00:00So there are three Cs. First is change, second is communication, third is context.
00:05The most important part of communication is listening.
00:08And it's not just the active work of listening, it's also giving them that space to actually talk.
00:16Kailangan they feel safe.
00:17The parents, they have a role, right?
00:20Kasi sila yung nasa bahay, sila nagbabantay, sila yung pwede mag-impose ng rules.
00:24The schools also have a role.
01:17Dr. Princess Guirano ng Philippine Pediatric Society at isang Child Protection Specialist.
01:22Doc Cess, welcome back. Thank you for joining us.
01:24Yes.
01:25We are on record now, Doc Cess.
01:27Una sa lahat, as a parent, gusto ko rin maintindihan,
01:30tulad ng mga nakausap natin kanina,
01:32yung mga nasa, isip sa loobin ng anak ko,
01:35ano-ano ba yung mga major factors that play into the mental health of our children?
01:40Okay, so, ngayon sobrang laking parang issue, no?
01:44We talk about mental health so much these days.
01:51Or it didn't give me parang warning signs.
01:54So, I just want to say that mental health problems or even violence, for example,
01:59wala siyang one face, wala isang muka ang karahasan, for example.
02:03But if there are things that we should look at, for me, there are three things.
02:07So, there are three Cs.
02:08First is change.
02:09Second is communication.
02:11Third is context.
02:12So, ano yung change?
02:17Or pwedeng baliktad.
02:19So, we're talking about mga red flags na, no?
02:21Okay.
02:21So, any type of change in the normal or the usual behavior of the child
02:26is something that should make you think to look at the child more.
02:29Okay.
02:30Okay?
02:30Second is communication.
02:32Sometimes, pabiro sinasabi.
02:34Hindi natin sineseryoso masyado.
02:35Sometimes, it's the little things.
02:37Post sa Facebook.
02:38Yung may message nila sa inyo.
02:40Sometimes, maliit na pahiwatig na yun, eh.
02:43Those are things that we should look into.
02:45And third is the context.
02:46Ano ba yung environment ng bata?
02:48Right.
02:49Is the environment supportive?
02:51Is the environment appropriate para sa kanya?
02:54Is there exposure to certain kinds of bad things on the internet, for example?
02:59So, those three things.
03:05ah, may sakit yung bata niyan.
03:06Okay.
03:06She's depressed or something.
03:07It's just a signal for us adults around the child to actually pay a closer attention to the child.
03:15Nabanggit niyo yung communication, Doc.
03:16I'd like to focus on that a bit more.
03:19Yung advice natin, advice na nakukuha namin, mga magulang, from the experts ay,
03:24kumustayin niyo mga anak niyo?
03:26Kausapin niyo.
03:26Be involved sa buhay nila.
03:28Be that best friend na nasasabihan nila ng sikreto.
03:31Pero, Doc, as a parent, alam natin yung reality.
03:41What approach do you recommend?
03:42How do we penetrate that shell ng ating mga anak?
03:47I think, let's start with how the family is set up.
03:51Hindi ko naman nila lahat.
03:52I don't want to generalize.
04:02It's not necessarily wrong.
04:16One thing I've learned also from working with children,
04:20that the most important part of communication is listening.
04:24And it's not just the active work of listening,
04:28it's also giving them that space to actually talk.
04:32Kailangan they feel safe.
04:34Because sometimes, ang kulang lang is feeling nila pag nagsabi sila, mapapagalitan sila.
04:38Feeling nila pag nagsabi sila, nang maja-judge sila.
04:41So, part of listening is actually providing that safe space for conversation.
04:56But sometimes, like you pointed out, importante, makinig tayo, pakinggan natin mga anak natin.
05:00Hindi to interrogation.
05:02Right.
05:03Hindi siya interrogation.
05:04Makinig, makinig.
05:08Let's talk about yung inclination for violence, Doc.
05:14na yung how their children are changing.
05:17Masayahin to dati, mabait, malambing, clingy sa akin to.
05:20And then one day, yung anak nila, detached, mainitin ang ulo, and then ultimately, violent.
05:26Ano ho yung mga warning signs, red flags?
05:29And more importantly, when you start seeing those red flags,
05:40It's hard to mention specific factors, for example.
05:42But we do see some trends.
05:48Sabi nila, yung iba, exposure to violent content on social media.
05:52But what we do know is exposure to early violence,
05:57kung may violence in the family, that affects the child's development.
06:00It affects the child's thinking from a very early stage.
06:03Akala niya normal lang sakitan sa bahay.
06:05Normal lang sakitan.
06:05Sigawan, violence in the family, adverse events in general,
06:09have effects on the way the brain develops.
06:12But I think when we have these conversations about violence involving children,
06:21is not always violence caused by children.
06:24Because there could be, it is possible that these children who are involved in these kinds of events
06:32are actually children victims themselves.
06:34They might be coerced by nefarious actors or bad people online to do these things.
06:40And their brains aren't, they can't cope to these kinds of peer pressure in the same way that adults do.
06:53So, as parents, siguro, let's start within our homes, ano?
06:56Yes.
07:03Yes, yes. That's definitely one part of it.
07:07Pero ang usually ina-advocate namin, it's really a whole-of-systems approach.
07:11So, the parents, they have a role, right?
07:14Kasi sila yung nasa bahay, sila nagbabantay, sila yung pwede mag-impose ng rules.
07:18The schools also have a role.
07:20Sometimes I wonder, ano ba yung pinapahalagahan natin sa school, no?
07:23We teach lessons, but do we teach life skills?
07:27Do we teach mindfulness?
07:29And do, parang, uy, honor yung anak ko.
07:36Kinaka-proud ba natin yan?
07:38Pinopost ba natin sa Facebook yun?
07:40Right.
07:41So, those are things.
07:42Kasi children don't just learn from what we tell them.
07:44Children also learn from what we reward and what we praise.
07:48That's actually positive reinforcement.
07:50Ako, ang dami ko natututulan kay Doc.
07:52Let's talk about the school scenario, Doc.
07:58Kasi, as we know, mas marami silang oras na sinu-spend in school with their friends.
08:03Ano ba yung mga pressures, influences that may affect their mental health pagdating sa school scenario?
08:10Well, it's actually the same pressures as all other things, no?
08:14So, affected pa rin children, especially yung mga adolescents, the older children.
08:20They're very much affected by the feeling of belongingness.
08:23So, kapag ginagawa ng ibang tao, feeling nila compelled sila to do it.
08:27Feeling nila kailangan nilang gawin.
08:29Kasi ayaw nilang maiba, ayaw nilang ma-ostracize, ayaw nilang ma-others, no?
08:34FOMO.
08:35Yeah, FOMO, exactly.
08:37And I think what that teaches us in terms of what we can do as a community,
08:42as parents, as people who care for children,
08:45is that it's not just the child.
08:47Hindi mo lang tuturuan yung child to cope,
08:50but you also learn about the systems around the child.
08:54So, actually, there's a local study, no?
08:55In the Philippines, it's called the Safe Schools for Teens.
08:58And it's about sexual violence, not about violence in general.
09:01But the results are actually very encouraging.
09:04And basically, ang sinabi lang dun,
09:06there are very good outcomes if first you empower the child.
09:09You teach them how to protect themselves.
09:10You teach them life skills, mindfulness, self-regulation, emotional regulation,
09:14which are actually skills that we should actually learn either way.
09:18Second is, you empower the adults around the child.
09:22You teach them how to respond when a child is in danger,
09:26or you respond how to respond to a child who is in emotional need.
09:31And then third is, you allow for communication.
09:35So, pag itong batang to, kailangan kuhari ng psychologist.
09:37You connect the child to the psychologist.
09:39And those three things lang na ginawa nila had very, very good effects
09:43on the children in that community.
09:44Dok, pag-usapan natin yung grades.
09:45Kasi marami sa mga bata ngayon, masyado silang under pressure
09:49to perform well in school.
09:50Kasi nga, alam nila, my mommy will be very proud of me
09:53pag mataas ang grade ko.
09:55Or, yun yung flex.
09:56Diba?
09:56Yun yung flex, mataas ang grade.
09:58How should parents teach the value of grades
10:02or performance in school?
10:03At ganun ba talaga dapat siya kahalaga
10:05na pagtuunan ng pansin ng mga bata?
10:07I think the first clarification is,
10:11grades are a measure of academic performance,
10:14but they are not the measure of the entire child.
10:18Yun yung pinakauna.
10:20And, syempre, kasi sabi nga natin,
10:22their brains aren't very much developed yet.
10:24So, heightened yung emotion.
10:33So, how should you respond as a parent?
10:35First, ikaw yung calm.
10:36Kasi, ideally, well-developed na yung brains natin.
10:40So, dapat tayo yung calm.
10:41But, second also, again,
10:43it's reinforcing the type of values we teach children.
10:46And, that's not just for parents.
10:47I think it's also,
10:48it has something to do with the school structure.
10:50What are the things that the school reinforces?
10:53Sa school, kasi, very academic leaning, no?
10:57How about sports?
10:58How about socialization?
11:00How about teamwork?
11:01How do we teach those kinds of values in children?
11:04And, is there space in the school curriculum for that?
11:08Very well said.
11:09Let's talk about social media use.
11:10Doktor, pag-uusapan na naman ngayon.
11:12Stricter regulation,
11:13if not total ban sa mga social media platforms,
11:16or games, or messaging apps.
11:18What do you think of these proposals?
11:20Is it even possible to do something like that?
11:22And, kung sakali nga, effective kaya?
11:25Well, like, right now,
11:27in the news,
11:27nakikita naman natin,
11:29there has been some strides, no?
11:30In terms of policymaking,
11:32it's in the House,
11:33it's in Senate also.
11:35And, based on the experience of other countries,
11:37it is possible.
11:38What we might need more of
11:41is sustained political will.
11:44Because,
11:44hindi lang enough yung,
11:45you impose a regulation,
11:47you have to continuously enforce the regulation.
11:49And, why I think it's necessary,
11:53primarily,
11:53is because,
11:55ang magulang,
11:55kung talagang pibilitin,
11:57kaya magbantay.
11:58Pero,
12:00some things are beyond the control of the parents.
12:02For example,
12:03how the platforms themselves are designed
12:06are beyond the control of the parents.
12:08Ano man nabang alam ng magulang doon?
12:10So,
12:11ang analogy ko dito is playground, no?
12:13Now, social media, online world,
12:15is the playground of children.
12:17So, pag kunwari,
12:18kunwari din lang kayong,
12:19wala naman ako anak,
12:20pero,
12:20kunwari din lang kayong anak ko sa playground,
12:22tapos yung swing,
12:23medyo hindi safe,
12:24medyo parang malubang yung tornillo,
12:26at nahulog yung anak ko,
12:27sasabihin sa akin,
12:28well, dapat binantayan mo.
12:30But, at the same time,
12:31sasabihin tayo natin,
12:32dapat ayusin yung swing.
12:33So, in the same way,
12:34platforms should,
12:35which is the playground of children,
12:37platforms should enforce safe designs.
12:39And, it is the government's rule
12:41to actually ensure
12:42that those duties of platforms
12:44should be met.
12:46Ayan, sana nakikilig sila, no?
12:47Ito naman, Doc,
12:48may mga comment din tayo online,
12:50ang kwento ng isang netizen,
12:51yung grade 4 student niya,
12:52Rao,
12:53okay naman daw,
12:53nakikipaglaro,
12:54nakikipagkulitan after school,
12:55pero,
12:56bigla na lang daw
12:57nagkulong sa kwarto
12:58at nag-breakdown
12:59dahil daw sa bumagsak siya
13:01sa isang major subject.
13:02Halimbawa,
13:03ganyan yung sitwasyon, Doc,
13:04ano mismo yung dapat sabihin sa bata?
13:07I think,
13:08yun nga, no?
13:09Kasi,
13:09factor talaga dito yung brain development.
13:12Trying to make them voice out
13:14ano yung feelings nila.
13:15Okay,
13:16bumagsak ka,
13:17anong nararamdaman mo ngayon?
13:19So,
13:19bakit mo ito nararamdaman?
13:21And,
13:22sometimes,
13:22sobrang tempting for us
13:23to give them all the solutions.
13:25Pero yung mga bata,
13:26grade 4,
13:27grade 5,
13:27grade 6,
13:28medyo may sariling utak na rin yan.
13:29Alam nila kung anong gagawin nila.
13:30So,
13:31sometimes,
13:31just a listening atmosphere
13:33helps them.
13:34And then,
13:35bakit,
13:35bakit,
13:36bakit kanilungkot-tukol dito?
13:37Eh,
13:37kasi gusto ko mag-honor,
13:39kumari yung gusto niya.
13:40O,
13:40sige,
13:40nangyari na yan eh.
13:41Anong pwede natin gawin ngayon?
13:43Right.
13:44So simple.
13:45Ang daming natutunan,
13:46kung natutunan,
13:47ang daming natutunan
13:48ng mga manonood natin.
13:49I wish we had more time,
13:50but for now,
13:51maraming salamat.
13:51I hope this is not the last.
13:53Doko,
13:53napakahalaga po nito
13:54pinag-uusapan natin
13:55dahil we have to keep
14:00priority sa kanilang attention
14:02and all the things
14:03that they need to deal with.
14:05Dr. Princess Guairanod
14:06ng Philippine Pediatric Society
14:08at isang Child Protection Specialist.
14:10Thank you very much.
14:11Ang mga issue pinag-uusapan,
14:12lilinawin at hihimayin natin yan
14:14on record
14:15sa unang hirit.
