00:00The 18th BRICS Leader Summit kicked up in New Delhi, the capital of India, this
00:05Saturday with the participation of several world leaders to address issues
00:09of global interests and expand their cooperation partnerships. Our special
00:15envoy in India, Yunus On Air, has more details of everything that has taken
00:20place in this first day of debates. Welcome Yunus to From the South.
00:27Hello to our audience there in Latin America and all over the world. Greetings from
00:36New Delhi, where the BRICS Summit is continuing on its first official date. The previous
00:42dates had unofficial or side events, but today was the day when the heads of state and head
00:48of governments came together. They started their closed session at 2.30 local time in
00:54the afternoon, half an hour of delay because they had a huge program before, and then they
01:00gathered and decided upon the final declaration. More on that later on. The meeting was opened
01:10by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who made an important speech. He demanded reforms
01:17on the UN. He demanded reforms for the UN Security Council. He said that this Global South should
01:26stop being one that follows the rules and should become one that defines them on international
01:31level. He also made proposals for the BRICS organization. He said that he proposed to establish a mechanism
01:41of implementation and continuation of decisions to turn the alliance into a more effective one.
01:50And he proposed to abandon 10 most important trade barriers that existed between BRICS countries. And Narendra Modi
02:00made also an emphasis that BRICS is not an alliance against someone else, but it is an alliance to get
02:09everybody along. Now, this was an important position, which was reflected also by other leaders. For instance,
02:17Chinese President Xi Jinping also emphasized that BRICS is not part of a block confrontation,
02:23but it is a cooperation of South-South mechanism. So this was a tone which was like quite diplomatic
02:32and friendly, especially taking care, not attacking any other country, not attacking or criticizing
02:40harshly any other country. This was a little bit different than the tone that the Russian President
02:47Vladimir Putin has struck in his speech. He criticized harshly if the sanctions regime that was applied
02:54against Russia by the West. And he was followed in this position also by the Iranian President
03:01Masoud Pezheşkian, who was also here or is also on the summit here in New Delhi, who criticized this
03:08sanctions regime that is targeting Iran and proposed that BRICS should establish mechanisms to counter
03:16these sanctions, to counter the devaluation effects that sanctions may have on national currencies and
03:24establish more connections between the countries in terms of trading international currencies. Now, the
03:33eyes were on the final declaration. What would the final declaration of the summit say regarding these
03:41proposals, regarding other conflicts? What would it say regarding the US attack on Iran? Would there be a
03:49final declaration because we know that other international organizations sometimes even fail to produce a
03:56final declaration? Not so the BRICS alliance. BRICS did produce a final declaration, but it is quite
04:04a diplomatic one. And we have to remember that not only Iran is a member of the alliance, but also
04:10the
04:10United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia are a part of the alliance and they take the opposing stance regarding the
04:19U.S. attack on Iran, especially the UAE is quite actively on the American side. So the final declaration says,
04:28to come to the point,
04:30it rejects unilateral interventions and military interventions, but it does so without naming an actor. That was the point it
04:41was expected.
04:42It also says for the war in West Asia, it calls to dialogue and diplomacy and the respect for international
04:52law and it calls to return to the diplomacy to solve problems.
04:57This is the formula that was found to get both Iran and the UAE on board. We hear that there
05:05have been ongoing, long ongoing negotiations between the parties and other BRICS members here on the summit to come to
05:12a consensus.
05:12Of course, the UAE wanted a more harsher criticism on Iran. Iran wanted a clear rejection of the war of
05:21aggression. So the sides agreed on this, rejecting unilateral aggressions, rejecting war as a means of politics, but without naming
05:33the actor. Besides that, the declaration calls also for an
05:38an urgent reform of an urgent reform of the UN Security Council as Narendra Modi had mentioned in his speech
05:45and it also calls for a reform of other international institutions such as the IMF and the World Bank appointed
05:52was also made previous the previous days by a statement of the finance ministers of the BRICS Alliance.
06:00And it also rejects protectionism and it rejects the limitation or blockade sabotage of transport corridors and it calls for
06:13a deepening of economic and financial cooperation among BRICS countries, strengthening their financial ties and a greater emphasis on climate
06:25change and sustainability.
06:26Here, different issues also come into play like artificial intelligence, which was an important point of the Chinese president Xi
06:36Jinping.
06:36He said that South-South cooperation needed to expand more on that issue on artificial intelligence, cooperating, producing and jointly
06:47governing this new field of production or science or knowledge.
06:51So there are different side issues as well that are being mentioned where the BRICS final declaration calls to deepening.
07:02What we will have to see is what happens in the future with those proposals that the Indian prime minister
07:09has presented regarding the implementation mechanism.
07:12There have been also ideas from the South African delegation to establish a permanent secretariat in addition to the annual
07:23presidency that member countries do have as India this year.
07:27So these are still issues that will be discussed also tomorrow with partner countries.
07:34They come tomorrow into play, the partner countries and the countries that are attending the summit out of interest.
07:42There's a bunch of them that are interested in deepening the cooperation with BRICS countries.
07:47So tomorrow the summit will continue as of state will be here and will continue their bilateral meetings as well
07:57as their joint meetings with their BRICS Plus group.
08:01Thank you for the detailed information of everything that has taken place in this first day of the summit.
08:06We're going to continue to have more details, of course, in upcoming news before everything has to do with the
08:11BRICS Leaders Summit and tomorrow as well.
08:13Also stay tuned with the resolution.
