00:00On an island off the coast of Greenland, a dragonfly was having the weirdest day of its life.

00:05Nature's most efficient predator, it darted through the air, experiencing, for the first and last time in its brief lifespan,

00:12a voice that was not its own rang out inside its head, the soft voice of a human man.

00:19Hey, how's it going? the voice said, somehow ignorant of the dragonfly's inability to comprehend the word's meanings.

00:26You've got some interesting eyes to look through. It's impressive how fast you can fly.

00:32But the alien voice was really the least of the dragonfly's worries.

00:36It was a lot more concerned about the demon birds.

00:39Dragonflies had an inherent fear of birds, but these ones were something else.

00:45Giant squawking crows flying in from every angle, blue flames trailing behind them, countless eyes clustered around their heads.

00:53The dragonfly was zipping around erratically to avoid them.

00:56Seemingly having no idea that these nightmare crows were just figments of its new, warped imagination.

01:03It's unusual for dragonflies to have imagination.

01:07Well, at least outside of this island.

01:09Nearby, a rabbit running across the island suddenly became conscious of a force entering its head.

01:14A clumsy, uninvited guest, talking in a human voice that the rabbit couldn't really comprehend.

01:20What the rabbit could comprehend were the forces of hell seemingly popping up from the ground all around it.

01:26Huge, claw-like hands began rocketing out of the dirt and desperately grabbing for the small, furry creature as it,

01:32with equal desperation, tried to avoid them.

01:35These visions, these strange and terrible visions, were as real as anything else.

01:41A spider on a nearby web was having its first ever nightmare.

01:45It was tied into its own threads, while flies, with clawed feet and dripping fangs, circled it hungrily.

01:52It had devoured so many of these creatures, never once considering the life contained within them, and now here it

01:59was, at their mercy.

02:01They were getting closer, ready to pierce its exoskeleton and drink up its liquid innards, and all the time, it

02:08was hearing these strange noises.

02:10Noises that any of us would know as words spoken in English, but to the spider, were just nonsense.

02:17They were less nonsense to a nearby field agent of the SCP Foundation, who was much more conscious of the

02:23fact that his brain had just become a temporary duplex.

02:26The voice in his head was as clear as a bell, and the fact that he was hearing it concerned

02:31him deeply.

02:32So, you're one of the people keeping me here on this island?

02:36I don't know why you guys are so cagey.

02:38I just want to have the same liberties any other person is afforded.

02:42I've never committed a crime.

02:44You can't just hold me here without due process, the voice said.

02:48It wasn't the voice itself that made the field agent nervous.

02:51It was knowing what would inevitably happen afterwards, what all of his training had prepared him for.

02:57Some hallucinations that would really, really wreck his day if he didn't get a handle on them.

03:03And to think minutes ago, he was just sitting on a chair on the island, reading the morning paper and

03:09drinking coffee out of a paper cup.

03:11Then, the zombies came.

03:13Central casting shambling corpses straight out of the walking dead, emerging from the trees and beginning their slow but persistent

03:21walk towards him.

03:22They weren't real.

03:23He knew logically that they weren't real.

03:26His training had drilled into his head that he'd seen things that weren't real on the island, that he shouldn't

03:31react to them as though they were real.

03:33And that's very easy to both teach and agree to in a boardroom at a Foundation containment site.

03:39But it's a whole different deal when the stars of 28 Days Later are only feet away from you.

03:44So, the agent elected to make what, in hindsight, probably wasn't the wisest decision, but was the decision that made

03:51the most intuitive sense.

03:53Pulling out his Foundation issue sidearm and firing wildly at the zombies while screaming like Keanu Reeves in Point Break.

03:59His bullets flew right through the rotting holograms and whizzed off in all directions, causing other researchers and agents across

04:06the island to suddenly and justifiably panic,

04:08jumping for cover in every direction to avoid getting hit by a fast-moving stray.

04:13Oh goodness, it looks like an alien force is entering your mind too, and it's manifesting terrifying hallucinations.

04:20Is that a giant floating YouTube subscribe button?

04:22Oh god, it is. Seems like the only way to make it go away and spare yourself from even worse

04:44This is all completely normal to experience when you're trapped on an island with SCP-182, codenamed Ryder.

04:52What's he writing?

04:53Well, basically anything that's unlucky enough to get close to him.

04:57This 45-year-old man is one of the strangest enigmas the Foundation has ever encountered.

05:02A kind of living anchor for a free-floating consciousness with a 30-foot range,

05:07and any living being that enters that range will find 182's mind suddenly leaping into their brain like a hallucinatory

05:14hitchhiker.

05:15This isn't a full body-snatcher scenario.

05:18You're still nominally in control of yourself, while 182 simply shares your senses,

05:24like someone spectating in a video game.

05:26The one difference being that being spectated by 182 comes with some serious side effects.

05:32Namely, severe and extremely distressing visual and auditory hallucinations.

05:36Yay!

05:37The auditory hallucinations are mostly 182's voice talking to you,

05:41his primary mode of direct communication.

05:44More on that soon, don't worry.

05:46The visual hallucinations are a grab bag of pure insanity

05:49that will generally rattle even the most experienced of Foundation personnel,

05:53even if they expect the possibility.

05:55Pretty scary, huh?

05:56Rest assured, at least, that 182 doesn't intend to do this.

06:00He really wouldn't hurt a fly, just jump into its brain and drive it crazy.

06:04This is an entirely passive power.

06:07But intention doesn't actually matter when you're going cuckoo bananas and firing your gun in every direction.

06:13That's why the Foundation keeps him on a private island near Greenland for safekeeping.

06:18A question you may find yourself asking at this point is,

06:21who is this guy?

06:23And believe me when I say,

06:24it's a question that the Foundation has been equally eager to answer.

06:27The man known as SCP-182 is both deaf and mute.

06:32This is why all the Foundation agents stationed on the island where the anomaly is contained

06:36are required to be well-versed in American Sign Language as well as lip-reading.

06:41The other defining physical characteristic of the man is the extensive scarring over his abdomen and face,

06:47gained at an unknown point in his past.

06:49How exactly he got these scars is an ongoing mystery,

06:53because, unlike the Joker, he doesn't like to talk about it.

06:57Attempts to drill into the truth of the matter have resulted in considerable distress from 182,

07:02which enhances both the power and danger of his anomalous abilities.

07:06The leading theory from researchers on the case,

07:08extrapolated from contextual evidence gained from collective years in the anomaly's presence,

07:13is that they might be the result of experiencing torture at the hands of some unknown individual.

07:18If this is the case, we don't yet know why 182 was being tortured.

07:24One theory is that the torture is connected to the development of both his communication disabilities

07:28and his anomalous capabilities.

07:31Under this theory, whoever was torturing 182 might have been doing it to actively induce the powers for some unknown

07:37reason.

07:38If this theory is true, it presents the concerning possibility that 182 was potentially just one of many subjects being

07:45experimented on

07:46in order to create some substrate of anomalous individuals.

07:50Foundation research into this particular angle is ongoing.

07:54There is a cruel irony in all of this.

07:56If 182 did become the way he is by being the subject of ethically dubious scientific experiments,

08:02he'd soon experience much more of that at the SCP Foundation,

08:06especially as researchers began to ponder whether the anomaly's abilities could have some value

08:11in addressing the perplexing and sometimes frightening mindsets of other anomalies.

08:16While 182 doesn't have any meaningful control over his powers,

08:20especially dangerous or inscrutable ones,

08:23attempts to do this with some of the more dangerous Foundation detainees,

08:27such as SCP-682, the hard-to-destroy reptile,

08:30and SCP-076-2, Able, have been fruitless

08:34because of the horrific nature of being inside their minds.

08:38Today, even bringing up either of these two can cause a similar level of distress to invoking 182's past,

08:44so it's expressly forbidden as part of the anomaly's containment protocols.

08:49Another researcher on the team suggested using 182 as a kind of translator for anomalies

08:54that are sentient but are unable to communicate.

08:57182 could ride their minds and transcribe their innermost thoughts and experiences.

09:02While the researcher's heart was in the right place, the request was still denied,

09:06on the basis that it would potentially expose 182 to so many people working at the Foundation.

09:12If you're wondering why that's such a problem for an anomaly that doesn't seem to have a malevolent bone in

09:17his body,

09:17well, I can address that now.

09:20Just to make sure you understand the true potential danger that SCP-182 poses to everyone assigned to help contain

09:27him,

09:27I'm going to show you one of the most disastrous incidents that resulted in several agent deaths and a near

09:33containment breach.

09:34And to help me explain this to you,

09:36I have a tape recording made by Agent Kovac during the onset of his incident.

09:40Let's just slot this into the tape recorder.

09:44Ah, yes, here we go.

09:46Yeah, so we got the letter this morning from O5 saying the sedation was approved.

09:51Dr. Sedens went out to tell 182.

09:53Guy seemed pretty happy, clapping his hands and everything like a little kid.

09:58Shot him up, he was out like a light.

10:00Slept a few hours, then Dr. Sedens went in to check on him, make sure he was still breathing.

10:05Don't want a casualty, yeah?

10:06Anyway, I'm in the other house.

10:08We got a good game of 21 when I hear Doc screaming his lungs out.

10:12Something about spiders or what?

10:14Those noises you just heard were seven gunshots let off in rapid succession not far from the recording.

10:21Kovac appears somewhat rattled by this, but not as much as one would expect.

10:25In the next section, the Johnny he refers to is, well, was,

10:30Agent Johnny Cross, who was also stationed on the island with him.

10:33Um, goddammit, we thought Doc had finally cracked.

10:36He'd been seeing little things out of the corner of his eye for a few days.

10:40We figured 182 had got to him.

10:42We drew straws to see who'd have to go get his body.

10:45Johnny drew the short straw.

10:47Guy was fresh out here, just being assigned last week.

10:50Dammit, I should have gone instead.

10:52Johnny's screams started a few minutes later.

10:55Everyone got up at this point and started walking up there, snow everywhere.

10:59Should have trance out of it before.

11:01There was another eight gunshots you just heard, followed by the distinctive click of a pistol firing dry.

11:07The sound after that were of the shooter reloading a new magazine into said pistol.

11:11I'm going to play the tape again.

11:14These things.

11:16We got to the house where 182 was.

11:18He was lying on the bed, looking dead to the world.

11:21Thirty, maybe thirty-five feet away, Johnny and Doc were sitting on the floor, drooling.

11:26While Doc was, Johnny was dead.

11:29Blood oozing out of his mouth looked like he bit his own tongue off.

11:33All three of us knew what happened.

11:34I started to see things.

11:38Dairand.

11:39I don't know about the other guys.

11:41I'm holed up in the building.

11:43Can't wait for the boat to arrive.

11:45Hope I can hold off long enough.

11:47I won't subject you to the audio that remains.

11:49In short, it was 17 minutes of violent chaos.

11:52Intermittent screaming, gunshots, doors being opened and closed, and one more rather poignant message from Agent Kovac.

11:58I've seen what happens to those guys that go too far.

12:02I'm not ending up like that.

12:04I'm not going to see those things.

12:07Bye.

12:08There was a gunshot after that, followed by two hours of silence before the tape ran out of data storage.

12:13The aftermath that backup found on the island told the whole story.

12:17Everyone, except SCP-182, was dead, most of them having shot and killed each other.

12:23Agent Kovac was found lying next to the tape recorder with a bullet in his brain.

12:26The questions immediately arose among the rest of the off-site research team.

12:31How and why did all this happen?

12:33Eagle-eyed aspiring researchers in the audience have likely already spotted it.

12:37The secret was buried in some of Agent Kovacs' very first words.

12:41It was all in the sedatives.

12:43If you've ever taken NyQuil before, you're likely aware of the fact that the dreams you have while on those

12:49sleeping pills

12:49are like something taken straight out of a terrifying SCP story.

12:53And, as it turned out, for the most powerful sedatives approved for use on 182,

12:58the exact same rules applied, but with far more horrifying consequences.

13:03Put simply, while asleep as a result of these sedatives,

13:06182 experienced horrifying, nightmarish hallucinations.

13:10And because of the nature of his anomalous abilities,

13:12these far more intense and immediate hallucinations were imposed onto everyone and everything unlucky enough to be around him at

13:19the time.

13:19This resulted in, essentially, a tidal wave of madness washing over all the Foundation agents and researchers present,

13:26and the horrific violence that followed.

13:29Following this, a new amendment was made to the containment procedures of SCP-182,

13:34forbidding any sleep aids.

13:36Really, it's the least we can do.
