After years of drought, farmers in the Murray Mallee are having one of their best growing seasons on record. But the rain has also been a boon for invasive weeds, including one colourful noxious pest taking over paddocks and threatening crops.

00:02A sea of colourful flowers, but these gazanias are actually highly invasive weeds.
00:08Despite being so beautiful, they cost us daily in terms of economic yield losses in
00:15grain production systems, but also spreading into some desirable native ecosystems.
00:21Researchers are finding success controlling their spread with soil tilling and sprays.
00:26We are getting up to 95%, more than 95% control of gazanias compared to untreated controls.
00:33Farmer Paul Rudiger says while he's happy to be part of a trial to tackle the weed,
00:37it's also a clear sign of just how big the problem is on his property.
00:41I'm a bit disappointed they've chosen our place because that means that we've got the most gazanias.
00:45He's using heavy machinery to rip their deep roots out.
00:49We're going back to a system which was in the past, but that is the only way we think we
00:53can control them.
00:54Up the road, Paul Kaisler is also using farming equipment to kill them,
00:58but he says approving a new herbicide is taking too long.
01:02I think that needs to speed up in some way or another,
01:04else they're going to be across the entire state before everyone knows.
01:07Weeds like gazanias cost Australia more than $5 billion annually in agricultural losses and environmental damage.
01:14Sale of the plant is banned in South Australia,
01:17and local councils are running programs to remove or replace them.
01:20We still have people come through and go,
01:22oh, I'm going to put them in my garden.
01:23I said, please don't move them.
01:25I think that's some of the reason how they got here.
01:28Taking on a flower foe that's putting up a serious fight.
01:32here the pot.
01:32You can get a wave of heat,
01:36Sustainable limb equipment.
01:37We could deliberately cross the game when we get back to a style each video.
01:37It's extremelyouxousketting令 on the ground.
01:38I'd probably forgive myself maybe.
