00:34you got that led zeppelin shirt and uh i did get a chance to one time interview uh john paul

00:39which was really cool nice very good yeah you know you know it's funny with zeppelin because we were
00:45just in ireland with kings of thrash and near belfast is where they did the one of the album covers
00:52um and you know i kind of missed zeppelin because of my age you know when i was getting into
00:58rock and
00:59roll it was kind of 1974 to 76 when i started hearing sweets bachman turner overdrive on the
01:08radio you know ballroom blitz the not fragile record you know you ain't seen nothing yet this
01:12kind of stuff so i was pretty young kid sticks lorelei and don't forget about kiss lady well and
01:18kiss started then kind of edging in for me more probably rock and roll all night but then for
01:24sure shouted out loud which was 1976 right from the destroyer album which is that's my kiss record
01:30right so point being zeppelin um you know i i didn't live near minneapolis so i heard rock and roll
01:39on
01:39wls am out of chicago on the school bus in the morning right and um so that was where i
01:45got my musical
01:45education and it's funny that next to all the stuff i liked was what is today called yacht rock
01:51right like basically 10 cc hollow notes uh j ferguson thunder island you know that so that's why i think
02:00i like yacht rock so much is because it's it's a it's the familiar ballad version of what i was
02:07growing up with next to the swede bto kiss and porter you know we heard all the yacht rock in
02:13our parents car growing up you know what it's great stuff man i mean it's like it's funny that
02:19kenny loggins and michael mcdonald are like the heroes you know what i mean they're they were like
02:23the the cory taylor and uh i don't know who else would be but like the guys that are like
02:29on everybody's
02:30record like the in demand guys to call you know uh you know it's it's surprising that that that uh
02:36yachtley crew played here in detroit not that long ago and i took my friend chris fain who used to
02:41be
02:41in slipknot who is a gigantic yacht rock fan i mean he called me up one time asking for tickets
02:47for
02:47hollow notes i'm like for for who he goes for me i love the hollow notes dude totally and look
02:52i pull
02:53off my shop i pull off my foreigner cup i got my kiss cup my iron maiden today i'm pulling
02:58off the
02:58if i went to see foreigner a couple months ago you know they're great as always and so funny
03:02jeff pilsen and a good friend from dock and you know he he's like the he's like the long time
03:07guy
03:08now in the band you know so he's the anchor guy so yeah the og of foreigner the og of
03:14foreigner
03:14yep exactly kind of sort of but anyways uh yeah well you got like how many projects are you working
03:19on
03:20now about 27 58 well i i'm the truth be known i'm finning it out um and just and it's
03:27funny how
03:28life just works this way right because you know i went through this very explosive season
03:33you know post megadath there's you know the lucid the nick menza film kings of thrash started uh i had
03:40diet you know there's just there was a lot right things are coming my way and and i'm a guy
03:44who gets
03:45on a plane and flies to poland flies to florida flies to wherever and sight unseen don't know the guys
03:52had a conversation heard some music sure i'm in let's go you know fly with the bass and plug in
03:57and
03:57let's let's see what we create um that's how i you know that's how megadeth started right i
04:03moved from minnesota with my friend greg we moved to hollywood meet dave a week later we're starting
04:08megadeth you know that's just that's to me you got to get in the room to be part of the
04:12conversation
04:14or maybe even make the conversation just like you and i are doing right you text me i said no
04:18problem
04:19let's do it next thing you know here we are so um that's how my musical career has been too
04:24just
04:25just say yes and get in the room and see what see what happens you know so but i think
04:29now you know
04:30with metal church coming into my my life here uh which started last year i just i just turned in
04:38the
04:38the latest ellipson soto record unbreakable to ratback records and joe who's the owner he um
04:45he said he goes hey um good i'll get this all put together we'll put it out he goes hey
04:50um
04:52want to play in the new metal church album i go fuck yeah of course yeah i said send over
04:57uh
04:57send over the tunes let me hear it you know and um the demos are you know basically it's what
05:03we
05:04hear is the dead to rights album is pretty much done written brian allen the new singer had already done
05:10his uh some scratch tracks on it which sounded killer i got to the phone with kurt vanderhoof who just
05:16lives over in california not far from me uh down the freeway i'm you know a new band was born
05:22and so you know metal church uh you know 20 26 i guess we could say right since the album
05:30just came
05:30out in april so um and you know it's really it's great i love you know kurt's been such a
05:36great guy
05:36and a good friend over the years i think the first time we played with them with megadeth we were
05:41out
05:42on the killing is my business tour with exciter they were on the violence and force album and
05:47we were doing killing is my business and we had two final dates at the end of that tour in
05:51uh summer
05:52of uh 85 1985 and they were up in uh portland at the starry nights and then the mountaineer ballroom
06:01up in seattle and uh metal church around the bill so super excited because the metal church album had
06:06you know the first that first album is just one of those it's one of those great records like the
06:12sex pistols never mind the bollocks like guns and roses appetite for destruction you know it's just
06:17that that debut album that is just flawless you know it's just awesome from top to bottom you know
06:25all killer no filler kind of thing so um you know that was my introduction to metal church and i've
06:31been
06:31a fan ever since so it's kind of like i joined one of my favorite bands yeah yeah super great
06:36yeah and then uh obviously you play songs off that debut record on stage how's that feel
06:42it's awesome man it's so i go over to kurt and i rock out with him a little bit i
06:47go over to his
06:47side of the stage you know after the show you know we're just grinning you know after our first show
06:53when we launched the band we played a festival down in uh mexico back in may and i just told
06:58him a good
06:59dude it is so cool to be in a band with you and play your songs and stand next to
07:04you and you know
07:04he said hey it's the same for me so just mutual respect of course um and it's just it's great
07:11you
07:11know it's you know we're we've grown up around each other in the scene etc um and i didn't realize
07:18how
07:18far back you know his you know uh his whole thing with when he was playing in punk bands in
07:26in san
07:27francisco i guess he was playing with one of the guys from the melvins and he had an apartment called
07:31the metal church and that's and that's where they'd all go party right it's like you know so uh
07:37he said lars would come over and you know they'd they'd freaking get everybody be partying and playing
07:42air guitar and and um you know so that and then he had to move to la and i think
07:48he said at one point
07:49he was talking to lars about you know joining his new band which would have been metal church you know
07:53so i guess lars could have been the drummer in metal church but he had to move to la and
07:58then he and
07:58james got together and they started metallica you know so i mean it's it's so funny and you can see
08:03you know i see the handbills when when um uh when um metallica were debuting jason newstead after the
08:12you know sad passing of cliff burden their their warm-up shows were opening for metal church at the
08:18country club in la you know so these guys have been friends they've been family for years you know
08:24for decades you know so um and of course we saw metallica on your birthday here a few three years
08:30ago yeah exactly yeah exactly so it's um you know and those guys have just been so great you know
08:37they've they've they've always they've always been great i mean and coming up here on the 40th
08:42anniversary of the passing of of cliff um yeah that's right so that's um people asking me of course
08:50about that since i played on an anesthesia pulling teeth uh track for um you know for silver linings
08:56records they they tapped me to do that a couple years ago and uh that was that was cool i
09:01i you
09:02know i i there's a player as a fan as a listener i hear you know metallica records with cliff
09:08but it
09:08wasn't until literally i was sitting right here in this chair i'm picking up my jackson bass trying to
09:13play anesthesia i'm like oh my gosh it's like i think they got the wrong guy i don't i'm not
09:18all
09:19if i'm gonna be able to play this because i couldn't get into the you know i play real clean
09:23you know and with a pick and everything and it's and and so i called aria pro and they sent
09:29me out
09:29one of his signature bases and his signature wah fuzz pedal and when i plugged that in i got a
09:36little
09:36marshal back here i plugged that out and went ah there it is you know that was that was the
09:41path
09:42in the cliffs world you know um you had to have the right vehicle you know with the bass and
09:48the
09:48pedal and and all that that piece of music is you know so once i got in there i'm like
09:53ah there it is
09:53okay and then i could kind of get into you know exploring how he played and what he was you
10:00know
10:00trying to say you know through that through that piece of music and you know pretty pretty ballsy having
10:06a bass solo on your debut album you know so uh so anyway yeah good good long history with with
10:13metallica you know and for me it's been all good you know and of course so you're coming here to
10:17detroit september 18th with the metal church and that's a pretty busy weekend louder than life is before
10:22that and i i gotta ask you the guys from megan out there playing will you stick around and watch
10:27them or is it like you know i i don't know i i i saw what i i look kind
10:31of look at like and like
10:31being an ex-girlfriend or something i'd be like no i am out of here but i don't know you're
10:35you're you're
10:35a different cat well you know i saw steve harris on the uh monsters rock cruise and he's great you
10:43know he just hangs out he's he just hangs out with everybody you know on the boat he's he's a
10:48cool guy
10:48and he's just very approachable and kind and everything so you know we were chatting a little
10:52bit and i said hey i'll see you louder in life you know i'm playing the metal church now so
10:56i was on
10:57the boat with ellison soto um back in whenever that was yeah april may may april whatever so um yeah
11:05i mean look to me i i don't care anymore you know i haven't been in megadeth now in five
11:10years and
11:10you know i've i've done so much more my musical palette is wide it's full i've got you know a
11:19whole new friend group and buddy group and you know i mean i'm in a new tribe you know and
11:24that
11:24doesn't negate you know the music and you know and all that yeah obviously i look i was just out
11:29for
11:29two weeks with kings of thrash playing yeah playing songs probably that megadeth won't be
11:34playing you know when i see them next week you know will i stay around and see you know but
11:39who
11:39cares i i don't mind whatever you know it's it's not my band anymore that that that group as it
11:46sits
11:46now is is not my megadeth you know so to me it's just it's it's dave's band and he's doing
11:52his thing
11:52and like i always said five years ago i wish you well you know yeah yeah yeah all i can
12:00think of
12:00is you standing on the side of the corner on the side of the stage like in spinal tap i
12:04do this
12:07you know i'm grateful for my time there the band wouldn't have happened without me you know i'm a
12:13founder of it i helped start it my me and my friend greg you know there's a long story that's
12:18why on my podcast and the david elson show i had greg canada been on there so he could go
12:22back tell
12:22the story um you know and sort of put some of the some of the early pieces together um and
12:30you know
12:30kind of tell the really full story of what really happened rather than through any one of our singular
12:37memories you know put it together um you know the you know you try to piece together what really
12:44happened i guess it's kind of like a documentary right you get a whole bunch of people to weigh in
12:47you
12:47kind of get the full all the color you know but um you know so like that was that was
12:53you know one
12:54part of the journey for me you know and i'm always grateful for it i'm you know like i said
12:59i was out
12:59doing kings of thrash playing you know those earlier records and you know fans loved hearing that in the
13:06way that we did it which i think is pretty damn good um and so there can be both you
13:13know so you don't
13:14have to hate one in order to love the other you know i i never understood that you know i
13:19i i have
13:20metallica and megadeth records you know i say one to be the other you know and so and i was
13:25in megadeth
13:26you know so for me um why not why not why not have all of it you know yeah check
13:32it out for sure
13:32you kind of touched on it but i guess uh expand a little bit on this are you kind of
13:38are you kind of
13:39trying to put all your eggs in one basket now or just a couple baskets as opposed to trying to
13:43spread yourself out then well i didn't try to spread myself too thin it just happened that way
13:48you know um and and i think you know life that was just the course of where it was it
13:53was like this big
13:55blooming onion right you know it's like it just blossomed open and all these new path pathways opened
14:02up and new friendships and musical friendships and so i i just went with it you know i i thought
14:07why
14:08not let's let's go have all of it you know yes uh all 32 flavors of baskin robbins why not
14:13you know
14:14um because when you're in one band you're very singular you know you have to be you have to be
14:19very singular in that in order to especially to start something and to really go for the gusto and
14:24have the success that you know like we had with megadeth you know you have to do that you can't
14:28be
14:28scattered you can't be in five different canoes you got to be in one one voice one team you know
14:36um so but now that you know i'm past that and so i got to have this season i've just
14:42had these last
14:43few years but now you know with metal church i like being in one group and and um i'm very
14:49active
14:50in decisions with the group and all that kind of stuff and and so i feel like it's a full
14:56use of all
14:57my faculties of music business all of it you know that i get to kind of bring my whole cachet
15:03of
15:04everything that i've collected over the years my experience and contacts and everything and bring
15:09that now into into metal church um so that we can we can be bigger and better together yeah i
15:16guess you
15:17just kind of hit the the nail on the head which was what i was trying to get at was
15:19like yeah yeah
15:20you're kind of now focused on just the one thing and it's it's metal church you know yeah and and
15:26there's a lot there you know we're we're booked through next year you know so um there's a lot of
15:32planning i think what it hit me it to me it just all came into focus so clear it wasn't
15:37just okay i'll
15:38play bass and some songs it wasn't that it was kind of like the whole vision kind of a multi
15:43-year
15:44plan a timeline just to me seemed obvious and maybe it's because i'm new to the group and i i
15:51also know
15:51the history um and seeing where i would love my friend kurt to land and and finish strong and have
16:01metal church held in high regard and you know it's always been a super respected light well-liked
16:08band um and the music i mean there's not a bad album in the catalog that i know of you
16:14know and
16:15they're all strong um so to me it's more about kind of just laser focusing and really sharpening
16:23you know the point on it you know so that it that it it it ends well and it and
16:28it's it's um you know
16:30i think we we've got a good start with this with this dead to rights album the new lineup um
16:35the i think
16:37we we sound good live brian allen is just a fantastic singer todd latori from queensberg helped
16:44him basically got him in the band he found him you know i guess he was out with brian saying
16:49with
16:49trauma and trauma was out on a queensberg tour and i guess he called the label and goes dude here's
16:54your
16:55guy this is your guy and i i agree he's he just nails it you know and in a way
17:01that the fans want to
17:02hear you know they want to hear david wayne like they close their eyes and they hear god's
17:06a rap and it's like oh my god that's it there it is you know he can hit the mike
17:11howe stuff it's
17:12he really does does all of it justice and i feel the same way you know i mean i always
17:16i guess sound
17:16like me but you know my i'm a big fan of of duke's bass playing those early records um his
17:24work in the
17:24band i you know um so for me um like you said it i get i get to be a
17:30fan and in the band at the same
17:32time and right which is really a gift you know hey let's uh switch gears here real fast um uh
17:38this uh bunker heights looks pretty interesting so so tell me about that i know you gotta there's
17:42some detroit boys in there with uh with vinnie dombrowski from sponge and of course you mentioned
17:46the lucid i just saw him the other day and also a violent jay from insane clown posse a couple
17:51detroit
17:51guys yeah well it's funny so when i saw you with the metallica show three years ago it was my
17:5659th
17:57birthday i guess right yeah um so uh it was november of that year so right after that i drove
18:03down to um
18:06god where do we do it ohio i guess is where we did it was a couple hours away i
18:11drove down there
18:12and that's where we shot my scene um i get to play i get to truly act because it's a
18:18very different
18:18character than if you would know me to be you know um um you know cop gone bad kind of
18:26thing you know
18:27what i mean like chicago pd sort of style you know you shot that three years ago yeah i did
18:33yeah
18:33that's how long this thing has been in motion so so drew fortier who is not only a great songwriter
18:39with the lucid he's an incredibly gifted um he writes great film stories he's a great actor um and
18:48he calls all of his friends you know it's it's i guess it's like if you're you know if you're
18:53um
18:54you know oh god i forget his name but you're the guy that played in rockstar
18:58the movie uh what's mark walberg yeah walberg the walberg right he's like mark he calls off his
19:04buddies you know what i mean it's like entourage right you get your all you bring all your buddies
19:08in right or adam sandler yeah you know you call your buddies and have your friends and so that's how
19:14drew is you know um but he's super talented um and so they they did a great job i mean
19:20it's all
19:21original content there's no ai stuff there's no library footage they shot everything from the
19:27ground up and it's it is really a polished horror film it's it's really good so yeah we're looking to
19:33go out and probably do some appearances for it you know some you know the horror conventions we're
19:36getting um there's some screenings and you know all that kind of stuff so which is which is cool
19:42you know it's a fun thing to do yeah i want to check that out for sure because uh you
19:46know i'm a
19:46horror movie junkie so i gotta i gotta be able to watch this it's right up your alley you'll
19:50definitely dig it you'll dig it and by the way speaking of things i dug just recently um have
19:55you seen rush on this tour i haven't um and i haven't had time unfortunately um i know you've
20:03been busy traveling around the world i have and i literally haven't had time when they were in la i
20:08i
20:08i missed it i actually had a friend call me about seeing him in you know 10th row madison square
20:15garden which i've you know i was like i can't i'm i'm on stage with metal church in europe that
20:19day you know what i mean so look i'm glad to be working i'm glad to be playing and doing
20:23my own
20:23thing um you know but but yeah i definitely plan on seeing have you seen them i saw them uh
20:30here in
20:30detroit about a week and a half ago it was unbelievable it looks incredible yeah it was great
20:36now i had um valerie franco drummer from spinal tap um i played with her at the rock and roll
20:43fantasy
20:43camp here with the alice cooper rob albert fantasy camp last uh last november and then i had her on
20:49my podcast and she was talking about annika uh who's now in in rush and um she spoke very highly
20:57i guess they're both kind of from neighboring villages in germany um and so spoke very highly
21:03to her style and her skills and disciplines of that's the kind of drummer you need to be to be
21:10in
21:11rush you know i think it's awesome man i think they totally made the right choice she looks cool
21:16it looks like they're having fun you know bands take their tolls on you on your relationships on
21:22friendships um sometimes getting away from them for a while you know the memory grows fonder and it's
21:29great to see alex and getty having fun and and um it's just it's just great to see it all
21:37back you
21:38know and i mean opening with xanadu i think is what i saw from la i'm like come on you
21:42know they did
21:44what i would want which is go back into the set list and pull out the deep dodge you know
21:4921 12
21:51xanadu you know all this stuff that guys like you and me grew up with you know and it's like
21:55yeah play
21:56that stuff you know now they played uh the show i saw they played uh the entire um uh um
22:02moving
22:03pictures they played 21 12 the the previous night so i mean what more could you ask for
22:08yeah and talk about you know i feel i i get it because i feel like we did this with
22:12kings of thrash
22:13we put the time in we deep dive we we spent the time learning the songs man we went deep
22:18into full
22:19albums so when i saw them doing that i'm like you know good for them they're not just phoning it
22:24in
22:24it's not just a cash grab it's not you know like it looks like they're really into it you know
22:29which
22:30is what we want to see right from anybody right artists and you know it's you know iron maidens
22:36seem like they do it you know metallica you know never you know no repeat weekends and stuff so it's
22:41like it's you've got the songs you've got the repertoire like do the homework like do you do
22:47your job you're charging that much money for a ticket these days and i know it's not the bands
22:51that set the ticket prices but it's like for that kind of money like put some meat on the bone
22:56you
22:56know what i mean so um it was great yeah it was great i was stoked to see that yeah
23:01no they played
23:02uh they played two sets you know like come on take a 25 minute break come on play the full
23:07record then
23:07after that it's incredible yeah yeah that's like what i saw pink floyd when i first moved here to
23:12to phoenix back in 93 they they played the the stadium here asu stadium and it was uh division bell
23:20i think
23:20and it was same thing right it was like everybody joked it's like you know our set flip the cd
23:25take a break come back the next one because i mean it sounded so good it sounded like a cd
23:30you know
23:31but um but i i love that man i think it's it's it's cool that you know that uh that
23:37that they're
23:38doing it i'm definitely gonna see it at some point if not this year i actually it won't be this
23:42year
23:42for sure i'm i'm too busy but um for sure in 2027 i definitely want to see it yeah well
23:48you are busy
23:49got a show coming up here uh on the 18th of september at the token lounge and then and then
23:54you got that
23:54metal saint tour which drops uh comes out i should say starts in november and then uh you also got
24:00your base warrior tour you got a lot of stuff happening until before the end of the year yeah
24:04this is kind of the you know there's a lot here you know as metal church is ramping up i'm
24:10kind of
24:10winding down some other stuff you know you know kings of thrash started as you know kind of a two
24:15-year
24:15concept and we'll see where it goes and it ended up being a four-year thing you know and i
24:20mean we
24:20finished really strong across norway the uk ireland we played the stone dead festival it was a great
24:27way to finish strong and now kind of just park that to the side here for a while i mean
24:32people
24:32the phone's always going to ring for that people are always going to want to hear me go out and
24:35play
24:35mega death songs you know so i'm not closing the door on that at all but at some point you
24:40kind of
24:40gotta give some you know that's what i said is it look this you know metal church records coming out
24:45we're gonna have a lot of touring for a couple years i really need to give that a fair runway
24:49and i want to
24:50give it a fair runway so that we can get out and do what we need to do um so
24:54yeah the metal saint
24:55tour us metal church armored saint coming up here in november we're doing the the uh western half of
25:02the usa um so that leaves the door open for you know more uh of that you know more more
25:08to come
25:09um and then um yeah it's not even announced yet but we you and we were talking about it so
25:16am i
25:16talking about here but yeah i've got a couple weeks of uh bass warrior which is my david ellison
25:21solo right with my italian band i call it bass warrior just because you know never stop just go
25:27out into warrior and fucking play always right but uh i do that across europe um so i'm gonna do
25:34two
25:34final weeks of that in december uh just as a way to close that up as well i i i
25:39had really good
25:40success with that we've been playing the countdown to extinction album top to bottom and it's just it's one
25:45of my it's one of my favorite records and it's certainly one of the favorite ones of mine in my
25:50discography um why is that you know i just we put the time in on it you know not not
25:58that we didn't
25:58put the time in on any other i mean my god rest in peace you know it was a year
26:01and a half almost two
26:02years in the making you know what i mean so like these these yeah it's not like we ever phoned
26:06any of
26:06them in by by any means you know but um but that was just a record that there was this
26:12conscious
26:14conscience consciousness in the band and our management as a real team i just have good
26:20memories of that really being a team we were really working like a band we were working like a team
26:25we
26:25each had our own role we each had our own lane everybody was bringing their best you know songwriting
26:31to the table their ideas we were collaborative you know really the 90s you know the rust in peace
26:38lineup as people call it menza friedman you know me and dave you know that those that that that
26:44tenure still created some of the most productive years of our musical output you know and um and
26:52there's a reason it was it was collaborative it was um we just you know we we we we sounded
26:59good
27:00together we were good together and uh so that's why to me not only are the songs outstanding on
27:06that record but it represents to me a a favored era you know that i really um enjoyed you know
27:14and the uh the success was i mean obvious it was huge yeah it was huge and so look that
27:20makes it easy
27:21to go out and play the record top to bottom you know what i mean is uh you know people
27:25know the songs
27:25you know and it's a very listenable uh record to play live you know when you play it there's not
27:31so much mosh pits and people just thrashing and stage diving it's you know like they would be with
27:36peace elder rusted bees or you know so far it's good so what this kind of stuff so it's it's
27:41a more
27:41kind of people are standing sitting listening paying attention singing along um and that is a really
27:50good feeling in the room you know when we're doing that so and i got a couple couple new places
27:55we're
27:55going you know croatia serbia ireland with it you know some some some new places so i i like you
28:02know to me i love putting flags on a poster you know countries the flags of the countries you know
28:08to me it's uh it's not so much about me going there it's it's just to say that see this
28:14music
28:15works everywhere you know this this is international global music this you know um that that to me just
28:23i i think it's just such a great statement for how far reaching the the songs are and and remain
28:29all these years later yeah it is pretty cool that you've had a chance to uh to tour the world
28:33playing music over and over again yeah right that's why i tell people you know every tour i'm on i'm
28:41like you know take advantage of this because one day it will be the last time you do it either
28:47you'll
28:48die or something that'll be it whatever you know but but you know or the you know covet hits or
28:53whatever the hell happens you know what i mean but it's like just just be thankful man that people
28:57still want to hear our songs even metal church you know we're out there playing these songs i'm like
29:02i'm watching people in the front row in those front rows especially when we hit like god's a wrath
29:06you know which is one of these great songs and when brian hits those notes on that chorus and i
29:12see
29:12people at this like you know men and women just like going oh my god he did it oh it's
29:17like you
29:17know seeing seeing the christ at the you know it's like oh my god there he is you know it's
29:23it's it's
29:24it changes people's lives man and that is such a cool thing that makes you realize you know we're
