00:36reacted to this how the fans have reacted to the whole pete alonzo comeback and there is a lot to
00:41digest and i think there's a way to talk about this with some nuance here now pete alonzo's 300th home
00:49run came in the ninth inning of a game the mets ended up losing seven to five to the orioles

01:01they've seen pete alonzo hit some late games home runs none probably more memorable than in 2024

01:31the field and we talked about the love that we saw from mets fans to pete alonzo on monday night

01:38it pre-game we saw it during the tribute video we saw it during his first at bat you saw
01:43fans wanting
01:44him to hit this home run right they they wanted to see that wardy actually went out here and predicted
01:49that he hit two home runs in the series well he's got one and there is a segment of the
01:55mets fan base
01:55that wants to see pete alonzo hit home runs against his former team and they want to celebrate him and
02:01all that and i get that but let's also consider the situation of what happened on tuesday night again
02:08it's the ninth innings game the mets are trying to win i understand they already eliminated
02:13from playoff contention not much to play for this has been an underwhelming season for the
02:18metropolitans in flushing however when you show up as a fan you're still trying to see your team win
02:25at least that's what i i hope that's what i thought i understand you want to celebrate a homegrown guy
02:31who is the franchise's all-time home run leaders and some people have feelings about whether he should
02:36have still been here with the mets allowed to let go how you feel about david stearns and i'll get
02:41to
02:41that in a second because i think more of this has to do with david stearns i get all that
02:46but
02:47you're still a mets fan they're rooting for your team to win my opinion you can't be cheering for the
02:55ops to hit a home run that ties the game in the ninth inning time and situation matters here for

03:04if this was in the sixth inning and the home run tied the game or took the lead or whatever

03:09first inning fine you want to cheer you want to give him a standing ovation you want to give him

03:21that the guys on the team that you're supposedly cheering for are busting their ass trying to win
03:28and you're out there cheering for the ops nah i get it you wanted to cheer pete alonzo you want

03:41for that and that was monday night but that passed and now it's over even if you still wanted to

04:15been frustrated with this franchise we've seen good players come and go i don't have to tell the
04:20much older mets fans older than me talk to them about june 15th 1977 they know about tom siever
04:29getting traded at a time when he was a three-time cy young award winner and how much that hurt

04:37mets fan base this is a guy three-time cy young award winner who led them to a world series

04:41in 1969 mets fans have felt the pain i don't have to tell you about that i understand that
04:48that's fine and you do have pain from this year and i get all that however at some point
04:55you have to comport yourself as a fan base in a franchise that isn't just out here looking for
05:04something anything to hold on to and cheer for but understanding that there's a time and place
05:11and when somebody's the opposition when they're the ops you can't be out there cheering for them
05:17when they hit a game-tying home run there's got to be a code there has to be a line
05:21and where is the
05:23code and it has bothered some of the players francisco lindor said on monday because there were some
05:30mets fans cheering against jonathan wanting him to give up the home run which was weird to me as well

05:37and he said they should have been more cheers and more support for jonathan shaw mania who pitched
05:43on tuesday and let's give him credit because we always talk about athletes and wanting athletes
05:50to be honest with what they say to the media and how they feel where shaw mania was honest here
05:55he was asked by steve gelbs of sny he was asked how he felt about the reaction
06:05that the mets fans gave peter alonso to that 300th home run it was a game-tying homer in the
06:11ninth
06:11inning he said it was kind of crazy shaw mania is right he's right like think about it for a
06:20second
06:20for the guys that have the mets jersey on that are out there busting their behinds still trying to win
06:27games the mets team who's played better since the all-star bank better since the trade deadline you've
06:32seen the passion you've seen the enthusiasm hasn't always led to wins but think about how those guys
06:37feel where they feed off the energy we talk about this all the time in sports they feed off the
06:42energy
06:42of the fans that come out to support them and i'm not saying that there's every way to tell fans
06:49how to cheer not to cheer because fans pay their hard-earned money for the tickets
06:53and i understand all that i get it you show up you pay your money you pay for parking the
06:59ticket prices
07:00all that and you want to cheer however you want to cheer but there's got to be a standard among

07:05mets fans who are always talking this talk around the mets we talk about it on straight out of
07:10flushing there's talk about changing the culture well starts with the fans too starts with the front
07:16office but the fans too and the energy they provide salute peter alonso please do that shower him with
07:24all the respect and later this week mets fans will also salute carlos beltran who deserves to be
07:29showered with all the respect as his number gets retired on saturday at city field but there's
07:35got to be a standard here i also understand and this is why it's important to talk about this with
07:40nuance and not make this a hot take i understand that some of the mets fans and you saw this
07:45happen
07:45over the last two games part of their cheering for peter alonso and putting all this out there
07:52is their ire with the president of baseball operations david stearns because following that you
07:58heard some fire sterns chants and you heard it at different times sprinkled throughout these two
08:03games against the orioles the last couple of days at city field and listen you want to go there you
08:09want to chant fire sterns i get it and cheer peter alonso maybe you feel like that's your way of
08:15sticking it to sterns i say okay i say okay that's fine but i've been saying this for a while
08:24that's fans if you're really frustrated if you really don't like the product on the field if
08:29you really don't like what happened this year if you really wanted to stick it to ownership or the
08:36front office or whatever it may be the way you do that is by not showing up when you're showing

08:43you're still spending money for the tickets spending money in the arena in the field city field excuse me
08:51that is still a situation where your dollars are not really backing what your mouth is saying here
09:00okay and i get you want to stick it to david stearns it's been a rough year some feel that
09:07alonso should
09:07still be here and then he has had a solid season he's now hit his 300th home run in a
09:15special moment for
09:16him and i also do want to credit pete alonso because pete alonso met with the fans who caught
09:23the 300th home run ball three of them after the game and he signed their jerseys and told them hey
09:28anytime they want to come down to camden yards to watch him play he's going to hook them up the

09:33nine all that great job by pete alonso on that and obviously it was really dope for him to come

09:39to city field and hit his 300th home run so there's a lot around this so the franchise all-time
09:47leader in home runs should be honored as such mets fans though you're doing a little bit too much
09:54with cheering him in the ninth inning of a game he tied are you trying to win or not at

11:02to somebody who had a game-tying home run again i don't think he's wrong i understand why he felt
11:07that way i understand why he said and i applaud him for saying it because he's right are you with

11:15are you against us there's a time to show love and there's a time to get back to rooting for

11:21and hopefully now with these two games behind us the mets fans can get back to rooting for their team
