01:02We begin with the news.
01:18We have been following the 18th BRICS Leaders Summit that is currently underway in New Delhi,
01:23India.
01:24On Saturday, the member states adopted the New Delhi Decoration, the first day of sessions
01:30of the leaders' meeting, that leaders are also addressing global issues of global interest
01:36and expand their cooperation partnerships.

01:47Hello, good evening from here, from New Delhi, capital of India, where the BRICS Summit state
01:55has started today on this Saturday, the meeting of the heads of state or head of government
02:00of the members of the Alliance, who both in their speeches as in their final declaration,
02:09and also later on practically challenged the existing order, the idea of unipolarism and
02:20unilateralism.
02:21In the words of the Prime Minister of India, Rendaram Modi, who opened the session of their meeting
02:29at 2.30 in the afternoon, local time, he said that the world's political system is like a pyramid
02:39with a few on the top taking the decisions and below all the others obeying them, and this had to
02:47change.
02:47Modi said the global south had to change from those who follow the rules to those who shape the rule.
02:59And in concretely, he and the start declaration demanded an immediate reform to the UN, starting
03:08with the UN Security Council, with a major representative of the Global South in that organ, as well as
03:16in the General Assembly and in UN-related organizations as well.
03:22But they didn't stop there.
03:23The final declaration also demanded a better representation of the Global South in other
03:31international institutions, such as the IMF and the World Bank, arguing that the Global
03:38South's economic weight in the global economy had grown and needed better representation there.
03:45IMF quotas were on the agenda of the final declaration agreed upon by the members of the BRICS Alliance.
03:53And they also criticized other issues, very common in this unilateral thought, such as sanctions
04:03and threats and tariffs.
04:05These were rejected by a number of presidents speaking in the reunion of the the presidents
04:13of the BRICS Alliance, among them the Russian President Vladimir Putin, and of course the Iranian
04:18President Masoud Pazeshki and both countries targeted fiercely by mainly U.S. sanctions.
04:26But also other leaders, such as Xi Jinping, criticized the imposition of production and, pardon, excuse
04:35me, protectionism and the imposition of tariff barriers on the global trade, which were rejected
04:44also in the final declaration.
04:46The BRICS Alliance instead proposed in the final declaration, opening up the economy, opening up and
04:56strengthening multilateral institutions and removing trade barriers also between the BRICS countries, but also
05:04on the global scale.
05:06That was a clear demand.
05:08A critical issue was how the alliance was going to position itself regarding the U.S. attack against Iran,
05:15because Iran is a BRICS member, but so are Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in that conflict, more,
05:24let's say,
05:26tending towards the American side with their territory being used by American, U.S. American forces to attack Iran.
05:34So that was a crucial, difficult issue for the BRICS to resolve.
05:40Their compromise was to address the issue without naming it, address the aggression without naming it.

05:55They called to refrain from escalating the war.
05:58They called to refrain from attacking nuclear facilities as the U.S. and Israel had done in Iran.

06:15Instead, they called to return to diplomacy.
06:18And here they took an active position.
06:22What happened here on the summit was a meeting, a big bilateral meeting between the Iranian president,
06:28and Mesut Pezheşkian, and his counterpart from the United Arab Emirates, the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed.
06:38So two opposing parts met here on the summit and had a talk together bilaterally organized by the Indian presidency
06:47with possible support from the rest of the BRICS members.
06:51Among them are not only China, but also Egypt and, as I mentioned, Saudi Arabia.
06:56Some here say that BRICS will take a bigger initiative in resolving that dispute around the summit of Hormuz.
07:04That's an argument that is presented here.
07:07And that's also an announcement that was made by no one less than the president of the People's Republic of
07:14China, Xi Jinping,
07:15who said that BRICS countries will take more initiative in achieving peace and stability in West Asia.
07:24After that, bin Zayed left New Delhi to return to the United Arab Emirates.
07:32But this is a noteworthy meeting that occurred here, where the BRICS alliance,

07:42has taken a concrete step in mediating a reunion between these two countries.

09:36Eduardo, this BRICS Leaders Summit is taking place in a context of geopolitical turbulence,
09:42we can say.
09:42So, how important is the...
09:45What does it represent the growing strength of the BRICS
09:48in terms of the distribution of power in the world right now?
09:52Well, I would say that, first of all,
09:55maintaining the BRICS unity is itself very politically significant.
10:00We know that one of the major outcomes of this summit
10:06is that the BRICS countries managed to reach an unanimous declaration,
10:10the New Delhi Declaration.
10:11This is very significant because we know that they managed to reach this declaration
10:17despite the very significant political differences among them.
10:21We know that the BRICS are not a military alliance,
10:26it's not an ideological bloc against the Western world.
10:30And we know that a lot of the countries in the BRICS
10:35have very different foreign policies
10:37and sometimes even contradictory interests.
10:40So, in a certain way,
10:43managing to have a declaration,
10:45managing to maintain unity,
10:48is itself a very significant message.
10:51We know that the axis of this declaration
10:54are built around sovereignty,
10:58around the opposition of the unilateral coercion,
11:03like financial coercion, economic coercion,
11:08which is one of the main axis of war tensions today.
11:13There was also a very important message
11:16around the need of reforming global governance
11:19in the UN, in the EMF,
11:21in very different international institutions,
11:25having this argument that today,
11:28the weight of Global South,
11:30it could be in terms of population,
11:34in terms of economic growth,
11:36in terms of trade,
11:38is much bigger than it was decades ago.
11:41So, the global governance needs to reflect that change.
11:45There were many issues that were treated,
11:48and I would say that
11:50mainly one of the biggest and the most important ones
11:54was this challenging of the unilateral power
11:58of economic coercion.
11:59We can have a lot of interpretations also
12:03of how this was framed in the context
12:05of the Iranian war against U.S. and Israel,
12:12where this unilateral economic coercion
12:14has been deployed in a very concerning way.
12:19But this is not only against Iran.
12:21We have seen this against Russia.
12:23We have seen this in this moment.
12:25We are seeing a very critical dynamic
12:28around this unilateral economic coercion
12:30against Cuba,
12:31which is provoking a huge humanitarian crisis.
12:35So, in a certain way,
12:36this summit of the BRICS countries
12:40has been pushing towards,
12:43more and more,
12:44the framing of a multilateral world,
12:47which is not a union against the Western world.
12:51It is a union that is positioning
12:54the need of international law,
12:56is positioning the need of
12:58not allowing that one country
13:01or very few countries in the Western world
13:04could have this power
13:06to violate international law
13:08and try to impose their will
13:10upon other countries.
13:13Eduardo, as you were saying,
13:15one of the key elements
13:16is that BRICS continues to maintain its unity.
13:18And we see this because
13:19when you see the members of BRICS,
13:21there are different political positions,
13:24different interests,
13:24different cultures even.
13:26So, how has BRICS managed to achieve this
13:28to maintain the unity of the bloc
13:30and also how it will represent
13:32going forward to this new international model
13:35that is trying to be built?
13:38Well, I do believe that
13:40even if there are many confrontations
13:42and different ideological
13:44and political differences
13:46inside BRICS,
13:47what is uniting this organization right now,
13:52this alliance,
13:52is the fact that
13:54all of the members know
13:55that a world
13:58which is being ruled
14:00by just a few Western countries,
14:03a world where countries
14:06like the United States
14:07because of the
14:10hegemonic power of the dollar
14:12or because of
14:13its willing to impose
14:15their interest
14:18to other countries
14:19by weapons,
14:21by the war,
14:22is not a world
14:23that is benefiting
14:25any of the BRICS countries.
14:28We know that
14:28is not in the benefit
14:29of any of those countries
14:31even if they could have
14:32some contradictory interests
14:35interests between them,
14:37having a unique
14:39world-ruling
14:41hyper-concentrated power
14:44in the United States
14:46with very few
14:48Western allies
14:49is not something
14:50that can be
14:51positive for the country
14:53and for the people
14:55of those countries.
14:56So even if there's
14:57this big difference,
14:58we can say that
15:00there are two things.
15:02The first is the fact that
15:03this multilateral world
15:06is emerging
15:07not only because of
15:09political willingness
15:10of some presidents
15:12or some governments
15:13that have started
15:15to build alliances.
15:17In fact,
15:18there is a material reality,
15:20an economic reality
15:21behind that,
15:22and this reality
15:23is the fact
15:24that many of the
15:25production
15:26of the Western world
15:28has already been
15:29delocalized
15:30to other continents.
