00:00Commanders lost.
00:01Not that the score matters.
00:03Really couldn't be more trivial, but they did lose 17-13 to the Detroit Lions
00:07in their second preseason game.
00:10Low scoring.
00:12Very interesting start.
00:15The Commanders scored first on a fumble recovery for a touchdown in the end zone.
00:19Then they tied it briefly.
00:21Stayed close with field goals.
00:23Lions took the lead in the third quarter on a one-yard Travion Williams run.
00:28And, of course, they held on with a late field goal.
00:32Jaden Daniels was out there for three plays.
00:35Big disaster.
00:36The tight ends kind of didn't hold their blocks well enough to execute the first play.
00:41Second play, I think maybe Julian Good-Jones even got blown up a little bit.
00:45Everybody was pointing out that, I can't remember who it was, Diggs.
00:48A couple of these other guys were out there.
00:50We were wide open.
00:50It was just a play that couldn't develop.
00:52Jaden kind of chucks it like some sort of weird swing pass thing that basically gets rid of it.
00:57Right.
00:58And then the third play was the delayed handoff that got some yardage, but whatever.
01:02And that was it.
01:03That's an ultimate give out play.
01:04Third and 20.
01:05And that was it.
01:05They just wanted to get off the field.
01:07And give Tress some room to punt.
01:09So that was very disappointing from the sense that he just wanted to get a little excited.
01:15By the way, it wasn't the center that botched that second play.
01:18It was Bates.
01:19No, it was Bates on the first play.
01:21Bates botched the second play, too.
01:22No, I'm talking about on the sack.
01:24Yeah, that was the first play.
01:25No, the sack was the second play.
01:27Okay, well, I'm confused.
01:28There was an incompletion on the first play.
01:29The first play was Jaden just gets rid of the ball.
01:31The second play was the sack.
01:32Okay, I got it reversed.
01:33I got it reversed.
01:34So it wasn't the center because they were all moving left.
01:37He had his guy, but Bates missed the tackle.
01:39No, no, I just reversed the two plays.
01:41Yeah.
01:41Forgive me.
01:43There are guys, though, that, again, under the first team defense, you know, I thought
01:49market improvements.
01:50So, you know, it's not all terrible.
01:52And then, you know, other guys, you had the five defensive guys that had sacks, you know,
01:56Hurst, Jean-Baptiste, Amik Robertson.
01:59And, of course, he flashed even the, I'm not even going to try to say the name of the guy
02:04who's, like, their international player.
02:06I actually thought he looked legit on that play.
02:09TJ Mugganranga or whatever.
02:10I mean, who knows what his future is.
02:12But I thought he looked pretty good there.
02:14Everybody's talking about the Jaden Bradley catch.
02:17Antonio Williams continues to flash a little bit.
02:20He had two catches for 41 yards.
02:23Josh Josephs, while he did have the play where he over-pursued on the run and he got burned
02:27for it on the touchdown, he generated that early pressure that led to Amik's strip sack.
02:34And then, of course, he recovered the fumble.
02:36So it was up and down day for Josh.
02:38But he's flashing.
02:39I think that's good.
02:40Robert Henry Jr. came crashing back to earth after his fumble.
02:43That's sort of on the downside.
02:45The running game, just 35 yards on 17 carries.
02:492.1 yards per attempt, as Cakes mentioned.
02:53Robert Henry Jr., he was kind of like, what is the, I don't know.
02:58Everybody loved what he did in week one, week two.
03:01Just not as good.
03:03He had a late kickoff fumble.
03:05Catron, even though he only had 30 yards on 10 carries, some people thought, you know,
03:10fairly impressive getting what he could.
03:12Show a little wiggle.
03:14Hartman had some moments, you know, where he, you know, he looked like maybe a varsity
03:18high school quarterback.
03:21There were some other moments where he looked like a JV quarterback.
03:25Kelly Comanis is not a star, but you know what?
03:28He looks the part.
03:30He's very Cousins-like.
03:33Like, he's not super athletic.
03:34I mean, relatively speaking.
03:35These guys are all great athletes.
03:36But relatively speaking, relative to the competition, relative to other elite quarterbacks, he's
03:41not going to really move.
03:42But he's got good footwork.
03:43He's got a big, strong arm.
03:46He was 11 of 14.
03:47I think he's impressed everyone.
03:49He's got a stranglehold on the number three job.
03:51Like, he's pulled so far ahead of Sam Hartman.
03:54And if Mariota's not ready for the first week, he's going to be the number two.
03:57Right.
03:58Yeah.
03:58He really is raising some eyebrows.
04:01So, I think a good job so far there, Adam Peters, on that project that they've selected.
04:07It was just an ugly game because there was just no offense from either team.
04:11There was barely any yardage.
04:13It was just, it was kind of ugly to watch.
04:16Have you mentioned Sonny Stiles because on Friday, when we did the show and we were talking
04:22about what we wanted to see, one of the things that I said was, I want to see at least
04:28one
04:28Sonny Stiles splash play.
04:31You want to see him flash.
04:31Yeah.
04:31You want to see him pop a little bit because he's your first round pick.
04:34And I don't know.
04:35Maybe I missed it.
04:36I didn't see it.
04:36He didn't give you anything.
04:37No.
04:38But he wasn't out there very long.
04:41The only thing I'm going to say.
04:42He was out there in the first series where they caused the fumble.
04:45Okay.
04:46So, that wasn't a long drive.
04:48In the second series, that's when Dobbs scored.
04:52But, and then he was pulled.
04:54So, I mean, he just went out there.
04:55He's been out there for maybe a total of 30 plays or so.
04:57Probably two games.
04:58You tell me when Ale Cahoe leads the team in tackles during the regular season over Sonny
05:04Stiles.
05:04I mean, that just shows you in a nutshell what the preseason is.
05:07Can I make a bet with you?
05:08Sure.
05:09You take Sonny Stiles to lead the team in tackles.
05:11Okay.
05:12You're insinuating to not take the field.
05:13Ooh, I can't do that.
05:15Why not?
05:16I mean, I'm just...
05:17Bobby Wagner did it every year.
05:18I'm just not...
05:18I'm not into giving you field bets at this point.
05:21I need to see a few weeks.
05:23Sonny Stiles, I'm assuming, is going to be a great player.
05:26He's got everything you want.
05:27He's a spectacular kid.
05:29God-fearing kid.
05:30Like, everything about the kid is just you root for him.
05:32I do think that it's pretty obvious that he's learning, right?
05:38Beyond just any rookie learning, I still think he's growing into the position
05:41of playing linebacker.
05:42I used the word project when he was drafted and people attacked me.
05:47He's learning.
05:48He's got a lot to learn.
05:49He's the target of a couple of social media accounts, including our guy,
05:53first-round mock.
05:53A lot of people are attacking Sonny Stiles.
05:55And I watched one of the kind of all-22s where they broke down every one of his plays.
06:01It hasn't been flattering the first two games.
06:05Now, what I don't know is when he's going into a gap and he's taking on a tackler,
06:09is that where he's supposed to be?
06:11He's not making enough plays to notice it as just an average fan.
06:16Put it this way.
06:17Josh Joseph is flashing more than Sonny so far.
06:21But, again, Sonny's a freak athlete.
06:24Comes from good stock.
06:25Great person.
06:26Great college.
06:27Everything's in his favor.
06:28You assume he'll figure it out.
06:30And I would probably bet on that.
06:32It's not about the preseason, but I'm curious if people are starting to worry about his play.
06:361-800-636-1067.
06:39It'll be 50-50.
06:41Half the fans will be worried that he hasn't made any plays.
06:44I think most fans will still be.
06:45He's been out there for 20 seconds.
06:46You don't want to be the first one.
06:48It's more than 20 seconds, Jason.
06:49It's been three series total.
06:52Okay.
06:52Three.
06:53Yeah.
06:53In two games.
06:54You don't want to just be out there attacking him when he's barely played.
06:58Right.
06:58So you're probably not going to have too many people say that they're worried.
07:01But you might have a drop-off this year from what Bobby Wagner was giving you consistently
07:07to what Sonny may give you this year.
07:09He may be a superstar in two years.
07:10J.P., Bobby Wagner is going to the Hall of Fame.
07:12I know, but people were so quick to bail on him.
07:15That's unfair to compare him to Bobby Wagner right now.
07:18That Sonny Stiles isn't going to be a liability in coverage like Bobby Wagner was at the end
07:23of his career.
07:24I don't know how you can quantify that.
07:26I think he looks pretty smooth there in coverage.
07:28He's very good in coverage.
07:29He's pretty smooth.
07:30Which is part of the reason he went number seven overall.
07:3217 plays.
07:34I think it's been 17 plays.
07:36I think it's been more than that.
07:38Oh.
07:38I don't think so.
07:38I also, he hasn't recorded a tackle, has he?
07:41Yeah, he had one in this game.
07:43He's had like assists.
07:45I think he had one in this.
07:46He had one listed tackle in the Lions game.
07:49But see, if he had botched the play that Josh Josephs did, right?
07:54He would be getting killed.
07:57Destroyed.
07:58Destroyed.
07:59I totally agree.
08:00But no one's saying anything about Josephs.
08:02No, people noticed it.
08:02No, Josephs is not the first round pick.
08:03People noticed it.
08:04People noticed that Josh Josephs botched it.
08:07But Josh Josephs also had a fumble recovery.
08:09Josh Josephs also has pressure.
08:11You know, Josh Josephs has flashed more.
08:13That's bottom line.
08:14But that's fine.
08:15I think he'll be fine.
08:17He's got all the pedigree.
08:18I would agree with you.
08:19He hasn't given you anything, but he's only been out there for 20 plays.
08:22He's going to need a big week one from Sonny Stiles.
08:24I mean, he's going to be out there for an entire game in week one.
08:26Put it this way.
08:27He's still in the learning curve phase very much.
08:29For sure.
08:30And then once he's going against starters and other opposing coaches are kind of gearing
08:34to his negative plays, I just think it's just way too early to kill him after 17 to
08:4220 plays in the preseason.
08:44I think that's right.
08:45But I understand that that faction is out there.
08:48Well, it's going to happen with anybody that's your first round pick.
08:50Yes.
08:51Anybody, any top 10 pick, any position, the eyeballs are going to be on you.
08:55No matter what position.
08:56The poll of the day is whether you're still optimistic or are you worried, two choices
09:02about the commanders right now after two preseason games.
09:06And one of the responses was worried about Sonny Stiles.
09:09I think it's fair.
09:10Too early to worry about Sonny Stiles.
09:12You have zero worry.
09:13If you're a month in.
09:14You have zero worry.
09:16Very little worry.
09:17Okay, little worry is different than zero.
09:18I would be worried more, much more about the center position than Sonny Stiles.
09:23Oh, that is very concerning.
09:24I think, yeah.
09:25I think they'll figure that out.
09:26I mean, first of all, you're relying on a guy in Allegretti who I believe has four starts
09:30at center in his career prior to this year.
09:32Now, he's got other starts in the interior line at guard, but doesn't have a ton of experience
09:38at center.
09:38He got rid of Biotis, who, by the way, side note on him, terrible story.
09:42He's done for the year.
09:43Done for the year.
09:44Season-ending IR from his injury for the Chargers.
09:47That sucks.
09:49Yeah.
09:49There's concern about the interior of the commander's offensive line.
09:53Let's go to Mo in Largo.
09:56Mo, what's up, buddy?
09:58Are you worried?
09:59Good morning, gentlemen.
10:00Thank you for taking my call.
10:02Absolutely.
10:03Absolutely.
10:04I mean, the shortest distance for the quarterback is through the center, and our starter is hurt,
10:10and the backup has no experience.
10:13We lost our left tackle.
10:15I mean, our inadequacy right now is a tremendous liability because he jeopardizes our most valuable
10:23asset.
10:24So, yeah, I'm worried, man.
10:27I mean, I like the defense and everything.
10:29You know, I see some talent emerging around the offense, but without the offensive line,
10:35I don't know how anything gets started.
10:38And not to mention, we're lacking the personnel and continuity.
10:42So, just to assume that the weapons will be able to make the most of their abilities
10:47is kind of a false, you know, optimism because if the line can't block, there's no time for
10:54the play to develop, and we just get Jaden scrambling around again.
10:59And so, I'm going to remain worried because usually when I'm overly confident, we come
11:05out looking like trash.
11:06So, yeah, I'll just be worried, and hopefully things will become positive.
11:11Thank you, gentlemen.
11:12Well, it also really sucks that as they're trying to figure out, and I do think all teams
11:16have weaknesses.
11:17They have to scheme around whatever they are.
11:18No team's perfect.
11:20So, this is our weakness.
11:22It's going to take a while to figure it out, probably.
11:24Well, it doesn't help that the first three games are brutal.
11:27It does not help.
11:28And think about it.
11:29The defensive tackles for Philly are studs.
11:32Yeah, they are monsters.
11:33And if they're going to go against a banged-up Allegretti or a backup center, that's going
11:37to get ugly real quick.
11:39That could get really ugly.
11:40The only thing you can hope for is maybe just Philly is a disaster offensively, just kind
11:44of falling apart, you know.
11:45Yeah, I mean.
11:46It hurts on another OC.
11:48He may be shook a little bit.
11:50He doesn't have agent.
11:51Who knows?
11:53Stephon Diggs, you better be ready for some quick passes from Jake Daniels week one.
11:57Side note, if you want to call in and give us what you're worried about, or maybe even
12:02things that you're taking positives out of the second game.
12:05I thought defensively, it was a big jump, and that was a point of emphasis, so that's
12:09good.
12:10And I do think defensively, they're going to be pretty darn good.
12:12If they can figure out the offensive line, I think we're going to be pretty good offensively,
12:16too.
12:16Hey, Drew Stevens was two for two.
12:18That's right.
12:18Well, his long was 32, I think.
12:21I get it.
12:21It's already made him.
12:22But he was two for two.
12:24You take pauses where you can get them.
12:25You've got to trust that they see something in him, and his personality or whatever, that
12:29he'll be able to handle it.
12:30Tress played.
12:32Tress played.
12:32Yeah.
12:33That's good.
12:33Tress had what, four or five punts?
12:35Four punts.
12:36So while people call in, you can give us what your worries or your concerns and what your
12:40positives are.
12:41There was a side note, and that was just unfairly so.
12:46So our guy, JP Finley, was kind of attacked by some Skins fans, diehards, you know, the
12:52HGTC crowd where you can say nothing negative or you can do nothing that doesn't just tow
12:57the company line.
12:58They were upset that JP did his job and just asked, hey, give him a chance to comment publicly
13:03on the LSU thing.
13:05And people just murdered him.
13:08Oh, yeah.
13:09How is everything going with kind of the fallout with LSU?
13:13Man, I mean, like you said, I posted that, you know, the statement is out, but for me
13:17now, it's really just focused on commander football.
13:20I said everything I had to say within the statement, and now it's really just getting
13:24ready for week one.
13:25And where do you think you guys are?
13:26Look, they both handle that the exact way they should have handled it.
13:30JP has to ask him the question because he has that forum and that platform.
13:34So he asked it, and Jaden deflected it and said, look, I'm focused on playing commander's
13:40football.
13:40I think he could have handled it better.
13:42Who, Jaden?
13:42Yes.
13:43He sidestepped it.
13:44He deflected.
13:45Well, what's wrong with that?
13:46He said nothing wrong with it, but I think he could have been forthright.
13:49Well, it's forthright.
13:50And said, you know, just say, look, I haven't had a chance to talk about it.
13:52He could expand it.
13:53But why would he?
13:54That only opens up the can of worms in.
13:55Just saying.
13:56That just makes it worse.
13:57That's short-sighted thinking on your part.
13:58It'll be a bigger story.
13:59The way he handled it gets rid of it.
14:00Not hiring JP is my PR guy.
14:01I agree with you, JP.
14:03There's the public perception nationally he had a chance to think of it.
14:07Yes.
14:07Yeah, but why?
14:10I'm not giving it any more oxygen.
14:11I just think he could have handled it differently.
14:14But JP was, he did his show with Mitch Tischler after the Lions game.
14:19Yeah.
14:19And JP was upset that.
14:23People were killing him.
14:24Yeah, they were killing him for doing his job.
14:26And he kind of unleashed.
14:28It made me happy.
14:29I wasn't going to even bring this up.
14:31Burger Manners just said, JP Finley just asked Jaden about LSU.
14:34I hate our media.
14:35Well, Burger Manners, here's what you don't know about how journalism actually works.
14:42Jaden, after everything has happened, hasn't spoken to the media, hasn't addressed the media.
14:47This is a national story.
14:48Somebody has to ask him the question.
14:50I was the person here probably with the balls to do so.
14:53So that's why I did it.
14:54And I'm not going to name names, but reporters all over the country and most of the D.C. media
15:01that didn't travel here asked me to ask it.
15:05And Jaden, when he left, dapped me up and said, I know you got to do your job.
15:09So don't speak on what you don't know about.
15:14I mean.
15:15And it was an opportunity for Jaden to say whatever he wanted.
15:18Right.
15:18That's what I was going to say.
15:19I knew he was going to refer to the statement that went exactly how I expected it to.
15:23His focus has been on the commanders.
15:25I don't think he had a whole lot to do with all this LSU nonsense.
15:28And I think all the people piling on on social media are lame.
15:31But like, that's the job, dude.
15:34There's a reason I'm on this field in Detroit and you're not, Burger Manners.
15:38That's a great way to end.
15:39Getting a little fired up here at the end of the preseason game.
15:42I like it.
15:42Hmm.
15:42Burger Manners.
15:43That's the perfect way to end it, J.P.
15:46I thought J.P. did his job.
15:48I did think Jaden had an opportunity to just be a little forthright versus just deflecting it.
15:54What do you mean be forthright?
15:55Just say, look, this is the deal.
15:58Why?
15:58He could almost outline it.
16:00Why?
16:01All that does is open up the can of worms even more.
16:04Potentially.
16:05Like it's already died down.
16:06Some people who've already decided that he is public enemy number one in LSU.
16:12That's fine.
16:12He might win them back.
16:14He doesn't need to.
16:15He doesn't care.
16:15That's fine.
16:15I think he should just forget about it.
16:17Exactly.
16:17He handled it in my opinion.
16:18Go out and worry about your center.
16:19Perfectly.
16:19The worst thing to do is reopen that can of worms.
16:22That would have been the worst thing he could have done.
16:23I don't agree.
16:24I don't agree.
16:25Well, he had to, I mean, he sidestepped it for an entire week.
16:29Yeah.
16:29He could have just said, he could have just said, hey.
16:32You're allowed to sidestep things.
16:33I don't have to comment on anything.
16:35He could have said, look, my focus is on the commanders.
16:37But I want to fill you in that I had to sit down with Brian Kelly after I finished playing
16:43at LSU.
16:43I loved my time at LSU on the Heisman.
16:45And Brian Kelly told me that I was going to retire the number.
16:49Then so-and-so talked to me about it.
16:51And my feelings were a little hurt when they moved on.
16:55And it's too much.
16:56It's way too much.
16:57It would have been the top story on ESPN.com.
17:01It was a 48-hour, 72-hour news story.
17:04It should have been about a one-hour one.
17:05But because nothing was going on.
17:07And now it's dead?
17:08No, no, no, no.
17:10It's not dead because it's already under his resume.
17:16Nationally, when you hear Jay Daniels.
17:18Permanent ink on his resume.
17:19Yes.
17:20It'll never go away, though.
17:21It'll be in his Wikipedia forever.
17:22There's nothing he could say to make that go away.
17:25No, he could have said something.
17:27It could have made LSU look worse in the situation.
17:30That wouldn't help him.
17:31But that wouldn't help him.
17:32It just makes him seem petty.
17:33He handled it.
17:35Listen, I'm telling you, he handled it perfectly.
17:41LSU basically spoke on this more so and better than Jayden did.
17:45And Jayden had the opportunity to-
17:48He can let them have that PR win.
17:51LSU gets the PR win.
17:52I agree.
17:53That's fine.
17:53Let them have it.
17:54But he doesn't care.
17:55And I believe him.
17:56His focus is on football right now.
17:59And you don't need to open that can of worms again.
18:02Coming up next, John Keim on the Commander's second preseason game.
