00:00Detroit Lions 31, another spectacle put on by Josh Allen and the Bills, you know, which
00:08has basically been mostly the norm, well, not mostly the norm, the norm for mostly the
00:15last eight years.
00:17There was a time, the show will never have sounded older than my reference to a time
00:23in Bills history when it was not like this, ever.
00:28But you watch games like last night, and when you're not hooting and hollering, you're
00:37like, yep, this seems pretty much right.
00:41What a player, what a night, what a night for the organization and the city and the region.
00:47It's hard to continue to find new or different ways to talk about.
00:55One that sort of dawned on me watching the game yesterday, and when I woke up today, I
01:00had an appointment with Toronto Radio, so getting ready to do that, you know, like, what do I
01:08want to say here about this?
01:10You know, I mean, I wasn't in the building to feel all of that, so, you know, I don't have
01:16that to lean on, and I mostly am just thinking, thank God I don't live in Cleveland right now.
01:24Like, I just, we went through it, we went through it, I mean, so much of it, you know,
01:32Fitz is a part of that, and he's like a folk hero figure now with this franchise, and I don't
01:37know if that would, how different that would be if we weren't living the life we're living
01:42now with Allen, like, Fitz might be more caught up in the, you know, organizational ineptitude
01:48if Allen weren't so great and the Bills weren't such a contender year in and year out, but
01:54whatever, it was a long time, and I was thinking about Cleveland today, and like, I don't know
02:01what's worse, playing, watching the guy play, or listening to him talk, and that he has to
02:06talk because he's playing, like, but you're just nowhere, and that existence is so maddening,
02:13and so, there's nothing fulfilling about it whatsoever, it's a complete void, you're just
02:20shoveling your emotions into something that you know, it's just, your emotions are going
02:26to get eviscerated as soon as you pour them in, they're like, but they're gone, I don't
02:29even know, I'm dead inside, and we are, it can't be more opposite that, I mean, I don't
02:34need to focus on the Browns, but I mean, it's just, we know, we lived it, we talked about
02:40it for the entirety of that time, and it's just such, it still is, it's like getting
02:48struck by lightning over and over again, like, I know I'm going to get hit by lightning, I'm
02:53going to go, I'm going to the spot, I'm even going to hold a golf club, I'm going to get
02:56hit.
02:57Wait, is getting struck by lightning good in this metaphor?
02:59Yes, it's like, you're watching Alan, he's like, oh my god, this is electrifying, I can't
03:03even, I can't even explain what's happening, but I'm going to do, I'm going to do it again,
03:07when's the next game?
03:08I'm going to go, I'm going to go wait in the spot, and wait to get struck by lightning
03:11again.
03:11I think maybe Watson is being struck by lightning, and Alan is not being struck by lightning,
03:16but I, I guess I get it.
03:17I know it's bad, but it would be, it certainly would be a story, and it's exciting, and it's on,
03:21it's novel, and Alan still finds ways to do things that just leave you just, just blown
03:31away.
03:32Whether it's his technical aptitude in, you know, working guys open, I'm watching breakdowns
03:39this morning of the, it's not all Alan, it's some of it's, you know, how guys are lining
03:44up, the Kincaid touchdown, and what, the way Kincaid, you notice how Kincaid lined up a
03:50few times, he's sort of, he's not, like he's running straight up the field, but he's not
03:54in a three-point stance, he's sort of, sort of 45 degrees to the line of scrimmage, the
04:00edge guy thinks he's probably going to chip him, but he doesn't, and like, it's all subtle
04:05just to give guys defending that momentary, and that's all it takes, just freeze for a second
04:12and go to the wrong guy, and bam, and Alan is right on it.
04:16Like, he's freezing a guy with his eyes, this is the Kincaid touchdown I'm still talking
04:20about, sorry to get so into one play, but it's just, it's not all just athletic prowess
04:27with him.
04:28No, of course.
04:29There's so much that is happening, and he just looks, I'm sure he'll be defended at some
04:36point, but he looks as hard to defend as any player I've ever watched in the league.
04:40It's not all athletic prowess, but a lot of what he's able to do stems from it.
04:49I mean, even last night, he comes out running against Detroit, and I think the rest of the
04:55night is Detroit not being sure.
04:58Like, do I try to go get him?
05:01Do I back up?
05:02You had a play, there was a play in the Baltimore game like this, against Indianapolis, that
05:06this play last night remind me of, where Bills are going left to right on TV, and Alan's
05:11coming around the right end, and he starts to take off, and the Lions player who's on
05:16a receiver, almost just like he's pretending not to notice it.
05:19I really don't want to deal with that.
05:21I'm just going to run up the field with this guy, even though, like, they, I thought the
05:26Lions...
05:26I did my assignment.
05:27I did what I was supposed to do.
05:29My BF, that's great, it's going to be good.
05:30Not my fault, yeah.
05:32I thought the Lions were game early.
05:35Like, they were, they tried, Hutchinson, like, they tried, and he was just too much.
05:42And then as the night went on, I mean, as the night went on, Detroit started to score
05:47and, you know, play ping pong with the Bills and keep it interesting.
05:50You know, it was a 10-point game a couple times, and, you know, like...
05:53But what the Bills are capable of, a lot of it isn't possible, unless Allen is the player
06:02he is and the threat he is with his legs.
06:05And as incredible as every one of these games is, and here's last night that shows up, and
06:13he is just going for it, you know, like, he turned 30, you know, like, it's year 8 in
06:19his career, I don't know, doesn't seem to matter yet, like, he's just...
06:24Year 9.
06:25Year 9.
06:25Is it?
06:26Yeah.
06:27McDermott had 9 years.
06:28Yeah, you're right.
06:29It doesn't seem to really matter at all yet.
06:33Like, he, you don't know how many hits are in that body, like, how many times he just
06:38gets up.
06:39When does he not get up?
06:40But he is still 100% that player.
06:45He's barreling into the wreckage.
06:47And these teams, I mean, Campbell basically admitted it at halftime, like, we can't really
06:53stop him.
06:54So we just have to not jump off sides on offense.
06:57We have to, we have to limit the small S that he said that was getting them beat.
07:02And, you know, in the second half they were better, but that's what playing against Allen
07:08and the Bills is.
07:09And, you know, at times it looks like they're toying with their opponent.
07:13And I don't know if that was so much in evidence last week, but it looked like that last night.
07:1845 degree angles.
07:20You know, a couple of the Allen, the Knox touchdown is, I mean, if they ran the same play five
07:27times
07:28and the challenge was no one player can score twice, they would still be fine.
07:35Yeah, that play, I think, I only saw the one, I've seen the replay a few more times and it
07:42didn't stand out to me like it did the first time, but I thought he had Knox and Latu and
07:47Kincaid on that play.
07:49All on the right side.
07:50And he could have run in.
07:51Right.
07:52That's what I'm saying.
07:53It's just like, what?
07:55What did you say?
07:56Okay.
07:57Pick a guy.
07:58And he did.
07:59And he picked Knox and, you know, it worked.
08:02And he picked Moore the same way when Moore got hurt.
08:05Yeah.
08:05I think.
08:06That's right.
08:06Yeah.
08:06Because he could also have scored himself.
08:08I think so.
08:09Yeah.
08:10Is Allen hearing a little bit of, because there's a little bit of this on Twitter.
08:13I don't know if it's always been there because I try to avoid it, but I noticed like this,
08:17this year so far, there's like, oh sure, just go ahead and score yourself.
08:21There's a James Cook meme where it's Ralph Wiggum jumping through a window.
08:26Like, I don't need a touchdown.
08:27You take them all.
08:28And maybe he's a little bit self-conscious of that.
08:31Yeah, he's still scoring two touchdowns a week anyway.
08:33Right.
08:34Right.
08:34So far, but.
08:35But he could have had four probably if he really.
08:37If he wanted them all, he would score them all.
08:39Right.
08:40That's how much of a joke he makes these games look.
08:42Yep.
08:43And so I think Knox was like, all right, good for you.
08:47Take it.
08:47And then Moore was, I mean, it's a makeable play.
08:52Yeah.
08:52I think he should have caught it, but he didn't.
08:54And, you know, he got hurt as a result.
08:56I don't know if he would have gotten hurt anyway, if he'd caught the ball, who knows.
08:59Uh, but yeah, I mean, it, it, it is really, it's, it really stands out when you have a
09:09play like that Knox touchdown where you could do almost anything you want and it, and it's
09:15going to work.
09:15It's like, it's all right.
09:16Like how inept was Detroit?
09:19How good was your play call?
09:21Whatever.
09:21I mean, they just, everybody just beat their guy and like, Hey, we're all open.
09:25Um, do whatever you want.
09:27Like dealer's choice.
09:29Like, Holy cow.
09:31You really, I'm not sure there's another team in the NFL that really looks like that.
09:35I mean, there, there are Lamar Jackson games where I feel like he has options and picks
09:42his favorite and last couple of years, hasn't really wanted to run like before.
09:46Um, who else?
09:49I mean, there are Kansas city, everything looks pretty hard when you watch the chiefs, although
09:54they often get there, it still looks pretty hard and there's really no other team that
09:59kind of resembles the bills in this way where Allen's strengths are so profound and so huge
10:10that really like, I think, I think last night was a perfect example of it because Detroit
10:15undermanned Detroit.
10:17They wanted to see if they could hold up and by 14, nothing going on 21, nothing like that
10:23was not going to happen.
10:25And they knew it.
10:25And then what do you do?
10:27Then they lose another defensive back, you know, like Hutchinson's walking around.
10:31They kept talking about his being tired.
10:33Maybe he was tired, but he looked like he had the worst back injury of all time to me.
10:36He was moving very slowly a few different times.
10:40He's really good.
10:41Yes, he is.
10:42But when he was, you know, affected middle of the game or so, I don't know, they kept
10:47talking about how tired he looked and I kept thinking, has he got a back injury?
10:51Like something's wrong with him.
10:53But then he would put his hand down and sprint.
10:55He'd race Allen, you know, step for step to the sideline.
10:58And there's the one play where Allen's able to throw the ball away.
11:01And I think the lions were just like, you got to be kidding that that was possible.
11:04Right.
11:04Hutchinson, I think he even said, come on, I got him down.
11:06What are you going to do?
11:07And he didn't.
11:08And he didn't.
11:08Yeah, right.
11:09The replay showed that he had not gotten him down.
11:11Well, there's every reason to revel in the night.
11:16And that's not just the Bills play.
11:18It's the stadium to, I mean, it was like a perfect night.
11:21I would think almost everybody there that really attaches emotionally to that team in
11:29these games will maybe never forget it.
11:31You know, first time in there for a regular season.
11:33That's what I think.
11:33Yeah.
11:34I mean, you indelible, you, you, you, you had, you know, they didn't get there, but
11:39the game started and you might've been like wires might've been tripping in your brain
11:43about the new England playoff game.
11:45Like, are we, are we just going to score every time they have the ball?
11:48Is that what's going to happen here?
11:50Uh, they were just so good.
11:52And you know, here's to fast starts because what really happened, I mean, they got out to
11:57a 21, nothing lead and as game as Detroit was, they just could not come all the way
12:02back.
12:02They got within 10 a couple of times and you could have, you know, the collar couldn't
12:06get, could have got a little tight.
12:08Like, Oh, I really could use one here.
12:09And then the bills would eventually get it.
12:11Like the, the closest it came is both teams.
12:14I think when three and out or not three and I, the bills maybe got one first down, but
12:18they, they traded punts when it was maybe 34, 24.
12:24And then finally like punt, like they held the lines.
12:27The bills got the ball back.
12:28They punted, held them again.
12:30And then they went down and made it 41, 24.
12:32And that was pretty much it.
12:34Um, that was as nervous as you, I think could really reasonably get.
12:39So if I, if I, if I give it back to them again, it's a 10 point game, but it
12:45never materialized.
12:48It kind of did, but they, they, they, they flamed out and that's where, again, like the
12:52defense, as much as I think you still, I mean, it's 31 points, you know, two weeks in a row
12:59here, um, very open receivers, like a lot of reasons I think to be worried about, you
13:05know, are they going to get buttoned up on that side of the ball, but when they needed
13:09it, they made, you know, Dion Walker comes to the rescue or Gregory Rousseau come to, they
13:14just, they made timely plays on that side of the ball and snuffed out, you know, opportunities
13:21that Detroit had to make it a really competitive game.
13:24I mean, I couldn't have enjoyed it more and, you know, I liked that Detroit kept it interesting
13:30and didn't just be so buried that we saw backups in the second half.
13:36I mean, they, St. Brown is so good.
13:39Gibbs is so good.
13:40I mean, golf made some great throws in the game.
13:42Like really, there's still a lot to talk about with the Bills defense.
13:46I'm guessing that any calls we get today will be about their problems and like, who
13:51knows, but defensively, there's still, there's a lot to talk about, but that Lions offense
13:58has a lot of talent.
13:59Um, they're down, what they were down three offensive linemen and maybe that showed there's,
14:05I mean, no, uh, just to say it, like I'm in no mood to dampen the spirits because
14:12like last night again is just one of those many in recent years, great Bills experiences
14:19for the fans.
14:21It's the time of year when we've done this a lot.
14:25Like we've, we've had today in fantasy, the, the common, the most common conversation seems
14:31to be, and this is a conversation we brought up with almost literally every guest we had
14:36in the summer is, well, should you draft Josh Allen?
14:41And it seems like the community today is sort of either capitulating to it, the idea or boasting
14:47that they did it.
14:48People who did it.
14:49What do you mean?
14:50Should I draft this guy?
14:51Are you crazy?
14:52People are raising their hands that I did it.
14:54I drafted Josh Allen in the second or even the first round in certain drafts.
14:58Like we're not there yet.
15:00You know, like every other one of these quarterbacks that went six rounds later has played one game
15:05and what Allen is doing is historic and it's incredible.
15:08And if you drafted them, you're, you know, over the moon, but it doesn't have to be yet
15:13that either in that particular context, which is narrow or the league at large, like that
15:18they're just going to, it's just going to be their year.
15:21Maybe it will.
15:22Yeah.
15:22But I'm the type to feel like talking like that when it's almost what five months away
15:29from the Superbowl is, I don't know.
15:33It feels a little bit much to be like, yeah, this is going to happen.
15:37Um, especially for me on the air, I'm, I'm reluctant to do that.
15:41No, sure.
15:42It, you know, the, the, the first few weeks of the season can be completely misleading either
15:50way, like, you know, positively or negatively.
15:53Um, we've seen it go both ways.
15:55I mean, um, but what, what, what I think is really fascinating though, like thinking about
16:01how everything unfolded in the last 10 days here.
16:05Um, you know, we, we had the, the opener and, you know, Allen telling the broadcast crew,
16:12it feels different.
16:13I'm expecting Brady to be more aggressive or whatever his exact words were.
16:17And we talked with Deion Dawkins about that.
16:19And here we are, whether it's out of necessity because they are worried internally about their
16:26defense's ability to stop people, or it's just Joe Brady wants to make a point that he's got
16:32the best quarterback on the planet and we are going to just, we're going to try to knock
16:37you out early and, you know, worry about whether you can catch up, which is kind of what yesterday
16:42really ended up being, um, they are pushing, they are leaning into Allen that you're not
16:52hearing a lot of, we got to take stuff off his plate, but, but it is, you know, and it's
16:58all of it too.
16:59Like you opened up here talking about his running.
17:01I mean, he was running yesterday.
17:03Like it was, you know, 20, 20, 21, but he did, there's no, there's no, uh, breaks on that
17:10part of it and the downfield game is all there.
17:14Um, you know, I, I do feel like, I don't know if this actually tracks.
17:18I haven't looked at like the splits on, on yardage and how the series all went in the
17:23second half.
17:24But I, I do think DJ Moore, despite his not even making a catch yesterday, it's impossible.
17:30I think to underestimate the impact he has on them as I thought their passing game got
17:36a little harder in the second half when Moore wasn't on the field, it looked, it looked
17:40more like last year.
17:41I mean, they got, they, they certainly got enough done, but it just didn't seem as easy
17:47to me.
17:49So, you know, that's anecdotal.
17:51Again, I don't have the splits broken down.
17:53I had the same thought.
17:54Um, but I think a lot of people might've thought that I'm only cautioning cause that, that can
17:59be misleading.
17:59You know, you, you, if you came out of week one going, well, more boy, the catch is sure.
18:03But look at how he froze the safety on this play and like all this other stuff that's
18:08sort of, you know, in the sidecar along with his production.
18:12And so you see him off the field.
18:15Anyway, it's just to say that bear is watching.
18:18Um, but man, they are, they're humming and they may have to keep humming with the state
18:24of that defense right now.
18:25Well, enter Keon Coleman, six for 63 on six targets.
18:30Like he was, he was there for them.
18:33Reliable.
18:34And it looked like they might not have, who else went out for a minute and then came
18:38back?
18:39Well, he did.
18:40Oh, right.
18:41It was Coleman.
18:42That's right.
18:43Cause for a minute it looked like Moore had left and maybe Coleman, I mean, that was one
18:47of those where it looked bad on the field and then he missed like one play.
18:50Yeah.
18:51He goes down after Moore had left the game already.
18:53And my, I think I said out loud in the living room, okay, time to call Brandon Cooks.
18:59He just worked out with Baltimore.
19:00Like you might want to get on the phone.
19:02And the game wasn't that late either when all that was starting.
19:06Let's go to Joe here.
19:07Hi, Joe.
19:09Gentlemen, how are we doing today?
19:10Great.
19:11So Bulldog, this is really going to kind of focus on you.
19:15I know it's a little bills, little papers, but a lot of the calls earlier today were talking
19:20about that the new stadiums, the house that Allen built.
19:23And I think that's undoubtable, but you talked about early in the show, first couple minutes
19:28about the shows never sounded older when you bring back the old days, the bad days.
19:32I remember the days where Rex Ryan was bringing IK and a poly up to be a captain against the
19:38jets because he broke, you know, Smith's jaw in the locker room and then they cut him.
19:43And I really wanted to give Sean McDermott a lot of credit as well, being such a good coach
19:48over the years, really being the right coach at the right time.
19:51And I think that, you know, how that might be with your son, Owen, and all the development
19:56he went through as a goalie, you know, you need the right coach at the right time, pull
20:00at the right strings, but then now in comes Joe Brady.
20:04He's going to kind of pick up where, you know, McDermott left off and, you know, similar
20:08thing with the Sabres.
20:09I had Ralph Krueger putting Jeff Skinner on the fourth line for, you know, all that time.
20:14And then in comes Don Granato, being the guy that he needed at the time.
20:17And then here's Lindy Ruff, hopefully being the guy that can, you know, continue to get
20:21us over the hump.
20:22So, you know, excited for Brady, but also wanted to give McDermott a couple of flowers
20:26because, you know, he was monumental in this as well.
20:31All right.
20:32Yeah, fine.
20:33I mean, I, I have, I'm not going to balk at that.
20:35Um, but I, I think Brady is, you know, he's having a, what a start.
20:41He's the first coach in Bill's history, 2-0 to start his career.
20:46So, um, and not only that, he's doing it absolutely the way, like if he had a business
20:53card, like whatever phrase you want to come up with, put the ball down, uh, you got to
20:59play us, whatever, whatever phrase you want that, that isn't a holdover from McDermott, he's
21:04living up to it.
21:04Like he, he, they're absolutely, I mean, they, they have, they have the league, you
21:11know, to themselves last night.
21:12They're the first team out of the box with, you know, 2-0, um, in the year, but so they're
21:18the talk of the league.
21:19But I think if this game had been played on Sunday, it'd be the same kind of thing.
21:22Like Allen is just again in this, Hey, no one's ever done this in this timeframe or this
21:28in that timeframe and all this stuff.
21:30And so Brady certainly deserves a ton of credit for what's going on.
21:35Yeah.
21:36It looks great on him right now.
21:38I mean, needless to say how they're playing, how they're, you know, what they're doing.
21:45I don't mean, I mean, those are two different things.
21:48Like it's not just their results, but it's also like, this has been what so many fans have
21:54been begging for, from the bills for the last few years.
21:58And one of the biggest questions of the summer was whether Brady has another side to him.
22:06Like, is there, is there something about how this is going to look that we're not expecting
22:10or we're expecting it because, you know, we think that Sean McDermott was reluctant to
22:17certain facets of their offense or how they played anything like that.
22:20And now you're two games in and I mean, they're, they're really cooking the Houston win or the
22:27Houston performance on offense does more for me than last night does because I think, I
22:35think any bills team over the last eight years would have torched that defense.
22:39I mean that.
22:40Yes, I agree.
22:41Even the lions were saying it.
22:42So everybody agrees that that was just like a mismatch and you know, that, that won't
22:48be every week, but you do what you need to do when it's like that and just sort of destroy
22:54them.
22:54And that's what happened.
22:55The Houston one is more interesting in like, all right, I'm not sure that was supposed to
23:00happen.
23:00We'll see what happens with the Texans playing Cincinnati on Sunday and whether the Texans look
23:06like they looked last year or whether the Bengals, a capable team can do the same kind of thing
23:10to the Texans.
23:11That's what it is in the NFL.
23:12You're always kind of, it's always so fluid.
23:14You're moving the pieces around based on how it's going, you know, in other, other teams,
23:20other situations, but could not have asked for a better start or a better night last night.
23:26Everything included.
23:28We will talk to Sal Capaccio next.
23:30Joe Brady is scheduled to speak around three and we'll try to have that live for everybody.
23:36We'll talk to Aaron Williams, who is our regular Friday guest this year at four o'clock.
23:43And again, Bulldog, unless you want to take this from me or join me in it, at least I'll
23:48be your fantasy expert quote expert analyst today in case anybody has anything.
23:55Okay.
23:55Anybody.
23:56Cause I don't, I don't have, you don't have a team.
23:58I don't, I do, but you don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, you don't, you didn't go
24:02to one draft, you didn't do one draft, but you know, there's a lot to Nico Collins is
24:07going to miss.
24:08Yeah.
24:08That's what it sounds like.
24:09Zay Flowers sort of practiced Brock Bowers, maybe sort of practiced.
24:12So there are some tough decisions.
24:15Sal Capaccio.
