00:02Architect Adriano Papilli has made a career designing stylish, sustainable homes.
00:08But in 2019, the Black Summer bushfires pushed his family and his designs to the limit.
00:14I was four and a half months pregnant and we had a two and a half year old.
00:18The fires hit and we were kind of stuck.
00:20Someone told Adriano really quickly that there's a boat if we want to get on it.
00:26We waded out to the boat.
00:27Max was on my husband's shoulders and I carried the bag on my head and my baby in my belly.
00:34While their home survived the fire, the experience inspired new plans.
00:39I think there'd be a lot of people in a situation that they want to return to their land and
00:43reconnect with their community but their home may have perished.
00:47I wanted to look at ways in which you provide more options for people to get back on their land,
00:52rebuild for themselves.
00:53The result is Casa Manana, a modular tiny home.
00:57It's basically just a stack of plywood sheets that can fit on the back of a one tonne ute.
01:05So it's very compact. That frame can go together in a day.
01:09So you could do up to cladding, you could get the thing waterproof within four days with a team of
01:14three.

01:22But experts warn surviving a deadly bushfire takes more than just the design of your home.
01:27The Rural Fire Service says preparation is key.
01:30On the worst days that we have, a catastrophic fire day, there's no home that will save you from a
