Fewer than 2 per cent of hotel rooms in major Queensland cities are accessible, report finds

A survey of hotel rooms in three major Queensland cities, has found fewer than 2% are accessible. The study assessed the state’s readiness to host the 2032 Olympics and Paralympics, and disability advocates say there is more work to be done.

00:02They're the big tourism destinations of the state, but beyond the beaches and the

00:08sunshine, they all have an accessibility problem.

00:12In Brisbane and Cairns it was about 2% of hotel rooms were accessible and in the Gold

00:18Coast about 1%.

00:19More than 30,000 rooms were surveyed in a report commissioned by Queensland's Peak

00:25Body for Disability Advocacy.

00:27There are about 760 hotels and we audited 170 of them.

00:33The report also found some hotels didn't support all types of disability.

00:38I personally don't stay at hotels because I don't find it accessible.

00:59The Deputy Premier says accessibility is an important part for planning for the Games

01:05and beyond. And the state government has been fast tracking accommodation approvals.

01:10You don't need 50% of the hotel to be accessible. It actually doesn't stack up.

01:17But he says it's a growing and viable market.

01:20I don't think Queensland was aware or awake to that, maybe even as little as two, three years ago.

01:25The disability community says it's not too late to start.

01:29That the building blocks are there. But I think what we do need is some focus.
