Minnesota leaders, including Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, have spoken out in defense of the Somali community following repeated attacks by U.S. President Donald Trump. Officials said no imminent federal immigration raids were planned, emphasizing that local police will not cooperate with federal authorities on immigration enforcement. Mayor Frey called Trump’s remarks “ridiculous” and praised the Somali community for their contributions to the Twin Cities.

00:00we are here to respond to a number of credible reports from several media
00:15outlets relaying that there are as many as 100 federal agents that will be
00:22deployed to the Twin Cities with a specific focus on targeting our Somali
00:27community to our Somali community we love you and we stand with you that
00:34commitment is rock-solid Minneapolis is proud to be home to the largest Somali
00:40community in the entire country they've been here for decades targeting Somali
00:48people means that due process will be violated mistakes will be made and let's
00:55be clear it means that American citizens will be detained for no other reason
01:00than the fact that they look like they are Somali that is not now and will never
01:06be a legitimate reason and by the way there are more than 80,000 Somali people
01:14living in many in Minnesota almost all of them are both documented and citizens to
01:22to again villainize an entire group is ridiculous under any circumstances and
01:28the way that Donald Trump is consistently doing it I think calls into question major
01:35constitutional violations and it certainly violates the moral fabric of what we
01:41stand by in this country as Americans just earlier today we saw sadly the
01:50president of the United States open his mouth to take a whole group of people a whole country of
01:57people and denigrate just based on where they come from the Twin Cities is not a
02:04place that tolerates or embraces hate to say that the hateful and damaging rhetoric that
02:11we're hearing from Washington DC right now is reprehensible and it is not something that represents who our
02:18community is or who our country can be the words that founded this country the words that launched
02:25this American experience start with we the people and I believe that the sacred moments in American
02:34history are the moments we've had to decide who the we is who gets to be included in the we do we mean
02:44black people do we mean women do we mean immigrants do we mean gay and lesbian teenagers what we we have to
02:53decide who is a part of the we when we say we the people we the people and so when we talk about attacks
03:03racist Islamophobic xenophobic attacks on our Somali community and you compete you combine that with what
03:13mayor fry just said the vast majority of our Somali community are citizens so what he who he just attacked
03:20isn't just Somalis who he attacked is Somali Americans who he attacked is Americans and so if the president of the
03:28United States is telling you out loud that he hates Americans then I can't imagine a greater confession of
03:36incompetence to do the job that you've been hired to do than to say you don't believe that Americans
03:43belong in America that's what Donald Trump said to us today and so what you heard the president say
03:48today was that he is incompetent and incapable of being a president for the people of the United States
03:55because he just said out loud that he despises Americans thank you I am proud to say I'm Somali American
04:03this country welcomed me my family 26 years ago it has provided me a life that I did not have in Somalia
04:14we came here and we are thankful to be here I've been educated here got the opportunity to serve my
04:22community to be a council member I know many families are fearful tonight they are obviously everyone
04:32knows that our president is racist xenophobic Islamophobic and we are gonna fight that America has a history of
04:43fighting and stopping those kind of individuals who continue to divide people and divide communities
04:53I just want to be clear we are not confirming anything that has been in any of these reports and
05:00we don't have any official information ourselves I also ask that if demonstrations do happen around any type of
05:10immigration raid that they remain non-violent so that we can keep everyone in our communities safe so that we minimize the risk of any
05:20tragedy happening or the immigrant communities that are already suffering to suffer that much more if there is destruction in our
05:28neighborhoods
