00:00The D-Class personnel gathered around a campfire made of chopped-up chair legs.
00:04They debated which one of the captured SCP Foundation personnel they should cut up,
00:09cook, and eat next. They weren't out in the middle of the wilderness. Instead,
00:14they were sitting inside a long, wide hallway with wet carpets and gaudy yellow walls.
00:20On another floor, a group of SCP Foundation researchers were in what looked like a beautiful
00:25early 20th century hotel, enjoying all the refinements of old-world luxury. But there
00:32was a downside, something that put a dent in the enjoyment of it all. The eldritch entity in a
00:38business suit with a monstrous tentacled face, attempting to sucker them into a deal where
00:44their very souls were little more than collateral. And on another still, a mixed group of researchers
00:51in D-Class had allied with what seemed like a group of post-apocalyptic survivors wearing cobbled
00:56together outfits. They were running through what seemed like an endless parking garage,
01:01where they were chased by horrific half-human, half-dog entities, and demonic floating grims
01:07in the dark. Only in the backrooms. You'd need to be trapped in an extra-dimensional nightmare world,
01:15somehow even more secluded than the backrooms, to have never heard of the backrooms.
01:20The SCP Foundation has tried to suppress knowledge of its existence, but this world, seemingly built
01:26out of the faded memories of our own, has broken containment in every sense of the word. Now it
01:32seems impossible for even the most powerful group in all of human history to put a lid on it.
01:38Strangely, it was neither the SCP Foundation nor any other of their well-known groups of interest
01:43that first stumbled onto the interdimensional horror that is the backrooms. It wasn't even one of the
01:49power users on the Pairwatch forums, as far as we know. No, the first person to blow the whistle
01:56on the backrooms was a to-this-day unknown user on 4chan, who posted a photograph of Level Zero's
02:02iconic and terrifying yellow hallways with the following caption.
02:06If you're not careful, and you no-clip out of reality in the wrong areas, you'll end up in the
02:12backrooms, where it's nothing but the stink of old moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow, the endless
02:18background noise of fluorescent lights, and maximum hum buzz, and approximately 600 million square miles of
02:24randomly segmented empty rooms to be trapped in. God save you if you hear something wandering around
02:30nearby, because it sure as hell has heard you. Words perhaps inspired by personal experience,
02:37because as far as we know, this particular user has never posted anything again.
02:43The Foundation had been collecting second-hand accounts for years before actually putting together
02:48a large number of strike teams for an actual excursion. They studied the many ways that a person
02:53can no-clip into the backrooms. It's essentially a process of quantum tunneling between dimensions
03:00by entering an area that some backroom scholars refer to as a null zone, a place where the dimensional
03:06fabric is thin enough that a person with the right knowledge and tools could pass through at will.
03:12For entering the backrooms, this often means carrying out any number of seemingly arbitrary actions,
03:18such as touching the darkest wall in an abandoned warehouse, or seeking out a glitch chair and
03:25making physical contact with it to break the rules of reality. But because all that sounds like a lot
03:31of hard work, the Foundation instead took the knowledge they gained here and teamed up with a number of
03:36their in-house reality warpers and thaumaturgists. They created an auto-clipping chamber, a dimensional travel
03:44device that could send whole groups of people and objects to random floors of the backrooms where they
03:50could gather data and hopefully find their way back to tell the tale. The one problem was that even with
03:56all the skills the SCP Foundation possessed, the one thing they couldn't determine was what level of the
04:02backrooms the auto-clipping chamber actually sent people to whenever it was activated. Still, in some ways,
04:09this was actually seen as a plus, because it would at least allow them to randomize their experiments
04:15fully and thus collect a wider breadth of data than if they'd actively had to choose floors.
04:20But it also meant that nobody back at HQ would have felt bad if a team was immediately wiped out
04:26by
04:26some horrifying entity or phenomenon, seeing as the level wasn't specifically chosen by anyone.
04:33That's always a bonus, ending a Foundation experiment with somewhat of a clear conscience.
04:39Things would immediately start getting a hell of a lot messier after this.
04:43The problem with sending people to fully random backrooms levels is not knowing what kind of
04:48equipment is needed to safely inhabit these levels. One group of researchers found this out the hard way
04:54when they were transported to level 7, known as thalassophobia to some. This level appeared to just
05:00begin in a flooded room with outdated furnishings, but upon entering the floodwater, it became evident
05:06that this room gives way to a seemingly infinite ocean of dark, icy horror underneath. Not exactly a
05:13place you'd want to buy a vacation house. Not wanting to remain in a soggy 70s room forever,
05:19some of the researchers followed their curiosity and attempted to swim down into the ocean, hoping that
05:25they'd gain more usable knowledge there. They did, in a sense, gain knowledge, and all it cost them
05:32was their lives. Some were attacked by Tiny, one of the two entities of level 7, a powerful fishman
05:39with a trident that rends any intruders that happened to wander into his territory. Some of the others,
05:45who managed to escape Tiny and swim deeper, still holding their breaths, encountered something even
05:50scarier. A gargantuan beast known as the Thing from level 7, a titanic sea monster that devoured
05:58them all in a single goal. In another level, a team of D-class personnel were trapped in what appeared
06:04to be a terrifying dark void. The void's beating heart was a warm red light emanating from the center.
06:09When they stumbled in the direction of the red light, they soon saw that it was a huge, magnificent
06:14YouTube subscribe button, and found that by clicking on it, they could subscribe to the SCP Explained
06:20YouTube channel, and use our videos to understand their situation and perhaps even survive it. Hey,
06:26maybe you should do that too. Just saying. Some were sent to levels that at first appeared much more
06:32normal, but were actually hiding much darker secrets. One of these was level 9, the suburbs,
06:38which appears to be a typical American suburb in the middle of the night, with the only light provided
06:43by the gently fizzing street lamps. To several members of the mixed D-class and research team,
06:49it seemed that this neighborhood looked almost exactly like the one they'd grown up in,
06:53even though they'd all grown up in different neighborhoods, and in some cases, even different
06:58countries. Still, despite noting the logical impossibility of it all, they couldn't help but
07:04all feel a shared sense of melancholy as they passed through those darkened streets, thinking about
07:09times long gone, paths not taken, things left unsaid. Given the quasi-nostalgic liminal nature of the
07:18backrooms as a space, slipping into these states of ennui is often to be expected. People have long
07:24since wondered how exactly the backrooms worked on a mechanical level. Did it ever exist prior to
07:30humanity? And if it did, how was it built out of such distinctly man-made aesthetics? There are two
07:38options, depending on which way you believe the stream of causality flows here. If you think
07:43that humanity came before the backrooms, then perhaps it's some kind of physicalization of the
07:48norosphere, similar to the dream world of the Wuneroy, only physical. A world built from human
07:55imagination, half-forgotten memories, which would account for the eerie liminal feeling of both the
08:01backrooms and the null zones that can lead to the backrooms. They have the melancholy feeling of
08:07reminiscing about times long gone, because the place is built out of our reminiscing.
08:12If you think the river flows in the other direction, and despite its superficial qualities,
08:18the backrooms existed before the dimension we know, it paints an even more frightening and surreal
08:24picture. Perhaps the backrooms is like the Platonic world of forms, the perfect ideal representation of a
08:31concept that only ever enters our world as a kind of shadow of itself, projected by some unknown light
08:38source. The backrooms is a developer space for our universe, where the static models for everything we
08:45know and interact with sit like dormant code. Perhaps if you could somehow search every level,
08:51you'd even find a version of yourself, T-posing in the darkness, casting the shadow that is you.
09:00But none of this philosophy could help the team trapped on level 9 from what was coming for them.
09:06Before they could even snap themselves out of their kenopsic state of contemplation,
09:10another group of horrific entities closed in on them. These were giant human eyeballs,
09:15walking on spider-like legs made out of their own nerve endings, and firing beams of caustic white
09:21light out of their pupils, like directed energy weapons. When one of these beams of light hit an
09:27unfortunate D-class, their body immediately began crumbling into ash, seemingly just slow enough
09:33that they could still feel and be aware of the fact that it was happening. The rest didn't feel
09:39like waiting around in the suburbs to question the beings that had just utterly disintegrated a
09:43member of their party, so they decided to turn and make tracks instead. It was the complete opposite
09:50for the team of mobile task force operatives who'd been zapped into level 15, the futuristic hallway.
09:56The insane irony of the fact that with their training, tactical armor, and a variety of weaponry,
10:02they'd have been the perfect team to take on a group of roving backrooms entities.
10:06But instead, here in the futuristic hallway, which is a series of long stark chrome tunnels that feel
10:13like something out of an old sci-fi movie, their greatest enemy is not something they can fight,
10:18starvation. That's because level 15, like many levels of the backrooms, is actually completely
10:24devoid of entities, and is instead extremely dangerous by just how difficult it is to get out.
10:31It was a situation where none of the mobile task force's training could help them.
10:35They were in the hands of pure chance, with the procedure of detecting, or better yet,
10:40generating a way out of this place being hopelessly complicated, even for someone who did enter with
10:46a cheat sheet. And sadly, they did not. They had just enough food rations for a few days. But after
10:53that? Well, at least they had their weapons, in case they had any ideas for an alternative exit.
11:01However, you shouldn't let the horrors of the futuristic hallway trick you into thinking that
11:06there won't be incredibly dangerous entities on most levels of the backrooms. Thankfully, with the
11:12Foundation research team spread out over so many levels, we've been able to collect a large number
11:17of entries on these awful things. We'll give you just a few of them here as a primer, so you
11:23can know
11:24what you're up against before you go seeking out any glitch chairs to start your own backrooms adventure.
11:29One of the most famous is Entity 3, a type of creature known colloquially as a Smiler. They
11:37manifest as a glowing, grinning set of eyes and teeth in the darkness, hoping to catch you off guard
11:42before going in for the kill. Entity 9, the Facelings, are humanoid and incredibly human-like
11:49things that don't have faces. They're frightening to look at, but are mostly harmless, and in some cases
11:56are even actively benevolent. Unless you happen to taunt or hurt them, then expect them to be just
12:02as dangerous as an extremely angry human who still has a face. Entity 10, the Skin-Stealers,
12:10aren't nearly as chill. In their plain form, they're humanoid creatures with a kind of blobby white skin.
12:17You're much more likely to encounter them after they've attacked a human and peeled off their skin
12:21and started wearing it like a suit to fool other wanderers like you. If you happen to run into a
12:27person who's actually a Skin-Stealer, there are only two ways to tell. One is to pay attention to their
12:34speech, because Skin-Stealers cannot put together a coherent human sentence. The other is to prick the
12:40skin, because unlike humans, Skin-Stealers have viscous but completely clear blood. Perhaps one of the most
12:48peculiar entities is Entity 12, the Dunk. This is a small and very intelligent elephant-like creature,
12:55which can be rowdy and territorial, but can also be trained and domesticated by humans with enough
13:00patience and care. A Dunk will be a loyal friend to the end, but remember that a tamed Dunk is
13:07only
13:07as trustworthy as its master. A Dunk can perform acts of horrific violence if ordered by the person who
13:13tamed it. And one of the most diabolical and dangerous backroom entities of all is known as
13:19Entity 67. No, you shouldn't make a 6-7 joke about that in the comments. It's a dead meme. Let
13:26it go.
13:27These entities are a hostile and downright sadistic species known as the party-goers. Large yellow
13:34humanoids with permanent smiles and leech-like arm appendages. They use the trappings of nostalgic
13:41childhood parties to lure in backroom's wanderers, whom they'll either torture to death and eat,
13:46though not necessarily in that order, or bite to turn them into another one of them. One thing that
13:53always seems true about the backrooms is that it's endlessly creative in figuring out ways to kill you.
14:00But would you like the SCP Foundation to keep journeying into the backrooms and uncovering more of the
14:05freaky floors and evil entities? Tell us in the comments down below. And don't hesitate to let
14:11us know what your favorite part of the backrooms lore is, so we can cover it all in a future
14:16video.
