Are Americans still afraid of "socialism"? Grace Mauser, co-president of the New York City Democratic Socialists of America, dives into the evolving perception of socialism in the United States.

Discover how polling reveals that when explained, even Republicans and Independents show openness to socialist principles, particularly regarding healthcare as a human right. Mauser discusses the shift in political rhetoric, from opponents labeling progressives as "socialists" to now using "communists" in an attempt to scare voters.

With socialists gaining a foothold in government, experience firsthand what it means to be governed by someone committed to progressive ideals. See how these elected officials implement new ideas and follow through on their promises, demystifying socialism and challenging ingrained fears.

00:00I think progressives and, you know, left-leaning Democrats are more used to these ideas.
00:08But even polling among Republicans and Independents, when you explain what you mean by socialism,
00:17they aren't necessarily hostile to it.
00:20So they may not like the word socialism, but if you say, you know, do you want health care?
00:27Like, do you want free health care? Is that a human right?
00:31Many, many people, even ones who identify as Republicans will say yes.
00:36Are Americans still afraid of the word socialism?
00:43Yes, fewer. Less and less of them, I think, are afraid of it.
00:50It's been funny to see over the course of the past year and a half,
00:55it used to be that our opponents would say, don't listen to them, they're socialists.
01:01But especially in New York, we've had success as socialists, we don't shy away from that.
01:08So now they're saying, don't listen to them, they're communists.
01:11They're trying new words to see what's scary.
01:15Some of you actually are communist.
01:16Some people are, yes.
01:19So that word's not that scary to us either.
01:23But I think, especially now that we have people in government,
01:29we have people in Congress, we have Zeran Mamdani as mayor,
01:34people will experience what it's like to actually be governed
01:38by someone who calls themselves a socialist.
01:42And then we'll see, it's not, it doesn't lead to bread lines or, you know, immediate catastrophe.
01:51But it means that there is someone who is taking principled stances,
01:55who is really trying to implement new ideas,
01:58and trying very hard to follow through on what they've said they were going to do.
02:03So I think the more people we have in government kind of showing what it looks like,
02:09the less scary it will become.
