Even after the loss... is there some good news for the Patriots?? In case NE isn't the #1 seed, which teams are the Patriots most likely to face in the 1st round of playoffs? What about round 2?
Don't panic! The AFC is wide open! However... Wiggy has one playoff concern. Are the Patriots built for a deep run? What team do you fear the most?
Transcript
00:00Hey Greg, good morning. I'm not trying to suck up to boss man Laird, but he sent a good email
00:05yesterday with the percentages or percent chance of where each AFC team could land seeding wise
00:12in the playoffs. I thought it was a little kind of a douche move speaking just honestly that he
00:16sent us the percentage chances that Wiggy will actually have one meal a day. Definitely kind
00:21of a douche move in that regards. But I did think that, you know, Sunday's loss was upsetting to a
00:28lot of people and it's time to try and look on the bright side for a moment. And so I thought
00:33with these, it kind of shows that there's an opportunity for the New England Patriots
00:38to draw teams like Jacksonville and the Chargers in the first two rounds of the playoffs as the
00:45two seed, which I think is almost like best case scenario outside of getting the Steelers who I
00:50don't think are very good. And you're just not going to be able to get them because they're the
00:53four seed and you'd be the two seed. You could easily draw as the seven seed, the Chargers,
00:58because they are second in percentage odds to finish the seven seed at 31% chance. And then
01:04you could easily get the Jaguars in the second round if they were to upset the Texans in the
01:11playoffs. And so I think there's a really, really strong chance that you could draw the Chargers
01:16round one, the Jaguars round two. You think there's a strong chance that the Jaguars are
01:23upsetting the Texans? Yeah, absolutely. Especially if the Jaguars are at home. I think the Jaguars
01:28have been really good. I think their defense is really underrated. I think you pointed out that
01:33Trevor Lawrence has been good this year. I don't think he's been good this year, but I think he's
01:37been very good of late. I think, especially, I mean, last week he had what, six touchdowns in that
01:42game against the Jets. Granted it was the Jets. So take that as you will. But like, I think the
01:46Jaguars are a good football team and could beat the Texans. And so then you get to welcome the
01:51Jaguars into Gillette after beating the Chargers. And there's a chance then that you have, you will
01:56allow the, uh, the bills to go to Denver first to play the Broncos. And you, they could either
02:01knock the Broncos off and you welcome in the bills for a rubber match, or you then go to Denver in the
02:06AFC championship game, which might suck. But at the same time, like there's no better first two games
02:13of the playoffs. You could ask for then Chargers Jaguars, in my opinion.
02:16Okay, shine. Thank you very much. You're very welcome. Kind of interesting. What?
02:20No, I said it was kind of interesting that it plays out like that. Cause Ken would,
02:24Ken would, what, how would he be having? So he would have the Colts in?
02:27Yeah. So he said this, so this is from ESPN.
02:29Oh, ESPN. Yeah. So it would be, he was, uh, had more clarity with the one meal thing.
02:35Yeah. When is that? Oh, no, I'm just wondering how he, he likes to give Ken credit where credit
02:40is due. And I appreciate that. You know, Ken, uh, put the, uh, analytics together on this.
02:46Right. Cause right, cause right now the Colts are out. So which team does he, which team does
02:53ESPN have out that they have the Colts out? Well, what other team do you think would be out?
02:59Oh, cause it would go like Broncos Patriots. I know, but Texans that I might've, I might've
03:04misheard. You said you could draw Jacksonville and the Colts is what Jacksonville and the
03:08Chargers. Okay. All right. Sorry. Killing me here. All good. All right. I thought you said
03:11Chargers have like their fifth string offensive lineman in Ken has the chiefs with a slight chance
03:16for the number one seat. All right. I mean, you laugh shine, but that was basically things
03:21Ken said the first two years. Greg was on EEI. He's like a meteor is going to destroy Fenway
03:27Park on Friday. He was full of a lot of hot takes back in the old days. And the do-rag,
03:34which is so off-putting. It really was. I don't know. I kind of like the bandanas. Bit
03:38of a hot take artist, Ken Laird on the, uh, on the show. He was the Jackson Pollock of takes.
03:43Yeah. All right. Uh, thank you very much, Sean. You're welcome. Curtis. Good morning.
03:48Good morning. Uh, I thought of Jackson this morning, even though he's not working with us
03:52directly anymore. I said, I think he could make better than 13 of 25 free throws than Jalen Brown
03:57did last night, but, uh, Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes is the story of my life. And, uh, I just
04:03would like to introduce a quick stat at the age of 45. We all believe Tom's final year was awful,
04:11right? He didn't play well. The bucks were kind of cooked. He was getting divorced. It was a dumpster
04:15fire. He had 25 touchdowns, nine interceptions, and a passer rating of 90.7. Patrick Mahomes finished
04:24this season with a passer rating of 89.7 at the age of 45 in a season where they won the division going
04:35under 500 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tom Brady had a better year than Patrick Mahomes year 30 season
04:43with one of the great offensive minds in NFL history and everything else with, you know, Taylor,
04:50Taylor, Travis Kelsey, Taylor's husband, all of that. And I find the conversation nationally where
04:56they're comparing the 08 ACL tear to this ACL tear from a homes that was the year the Patriots missed
05:02the playoffs. It's just, it's just, I would say, uh, it's not being completely truthful or it's not a
05:09great comparison because one was week one. The other was week 15 and in week, does anybody believe
05:17that the Patriots in 2008 would have been six and eight up until the point before Pat, before Tom
05:24Brady would blow his ACL out? No. So it's just, it's not even like it's apples and oranges. I don't
05:30understand even in defeat why they are so dead set on making the homes look like something he's not.
05:36Well, and this is not something, the last point, this is not something you're going to see anywhere
05:39nationally. The last three seasons, 28, 29, and 30, the heart of your prime. Mahomes has passed the
05:47ratings 92.6, 93.5, and 89.6 this past season. Those are Mac-esque. And I don't know what's going
05:56on. I hope he gets well quick. The game is better with him in it, but the pursuit and the greatest and
06:01all that is just so laughable now in hindsight. Well, and speculation wise, I saw a doctor or
06:07somebody who suggested that it's more than likely he doesn't play the entire season next year.
06:16Do you? What? Oh yeah. No, he'll be back in August. I don't know. I mean, it's six to 12 months.
06:22Is that not you who showed me that yesterday or was that somebody else? No, it wasn't me. I mean,
06:26I thought if anything, he would be back midway through the season. I don't know when that is
06:31week four, week six, you know, look, look at Steph Diggs, for example, right? He tore his knee
06:39at the midway point. October, 2024. Yeah. So that was the midway point. He was back by the beginning
06:46of the season. I would think that Mahomes would probably be back week four, week five, you know,
06:51based on just the timeline, but who the hell knows now they were modern medicine.
06:56Now, Curtis, on another topic, Stephen A., I believe yesterday was calling for Tom Brady
07:02to take over the entire football operation of the Las Vegas Raiders. Where do you stand on that?
07:10I want him gone. I want him here. I don't think it's going to work well. We've always talked about
07:15Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky and these all-time greats that struggle in that capacity. If I were
07:20president of the United States and God hope one day I will, I would have Tom Brady be the
07:26emergency quarterback for any team that gets an injury and you can just go play for the Bills
07:30this week and then their quarterback gets out and you'll play for a different team.
07:34You don't want him running the football operation? No, I don't think that he's going to be good at
07:38that. He was awful. I mean, I love Tom, you know that, but he got Mohamed Sanu. Like, it's not like
07:45he brought in Antonio Brown. The guy can play, but not exactly there in the brain. Like, I don't know.
07:49I just, it's so difficult in the guys, whether it's Nick Casario or Light or Veach or who's the
07:58guy Sneed with the Rams. Like, they've been doing this their entire professional career.
08:03They've been evaluating players, whereas Tom has been playing. It's very different, I think.
08:08I think the thing with Mahomes and Brady is because their careers kind of in the beginning,
08:14like for whatever it is, the first nine years have looked very similar as far as where they are,
08:19how many Super Bowls they've won, and then the injuries take place. Because if you look at,
08:24kind of like Curtis said, if you look at Mahomes and Brady, their 28, 29, you know, and 30-year-old
08:31point was very similar in what you kind of see them as quarterbacks. Their QB ratings were almost
08:38identical. Touchdowns to interceptions were identical. And then you get Mahomes, who then
08:47blows his knee out, and Brady blew his knee out at that age. It's like, here are these two guys,
08:53or here's the one guy that, you know, people said, could he catch Brady kind of having the same thing.
08:58And, you know, and that's why I think you see a lot of the, like, comparisons of Tom.
09:03The difference, I'll say, is that Brady never had a losing record or never had a team out of the
09:11playoffs when he was healthy, like Mahomes did right before he got hurt. That's the difference.
09:17But statistically, I mean, they're pretty much almost identical.
09:21Aren't these all things Curtis just said in his lead moments ago?
09:24No, I'm telling you why they compare the two.
09:27Oh, okay.
09:28I'm saying why.
09:29Well, yeah, I mean, well, they compare the two because they are considered to be two of the best
09:34to ever do it.
09:35Right, so that's why I'm saying he, Curtis doesn't understand.
09:37And they compare the two because they were dynasty forward out there.
09:40Right.
09:40Yeah, but Curtis is like, he doesn't understand why, and I'm trying to give the side of why
09:45I think they compare the two.
09:46Well, he's just saying that now, hindsight, it's, I don't want to speak for Curtis.
09:51Please.
09:51But hindsight, it is ridiculous to suggest that there will ever be a dynasty that equals
09:57the New England Patriots.
09:58It's impossible.
09:59Right, and the point is simple that there was a pursuit with almost all great athletes
10:04of my life that there is a desire to point out the flaws because it's interesting because
10:09people appear flawless.
10:11Yet with Mahomes, people don't talk about it.
10:14Like, Brady was playing okay one season off of a suspension, and Max Kellerman said he was
10:20going to fall off a cliff when literally Mahomes' last three seasons have been far worse than
10:25any season Brady had in his 40s.
10:27Amen, brother.
10:28And nobody talks about him falling off a cliff.
10:30It's just, I don't know, interesting.
10:32All right, good morning.
10:33All right, good morning.
10:33So, Greg, you started off the show asking where our expectations were, and I'll say this
10:39for the New England Patriots, am I disappointed that they lost to the Buffalo Bills?
10:42Yes, because I wanted the number one seed, and I still want the number one seed, and I'm
10:47still, you know, praying and hoping that the Denver Broncos stubbed their toe, but I will
10:52say this.
10:53Sean Ted, here's the lead.
10:55You couldn't ask for a better situation if you were the New England Patriots, even if
10:59you end up at the number two seed.
11:01This year, the road is wide open.
11:03You know, we talk about teams that maybe concern you a little bit, and I've talked about the
11:07Texans, but I still believe you beat the Texans.
11:09There's only one team that concerns me if you had to play them that I would be nervous
11:16about losing to them, and that is the Buffalo Bills, and the only reason why is because
11:21of Josh Allen.
11:22When you look at the rest of the AFC, there's not a team on there that scares me to the point
11:27where I would be worried or concerned, like, even if you didn't have your best game, that
11:32you should not be able to beat this team.
11:34I think even if you have to go to Denver, I still think you're good enough to beat Denver
11:38in Denver, and that would be the AFC Championship game, and if you lost that game, yeah, I'd
11:42probably be upset and disappointed, but I'd be like, wow, Vrabel's first year, you get
11:48to the AFC Championship game, pretty spectacular feat, but if you're Vrabel and you're the Patriots
11:54and we're sitting there as Pats fans, you couldn't have asked for a better situation, whether
12:00it's Jacksonville, Pittsburgh, the Chargers, and some of those teams, Shimes brought up,
12:05the Texans, the only team that concerns me to that level is the Bills, and the only reason
12:11why is Josh Allen, and I think if you do what you're supposed to do, you should be able to
12:17beat the Bills.
12:18I think some ask, or some were asking yesterday, because you were saying a similar thing, how
12:24you watch that game on Sunday, and the way in which they went about the second half, and
12:31don't have any kind of concern whatsoever about the football team.
12:36I just think...
12:37How I don't have a concern?
12:39Yes.
12:39Because I don't think...
12:40They think it's a little bit Homer-ish.
12:41I don't think you make the same mistake.
12:43You're to be excused for that, because you played for the New England Patriots, so I understand
12:48that.
12:48Because I don't think Vrabel makes the same mistake again in the playoffs if he's up 24
12:55to 7.
12:56If he's up 24 to 7, I don't think he makes the same mistake of being a little bit more...
13:01So you put that on him.
13:03I put it on him and the coaching staff, and obviously guys not making plays, but I think
13:08you've got to be aggressive.
13:09I mean, they did things in that game that they haven't done in a while.
13:13They missed...
13:14I think they had like 10 missed tackles in that football game on Sunday.
13:18Yeah.
13:18That's somewhat concerning.
13:20Right.
13:20Harold Landry can't run...
13:22And I said this, and I...
13:25One of your keys to the game.
13:26Yes.
13:26You cannot run past Josh Allen out of control.
13:32He ran past them out of control.
13:35Josh Allen scored the touchdown, but you did get the holding call.
13:38Well, Brees Hill was very upset that Landry went inside.
13:41On that pass rush.
13:42On that...
13:43Very upset by that.
13:44Then Landry, maybe a couple plays later, takes an inside rush, which allows Josh Allen to
13:50get outside the pocket.
13:52Great contain.
13:53Yep.
13:53And once he's outside the pocket, that puts a strain on your second level players.
13:59Because now your linebacker, or whoever that underneath coverage is, he has to make a decision.
14:05Do I come up and try to make a play on Josh Allen, or do I let Josh Allen just walk in
14:09the end zone because I got to cover my man?
14:11And those were two plays.
14:13And I said this, and they did it at the beginning of the game.
14:15I said, any opportunity, third and seven or longer, or second and ten, you heat up Josh Allen
14:23on the control where you put a guy in his lap where he can't throw the football, but you
14:29don't give him the opportunity to run.
14:30And they did that early in the game, and they were able to sack him.
14:33617 text on the Subaru of New England text line.
14:37You are an absolute idiot, Wiggy.
14:41The Ravens are going to destroy the Patriots this week.
14:44And then you're going to be the fourth seed.
14:47Oh, okay.
14:47Well, if that person feels like the Ravens are going to destroy the Patriots, I said, you
14:53got to bring your A game because the Ravens are in desperation mode.
14:57And a guy like Lamar Jackson, not as he a Josh Allen level because of the injury, but
15:03he has the Josh Allen capability where if you don't rush him under control, or you let
15:08him do some things back there, he's going to be able to make plays.
15:12Yeah.
15:13But my expectations are this road is wide open for you to get to a Super Bowl and win
15:19a Super Bowl.
15:20The team that I would be concerned with is obviously Josh Allen.
15:24But if you do what you're supposed to do, which you were doing in the first half, which
15:29you did the first time you played them, and that's why I don't think Vrabel makes that
15:33mistake again.
15:33You need to get Milton Williams back.
15:35When is he going to be back?
15:36I mean, he'll be back for the playoffs, I would imagine.
15:39I think he's eligible technically to return after the Ravens game.
15:42I believe the Ravens game will be game four.
15:44So after that game, he would be eligible to come off IR if he's ready.
15:47All right.
15:48Okay.
