00:00The funny thing about the worst day of your life is, it's incredibly rare that you'll wake up knowing it's

00:06about to happen.

00:08That would be a thought that Becky Evans would have exactly 12 hours after waking up on a sunny April

00:13morning in her safe suburban street.

00:15The gentle cooing of her baby, little Cora, drifting from the crib next to the bed.

00:20Her husband, Derek, had already left a few hours before she woke up.

00:24Sales waits for no man, he would often say before giving her a gentle kiss on the forehead and letting

00:29her drift back off.

00:31The last few months had been a challenge, adjusting to fitting baby Cora into their lives after a rough pregnancy

00:37and a difficult birth.

00:38The late nights, the health check-ins, endless paperwork, additional expenses.

00:44Most days she felt like tearing her hair out, but she learned to relish these small moments of peace,

00:50watching the golden morning sun slant in through the window blinds.

00:53The forecast was warm with a breeze.

00:56The perfect day to take Cora out for a walk in the stroller,

00:59and she'd been meaning to try out the new part that had just finished renovations not far from her place.

01:04It was a beautiful day, exactly as the forecast had predicted.

01:08Cora babbled inside the stroller, and Becky spoke back, playfully asking,

01:12Yeah, and then what happened?

01:14Oh, that's interesting.

01:15The counselors at the parenting classes had said that it was important to speak to the baby in real words.

01:20They'd acquire language slower if you spoke nonsense back to the babies,

01:25so she would always be carrying on one-sided conversations with Cora.

01:29Sometimes she felt like Cora was the only one that she could really be honest with.

01:33Honesty was a rare and beautiful thing these days.

01:36The serenity of the perfect blue sky, dotted with pillowy Pixar clouds and the perfectly manicured grass on every side,

01:43was interrupted when Becky stepped straight into the middle of a fat, stinking dog turd

01:49that some careless owner had parked right there on the sidewalk.

01:52She heard the squelch and felt the soul drop out of her body.

01:54God damn it, she said, and it was such a perfect day.

02:00She kicked the brakes on the stroller and stepped off onto the grass,

02:03rubbing the sole of her sneaker against the blades and hoping to get off all the filth out of the

02:07grooves.

02:08And she'd just bought the sneakers last week.

02:11After a moment of frantic scraping, she sighed, resigned that this was as clean as she'd be able to get

02:16them,

02:16and headed back to the path where the stroller was waiting.

02:19The empty stroller.

02:22Becky's breath immediately caught in her throat.

02:23She moved faster than she'd ever moved in her life,

02:26not believing she was actually seeing what she was seeing.

02:29It had to be some trick, some optical illusion.

02:33She screamed her infant daughter's name and turned the stroller upside down looking for her,

02:37but there was nothing.

02:38The stroller truly was completely empty.

02:41She spun in all directions, but the park,

02:43which she once would have described with the words serene and spacious,

02:47now seemed desolate and empty.

02:50There wasn't a person as far as she could see.

02:52If anyone had snatched Cora,

02:55they'd managed to get completely out of sight before she'd even turned around from wiping her shoe.

03:00It was impossible.

03:01It was a nightmare.

03:03And yet it was real and happening right now.

03:08What happened between then and the police getting involved was a blur.

03:12She must have called, but she couldn't, for the life of her, remember making the call.

03:16She was sitting in her own living room, shell-shocked, surrounded by police, taking notes and statements and making calls.

03:23Her husband would be there soon.

03:24An all-points bulletin was already put out on baby Cora.

03:27A young girl with golden hair in a cornflower blue onesie.

03:31Amber alerts lit up phones across the country.

03:48Jarring tonal shift aside, back to the story.

03:51It wasn't long before the investigation hit the news and the whole country became aware of what was going on,

03:56and search parties were formed.

03:59Photos of Cora were blasted all over social media, being seen by millions in mere hours.

04:04They attracted genuine concern and crackpot conspiracy theories about organized wings of baby snatchers that had the ability to teleport.

04:12While most people thought this was more internet conspiracy nonsense,

04:15since there was one group who figured this theory was at least worth another look.

04:19The SCP Foundation.

04:22Thankfully, they didn't need to mobilize a full task force,

04:24because a Foundation agent was already embedded in Becky's local precinct.

04:28He was one of the first ones on the scene at the park when baby Cora first went missing.

04:33He was able to discreetly use Foundation diagnostic tools to tell whether anything anomalous had happened here.

04:38The second that the exact spot where Becky's stroller was dinged on the machine as having an unusual hue level,

04:44he knew that this was a crime that the police would never be able to solve.

04:49The SCP Foundation would need to step in,

04:51and they'd have to move fast if they wanted to ensure that they got the baby back alive and safe.

04:57It was all hands on deck from day one.

05:00They, of course, began by exploring the usual suspects.

05:03Receiving intel from undercover agents embedded in deep cover within local Sarkic organizations,

05:08and even a few Scarlet King cults.

05:11Nothing.

05:12They also carefully monitored movements in the anomalous shadow economy,

05:16making sure that new human babies entered the market to be sold as vessels for unknowable,

05:21discarnated beings, or as an ingredient for certain anomalous dishes.

05:26Again, there was nothing.

05:28They employed multiple authentic Foundation psychics,

05:30unlike the phony ones you see ripping people off on TV,

05:34to search the psychosphere for any human memory traces of baby Cora's kidnapping.

05:38They couldn't find anything, which led them to believing that this wasn't a human

05:43who was responsible for the kidnapping in the first place.

05:46Researchers on the case didn't know whether to be comforted or terrified about this development.

05:51Helicopters were sent across the country with Hume scanners,

05:54as well as devices designed to detect baby Cora's psychic brainwaves.

05:58The truth they would soon find was so much stranger than any theory they could have strung together.

06:04Deep in the bayou of Louisiana, miles from where anyone looking for baby Cora was searching,

06:10there stood an old, rotten house, bent into a slant by age and its own weight.

06:15If you saw it from a distance, you'd write it off as abandoned,

06:19filled with nothing but spiders and dirty used needles.

06:22The kind of place you wouldn't even set foot inside if you weren't wearing a hazmat suit and an asbestos

06:27mask.

06:28It was a place where no human had set foot in decades.

06:32But that didn't mean there wasn't something waiting there.

06:35About a month ago, when baby Cora first went missing,

06:38a figure out of a nightmare was lumbering through the halls.

06:42Almost eight feet tall, with a frame that filled every doorway,

06:46it slumped through, most of its body encased in a cocoon of stinking black hail

06:51that clung so tight to its skin you couldn't see color underneath.

06:55As it walked with heavy steps across the creaking, moldy floorboards,

07:00it steadied itself with its hands against the walls.

07:02Its four thick fingers crinkled on the ancient peeling wallpaper.

07:07Its skin was blue as midnight,

07:10dirty and filth coagulated under its jagged fingernails.

07:13Its three shining eyes glowed in the dark from the frightening shape of its reptilian head,

07:18letting out low, pained moans that sounded like choked human sobs.

07:22Suddenly, the figure began to shake.

07:25It was a familiar feeling, like phlegm balling up in its throat.

07:29It needed to get to the kitchen before she started choking.

07:32And it did.

07:33It always did.

07:34The creature began to wheeze and heave as a lump in its throat expanded,

07:38a squelching sound growing deep in its gullet.

07:42Something was moving in there, forcing itself up and out.

07:46With a horrid, guttural growl, the creature began to unhinge its jaw.

07:51It had experienced this and knew now to lay down a pile of dirty old towels on the table to

07:56cushion its fall.

07:57After nasty noises that sounded like wet, hacking coughs,

08:00the monster vomited a wet, confused baby Cora out onto the towel nest on the table,

08:07where she had a soft landing.

08:09She didn't cry.

08:10That was the strangest part.

08:12She didn't seem to notice anything unusual about this situation,

08:15and neither did the creature.

08:17It reached down with such shocking tenderness for a beast of its size,

08:21and stroked baby Cora's chin, cooing gently.

08:25Cora babbled, not at all frightened by the monster that had just puked her out onto the table.

08:30It had scavenged milk too, baby formula, and done its best to keep it all clean.

08:35It would be able to keep the girl clean and fed and taken care of for a whole year.

08:39And when that year was up, well, it didn't like to think about what always happened then.

08:45Suffice to say, if the Foundation didn't find baby Cora in that time,

08:49there wouldn't be anything to find.

08:52The investigation continued to drag on for months.

08:55It was hell on Becky and her husband, Derek.

08:57They never lost hope, but holding out that hope has hours turned into days,

09:02and days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months,

09:05felt like being slowly dragged across a giant straight razor.

09:09Everyone around them assured them that they'd find their little girl,

09:13but they'd been exposed to enough true crime to know that every passing minute lessened their chances.

09:18The police weren't turning up any leads, as expected,

09:22but the Foundation were drawing every closer by the day.

09:26It was five months after the disappearance of baby Cora that the Foundation investigators were able to narrow the location

09:32down to a quadrant Louisiana swapland,

09:35which had an unusual Hume level, one that exactly matched the location where baby Cora had first gone missing.

09:43A mobile task force with minimal armaments was set in.

09:46Given that the baby was still hopefully alive on site,

09:49they thought wisely that the risk of going in all guns blazing and getting the infant caught in the crossfire

09:55would be the greatest disaster of all.

09:56They still had no idea of what they'd encounter inside.

10:01The operators entered the broken down building with perfect stealth.

10:05It was a mystery as to whether they'd encounter a terrifying monster,

10:08or the teleporting baby-stealing cult that all the online conspiracy theories were relentlessly posting about.

10:14And the former was closer, but that didn't encompass the whole picture.

10:18They encountered the huge, hairy beast in the kitchen,

10:22delicately changing baby Cora's diaper as though it was her very own mother,

10:26and made all of them freeze with genuine surprise.

10:29It was a delicate situation now, with the creature's behavior being so strange and unpredictable.

10:34But what they knew for certain was that they needed to get baby Cora out of the danger zone

10:39before any engagement between the operatives and the anomaly could take place.

10:44One agent went upstairs and created a loud noise as a diversion,

10:47sending the curious creature out of the room.

10:50Another, one of the smaller and faster agents,

10:52ran in and grabbed baby Cora before running out of the room.

10:55They were halfway down the hall when the anomaly smashed through the adjoining wall,

10:59howling in rage and sadness.

11:01While the agent carrying baby Cora was able to vacate the area,

11:04the others pulled out low-caliber sidearms and began to fire at the monster.

11:08This only seemed to make it meaner.

11:11It lunged forward, grabbing one agent in a bone-breaking grip

11:14and throwing him through the wall like it was made of rice paper.

11:17He broke most of the bones in his body.

11:20It simply shrugged off the gunshots and kept coming,

11:23tearing its way through the operatives to chase down the one carrying baby Cora,

11:27as though fueled by pure maternal instinct.

11:30Several agents died in the process of holding the anomaly back while baby Cora was rescued,

11:34and it took scores more to subdue the anomaly,

11:37who was believed to not only be large and hyper-durable,

11:40but easily 20 times as strong as your average adult male.

11:44Cora was returned to Becky and Derek, whose gratitude knew no bounds,

11:48and the Foundation began the true research into the nature of this anomaly,

11:53dubbed SCP-370-JP, the Wailing Baby Snatcher.

11:58The snatcher part was actually somewhat of a misnomer.

12:01The creature did not actively snatch.

12:04Instead, it simply experiences the bizarre phenomenon of human babies across the Earth

12:09randomly disappearing and teleporting into the creature's throat.

12:12It would then vomit up the babies and take care of them for up to 365 days.

12:17If the babies were retrieved from the anomaly before the allotted time runs out,

12:21it will experience the same state of rage, sadness, and aggression

12:24that you just saw with the initial extraction team.

12:27If all 365 days are permitted, the anomaly will instead eat the baby while weeping.

12:34The necessity to stop this happening has resulted in the creation of the Bogart Procedure.

12:39If leaving the baby will result in awful results for the baby,

12:42and taking the baby generally leads to awful outcomes for the Foundation staff,

12:47they needed a kind of cheat code.

12:49That discovery came from research that revealed before those 365 days are up,

12:54the anomaly will never do anything to harm the baby itself.

12:58Under the Bogart Procedure, the baby is retrieved safely,

13:01and is essentially used as a human shield to prevent the anomaly from attacking the Foundation staff.

13:07The creature is then simply allowed to treat its containment chamber like a rage room,

13:11wailing and destroying its furniture, but hurting nobody.

13:14All in all, it's the most effective procedure we've got.
