Her vocalizations act as a severe auditory anomaly dependent on the listener's genetics: exposure causes temporary infertility in women, while men entering sleep cycles after exposure fall into a coma, during which non-essential tissue spontaneously separates from their bodies to form bizarre, chimeric, and often non-viable hybrid creatures (designated SCP-336-1). 00:00The man at the counter was deaf. That was the first thing Abdul noticed. He didn't speak. Instead, he either

00:06made hand gestures that Abdul didn't understand, or wrote messages in Arabic script on a little portable blackboard with a

00:13piece of chalk.

00:14It is possible to survive your meeting with her, the chalkboard said, but not unaltered. Abdul was curious. As a

00:22sultan in this great land, his wealth and nobility had afforded him a luxurious lifestyle. If he heard tales of

00:28some fine fruit from foreign lands, his men would find it for him.

00:32If he wanted a new exotic beast for the menagerie at his grand palace, he needed only to ask to

00:38make it so. And of course, if he wanted women of any kind and any number, nobody would dare deny

00:46him his request.

00:48Then, he heard of the impossible woman who lived in a building next to the town bazaar. A woman who

00:54was said to be as old as humanity itself, but didn't show a day of it, let alone an eon.

01:00Abdul knew that he would need to arrange a meeting. One of his men placed a leather sack full of

01:06gold coins on the counter. That was a language that the deaf behind the desk definitely understood.

01:12He said that the lady would be ready to see his majesty in just a moment, writing the words down

01:17with practice speed on the blackboard.

01:19Moments later, the door to the woman's chamber opened, and Sultan Abdul was nodded in. His guards, of course, would

01:26have to remain outside.

01:27That was fine. It wasn't like he wanted an audience for something like this, anyway.

01:32The guards found the whole thing to be fishy, but to defy the Sultan's command would often mean a one

01:38-way ticket to the headsmen.

01:40The Sultan walked in, and the doors closed behind him, being careful not to trap any of his flowing silks

01:46underneath.

01:47The room was nice for your average medieval Arabian. Cushions, fine rugs, gold-lined ornamentation.

01:55But that was nothing compared to the luxury that the Sultan was used to.

01:59He made a promise to himself that if he'd been fleeced here, he'd have the whole building burnt to the

02:05ground with everyone in it.

02:07He wasn't the kind of man who liked being made a fool of.

02:09And then, he saw her.

02:12She was sitting on top of a pile of fine cushions, staring lovingly at a full-length mirror.

02:18She was pretty, at least to the Sultan's eye.

02:21Pale and curvaceous, with long flowing black hair.

02:24But she could hardly eclipse some of the beauties in his harem.

02:28Stranger still, he noticed something was wrong with her legs.

02:32The skin. It appeared bumpy and rigid in places.

02:36Less like average human skin, and more like, well, the scales of a reptile.

02:41Such a strange and unpleasant deformation.

02:44The Sultan wrinkled his nose and cringed in a disgust that he didn't even bother to conceal.

02:50But strangely, the woman didn't notice.

02:53If she did, she didn't care.

02:55She was too entranced by staring lovingly at her own reflection.

03:19Because they were in medieval Arabia, and YouTube wouldn't be invented until 2005.

03:23Instead, the woman with the scaled legs put her hand over her mouth and simply yawned.

03:30So, she said, what do you want?

03:32Must have been important if you thought it was worth interrupting my me-time.

03:36That voice.

03:37It was unlike anything the Sultan had ever heard before.

03:41That quiet, relaxed confidence.

03:44She sounded almost bored of his presence.

03:46Not like the woman back at the palace, so smiley and demure, laughing at his jokes and marveling at his

03:52stories.

03:53The woman hanging off of every word with such rapt attention.

03:57He was so shocked by the contrasts that he didn't even know how to feel.

04:01Should he be furious?

04:02And have her dragged out of the building by his guards and beheaded in the street?

04:06Or was the sensation he was experiencing...

04:10Curiosity.

04:10I am the great Sultan Abdul, he said, trying to load his voice with power and authority again.

04:17I commend respect for a thousand miles in every direction.

04:21There wasn't even a change in her facial expression.

04:24Good for you, she said.

04:27I'm Lilith.

04:28This was truly odd beyond measure.

04:30What was she thinking, talking to him like this?

04:33And why did he...

04:35Love it?

04:36It was as though he was someone else here, stripped of all the pretense of royalty and riches.

04:41It was oddly relieving, despite it all.

04:44The Sultan sat in this strange little room and conversed with this woman, this Lilith, for hours.

04:50Outside, the guards strained to listen, but they couldn't make out a word that either of them were saying.

04:55It must have been absorbing, because it seemed to have no end.

04:58They'd never guessed that, on the inside of that room, the Sultan had barely learned anything about Lilith in all

05:04that time.

05:04He'd never spoken to one so evasive, one so guarded with her secrets, but it made him all the more

05:12eager to unlock those very same secrets.

05:15Even though the Sultan's time ran out, and he resolved that he would return to this place another day to

05:20conclude his studies into this mysterious woman,

05:23the first one that he'd ever felt had challenged him.

05:27Little did he know, the greatest challenge would come later that night.

05:32The Sultan was fast asleep, not long after the sun fell.

05:36His guards, of course, had to be awake and alert, painstakingly making their rounds around the palace to ensure that

05:42no spies or assassins had snuck in under the cover of night.

05:45The Sultan was a powerful man, and as a result, there were many out there who wanted him dead.

05:51One guard, Bashar, had also been there at the bazaar earlier that day.

05:55He knew that something was strange about that woman in that room.

05:59A part of him expected to see her sulking through the palace halls, shrouded in darkness and clutching an assassin's

06:05dagger.

06:06When you guarded the Sultan, it paid a little to be paranoid, but she wasn't there.

06:11Still, he couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong.

06:14He needed to check the Sultan's bedchamber just to put his mind at ease.

06:18When he entered the room, he saw a shadow that seemed to be crouching over the Sultan's chest as he

06:23lay asleep in bed.

06:24The assassin, he knew his instincts were correct, but as the guard ran over, he noticed something odd.

06:31The shadow wasn't someone crouching on the Sultan's chest, at least not on the outside of his clothes.

06:36There was a huge bulge on the Sultan's abdomen, underneath the fabric of his fine silken bedclothes.

06:43Aghast, the guard pulled out a dagger and slashed through the fabric, only to see something impossible underneath.

06:49A woman really was kneeling on the Sultan's chest.

06:53Well, to call that creature a woman would be taking certain liberties with the concept.

06:57The thing was an abomination, vaguely human in shape, but covered intermittently in sandy scales and patches of wet, dark

07:06fur.

07:07It turned its head towards the terrified guard.

07:10Its skull was grossly elongated, flashing a mouthful of long, razor-edged teeth, all dripping with what looked like venom.

07:17It stared at the guard with bright yellow eyes, bisected by dark-slit pupils.

07:22The Sultan, somehow, was still completely unconscious.

07:26The guard opened his mouth to let out a scream, or to call for reinforcements, but it was already too

07:31late at this stage.

07:32The woman monster lunged onto him, knocking him to the ground with its full weight, and sunk its dripping fangs

07:39straight into the soft flesh of the guard's neck.

07:42For anyone who's well-versed in their studies of Jewish mythicism, or in some of the lesser-known elements of

07:47biblical history outside of your Sunday school classes,

07:50you've probably been pointing at the screen and screaming this whole time, because you know exactly what's up with SCP

07:57-336, or the name she prefers to go by, Lilith.

08:02So, let's get our ekkles steel politics straight real quick, before the comments really do a number on us.

08:08Lilith, as a figure, never appeared in the Hebrew Bible.

08:11Only Lilith, a female demon in the book of Isaiah.

08:15However, in sources of Jewish folklore, like the alphabet of Sirach, Lilith was presented as the first wife of Adam,

08:22the first man, before God went and made Eve out of one of Adam's ribs.

08:27Lilith supposedly left because she didn't want to submit to Adam's desires.

08:31So naturally, most interpretations see her get turned into a child-devouring demon after that.

08:36She fell off the map for a time, appearing in different legends and myths, at least according to some interpretations,

08:43until she was discovered and contained by the SCP Foundation, who started to find the full extent of her bizarre,

08:50anomalous attributes.

08:52If you were looking anywhere but her legs, she'd seem to be just a very normal woman.

08:56And if you were looking at her legs, you'd probably need a second to determine that this wasn't just really

09:02intense psoriasis.

09:04You really are looking at reptilian scales.

09:07But having strange, scaly legs, like some turn-of-the-century-traveling freakshow act, isn't actually enough to get you

09:13contained by the SCP Foundation,

09:15despite what the Serpent's Hand pamphlets might try to tell you.

09:18When Lilith really gets strange is when she starts talking.

09:22No, not because she's introverted, rude, and admittedly a little narcissistic,

09:27but because of the fact that hearing her voice can literally mutate your body in different ways.

09:32And the difference determines whether or not you have a Y chromosome, with a little caveat that we'll get to

09:38later.

09:39If you're not in possession of a Y, then the worst you're looking at is mostly temporary infertility,

09:45with the infertility lasting proportionately to how long you speak to her.

09:49If you're just exposed to her voice for a few minutes, then you don't need to be worried about getting

09:54pregnant for a few weeks.

09:55If you talk to her for a few hours, expect months or years before you can start trying for a

10:00baby.

10:00And if you've moved into an apartment with her, it'd basically be like getting a non-invasive hysterectomy.

10:07If you find yourself in possession of a Y chromosome, then you're in for a way weirder experience.

10:13The first step to actually activating her anomalous abilities is to speak to her for a two to three hour

10:18period, which isn't easy.

10:20Her mix of shyness and self-absorption doesn't make her a very fun conversation partner.

10:25But if you manage to stick it out and expose yourself to enough of her voice, then what happens next

10:31will get supremely odd.

10:32You'll actually feel completely normal, which is part of the weirdness.

10:36But the anomalous effects will begin to set in the next time you start your regular sleep cycle.

10:41Rather than going into REM, you'll instead slip into a completely unresponsive coma for six to eight hours.

10:48While you're doing that, your body will lose around a hundred grams of tissue that you can survive without, mainly

10:55from your ribcage, because, you know, symbolism.

10:58This wad of tissue will begin to transform into a completely new adult female creature that is painlessly birthed out

11:05of your body.

11:06But these entities are a lot more, um, imperfect, we'll say, than Eve.

11:14Typically, they're always some bizarre combination of different creatures, including human, sand viper, bonelli's eagle, a sadic lion, auroch, Mongolian

11:23wild horse, and even wild goat.

11:25Those are just the ones the Foundation have managed to definitively prove so far anyway.

11:29These entities will typically be incredibly unstable genetically, and as a result, most of them don't end up surviving for

11:37more than a couple weeks.

11:39Whether or not they have longevity, though, these creatures are always extremely vicious and aggressive, so it's best for regular

11:46humans to just keep their distance at all costs.

11:48The strange thing is, even Lilith herself has no interest in these creatures, remarking on them with mild disdain.

11:55While she's never really been forthcoming in discussing how any of this works, she's at least been generally very collaborative

12:02with the Foundation in ensuring her own containment.

12:04In order to avoid passive exposure that could lead to outcomes like what the unfortunate Sultan and his staff experienced,

12:12the Foundation has made a special mask for Lilith to wear constantly, which is feasible, given that she doesn't need

12:19to eat or drink.

12:20The mask contains a real-time voice modulator, and ensures that she can still speak and communicate without anyone needing

12:26to actually expose people to her real voice.

12:29So far, this has actually been very effective for her containment.

12:33But just to err on the side of caution, the Foundation also mandates that only people without Y-chromosomes can

12:39actually enter Lilith's cell.

12:41It's better to risk someone potentially being infertile for a few weeks if the mask fails, than manifesting any actual

12:47monsters.

12:48But the eagle-eyed and eared of you will have noticed that earlier, I mentioned there was a slight caveat

12:55to Lilith's anomalous abilities.

12:57And that caveat concerns the koin-modal haplotype, connected to the Y-chromosome Aron, the hypothesized recent common ancestor among

13:06a certain Hebrew priest class known as the koinim.

13:09If you're a part of this line and you hear the voice of Lilith, you're going to get a very

13:14different outcome from the hybridized monster creatures produced by most chromosome wires.

13:19Instead, your body will produce fully developed adult female humans who will have some inbuilt intelligence and the ability to

13:27speak the language of her father.

13:29In other words, if you've won this particular genetic lottery, Lilith really won't know you from Adam.
