00:50falling apart over well they they just oh i mean florida state fans are very happy about what they
00:55just did uh it's not mike norvell yet but they did fire a different michael michael alford their
01:01athletic director has just been fired this morning but i mean that's it was it was necessary i mean
01:08foot football is king their football program has obviously fallen very far behind uh you know fsu fans
01:15are rejoicing at this and it's interesting for a number of different reasons guys i mean obviously
01:20they fire alford um you know norvell is going to be next at some point like do they want to
01:26get
01:26their next ad in before they fire norvell or just make sure you have your next day ad in before
01:33you
01:33hire your next head coach and also uh miami's ad job is still vacant i think they've made a lot
01:39of
01:39progress quietly behind the scenes so i wonder if florida state is going to look at any of the same
01:46candidates miami might be looking at i think that might be a no and i say that perk because
01:51everything that i hear which is not much about miami's ad search they're doing it very quietly
01:57is that they're looking mostly at non-traditional candidates like people that don't have necessarily
02:04major backgrounds in athletic director jobs like business people so i don't know if florida state is
02:11going to take the same non-conventional approach that miami is taking so i don't know if the candidates
02:16will be the same or not and we may never know because miami is doing it so quietly
02:21florida state may want to try to hire someone who's opposed to filing lawsuits
02:25because that didn't go very well uh over there so anyway let's get back to uh to the dolphins and
02:35chris perkins is here with us and perk we got to see malik willis for the first time playing
02:39a real game yesterday how would you evaluate his performance if you even really can evaluate his
02:47performance i'll start here uh you know i wrote about malik and those bedazzled cleats that he
02:54doesn't tie yeah what are those all about maybe tie those shoes tie the shoes so then i think this
03:01happened to arch manning also i think he doesn't tie his shoes and and it's the shoe fell off during
03:06their game against ohio state but he malik wears these kind of bedazzled cleats he's told us that
03:12he started doing this uh with jordan love when they were in green bay that you know you just get
03:17some shoes and you put kind of the rhinestones on them malik has a guy in atlanta who does it
03:22but he
03:22wears malik wears these cleats that also have the sock in them so uh it keeps the shoe on the
03:28foot and
03:29he said i noticed during training camp and pre-season he doesn't tie his shoes and so um yeah he
03:35said that
03:36they stay on his foot that that there's no reason to tie the shoe it stays on his foot so
03:40it didn't
03:41twice yesterday but malik had an up and down day i think um you know he showed us some decent
03:47stuff
03:47early um with some with some um with the strong right arm and and with the legs when it got
03:53later
03:54for especially the fourth quarter when it was in predictable pass situations he was in a tough spot
03:59that there's there's just really nothing you can do he didn't have a whole lot of help from the
04:03standpoint that hn ends with 11 carries for 36 yards that's not a lot of carries that's not a lot
04:09of yards so that puts malik willis out there on an island so to speak to start with he's got
04:14to deal
04:14with max crosby who had a one and a half sacks um quiddie pay is also coming at him on
04:20the defensive
04:20line for for uh vegas so there were a lot of things that malik had to deal with having said
04:27that
04:27he's got to be better he's just playing flat out got to be better and again this is what a
04:32rebuild
04:32looks like right a first time starter who's a fifth year player uh there's going to be some
04:37hiccups there he even said that he held the ball too long a few times which i would i would
04:42agree with
04:42him on that but um look uh it it wasn't a a disastrous debut it was something that you would
04:50like to see uh you would have liked to have seen him play better but again uh you know this
04:55is his
04:56first time being a full-time starter so you know there's going to be some mistakes made there the
05:02the big deal is going to be next week has he improved on some of those mistakes look he's not
05:08going to look like dan marino next week but um you know maybe he could look like tua did i
05:13just say that
05:14oh no i know it i know it uh sorry dolphins fans maybe he could just improve so um we'll
05:21we'll see
05:21what happens and i think he will make incremental improvements but don't repeat those mistakes get
05:28rid of the ball next week against san francisco instead of holding it for for so long again not
05:34disastrous but some stuff you would like to see better so i'll ask you the same question i asked joe
05:39earlier and maybe you just answered it with incremental improvements because i'm just like
05:44how do you evaluate malik willis this year with what's around him to the point where you know perk
05:51it seems pretty obvious miami's going to have a very high draft pick come april and it looks like
05:56there could be some really good quarterbacks near the top of that draft so what does malik willis need
06:02to show us this year to show john eric sullivan you can use that pick on you know somebody maybe
06:08a
06:08receiver uh because there's a pretty good one uh in columbus ohio or you know a different position
06:15they malik has got to be clean and efficient and he's got to show that he doesn't repeat mistakes
06:22right we know that he doesn't have great receivers we know that he doesn't have great tight ends we know
06:28that the pass protection is shaky so you know all of that kind of stuff puts malik in in in
06:34a kind of
06:35bad situation but don't throw the ball into tight windows don't force the ball make good decisions
06:42between running and passing make good decisions about when to get rid of the ball make good decisions
06:47about when to slide when to get out of bounds things like that don't put your offense in a bad
06:53position
06:53and that's really how i'm gonna judge malik willis it's not necessarily gonna be on the numbers it's gonna
06:59be on did he play smart did he do everything he could to keep the offense in a good situation
07:06that was up and down yesterday but you know and you know what and i'll say this that what we
07:12see
07:12from the dolphins these first few weeks is gonna kind of be like a baseline concussion test right that
07:18that you see where where the team is right now and then you kind of give them that concussion test
07:23around thanksgiving have they improved can they remember what day it is etc etc so that that's kind of
07:29what i'm looking at with malik with cayden proctor with the defense with with all these different
07:34aspects even with jeff hatley um you know are you making improvements as the season goes on that's
07:40what i want to see from malik willis and and dono as far as what it would take for malik
07:46for for the
07:46dolphins not to draft a quarterback in the first three rounds to me if you draft a quarterback in the
07:51first three rounds you think he could be a future starter four through sevens is probably a backup
07:56so for malik not to you know to stave off that round one two or three quarterback um you've also
08:04got to make some of your players better right so put put the ball in advantageous positions on passes
08:11for caleb douglas and greg dosage where they can use their talents to make that catch where douglas can
08:17show us his uh you know his length and chris bell can show us his toughness on third down or
08:23in the red
08:24zone or stuff like that make the game easier for your teammates you've now said tua and concussion
08:30by the way in this uh segment park i just just want to know he's sending subliminal messages is
08:34what he's doing who was rolling around on the ground at practice who couldn't suit up on uh on sunday
08:40by the way yeah yeah that was uh yeah let's not revisit that my bad my bad let's just like
08:46that
08:46from the record y'all park here's the problem though right the raiders are a team that had the
08:52number one pick they're not a very good overall roster from top to bottom the schedule gets very
08:58very difficult here for the dolphins like they're going to play the 49ers who just beat the ramps and
09:04look good doing it yeah oh that's the that to me is the problem right like it's not like it's
09:09you
09:09know it's not like the raiders are real good oh it's going to get easier we'll have some opportunities
09:13the schedule is really really tough here for miami it is and then look i just mentioned jeff
09:20halfley part of his deal is going to be keeping this young team focused right don't let them get
09:25down because you probably are in for a loss next week maybe even a bludgeoning um and then the week
09:31after that i know i'm using some bad words here right wow yeah i know uh and then you know
09:38after
09:39that patrick mahomes comes into town right and so you have to just be be able to kind of take
09:46take
09:46some things every week so maybe next week it's physicality you want to see that improve maybe the
09:52week after that it's the penalties you want to see that improve maybe after that uh i think brian
09:57flores brings that defense in maybe it's special teams after that but pick something every week that
10:02you're going to make an improvement and you're going to build on that aspect and you just keep
10:07stacking these improvements and and maybe you know by the second half of the season you're a
10:12a much better team but i can't tell you much more than that sorry by the way vegas is predicting
