preconditioned the wood, it looks a lot better and it doesn't make it blotchy.
07:38I'm going to go ahead and use a towel to put this on instead of a brush.
07:41I'm going to put it all over the top and the sides where the trim piece is.
07:45Once I get the stain on and let it dry, the last thing we've got to do is put some
07:49polyurethane on.
07:50That's going to give it that professional finish.
07:52It's going to take two coats and you can do three if you want.
07:55That's going to make it durable and ready to go.
07:57Once it's all dried up, look at this.
08:00This thing turned out absolutely amazing.
08:03Just four crates and some free pallet wood turned it into this work of art.
08:08I couldn't have been more happy.
08:09But what I wanted to do was use it for a TV stand and it went great with a new
08:14TV I bought for the family.
