00:00It seemed too brilliant to fail.
00:02Ever since the SCP Foundation perfected its dimensional displacement technology
00:07and created a stable two-way path into the back rooms,
00:10they seemingly discovered an infinite number of uses for it.
00:14From extra storage space to a reserve energy source drawn from ambient interdimensional radiation.
00:20But could it provide a balm to one of the Foundation's greatest anxieties,
00:24creating a permanent and reliable containment chamber for SCP-096, the shy guy?
00:31Everything would need to be executed perfectly to avoid a total disaster.
00:35The portal technology was taken out to a desert thousands of miles away from the nearest population center.
00:41SCP-096's containment cube was carried over underneath the Chinook dual-rotor helicopter.
00:47In addition to all the researchers, containment specialists, and mobile task force operatives,
00:52one member of D-Class personnel, Gary, was also here to take one for the team.
00:58Gary was given a Polaroid picture in an envelope and told to open it,
01:02as the other personnel in attendance all retreated to a safe distance.
01:06The second he saw the horrid pale grimace on the Polaroid,
01:09he heard a pained, wailing echo from the dull confines of the giant metal cube.
01:13He didn't have long to ponder this awful keening before it was interrupted by the humming of machinery,
01:18as the researchers initialized the backroom's transport technology.
01:23It was an act of perfect timing.
01:25As soon as SCP-096 burst free from its cube with murderous intent,
01:30it and Gary were both enveloped by crackling blue tongues of energy from the machine.
01:35Both were no-clipped, not out of existence, just out of existence here.
01:40When both of them hit the ground, it was on the revolting beige carpets of the backrooms,
01:45where the yellow was bright and piercing, and the humbuzz of the fluorescent lights reigned supreme.
01:51What the hell is going on here?!
01:53was all Gary could scream as 096 appeared behind him and gave chase.
01:57The conventional wisdom with SCP-096 is that when you see its face, you're a dead man walking.
02:03No matter what happens next, when the anomaly's rage state is activated,
02:07it gains an inherent psychic awareness of its intended victim's position at all times.
02:12It would then travel in a relatively straight line, effortlessly smashing through any barrier in its way.
02:18But would being in a completely different dimension flip the script?
02:22Gary's concerns weren't nearly as high-minded.
02:25He just found himself frantically running through a honeycomb of nonsense hallways
02:29as the howling, shrieking monster chased him, often smashing through the straight walls to get to him faster.
02:35This was all like a nightmare he'd had after watching those Kane Pixels videos
02:39before he got the death penalty and became an SCP Foundation guinea pig.
02:44His muscles burned.
02:46His lungs disgorged the last of their air.
02:48He could feel the breeze of the monster's grasping claws on his back.
02:52And just when it seemed like it couldn't get any worse,
02:55he turned a corner and saw that this latest terrible hallway was a dead end.
02:59All of it had been for nothing.
03:02He froze.
03:03He knew it was over.
03:05He was expecting to feel teeth and claws around him at any moment.
03:09But instead, there was this insane flash of light,
03:12so sudden and intense that it seemed to shock both Gary and SCP-096,
03:17another portal inside the back rooms.
03:20Before SCP-096 could utterly annihilate its prey,
03:23a skein of thick, oily black tentacles emerged from the glowing portal
03:27and enveloped Gary, dragging him through.
03:30The light vanished in that same instant,
03:33leaving SCP-096 alone in that maddening yellow hallway.
03:38This was confusing for the beast.
03:40In fact, it was downright unprecedented.
03:43The target, Gary, was still here,
03:45somewhere in the back room's super-dimension,
03:47but no longer on this level.
03:49It was as though someone had thrown off its mental GPS.
03:53It could only make out the vague impression that Gary was out there somewhere
03:56and needed to be destroyed.
03:59But his exact location was a complete mystery.
04:02For once, the Shy Guy would actually need to search for its prey.
04:07SCP-096 was exposed to many strange and impossible sights
04:11while trapped inside the labyrinth of Level Zero.
04:14From a tesseract of refracted McDonald's playplaces
04:17to what appeared to be a giant, glowing YouTube subscribe button.
04:21Which reminds me,
04:22what are you doing watching this far into the video if you're not subscribed?
04:25Come on, hit the subscribe button and never miss another video from SCP Explained.
04:29You have no idea the secrets that are about to be exposed if you stick around.
04:33But back to SCP-096.
04:36The monster was still being guided by the foggy impression of Gary's presence
04:40across multiple layers of this fractured reality.
04:43It knew he was out there.
04:44It just needed to be a little more creative in finding him.
04:48But creativity had never been SCP-096's specialty,
04:52so it instead pushed all of its chips forward onto the next best thing,
04:56brute strength.
04:57The creature swept from confusion to rage again
05:00and began hammering its clenched fists against the squelching carpeted floor.
05:04Despite the creature's emaciated frame,
05:07its strength was tremendous.
05:09It wasn't long before the carpet had been torn away fully
05:12and the hardwood beneath began to splinter under the raw power of the Shy Guy's blows.
05:17When the floor fully collapsed and the Shy Guy fell through,
05:21it was to a different place entirely.
05:23Level One.
05:24This was at least a little more familiar to the Shy Guy,
05:27appearing in some ways like a Foundation containment site.
05:31Concrete warehouses, corridors, parking complexes,
05:35an industrial wasteland, a brutalist afterlife.
05:38It was also a lot like an SCP Foundation containment site,
05:42in the sense that the Shy Guy wasn't the only monster here,
05:45but it hadn't realized that quite yet.
05:47It began loping through the dark, echoing concrete vistas,
05:51feeling the psychic impression of Gary just that little bit clearer now.
05:55He wasn't here on this level, no, but it was a level closer at least.
06:00Progress.
06:01Not being the most intelligent of the creatures,
06:04it decided to use its other tactic first,
06:06smashing its fists into the ground again.
06:10Concrete cracked and splintered into clouds of grey dust,
06:13but this method didn't bear much fruit for 096.
06:16No matter how much concrete it smashed, there seemed to be more underneath.
06:21Every strike echoed through the annals of Level One,
06:23and unlike Level Zero,
06:25there were many things walking and crawling and slithering around in the dark to hear it.
06:30096 looked up when it heard a strange noise,
06:33the wet slapping of sweaty flesh against cold stone.
06:36There was an avalanche of beings rolling towards it,
06:40messes of twisted limbs, eyeless, faceless.
06:43These were the clumps,
06:45and because they could not see SCP-096 attacking on the basis of sound alone,
06:50they didn't activate the monster's rage state.
06:52Well, until they started attacking.
06:55There were dozens of them,
06:57but 096 had taken on hundreds of combatants at once before,
07:00and ones far deadlier than these.
07:02As the clumps tried to pile on,
07:05it grabbed them in its gnarled grip and tore them away,
07:07throwing them in all directions and splattering their feeble bodies against the nearby walls.
07:12It tore through so many of them before the rest began to relent,
07:16squealing and rolling away in retreat.
07:18But they weren't rolling away because of SCP-096.
07:22While the shy guy had been consumed with taking care of the clumps,
07:25the wall behind it shimmered like the surface of a lake.
07:28Three tall, twisting dullers stepped out of it.
07:31No clipping silently into the zone behind 096.
07:35If it was at all capable of compassion,
07:38it might have seen some kind of kinship with the dullers.
07:41Emaciated humanoids cursed to endlessly hunt human beings,
07:44and faceless, much like the dullers.
07:46But here in the back rooms,
07:48it was every monster for itself.
07:50The dullers attacked the shy guy all at once,
07:53wrestling it and tugging on its limbs,
07:55perhaps hoping to neutralize its tremendous strength.
07:58But that very same strength would be their undoing.
08:01The shy guys shrieked and reached back with its free arm,
08:04grabbing one of the dullers by its featureless head
08:07and flipping it over to the ground in front of it,
08:09smashing its body against the concrete.
08:12The other two disengaged and tried a noclip away through a nearby wall,
08:15hoping that it would save them from the shy guy's wrath.
08:18Sadly, in their primitive minds, ruled by instinct,
08:21they had no idea just how persistent their new enemy was.
08:26096 simply barged through the wall with them
08:28in a cascade of broken bricks and rebar.
08:30It grasped the dullers and tore them limb from limb with complete ease,
08:34but that wouldn't buy it any lasting peace.
08:37There were a number of long, grasping arms
08:39reaching down from a vent positioned above.
08:41Yes, this entity is literally just called arms.
08:44They lunged for the shy guy's back
08:46and raked their claws across its pale flesh,
08:49exposing its unbreakable bones underneath.
08:51And somehow, even worse was coming.
08:55All the commotion had attracted a growler,
08:58a huge, lumbering beast made out of multicolored pipe cleaners.
09:01Yes, we're serious, just deal with it.
09:04The creature let out an almighty roar and charged towards the shy guy,
09:07ramming its body and pushing it over a railing,
09:10tumbling down through the dark towards a wet, misty concrete platform.
09:14The growler hit the ground moments later,
09:16continuing its chase towards the day's shy guy.
09:19It was the largest and most dodged of the backroom's threats yet,
09:22but the shy guy had no intention of holding back.
09:25With one iron-strong claw,
09:27it reached into the nest of pipe cleaners and ripped out a handful,
09:31in what must have been the pipe cleaner equivalent of a Mortal Kombat fatality.
09:35With its rainbow heart ripped out,
09:37the growler collapsed onto the ground, dead.
09:40The shy guy was confused by this whole affair,
09:43but it really didn't care what strange backroom's entities
09:45decided to bum-rush it out here.
09:47It only needed to find and annihilate Gary to relieve this terrible anxiety of having been seen.
09:54Not even being in a completely different dimension relieved the pain of knowing
09:58someone was out there bearing a memory of its face.
10:01Being seen, being known.
10:03It was sickening, agonizing even.
10:06It would do anything to relieve that pain,
10:09even if it meant ripping all the way through this damn dimension to do it.
10:13It kept searching through this gray hellscape,
10:15letting the dull ache inside it.
10:17The impression of Gary's distant presence act as its north star.
10:21As it lumbered into a nearby hallway,
10:24layered with twisted, rusty pipes,
10:26it suddenly found itself enshrouded in darkness.
10:29Strange.
10:29It was as though all the lights in both directions suddenly switched off.
10:33But that didn't bother SCP-096 that much.
10:36It was following the psychic impression itself,
10:38not the lights.
10:40But then another light did illuminate at the far end of that cold, dark hallway.
10:45Eyes and teeth.
10:47The glowing countenance of a smiler.
10:49A hungry, cartoon-faced nightmare predator.
10:52Or at least, it would be for a human.
10:55As soon as the smiler's glowing eyes clapped onto the shy guy's face,
10:59the dynamic was flipped,
11:00and the hunter had immediately become the hunted.
11:03The shy guy wailed and screamed and scratched at its face.
11:07For a moment, the smiler might have assumed, like its human prey,
11:11the shy guy was doing all of this out of fear upon seeing such a frightening, impossible being.
11:16But that fantasy was immediately destroyed when SCP-096 came rushing at the smiler,
11:21its arms extended and claws grasping.
11:24For the first time in its existence,
11:26it was the smiler's turn to run.
11:29It tried to flee into the darkness,
11:31wafting like a living cloud of fear.
11:33But the shy guy didn't relent,
11:35lunging and chasing through the halls.
11:37Eventually, even the smiler ran out of energy,
11:39and the shy guy caught and tore to pieces its inky, insubstantial form.
11:44It was yet another creature to add to the count,
11:47but not a replacement for what it needed to do to Gary.
11:50What was this strange and ridiculous place?
11:53Finding a victim had never been this hard before.
11:56There were other creatures that it encountered
11:58while traversing the pipes and dingy storage sheds of Level 1,
12:01The entities that seemed the most similar to humans were the wretches,
12:05disgusting blackened zombies that shambled through the murk,
12:08looking for victims to attack and devour.
12:11In SCP-096, they would find no such victim.
12:14Their eyes activated the rage of the shy guy who shredded them one by one,
12:19wails and roars reverberating off the walls.
12:21To a human being in the back rooms,
12:23the skin-stealers were a terrifying threat,
12:25blobby humanoid beasts that ambush lone human prey
12:29and kill them in some terrible and unknowable way,
12:32before peeling off their skin and devouring what's inside.
12:35Then, they wear that skin as a suit and imitate the person they once were.
12:40Enough skin-stealers could infiltrate a group of survivors in the back rooms from within,
12:44and slowly destroy them all.
12:46But to the shy guy, the skin-stealer might as well just been another human,
12:50another pair of eyes to gaze upon it,
12:52another looker that might be destroyed for the crime of seeing its face.
12:57These creatures that made humans cower and flee tried in vain to run from it,
13:01from its wailing, grasping horror.
13:03It tore through the skin-stealers easily,
13:05leaving chunks of white goo and a trail of viscous clear fluid in its wake.
13:10The hounds and the wranglers were just as easy.
13:13The hounds might have been human once,
13:15before twisted into a grim parody of the canine form, drooling and hungry.
13:19Deadly to humans in packs, but still just as easily shredded by 096.
13:24The wranglers, ink-black snake-like entities that wrap around and crush their prey,
13:29presented somewhat more of a challenge,
13:31as they slithered around the shy guy's body and squeezed.
13:34But when 096 grasped the creature's bodies and squeezed back,
13:38the tables were very much turned.
13:40Every creature was another obstacle on the path to Gary.
13:43096 knew that it just needed to keep going,
13:46keep ascending levels,
13:48keep hunting,
13:49keep killing.
13:50Nothing so far had been a challenge,
13:52and it didn't anticipate that changing.
13:54Though, of course,
13:56the shy guy had no idea what was waiting for it on level 5.
14:01Now check out What If SCP-682
14:03has finally met his match in the back rooms,
14:05or could SCP-682 be contained in the back rooms for more?
