00:01Antonio Williams, rookie wide receiver,
00:03four catches, 64 yards, and a touchdown.
00:05That was a loud four for 64, too.
00:07He had a third and 14, 33-yard catch on the deep over
00:11where Daniel showed some patience,
00:13let him clear everybody, really good protection.
00:15You needed it on third and long there.
00:17I was surprised the Eagles dropped so many defenders
00:19and didn't bring more heat.
00:21But they gave you, finally, a look that was opportune,
00:24and they took advantage of it.
00:25Williams also on his catch for 16 yards
00:28to get down to the one-yard line,
00:29routed up a Pro Bowl talent into Gene in the slot,
00:32really physical, kind of with his hands
00:34at the stem point of the route, and then he breaks inside.
00:37Also, the touchdown catch was a marvelous catch.
00:40I mean, that's not a great ball.
00:42That's low momentum's taking you in the other direction.
00:44He's got to make a hands catch
00:46and then not let the ball move when it touches the ground.
00:49It was never in doubt.
00:50It was the weirdest analysis, I thought,
00:52on the telecast after his touchdown catch.
00:54At one point, Burkhardt asked, is he down there?
00:57I'm like, what do you mean, is he down there?
00:58There's not a defender in the frame.
01:00Why would he be down?
01:01I did not understand that question.
01:03I give him the benefit of the doubt
01:04because I think he's really good.
01:05I was like, what?
01:06What are you asking?
01:07That was very strange.
01:09Anyway, Antonio Williams, awesome.
01:11And just while we're on the theme of rookies,
01:13how about Sonny Stiles?
01:15Give him a game ball as well.
01:16We'll make it a rookie game ball.
01:18Four tackles, a sack, two TFLs.
01:21Noticeable.
01:22People were worried.
01:23And my point in the preseason,
01:26they didn't blitz this guy.
01:27They're not bringing him downhill.
01:28The whole point is the A-gap stuff
01:30that you do in the Flores defense.
01:32He destroyed Saquon Barkley for a sack.
01:35Made a really nice tackle running in space for a minus three.
01:38Also got out in the flat on Barkley
01:40early in the game on a throw.
01:41You could just see that he can run.
01:43He's going to make a lot of big plays for them.
01:46Speaking of get out in the flat
01:47and make it some tackles, Nick Cross.
01:50Noticeable.
01:50Now, you're going to say to me,
01:52but Danny, what about how he lost his jockstrap
01:55in the middle of the field
01:56when Dallas Goddard ran around him for that touchdown?
01:58Yep, I saw that too.
02:00The other stuff though, hold on.
02:02He's a weapon close to the line of scrimmage.
02:04The defense coordinator
02:05and everybody else associated with Deronte Jones
02:07are going to be continuing to figuring out ways
02:10to get that guy going downhill because you see it.
02:12He is a short tackler.
02:13He moves so fast and closes on the football.
02:16Blew up one of those little bubble screens,
02:17a little misdirection kind of things.
02:19I think he even had a tackle for loss,
02:21maybe one or two in there as well.
02:22He is so lightning quick to the football
02:25when he can go downhill.
02:27He finished, by the way, with eight tackles
02:29and two TFLs.
02:30Team high, eight tackles.
02:32Physical, violent, tone setter.
02:33And you're right.
02:34He did make a play that he wanted back
02:36in a bad angle on the Goddard 43-yard touchdown.
02:39All right, Deronte Jones gets a game ball for me.
02:4151% blitz rate.
02:42I brought you here to blitz.
02:44I want you to be aggressive.
02:45Let's get off the bus blitzing.
02:47And let's blitz more, by the way.
02:48Ryan Flores blitzed over 80% of the time
02:50against the Packers.
02:52Keep on blitzing.
02:53We will blitz all night.
02:55If they cross that line,
02:56I'll take every last one of you out.
02:57You make sure they remember
02:59the night they played the Commanders.
03:01Second highest blitz rate in the league.
03:03This is why we're here.
03:04Deronte Jones, game ball.
03:05Let me get one more game ball.
03:08Fourth quarter, Jaden Daniels.
03:09First three quarters, Jaden Daniels,
03:11you can have that one.
03:12I want the fourth quarter version.
03:13He's going to give you a chance to win.
03:14And that's what winners do, right?
03:16Accurate.
03:16All of a sudden, elevates his game.
03:18Nine of 11, 100 yards, two touchdowns.
03:20A lot of the issues from early on, gone.
03:23Why was that?
03:24That's what they got to figure out.
03:25That's why they get paid money.
03:26I'm not really sure.
03:28They did hurry up a little more.
03:29I thought that helped them.
03:30Think about that.
03:31In the second quarter,
03:32they went to tempo on that 70-yard touchdown drive.
03:34It's funny.
03:35You get Cliff out of here.
03:35You slow down so you can have the huddle.
03:37Well, yeah.
03:37Then they went back to shotgun
03:38doing some zone read stuff here and there.
03:40It's like, oh, duh.
03:41He starts making plays
03:42because he's comfortable.
03:43Now, that's that sugar high.
03:44That's the short term.
03:45I'm doing the things I've done for a long time,
03:47so I'm going to look better doing it.
03:49But the ceiling, long term in this league,
03:51is the other stuff.
03:53So maybe, you know,
03:54they got to mix a little bit more of that in.
03:56We'll see.
03:58I thought Tim Settle,
03:59and only 35% of snaps looked really good.
04:01Now, it wasn't just being a smart car,
04:03space eater right there in the middle.
04:05You saw him pursuing the football a little bit,
04:06sliding down the line of scrimmage.
04:07I thought he was a factor in this game,
04:09and that was one of the question marks, right?
04:11It's sort of that rotational defensive tackle position.
04:13No Johnny Newton.
04:14No problem.
04:17Mike Sanristill.
04:19Last year was not pretty.
04:20This game would have fit in pretty well with last year.
04:23Five tackles and a TFL.
04:25Gave up the 64-yard completion to Wicks,
04:28who's not some stellar wide receiver one.
04:31He was okay in coverage, I thought.
04:34Then he turned his head to try to track the ball
04:35or figure out what was going on.
04:37And he completely stopped running.
04:39And then he gave up a touchdown,
04:40which I still don't really understand
04:41what he was doing there
04:42because you have a bunch of defenders to the inside.
04:45Instead of playing on the other side,
04:47toward the sideline,
04:47he's got his butt to the field,
04:49and he watches the outbreaker where there's no help.
04:52So someone's going to have to explain
04:54what was going on schematically
04:56or, I guess, more decision-making
04:58from Sanristill there.
04:59But if you make Hurts throw that ball inside,
05:01it's a lob ball with no zip
05:03because there's a blitz getting to him,
05:04and he's thrown off his back foot.
05:05You probably get someone to come over
05:07and break that up or pick that off, honestly.
05:10It's just not a great day for Sanristill.
05:13Deron Payne, $27,950,000
05:17against the salary cap this year.
05:19Was on the field a lot.
05:21Had a tackle.
05:22Not much of a factor at all.
05:23Every other guy was in the backfield a bunch.
05:25There were TFLs.
05:26There were quarterback hits.
05:27There was a bunch of disruption.
05:28Not from him.
05:31The running back plan.
05:32This will be the thing, I promise you,
05:35that I over-talk about the most this season
05:37and that you'll get annoyed by.
05:39And I mean you as in the person in your car right now.
05:42Because I'm just not going to play nice on this.
05:45My belief is that Rashad White is a third down back
05:47who can catch the football
05:49and who can possibly help you in pass protection
05:52and as a receiver.
05:53Okay?
05:54Rashad White in Tampa Bay
05:55was not a particularly effective ball carrier
05:57and certainly between the tackles.
05:59Way too much Rashad White on early downs
06:01for me in this game.
06:02In the first half, Bill is cooking.
06:05He's ripping off 11 and 9
06:06and he's shot out of a cannon
06:07and he's running with speed.
06:09And here comes Rashad White for whatever reason.
06:11He had a run on a give-up draw
06:13when it was like third and a million
06:15where he got nine yards.
06:16Because there was just a bunch of space.
06:18If you take that fake yardage,
06:20that kind of empty calorie play out of it,
06:22he had six carries in this game
06:25for 13 yards.
06:27Basically averaged two yards per carry.
06:29And they also gave him the ball in short yardage
06:31when they've got 250-pound Catron Allen
06:34or whatever he is
06:35standing on the sideline
06:36who they drafted to be a battering ram.
06:38I didn't understand that at all.
06:39So I'm pre-annoyed,
06:41but I guess now it's kind of in real time annoyed
06:44about Rashad White on early downs.
06:48Quick one to Adam Peters.
06:50Mikey Sanders still disastrous,
06:52trending in the wrong direction.
06:53Chica Conquo gets hurt.
06:55Ben Sinnott can't crack the field.
06:57Basically a special teams blocker.
06:58And Luke McCaffrey was inactive.
07:00Just going to drive me a little bit crazy.
07:02The first three-round draft picks
07:04should be entering kind of prime time
07:06of their career,
07:06either ineffective
07:08or not on the football field at all.
07:11The two-point conversion decision
07:14to put the ball in Bates' hands.
07:15Again, I didn't hate the call.
07:17I hate going to Bates there
07:19when you have so many playmakers
07:20who can help you.
07:24First half,
07:25offensive plan, design, David Blau.
07:27Maybe getting your feet wet.
07:28Maybe there's not enough time on the grass
07:30with all the different guys, etc.
07:31It looked like the Eagles were in the huddle too.
07:33They knew what was coming.
07:35So many punts.
07:36This defense did enough
07:37to win this football game.
07:38I know they gave up the big plays.
07:39I was there too.
07:39I saw those.
07:40This defense for Washington
07:41forced more punts than the Eagles did.
07:43You go three and out,
07:44three and out,
07:45three and out,
07:45three and out.
07:45Eventually, you'll give up something.
07:48That's what's going to happen.
07:48Second half, out of intermission, Danny.
07:50Three, three and outs in a row
07:51where it's a five-point game
07:52and the offense gets the ball back.
07:53Twice in great field position.
07:55Multiple times.
07:55Almost midfield.
07:56Make a play.
07:57Where is my playmaking?
07:59Where is the cape being put on?
08:00Where is my superstar quarterback
08:02to swoop in and run around
08:04and do something?
08:05They kept giving the Eagles the ball back
08:06over and over again
08:07without doing anything on offense.
08:09Yeah, three straight three and outs
08:10from the first quarter into the second
08:11before they finally put a drive together
08:13towards the end of that first half.
08:14And as you mentioned it,
08:15just not much doing there.
08:17You can't get away with that
08:18in today's NFL.
08:19Even if you don't score,
08:20you've got to change the build position.
08:21You've got to move the ball somehow,
08:22some way.
08:22They were going backwards.
08:23Wasn't good.
08:25All right, last gasser here
08:27and then we'll hit the phones.
08:27800-636-1067.
08:29Line them up.
08:30Game balls for the best.
08:31Gassers to the worst.
08:33Stefan Diggs had a good game,
08:35I thought, for the most part.
08:36Or I shouldn't say that.
08:37I think he had a helpful game.
08:39Four catches, 55 yards, and a touchdown.
08:41He dropped the pass
08:42when Daniels was standing on his own goal line
08:44and he was one-on-one with a linebacker.
08:46It was a good call.
08:47It was a great design by Blau
08:50and a ball hits him in the hands.
08:52He had another play that was a near drop.
08:54I'm not going to call it a drop
08:54because he and Daniels
08:55weren't really on the same page.
08:56He stops.
08:57Daniels wants him to keep going.
08:58But it's the penalty after the touchdown.
09:00That's really the only reason
09:01I'm giving him a gasser.
09:03Instead of the two-point conversion
09:04to try to tie it,
09:05you force your rookie kicker
09:07who's missed from 54
09:07and the last time he swung his leg
09:09and had an extra point block
09:10to kick a 48-yard extra point.
09:12Now, he drilled it
09:13and it worked out.
09:14But ask Brandon Aubrey and the Cowboys.
09:16He missed a 48-yard extra pointer
09:18after a penalty.
09:19It's a unique thing
09:21running out there,
09:21different rhythm.
09:22It's very strange.
09:23It's controllable.
09:23And so you look at some of the penalties
09:25that happen around the league
09:25if you guys watch the rest of football.
09:27When a quarterback was sacked
09:29and a guy's trying to avoid,
09:30you know,
09:30landing on him
09:31and puts his hands down to brace,
09:32still gets called for a penalty.
09:33A penalty is a progression
09:34where you're just trying
09:35to make a football play.
09:36Green Bay got penalized
09:37when Kyler Murray went down awkwardly
09:39and the guy was just
09:39not necessarily trying to kill him
09:41but ended up going head-to-head.
09:42That's inevitable.
09:42That's football.
09:43That's bad luck.
09:44That's controllable.
09:45The controllable needs to be controlled.
09:48There's,
09:48from eight years old
09:50for the kids that I coached
09:51all the way up to professionals
09:51who were millionaires.
09:53Inexcusable.
09:53No way around that.
09:54All right, to the phones we go.
09:55We'll start with
09:56Chris in Hyattsville on G&D.
09:58Chris, who gets your game ball?
09:59Who gets your gasser?
10:03Game ball, Antonio Williams.
10:05I think we may have gotten
10:07a real one, as they say.
10:09The thing I like about him
10:11is he is a route technician.
10:13He's not, I mean, he's fast,
10:15but he's not doing it
10:16based purely off the athleticism.
10:18So, I like that for a rookie.
10:21Gasser, I got to go Blau
10:24or the team.
10:27I don't, there was another instance
10:28where there was a delay of game
10:31coming out of a timeout off a punt.
10:33I don't know how or why
10:34that keeps happening,
10:35and I didn't like a two-point conversion
10:37for the reasons you guys just stated.
10:39Appreciate you, buddy.
10:40Thank you, bud.
10:41Yeah, we haven't talked a lot about
10:42that's probably worthy of a gasser.
10:44Delay of games in general
10:46are hard to stomach at the NFL level,
10:49but they can happen
10:50if there's confusion
10:51over resetting the clock or whatever.
10:53They're not all created equal.
10:55When they can never happen, Danny,
10:57and for some reason,
10:58the commanders, I think,
10:59lead the league in this.
11:00Out of a timeout
11:01or a TV timeout,
11:03they had a delay of game
11:04out of a commercial break.
11:06I just don't know
11:07how that's possible.
11:08Yeah, I can't get down with that.
11:10You've seen them before, too,
11:11as you mentioned,
11:11out of timeouts,
11:12out of stoppages,
11:13where you're somehow down
11:14at the end of the play clock.
11:15I'll never understand the operation.
11:16And again, I'm alone on this one.
11:19You know, yours is the running back thing.
11:21I can't have,
11:22in a tight game,
11:23on the road,
11:24in the division,
11:25burned defensive timeouts
11:26due to disorganization
11:27or we're not sure
11:28or whatever.
11:29They're too precious.
11:30Those timeouts
11:31are so unbelievably valuable
11:33where you can literally
11:34stop time.
11:35Like,
11:35Dr. Strange doesn't just use
11:37the time stone willy-nilly,
11:38people.
11:38It didn't end up hurting them,
11:39but when Daniels kills the timeout
11:41before the two-minute warning,
11:43they had two left
11:44in the two-minute warning,
11:45and if you don't get
11:45the fourth and two,
11:46it was right before
11:46the fourth and two play to Terry,
11:48but if you don't get
11:49that fourth and two play,
11:50you can still stop the clock
11:51with a two-minute
11:52and get the ball back
11:53around midfield.
11:54He comes over to Daniels,
11:55and Daniels says,
11:57good job there,
11:57or like,
11:58that was the right call,
11:59and I guess the point is
12:00Brady's making,
12:01you have to get it,
12:02so you got to be sure,
12:03but no.
12:05Yeah,
12:05it makes the game
12:06right here.
12:07In other words,
12:07you don't have any other chances.
12:09Exactly.
12:09When you squander a timeout
12:10previously,
12:10then squander that one,
12:11you could have had
12:12four total stoppages.
12:14If you don't get that fourth down,
12:15you'll have another chance
12:16at it, right,
12:17to stop them or whatever.
12:19When you're trailing,
12:20you want as much opportunity
12:21as possible,
12:21and they took that away
12:22from themselves
12:23by their own mismanagement.
12:24Let's go to Seth in Montana
12:25listening on the Odyssey app
12:26on Grant and Danny.
12:28Seth,
12:28who gets your game ball
12:29and your gasser?
12:32One game ball,
12:33and I'm going to disagree
12:34with one of your gassers.
12:36I'm going to give a game ball
12:37to Adam Peters
12:39for two game balls
12:40and a third guy
12:42that you guys haven't mentioned.
12:44One Antonio Williams,
12:45obviously.
12:46One Sonny Stiles,
12:47obviously.
12:48But one guy
12:49that I think
12:50is getting overshadowed
12:51because his best play
12:52of the game
12:53happened simultaneously
12:54to another insane play
12:56by Sonny Stiles.
12:57He's Joshua Joseph, man.
12:59If you saw that long arm
13:01he put on Lane Johnson,
13:02he put him on his butt.
13:06Lane Johnson is a guy
13:07that makes other dudes
13:09in the league
13:09look like Billy Bob
13:11from Farsity Blues.
13:12Like, Lane Johnson
13:13is no joke.
13:14And to draft two guys
13:16not in the first round
13:17that could be potential
13:18big players for us
13:20could be huge.
13:21Yeah, it's early.
13:22In the same way
13:23that after a game or two
13:25of someone struggling,
13:26I would say,
13:27too early to say,
13:28I don't want to claim
13:30a gigantic win
13:31for the Commanders
13:31on Josephs
13:32or Williams
13:32or whatever,
13:33but early returns
13:34are great.
13:35These guys look good.
13:35Joshua Josephs
13:36was one of my favorite people
13:37I saw out at training camp.
13:38The length,
13:38the speed,
13:39as an edge rusher,
13:40I think he's going to help them
13:41a lot.
13:42But if you didn't see the rep,
13:43I posted a video
13:44at Grant Paulson on X
13:45if you want to go see it.
13:46I think I might have it
13:47on Instagram as well,
13:48Grant H. Paulson.
13:49He ragdolls Wayne Johnson,
13:53ragdolls him
13:53on the Sonny Style sack play.
13:55He basically lifts him up
13:56and throws him
13:57into Jalen Hurts.
13:58It's awesome.
13:59Just throws him
13:59out of the club.
14:00Now, you were mentioning
14:02and zinging
14:03the 2024 draft class,
14:04understandably.
14:05Sandra's still second rounder,
14:06Newton's second rounder,
14:08Sinnott's second rounder,
14:09and Luke McCaffrey,
14:10third rounder.
14:11Behind Daniels,
14:12kind of Coleman sandwiched
14:13in there somewhere.
14:14So you're basically like
14:15two and four
14:16or whatever that looks like.
14:17But I would point out
14:18that Connerly yesterday
14:21did play really well.
14:22I've been nervous about him,
14:24but I liked his game.
14:25Lane is a really,
14:26really good punt returner.
14:27Made a couple catches
14:28and did some things
14:29at receiver as well.
14:31Bill is a seventh round pick
14:32in the 25 class,
14:33who's a starter,
14:34who looks like he can play
14:35in this league.
14:35That's a gigantic win.
14:37And it's very early,
14:38but Sonny Stiles,
14:39Antonio Williams,
14:40Joshua Josephs,
14:41and it was a small role.
14:42But Kaytron Allen yesterday
14:44was fine.
14:45I thought, like,
14:46I liked him better
14:46than Rashad White.
14:47That's what he's here to do.
14:48What he did yesterday,
14:48he's here to do that.
14:49So last year's draft class,
14:52pretty good.
14:52And then super early returns,
14:55but this year's draft class,
14:56super exciting,
14:57I would say.
14:58But yes,
14:58it goes without saying
14:5924 was a little bit ugly.
15:01But if you're Peters,
15:02I think there's a couple things
15:04now you can start
15:04to hang your hat on,
15:05maybe,
15:05if the trends continue.
15:07Let's go to Kevin
15:08in Arlington on the fan.
15:09What's up, Kevin?
15:11Hey, guys.
15:12Thanks for taking my call.
15:13Yeah, the only thing
15:13about 24, Grant,
15:15is we had six picks
15:16in the top 100.
15:17And yes,
15:18I'm very happy with
15:19Jaden, of course,
15:20and Williams,
15:21pardon me,
15:22not Williams,
15:23but Ben Coleman.
15:24That said,
15:25like you mentioned,
15:26I sent this to you,
15:26I think you do have to
15:28like the 25
15:28and 26 draft classes.
15:31But in terms of gassers
15:32and game balls,
15:34let me start the game ball
15:35for Owens.
15:37I think it's nice
15:38to have a special teams assassin
15:40brought back memories
15:41of Lorenzo Alexander.
15:43By the way,
15:44Kevin,
15:45I mean,
15:46that I'm glad
15:47you brought him up
15:47because we have not
15:48mentioned him on the show.
15:49that viral clip of,
15:52I posted it just off my TV,
15:53but it's everywhere.
15:54Everyone's got their own
15:55version of it from Fox
15:56because they showed
15:56the aerial view.
15:58That is one of the greatest
16:00individual single reps
16:01I've ever seen in my life.
16:03And I sent it to a couple
16:04of my buddies
16:04who are like high school
16:05football coaches.
16:06I'm like,
16:07you got to show this
16:07to your team.
16:09It's crazy.
16:10I mean,
16:10he takes out two dudes
16:12that are trying to
16:13keep him from getting
16:14to a player
16:15and then lifts the guy
16:16up off the ground
16:16and body slams him.
16:19Absolutely.
16:19So to me,
16:20you know,
16:20what I'm going to take
16:21to Dallas as a fan
16:22is that play
16:24and just his general play
16:25and the sunny style
16:27is blowing up hard.
16:28Okay.
16:28This is what we can be.
16:30We can be this physical,
16:31scary team.
16:33We just have to stay healthy.
16:34We've got to keep
16:35getting better and better.
16:36My only issue
16:37on the gasser side of it
16:38because all the other
16:38ones have been made,
16:39I got to give Adam Peters
16:41this gasser.
16:42We're in year three.
16:44We're still a question
16:45mark, it seems,
16:47at kicker.
16:48We're definitely
16:48question marks,
16:49in my opinion,
16:51and interior O-line depth.
16:52And that continues
16:53to be a bugaboo.
16:54And if we get hurt,
16:55I worry about,
16:56like we had with wide
16:57receiver a year ago,
16:59just we've got tomato
17:00cans behind starters.
17:01And then,
17:02of course,
17:03corner.
17:03A lot of more
17:04didn't work out.
17:05Santa's toes are grasped.
17:07Can't get any of us
17:07on the field.
17:08I mean,
17:09these are known
17:09issue areas
17:11for three years
17:12on the team.
17:13Interior O-line,
17:13corner,
17:14and kicker.
17:15And they're still
17:16potentially problematic.
17:17I'm glad the starters
17:18at the interior O-line
17:19played as well as they did.
17:21I might even give them
17:22a game ball
17:23because to me,
17:24the last play of the game,
17:26when you have that front
17:27versus our interior O-line,
17:29shame on you
17:30for making that call,
17:31David Blau.
17:32It's just a matter of
17:33those weren't our best players.
17:35And those are their best players
17:37in that line of scrimmage setting.
17:39Kevin,
17:39thanks as always,
17:40buddy.
17:40The thing I wanted to touch on,
17:42I probably should have done
17:44a game ball for it,
17:45their coverage units
17:46continue to be awesome.
17:48That is a legit strength.
17:49Washington's.
17:50Yeah.
17:50Their kick coverage,
17:51punt coverage.
17:52Izzo's a great specialty coach.
17:53It is flat out great.
17:54Their returns are good.
17:55Doesn't matter.
17:56You put back there.
17:57That's been nice.
17:57There's always a burst.
17:58They get to the 34 every time.
17:59Every time.
18:00I swear to God,
18:00they could put you back there
18:01and they'd get to the 36-yard line.
18:03I mean,
18:03I'd pull something,
18:03but your point stands.
18:05The coverage units are awesome.
18:08And Tyler Owens is now
18:08kind of the linchpin of that.
18:09It's so cool.
18:10Izzo's got to be the best
18:11in the building at his job.
18:13You know what I'm saying?
18:13If you're just,
18:14who's the best person at their job?
18:16It doesn't matter who's there.
18:17Tress is kicking nukes
18:18and they're down there flooding it.
18:20Tress may want to rethink
18:21the retiring thing.
18:22His first five punts of the year
18:24were 50-plus yards
18:25and he had a 60 in there.
18:26He was kicking the heck
18:27out of the ball yesterday.
18:29Grant and Danny on the fan.
