00:01yes, football people, this is the point.
00:06We've done it.
00:08Why be alive at all if not for football?
00:11You know what I'm saying, Danny?
00:12Yeah, I mean, I like some other stuff too in general,
00:14but this is pretty good.
00:15But not that much.
00:16Yeah, right.
00:17This is better than all that other stuff.
00:19It's a preamble.
00:19The season is here.
00:20There's a game tonight.
00:22The Commanders play Sunday at 425.
00:24I have a friend.
00:26His name's Buddy, this guy.
00:28Uh-huh.
00:28He is the audacity.
00:30The nerve yesterday to say to me,
00:31we play at 1 or 425.
00:33I said 425.
00:34And he said to me, this real quote,
00:36you mean I got to sit around for three more hours and wait?
00:38I hate a 425 game.
00:41Let me tell you something, buddy.
00:42Let me tell everyone out there something.
00:44On week one, the non-1 o'clock game is exactly what you want.
00:50Sunday night football, perfect.
00:52Monday night football, better.
00:551 o'clock to kick off the season just means I don't get to see
00:59the little 10-second, 5-second, 2-second countdown clock on Red Zone.
01:03I don't get to watch the Bears and the Panthers and the Bucs
01:06at the Bengals and the Saints at the Lions.
01:08Don't you want to watch all that football and feel it again
01:10and see the 10 games kick off?
01:12Yeah, but I see where Buddy's coming from on this one.
01:15Again, if I was sure that my house was in order,
01:17I'd invite some company.
01:19See what I'm saying?
01:20I don't know.
01:21I'm hopeful.
01:21Maybe.
01:22Maybe I don't want all of America to stop and say,
01:24let's turn on Fox and see what's good.
01:26And just in case it's bad.
01:28I'm not that confident.
01:29A lot of you are, and that's good for you.
01:30I wish I had your confidence.
01:31I also wish I knew who was doing that drilling.
01:34That's really, really right in our ears.
01:35But also, if it was up to me until further notice,
01:401 o'clock, closed-circuit television, as few viewers as possible,
01:43until I was sure we were good, then everybody can see.
01:47I actually think.
01:48We were about to do a segment on the games this weekend
01:52and run through a bunch of them and play some clips.
01:55I want to push that for a second.
01:56I think I've stumbled into something here.
01:58Is Buddy right?
02:00What is the right time for the Commanders to kick off their season?
02:04I actually think 425 is probably third best behind Monday Night Football is one
02:10and Sunday Night Football is two.
02:11But I know I'm in the minority because nobody wants to wait
02:14until the Monday Night game for your season opener.
02:17But I want to be able to watch ball all day long
02:20and not really have to worry about the Commanders until the next day.
02:23I'll just push it.
02:24I love standalone games for that reason, as you know.
02:26I like football.
02:27I want to watch football.
02:29What do football watchers do?
02:31Football watchers?
02:31Hello?
02:32We watch football.
02:33They watch football.
02:34Hey, guys, what do football watchers do?
02:35They watch football.
02:36Hey, Grant Danny, what do football watchers do?
02:38They watch football, Coach.
02:38Coach Edwards, they watch football.
02:40They watch football.
02:41You got to watch football, Grant.
02:42You're a football watcher.
02:44That's my her memory.
02:44That's the answer.
02:45It's not bad.
02:45That's pretty good.
02:47425 is the right play.
02:50Danny, you're drawing it up.
02:52You're making the schedule.
02:53Commanders, season opener.
02:55They play at?
02:551 p.m.
02:58I don't love that.
02:58Now, when I was a child, Kang, you don't know this era.
03:02Darius doesn't know it.
03:03Tobit doesn't know it.
03:04And Strober sure as hell doesn't know it.
03:05He's heard myth.
03:06He's heard tell.
03:07Passed down upon generation.
03:08He sounds like some Greek that's heard about Leonidas off in the distance.
03:14Yeah, it's like, what?
03:15That didn't happen.
03:16But before he was born, this was a thing.
03:18Trust me.
03:19Matt Damon will be back soon.
03:21He's out there somewhere.
03:23Okay?
03:24He's coming back.
03:25You put that NFC East game alone at 4 o'clock.
03:28You do that.
03:29Because Washington was excellent.
03:31And the team they were playing, that game mattered a lot.
03:32When I was a kid.
03:33Depending on if they're good or will you be embarrassed and all that.
03:36Yes, I am.
03:37I'm talking about just the week one angst.
03:40Take that out of it.
03:40Let's assume they're going to go 17-0.
03:43When do you want them to play?
03:44No, see, because you're taking away the entire exercise from me.
03:47But Buddy's whole point, the reason I bring this up is not that he's worried they're going
03:50to look bad.
03:51He's saying on week one, you just don't want to wait.
03:53You got the jitters.
03:54Let's watch them play as soon as possible.
03:56And so that's what I'm wondering about.
03:58Take the commanders out of it.
03:59When do you want your team to play in the first week of the season?
04:02I think the best situation I would even have taken, Wednesday night, stand-alone season
04:07opener.
04:08If you want to do that, get it out of the way, no problem.
04:10The whole thing to me is, do not, for one second, ruin my three hours between one and
04:16four and not allow me to watch all the other games the first day I'm allowed to watch all
04:20the games.
04:20So the worst day to have it, worst day in time, would be Monday night.
04:24Second worst would be Sunday night.
04:26Third worst would be one of the other weekday weird ones because the schedule's off and now
04:30it's a loss.
04:31Wednesday slash Thursday.
04:32Wednesday in Germany.
04:33You're in like Sri Lanka on a Tuesday.
04:36None of that.
04:37Trinidad, Tobago.
04:38Friday morning in Kazakhstan.
04:41No.
04:42To all of those things.
04:44The fourth worst is 425.
04:46The best and the only good time is one o'clock.
04:49Normal.
04:49I just want normal.
04:50Just be normal.
04:51I'm going to go to the artist formerly known as Dad.
04:53Cap.
04:53You can call him Cap.
04:55You can call him Cap.
04:56Where are you from, sweetie?
04:58Washington, D.C.
04:59Where else would Cap be from?
05:00Where else would Captain America be from?
05:02Words he actually said.
05:04Double gun point while he did it.
05:06Cap.
05:08When do you want the Commanders to open their season?
05:10What's the best time for a week one game?
05:13The best time for a week one game is any time that allows them to be in a standalone time
05:19slot where they're the only game on at that time.
05:22Now 425 isn't ideal because there's another good 425 game on at that time.
05:27Packers-Vikings is going to be on CBS competing with-
05:29You all have no memories.
05:30Me and Cap see the world the same way.
05:32You understand that, right?
05:32You have no memories of the shame and embarrassment of the nation watching.
05:36I waited all summer for football.
05:38As much as I love my Commanders, I also love football.
05:41Football.
05:41I waited all summer long.
05:42Are you a football watcher?
05:42I want to see-
05:43I'm a football watcher, Grant.
05:44What do football watchers do?
05:45We watch football.
05:46Yeah.
05:47And all I want to do at 1 o'clock on Sunday is watch all the other teams-
05:52I want to watch Houston Texans.
05:52That's what he wants.
05:53He's a Houston Texans fan.
05:54That's a whole excuse because he's a Houston Texans fan.
05:56That's going to be a phenomenal game.
05:57It's going to be a great game.
05:58Yeah.
05:59I'd rather watch my team in a standalone time slot in week one so I can watch all the other
06:04games with no interruption.
06:05I want to learn, Cap.
06:07Yes.
06:08Is Tua going to look terrible for the Falcons?
06:10Yes.
06:10Let's find out together in Pittsburgh at 1 o'clock.
06:12What's Aaron Rodgers look like at 56 years old?
06:15He told a story on a podcast that he was about to marry Shaley Woodley.
06:18Then she told him she had to hook up with another guy first, so he didn't want to marry her
06:21anymore.
06:21Wait, what?
06:22Yeah, you didn't hear about that?
06:23No, that's tough.
06:24He basically unloaded the magazine on-
06:28Now, his story, he is the good guy in his story, I will say.
06:32Sure.
06:32He's always the good guy.
06:33Right.
06:34But all the people that have said all the bad things that dated him, like Danica Patrick,
06:37were wrong, and he actually wasn't that bad of a partner.
06:40He acknowledges he was emotionally unavailable because he fell in love several years before that
06:44with a woman who left the country who he's now married to.
06:47And so he does apologize that he wasn't emotionally available.
06:49But Danica Patrick, and he drifted apart, and she's lied about him, apparently.
06:54I don't know what she said about him.
06:55I don't either.
06:55I can't do it.
06:56But the Shaley Woodley thing, where he's like, apparently she said she was depressed, and
06:59he blindsided her and broke up their marriage after they got engaged.
07:02He says that while they were engaged, she told him, before we get married, I have to bleep
07:07this guy.
07:08And that's when he was like, I'm not that excited about this anymore.
07:11Well, that's actually reasonable, isn't it?
07:14For him?
07:14For him.
07:15Yes, very reasonable.
07:16I think if I would be engaged to my now wife, and she said, look, I'm really excited about
07:20this.
07:21I can't wait to marry you, but.
07:22Raspberry Falls is going to be a blast in a couple of months.
07:24Really nice ceremony by the rest of the wedding.
07:25There's just one guy, and if I don't pull off this endeavor, I just don't know how the
07:30rest of my life can go on.
07:31I would say, I'm excited for you.
07:33That's great.
07:35It's been real.
07:35Thanks for knowing you.
07:37But anyway, that was the story he told on a podcast today.
07:40But you're focusing on the wrong thing.
07:41Sorry, sorry.
07:41Right.
07:42Sorry.
07:42Okay.
07:42Football.
07:43I do want to hear more about that.
07:44You're not a football watcher.
07:45You seem to be whatever that other thing is, watcher.
07:47You're more interested in that.
07:48Yeah.
07:49Well, I care a great deal about the fantasy elements and Red Zone being able to watch that.
07:54Right.
07:54But my point is, the thing that trumps everything by so much is the fear and shame and embarrassment
08:01that you guys are sprinting towards.
08:04You're just jogging right into the middle, and people are going to shoot you sniper style
08:07with shame and embarrassment of your team being on Natty TV going right in the bed.
08:11But we got a quarterback now, Danny.
08:13We shouldn't have to worry about that shame anymore.
08:15We shouldn't, but we did.
08:165-12.
08:17One.
08:17They won a meaningless game by going to get Josh Johnson to get to five.
08:20He wasn't there.
08:21To get to five wins.
08:22He was playing against the Packers, and they got annihilated on national TV.
08:25There was that.
08:25He was playing against the Seahawks, and they got eviscerated on national TV.
08:28I want more standalone games.
08:30Why are you hitting me?
08:31Stop hitting me.
08:32One o'clock, I'm going to find out about Joe Burrow.
08:36Chalking it to Jamar Chase and T. Higgins.
08:39Watch my fantasy roster.
08:40You know what's going to be a good game?
08:42Lions hosting the Saints?
08:43I'm very into that game.
08:44Let's go.
08:45Great.
08:46You watched quarterback this summer.
08:47Quarterback.
08:48Don't you want to know what Cam Ward looks like in his second season?
08:51I'm excited for that.
08:51You'll get to see that at one o'clock.
08:52The Robert Sala rematch?
08:55The Robert Sala revenge game means something to me.
08:58I'm a little bit bummed that I can't watch Kirko against the Miami Dolphins
09:02or Justin Herbert shred the Cardinals.
09:04You think I want to miss Packers, Vikings, the Kyler Murray era beginning in Minneapolis,
09:09one of the great stadiums we have in this country?
09:11But I've got to.
09:12Luckily, I'm only going to miss three games while locking in on the Commanders.
09:17Toby, you don't always see the world like me and Cap see the world.
09:20You've got a different way of seeing the world, Hokey.
09:24When do you want the Commanders to play in week one?
09:26One o'clock.
09:27Because I'm going to be sitting there watching this game, these games at one o'clock,
09:31thinking, can Nick Allegretti block anybody?
09:33Is Mikey Sammer still going to get cooked like he did all of camp?
09:36What is this going to look like instead of being able to enjoy football?
09:40Instead, even if Washington gets waxed at one o'clock, I'll turn on the 425 game.
09:45I'll be disappointed, but I'm at least like, oh, I wish they could have blocked.
09:49I wish they could have covered.
09:50I wish they could have done this.
09:51But I'm at least watching the game, and then by Sunday night football, I've recovered.
09:54Instead, in this, the one o'clock games I don't enjoy because I'm thinking about the four o'clock game.
09:58I get to watch the four o'clock game.
10:00Hopefully, they roll, and then I get to enjoy Sunday night football.
10:03But if they get waxed, I sit there thinking all night, watching Sunday night football, thinking, gosh, we suck.
10:09So you're nervous.
10:10There's an anxiety to it that kind of ruins everything before it.
10:13I'm not as worried about the Danny.
10:14I do get Danny's side of things, but I don't really care what the national, like, everybody joining.
10:19I could not care less what they think about us.
10:22But I'm going to be sitting there thinking about Washington all day.
10:25So let's get this over with, and then we'll worry about everything afterwards.
10:28I, frankly, at one o'clock, could not care less what Tyler Shuck looks like.
10:32But if we was playing at 425 after the Commanders game, I'll be interested.
10:35Danny, I'm sure when you do a big stand-up show, you're not, like, eating a big meal or anything
10:39kind of nervous.
10:40You can't really, right?
10:41No, you've got to use your nervous energy.
10:43You know you're nervous just because it matters to you.
10:45I always laugh that there's these gigantic spreads of the best sandwiches and food you'll ever get at the Ed
10:50Sullivan Theater at the Letterman Show.
10:52And my family would come, and they'd all eat and get ready for the segment or whatever.
10:56And I would go out there for these segments.
10:57And I would never, everyone's like, what was the food like?
10:59I never touched it one time.
11:01I was always so nervous.
11:02I couldn't.
11:03Like, I was just like, the idea of food is repulsive at this time.
11:08There's no chance, if you're Tobes, I guess, and you're petrified about Nick Allegretti, that you could sit there and
11:13enjoy the 1 o'clock games.
11:14I don't have that problem.
11:15I will worry about the Commanders when they run out of that tunnel with the smoke billowing at Lincoln Financial
11:21Field.
11:21It's the thing that you and Darius don't have.
11:25It's honestly like, now again, I sign up for it, and I'm willing to participate here.
11:30It's like agonizing.
11:32Do you know what I mean?
11:32It's like this, it's this welcome pain, of course, because it's your team and it matters so much to you.
11:37Like, the anxiety, and that's why I can't watch in public with people like, hey, let's do a game watch
11:42for Washington.
11:43No, never.
11:45Privacy of my home so I can scream and pace around and throw things.
11:49It is this mess of a sweaty bucket watching these sporting events.
11:55And I can't imagine going, yep, I'll sign up for everybody to be able to see that.
11:59Speaking of which, Cap, we've got to start planning which game we're going to do in my basement this year
12:03on YouTube again.
12:05That was a smash hit last year.
12:06Danny will say, like, four words.
12:07You won't be sick this time, so maybe you won't be as, like, completely out.
12:11I was so helpless.
12:12But you also didn't have that much fun, I'll say.
12:15It was both.
12:15Strober time.
12:17Strober time.
12:18Strobes.
12:18Strober.
12:19What time do you want the Commanders playing on Sunday?
12:21It's easily 1 o'clock for me.
12:23First of all, this team has stunk in prime time, in any time outside of 1 o'clock.
12:27I was going to say, they also stink at 1 o'clock, by the way.
12:30Yes, but they're especially bad in prime time, in my lifetime.
12:33And also, kind of in the same boat, if they lose, it ruins my whole day.
12:39It literally ruins my life.
12:41And if I find out on Sunday that the season is over week one, like, I know it's going to
12:46be a terrible year,
12:47I need the whole rest of the day to get over it, to process it, to grieve how disappointed I
12:52am that the season is going to be terrible.
12:54Hopefully that doesn't happen, but that's how I think about these things.
12:57Isn't that an argument for the later game, though, because it ruins less of your day?
13:01In other words, if they play at 1, the game ends at 4, you're sulking around until midnight.
13:05If they play at 4, you're talking about 8 to midnight.
13:07If they play a Sunday night football game, you just lay in your bed, sad, going to bed.
13:11You didn't ruin anything else.
13:13No, I have to make it everyone's problem, though.
13:15Okay.
13:15Everyone around you has to know how sad you are.
13:17Yes, you've got to put on a production.
13:18So the reason every Washington or everybody, every national pundit's talking about how terrible Washington is are these national-type
13:26games, right?
13:26So after the Monday Night Massacre, for example, that everybody saw, then the narrative is how inept they are for
13:32a couple years.
13:32So when everybody gets annoyed about all the negative attention from the outside of D.C. looking in, these are
13:38the case in points.
13:39So until you're sure you're ready for it, let's not welcome all the standalone games.
13:43That's my only point.
13:44800-636-1067 is the number.
13:47800-636-1067 is the number if you want to hop in with us on GNN.
