South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced a series of new measures aimed at reducing illegal migration and strengthening border controls. The plan includes tougher penalties for employers who hire undocumented workers, faster deportation procedures, and the creation of a biometric registration system to combat identity fraud. The announcement comes amid growing public concern over unemployment and rising tensions linked to anti-foreigner demonstrations. While emphasizing the need to enforce immigration laws, Ramaphosa urged citizens not to take matters into their own hands and warned against violence, misinformation, and discrimination targeting foreign nationals living in the country.

00:00Government of Employment and Labor has launched the phase recruitment of 10,000
00:06inspectors for this financial year as I announced during the State of the
00:11Nation Address. We're going to increase the penalties including imprisonment for
00:18employers who violate our Immigration Act. We cannot have a situation where
00:26employers who after being charged and found guilty of violating our laws merely
00:32pay a fine and continue employing undocumented foreign nationals whom they
00:37exploit. To address violations of immigration and labor laws in the
00:43transport sector we are implementing a plan that has been developed with the
00:50logistics and freight industry as well as our labor organizations. The second part
00:57of our response is to secure our borders. Every sovereign nation has a
01:04responsibility to know who enters its territory, why they are entering and how
01:10long they are permitted to stay. Secure borders are not a sign of hostility
01:17towards other countries. They are a fundamental requirement of a sovereign
01:23and well-governed State. Accordingly we are taking further measures to secure our
01:29borders. We will therefore continue to invest in modern technology, infrastructure
01:36and personnel to ensure that our borders are secure while facilitating legitimate
01:42trade, travel and economic activity.
