Have the Patriots reached a season 'fork in the road' already? Wiggy is doubling down that Sunday is MUST WIN for Patriots- with Jaguars/Bills incoming. Agree with Wiggy? Truly a Must Win, or is it a "Must Look Good" game?
Transcript
00:00When I said it, like, oh, why would you say that?
00:02Well, that might be me.
00:03Like, I'm not willing to declare it a must win.
00:06But your next two games, you're going to be the underdog.
00:10Uh-huh.
00:11So what part, like, when you say a must win,
00:14because it looks at how important that game is
00:17and what that game potentially might mean to your team moving forward.
00:21Well, it's a 17-game season, so I am.
00:25So 0-4, you feel good.
00:270-4, I would not feel good.
00:31Okay.
00:31But I'm going to wait to complain about it until the team is 0-4.
00:36And then, I mean, listen, it's a very important football game.
00:41I also was very comforted listening to Brian Hoyer on this show yesterday
00:46because Brian Hoyer is willing to declare it a win.
00:50So I have confidence heading into it.
00:53But I understand.
00:54Listen, for you, not only is it a must win,
00:57but it's a fork in the road.
00:59Oh, yeah.
01:00You've declared there to be a giant fork in the road.
01:02Because I don't know what the number is.
01:03Teams that start out 0-4, I don't know what the playoff number is
01:07and how many teams make the postseason when a team starts off 0-4.
01:10Well, 0-4 is when you got the very famous,
01:15we are on to Cincinnati.
01:16Am I correct about that, Curtis?
01:18No.
01:18That was 1-3.
01:191-3.
01:20Okay.
01:20Yeah, that was after they lost to Arrowhead,
01:22and that's when Mike Giardi asked Bill Belichick about Tom Brady's age.
01:26According to AI Overview, an NFL team starting 0-4
01:30has historically made the playoffs less than 1% of the time,
01:33with the only team doing so in 1990.
01:37Okay.
01:38There you go.
01:38That's my point.
01:39So you may be on to something.
01:43Like, maybe it is a must win for this football team.
01:45And only because, and I say part of it, is because of who you play after.
01:49If you had Tennessee and the Dolphins, you would be like,
01:55all right, well, okay, if they stumble in the road,
01:56they can win their next two games.
01:57With the outcome and the—
01:59And I'm sorry, they were 2-2 on to Cincinnati, not 1-3.
02:02Okay, so yeah, so even better.
02:04Even better.
02:04Yeah, even better.
02:05With the outcome of Week 1 and the outrage that's followed,
02:10it's, of course, a must win.
02:12Whether or not you think it's going to affect the rest of the season,
02:14it's going to affect Drake May in the way in which people look at him.
02:18Like, that's more important to me than the actual score
02:21at the end of the game on Sunday.
02:23It's the fact that we've seen such outrage against Drake May
02:27after one week of football, and if he continues down that path,
02:31you're going to look at a snowball effect.
02:33Well, that's because you're all bailing on him.
02:35I'm not bailing.
02:36I'm just presenting actual facts, not opinions, facts, right, Wiggy?
02:41Yeah.
02:41That this guy looks like, and I'll use it again, a fall from grace.
02:46I think a lot of people might not.
02:48That really bothers Scheim.
02:49I know, I know, but I love you.
02:51Isn't it, instead of a must win, isn't it just a must look good?
02:55For Drake May, yeah, definitely.
02:56But it's still a must win.
02:57Well, that's why I said I care less about the score at the end of the game.
03:00I care more about what Drake looks like.
03:01But it's impossible, sorry, it's impossible to look good against this team
03:05and not win.
03:06No, I'm saying, like, imagine if what happens last time you play this team
03:10and Romandre fumbles at the goal line when you're trying to go up instead
03:13and you lose the ball and you lose the game because of that.
03:15Yeah.
03:16That's not a Drake May issue, especially if he plays well.
03:19But it should be.
03:19So it's more of a must look good than it is a must win.
03:23If Drake May looks good, you're going to be having far more margin of error
03:26than one fumble costing you the game.
03:29Maybe.
03:29I watched the Steelers against the Falcons.
03:31That was part of my quad box, Greg.
03:33And let me just tell you, the Falcons are probably the worst team in the NFL.
03:40I don't know, there's the Browns.
03:41They exist.
03:42Yeah, the Browns.
03:43That's true.
03:43Deshaun, I think he's turning it around this Sunday.
03:45We might hear from him if they said it today, too.
03:47Oh, yeah.
03:48If you ever feel bad about yourself, you could just say,
03:50at least we're not in Cleveland for many reasons.
03:53But the Steelers needed a T.J. Watt heroic pick six
04:00and some fortuitous bounces to beat the Falcons at home.
04:04If the Steelers are here and it's a one-possession game
04:07and Ramondre costs you the game, then you're not as good as you think you are.
04:10Yeah, you should be able to win this game.
04:12You should be able to win this football game if you're the Patriots.
04:16You know, Curtis is right.
04:18The Steelers, you know, fought toot and nail to beat Atlanta, who was starting Cooper Rush.
04:24So you should be able to win this football game.
04:27But the importance of winning this football game, because then even if you go one and three,
04:31I think we'll still be concerned.
04:32But we have where we can look at it and go, all right, it's not where they need to be.
04:39And we're disappointed, but you can, like, you know, you've got some games coming up
04:44that can get you right back into the mix.
04:46Here is a text from my home continent of Maine addressing you, Wiggy, which says,
04:53how can it be a fork in the road when it comes to Drake May?
04:56If he doesn't play well on Sunday, are they going to bench him?
05:01No, no, no.
05:02They're not going to bench him.
05:04But nobody's talking about that.
05:05I think then the questions are going to be like, all right, Drake May is good,
05:11but how good is he really, right?
05:14It's going to be like, oh, he's a good quarterback.
05:16He's somebody that, you know, when you look at quarterbacks in the National Football League,
05:21you go, okay, I'd rather have Drake May over that guy.
05:23But you've got to understand, we are putting Drake May, or at least I was,
05:28and I know Sean was, you're putting him in a position where he's going to be amongst
05:33the top five best quarterbacks in the NFL right now.
05:36So you can't have games where you're losing the teams you shouldn't be losing to.
05:42You're starting off 0-4.
05:44When is the last time you've seen a top five quarterback?
05:47Josh Allen lost to the Jaguars a couple years ago, and he didn't even score a point.
05:51I think they lost like 9-0.
05:52It was embarrassing.
05:53I was getting ready to say his team started 0-4.
05:55Also, everybody tells me how incredible Herbert is, and he's yet to win a playoff game.
06:00So Drake May's already won a playoff game.
06:02They also just lost to the Cardinals a week long.
06:05Good morning, Straw Men.
06:06Very nice to meet you both.
06:07So nobody's saying that Drake May is not as good as Justin Herbert.
06:11Wiggy, are you saying that?
06:12No.
06:12Okay, and the second point is Wiggy hadn't even finished his point.
06:15Right.
06:15He was about to talk about a team going 0-4.
06:18Obviously, every great quarterback that has ever lived has had awful games.
06:22Right.
06:22The people that send me like, Brady threw four interceptions against the Denver Broncos.
06:28Okay.
06:28Yeah, Brady's never looked like that in a Super Bowl.
06:30He's played in 10 of them.
06:31So if you want to really go back and go over the games and talk about them, I'd be happy
06:35to compare the resumes if you want to introduce other quarterbacks.
06:37The reality is if Drake May loses to the carcass of Aaron Rodgers on Sunday, then it's a really
06:44big five-alarm fire.
06:45The reason people bring that up is not to compare resumes.
06:48It's simply to show you that even the greatest quarterback in the history of football that
06:53will ever live has had bad games.
06:55But he's never thrown a pass in that spot with that on the line with the field goal
06:59where he gets you to overtime.
07:01Literally never in his life would he ever make that throw.
07:03Wasn't he the last quarterback to throw three interceptions in the fourth quarter, Tom Brady?
07:07No, no, no.
07:07Stop.
07:07Follow along.
07:08In that spot when you're at the 15-yard line.
07:11No, I follow along just fine.
07:11You don't have to like raise your voice and get all pissy at me.
07:13It's never happened.
07:15It's never happened.
07:15He threw three interceptions in the fourth quarter, correct?
07:17He could have thrown a hundred.
07:19That's not the point.
07:20I'm saying.
07:20It'll be an easy show for us.
07:21We can just lay back.
07:21But no, but it's very simple.
07:22Greg, follow along.
07:23So Curtis, we can follow along.
07:26Stop telling us to follow along.
07:28Just give us your point.
07:29That is a negative thing that you do.
07:31Like, holy smokes.
07:32You're talking to ourselves like we're five-year-olds.
07:34I'm Bud's woman.
07:35We're not James.
07:36I'm Bud's woman.
07:37So the reality here is that that throw was something that has never been done by a historically
07:44great quarterback.
07:45That was an absolute abomination.
07:49No good quarterback has ever thrown a pick to lose the game.
07:51Historically great.
07:52Not good.
07:53Way to change the adjective I used.
07:56So that is what is concerning to me.
07:58Not that he threw three interceptions in the fourth quarter.
08:00Tom Brady threw a horrific pick to Champ Bailey against the Broncos in the 2005 season that
08:06they should have won that game.
08:07They were in the red zone at the five-yard line.
08:08It should have been a touchback because Benjamin Watson ran down and tracked him down.
08:12Two Georgia guys, Wiggy.
08:12But I'm not saying that Brady didn't throw back-breaking interceptions.
08:16He certainly did.
08:18The situation that you were in on Wednesday night, I have never seen a truly great quarterback
08:25make that decision in that spot.
08:26We might need a poll from the situation with regard to whether this is a must-win or not.
08:32And whether it's a fork in the road.
08:33Can that be the same poll?
08:35Or does that have to be separate polls?
08:37Like one poll is a fork in the road poll and the other is a must-win.
08:42Or maybe you just combine them.
08:43I think you probably can combine them.
08:44And the thing that I'm saying, Greg, is I'm not saying that Drake may still isn't going
08:50to be a good quarterback.
08:52But you brought up Justin Herbert.
08:54But I would think most people, well, I'll say this.
08:58I would, in my opinion, I think a lot of people look at Justin Herbert as not a top five
09:05guy.
09:05Not his coach.
09:07His coach said last week he's going to be, eventually, he's going to be better than Tom Brady.
09:13He also said J.J. McCarthy could be the greatest quarterback in the NFL and then didn't draft him.
09:19He's going to be said he's going to be the GOAT.
09:21He's eventually going to be the GOAT.
09:22No, yeah.
09:23But when I look at...
09:24Well, he's a GOAT in terms of spouses.
09:26He did pretty well there.
09:28When I looked at Drake May, I was putting Drake May as being a top five guy.
09:33Justin Herbert is a good quarterback.
09:35But I don't think anybody would ever argue he's a top five guy.
09:38So that's why I need to see Drake May's performance get better.
09:41Or he's going to be thrown into that category.
09:43Okay.
09:44Just wanted to share a quick stat for you and a bit of opinion on the Patriots defense.
09:50Ian Harditz had this yesterday.
09:52The lowest completion percentage allowed.
09:55So this is a cornerback stat, if you weren't aware.
09:57The lowest completion percentage allowed since week one of last season.
10:02Number one on the list.
10:04Our guy, Christian Gonzalez.
10:07Allows only 44.4% of passes thrown his way.
10:11When he is in coverage.
10:13And this is the exact reason why I think we were a little frustrated with him not being
10:17on JSN quite as much as we had hoped in week one.
10:20I expect him to be locked in on DK Metcalf here in week two.
10:23Like DK Metcalf should be almost irrelevant in this game.
10:27I know Curtis talked about how awful like the Steelers offense looked a lot of times.
10:31DK Metcalf did drop a couple passes.
10:33I think like there was one that was probably should have been a pass interference.
10:36But like DK Metcalf probably dropped a pass he should have caught.
10:38And so I just I want to just take him completely out of the game because there's one athletic
10:43freak on that Pittsburgh offense and it's DK Metcalf.
10:47So if you just remove him from the game, I feel very, very comfortable about being able
10:50to limit that offense entirely.
10:52So Christian Gonzalez, that's why you paid him the big bucks because he doesn't allow
10:56completions.
10:57He is like it's less than a coin flip chance that that ball is getting completed when throwing
11:01in his direction.
11:02He's one of the best corners in football.
11:04Stick him on DK Metcalf as much as possible on Sunday.
11:07And hopefully that'll just eliminate DK Metcalf.
11:09Where do you currently have the Patriots defense ranked overall?
11:13I know Wiggy has them very high.
11:14I don't know.
11:15On your own personal list.
11:16I need to see more from the run defense like Jadarian Price was gashing them in that first
11:22game in week one.
11:24I would say probably somewhere in like that 10 to 12 range at the moment.
11:28Like I don't think they're a top five defense.
11:30They didn't look like Seattle.
11:31But yeah, I would agree.
11:32I would agree.
11:33Your run defense has to be better.
11:35I think your your passing defense is really good.
11:37And granted, I think, you know, a lot of the question from the first game is, you know,
11:42Sam Donald got hurt.
11:43And, you know, how much can you really evaluate that?
11:47I think it's going to be the same thing.
11:49If your defense plays well, it's going to be well.
11:50Aaron Rodgers is old.
11:51Your real test will come Jacksonville and Buffalo and how you do.
11:55But I agree with Sean.
11:57It's all about your run defense right now.
11:59I think your pass defense is pretty good.
12:00And please, for the love of God, don't be giving up 22 yards on an obvious passing situation
12:04in third and 23.
12:05That's all.
