00:00American health care system can be a nightmare to navigate and extremely expensive for regular
00:05people, but the idea that socialism is somehow going to fix that is a really questionable one.
00:10It's not that there are no problems with American health care, but socialist systems can have
00:14really scary results. For example, in Canada, which is a pretty similar nation with a socialized
00:19system, there are examples of people waiting months and even years for procedures that they
00:23have been approved for. In one particularly horrific case, one woman who was seeking medical
00:28care said that she actually developed terminal cancer as a result of how long it took to get
00:32medical attention. And in the UK, people can wait days in the emergency room just to be seen as a
00:38result of an overworked government-run system. While it's surely not perfect and definitely could use
00:43many reforms, the American health care system is cutting edge in terms of research and development
00:48and the fact that they're not socialized means that pharmaceutical companies are often willing to
00:53invest in American research. As a result, Americans often do get access to medications long before
00:59peers in other nations. So when we discuss what we can do to make health care more affordable and
01:04better for American citizens, socialism probably should not be on the table.
